KJV ¹ The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.

DRB ² Annoncez parmi les nations, et faites-le entendre, et élevez l'étendard ; faites-le entendre, ne le cachez pas ; dites : Babylone est prise, Bel est honteux ; Merodac est brisé ; ses idoles sont honteuses, ses images sont brisées.

KJV ² Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.

VULC ² [Annuntiate in gentibus, et auditum facite :
levate signum, prædicate, et nolite celare :
dicite : Capta est Babylon,
confusus est Bel, victus est Merodach,
confusa sunt sculptilia ejus,
superata sunt idola eorum.

DRB ³ Car une nation est montée du nord contre elle ; elle a mis en désolation son pays, et il n'y aura plus là d'habitant : tant les hommes que les bêtes se sont enfuis, ils s'en sont allés.

KJV ³ For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.

VULC ³ Quoniam ascendit contra eam gens ab aquilone,
quæ ponet terram ejus in solitudinem,
et non erit qui habitet in ea ab homine usque ad pecus :
et moti sunt, et abierunt.

DRB ⁴ En ces jours-là et en ce temps-là, dit l'Éternel, les fils d'Israël viendront, eux et les fils de Juda ensemble ; ils iront, marchant et pleurant, et ils chercheront l'Éternel leur Dieu.

KJV ⁴ In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God.

VULC ⁴ In diebus illis, et in tempore illo, ait Dominus,
venient filii Israël ipsi et filii Juda simul :
ambulantes et flentes properabunt,
et Dominum Deum suum quærent :

DRB ⁵ Ils s'enquerront de Sion ; vers elle leur face [sera tournée] : Venez, attachons-nous à l'Éternel par une alliance éternelle qui ne sera pas oubliée.

KJV ⁵ They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.

VULC ⁵ in Sion interrogabunt viam, huc facies eorum :
venient, et apponentur ad Dominum fœdere sempiterno,
quod nulla oblivione delebitur.

DRB ⁶ Mon peuple est un troupeau perdu ; leurs pasteurs les ont fait errer, les égarant sur les montagnes ; ils sont allés de montagne en colline, ils ont oublié leur gîte.

KJV ⁶ My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.

VULC ⁶ Grex perditus factus est populus meus :
pastores eorum seduxerunt eos,
feceruntque vagari in montibus :
de monte in collem transierunt ;
obliti sunt cubilis sui.

DRB ⁷ Tous ceux qui les ont trouvés les ont dévorés ; et leurs ennemis disent : Nous ne sommes pas coupables, parce qu'ils ont péché contre l'Éternel, contre la demeure de la justice, contre l'Éternel, l'attente de leurs pères.

KJV ⁷ All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.

VULC ⁷ Omnes qui invenerunt comederunt eos,
et hostes eorum dixerunt : Non peccavimus :
pro eo quod peccaverunt Domino decori justitiæ,
et exspectationi patrum eorum Domino.

DRB ⁸ Fuyez du milieu de Babylone, et sortez du pays des Chaldéens, et soyez comme les boucs [qui vont] devant le troupeau.

KJV ⁸ Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.

VULC ⁸ Recedite de medio Babylonis,
et de terra Chaldæorum egredimini,
et estote quasi hædi ante gregem.

DRB ⁹ Car voici, du pays du nord je réveillerai et je ferai monter contre Babylone un rassemblement de grandes nations qui se rangeront contre elle : de là elle sera prise. Leurs flèches sont comme celles d'un habile homme fort ; pas une ne reviendra à vide.

KJV ⁹ For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.

VULC ⁹ Quoniam ecce ego suscito,
et adducam in Babylonem
congregationem gentium magnarum de terra aquilonis,
et præparabuntur adversus eam, et inde capietur :
sagitta ejus quasi viri fortis interfectoris :
non revertetur vacua.

KJV ¹⁰ And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD.

omnes vastantes eam replebuntur, ait Dominus.

DRB ¹¹ parce que vous vous êtes réjouis, parce que vous vous êtes égayés, vous qui avez pillé mon héritage, parce que vous avez bondi comme une génisse qui foule le blé*, et que vous avez henni comme de puissants chevaux.

KJV ¹¹ Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;

VULC ¹¹ Quoniam exsultatis, et magna loquimini,
diripientes hæreditatem meam :
quoniam effusi estis sicut vituli super herbam,
et mugistis sicut tauri :

DRB ¹² Votre mère est fort honteuse, celle qui vous enfanta est couverte d'opprobre : voici, [elle est] la dernière des nations, un désert, un pays stérile et une solitude !

KJV ¹² Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

VULC ¹² confusa est mater vestra nimis,
et adæquata pulveri, quæ genuit vos :
ecce novissima erit in gentibus,
deserta, invia, et arens.

DRB ¹³ cause du courroux de l'Éternel elle ne sera pas habitée, elle sera tout entière une désolation ; quiconque passera près de Babylone sera étonné et sifflera à cause de toutes ses plaies.

KJV ¹³ Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

VULC ¹³ Ab ira Domini non habitabitur,
sed redigetur tota in solitudinem :
omnis qui transibit per Babylonem stupebit,
et sibilabit super universis plagis ejus.

DRB ¹⁴ Rangez-vous en bataille contre Babylone, tout alentour, vous tous qui bandez l'arc ; tirez contre elle, n'épargnez pas les flèches, car elle a péché contre l'Éternel.

KJV ¹⁴ Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD.

VULC ¹⁴ Præparamini contra Babylonem per circuitum,
omnes qui tenditis arcum :
debellate eam, non parcatis jaculis,
quia Domino peccavit.

DRB ¹⁵ Poussez des cris contre elle tout alentour ! Elle s'est rendue*, ses remparts sont tombés, ses murailles sont renversées, car c'est ici la vengeance de l'Éternel. Vengez-vous sur elle, faites-lui comme elle a fait !

KJV ¹⁵ Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.

VULC ¹⁵ Clamate adversus eam,
ubique dedit manum :
ceciderunt fundamenta ejus,
destructi sunt muri ejus,
quoniam ultio Domini est :
ultionem accipite de ea :
sicut fecit, facite ei.

DRB ¹⁶ Retranchez de Babylone celui qui sème, et celui qui tient la faucille au temps de la moisson. À cause de l'épée qui ravage, qu'ils s'en retournent chacun vers son peuple, et qu'ils fuient chacun vers son pays.

KJV ¹⁶ Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

KJV ¹⁷ Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.

DRB ¹⁹ et je ferai revenir Israël à ses pâturages ; et il paîtra sur le Carmel et en Basan, et son âme sera rassasiée dans la montagne d'Éphraïm et en Galaad.

KJV ¹⁹ And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.

KJV ²¹ Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.

DRB ²² Le cri de guerre est dans le pays, et une grande ruine.

KJV ²² A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

DRB ²³ Comment est mis en pièces et brisé le marteau de toute la terre ! Comment Babylone est-elle réduite en désolation* parmi les nations !

KJV ²³ How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

VULC ²³ Quomodo confractus est et contritus malleus universæ terræ ?
quomodo versa est in desertum Babylon in gentibus ?

DRB ²⁴ Je t'ai tendu un piège, et aussi tu es prise, Babylone ! et tu ne le savais pas ; tu as été trouvée, et tu as aussi été saisie, parce que tu as combattu contre l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁴ I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD.

VULC ²⁴ Illaqueavi te, et capta es, Babylon,
et nesciebas :
inventa es et apprehensa,
quoniam Dominum provocasti.

DRB ²⁵ L'Éternel a ouvert son trésor, et il en a fait sortir les armes de son indignation ; car c'est ici l'œuvre du Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, dans le pays des Chaldéens.

KJV ²⁵ The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans.

DRB ²⁶ Venez contre elle de toute part ; ouvrez ses granges, entassez-la comme des gerbes et détruisez-la entièrement ; qu'elle n'ait rien de reste !

KJV ²⁶ Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.

KJV ²⁹ Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.

DRB ³² Et l'orgueilleuse* a bronché et est tombée, et il n'y a personne qui la relève ; et j'allumerai dans ses villes un feu qui dévorera tous ses alentours.

KJV ³² And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.

KJV ³³ Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.

KJV ³⁸ A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.

VULC ³⁸ Siccitas super aquas ejus erit, et arescent,
quia terra sculptilium est, et in portentis gloriantur.

DRB ³⁹ C'est pourquoi les bêtes du désert, avec des chacals, y habiteront, et il y habitera des autruches ; et elle ne sera plus jamais habitée, et on n'y demeurera plus, de génération en génération.

KJV ³⁹ Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.

DRB ⁴² Ils saisissent l'arc et le javelot ; ils sont cruels, et ils n'ont pas de compassion ; leur voix bruit comme la mer, et ils sont montés sur des chevaux, préparés comme un homme pour la guerre, contre toi, fille de Babylone.

KJV ⁴² They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

KJV ⁴³ The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.

VULC ⁴³ Audivit rex Babylonis famam eorum,
et dissolutæ sunt manus ejus :
angustia apprehendit eum,
dolor quasi parturientem.

DRB ⁴⁴ Voici, comme un lion il monte de la crue du Jourdain contre la demeure forte ; car je les en chasserai précipitamment*. Et qui est l'homme choisi, que je préposerai sur elle ? Car qui est comme moi, et qui m'assignera le temps, et qui sera le pasteur qui se tiendra devant moi ?

KJV ⁴⁴ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

de superbia Jordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam,

DRB ⁴⁵ C'est pourquoi, écoutez le conseil de l'Éternel, qu'il a formé contre Babylone, et les pensées qu'il a pensées contre le pays des Chaldéens : Si les petits du troupeau ne les entraînent ! S'il ne rend désolée pour eux [leur] habitation !…

KJV ⁴⁵ Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.

quod mente concepit adversum Babylonem,
et cogitationes ejus
quas cogitavit super terram Chaldæorum :
