KJV ¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

VULC ¹ Respondens autem Sophar Naamathites, dixit :

KJV ² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

VULC ² [Numquid qui multa loquitur, non et audiet ?
aut vir verbosus justificabitur ?

KJV ³ Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

VULC ³ Tibi soli tacebunt homines ?
et cum ceteros irriseris, a nullo confutaberis ?

KJV ⁴ For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

VULC ⁴ Dixisti enim : Purus est sermo meus,
et mundus sum in conspectu tuo.

KJV ⁵ But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

VULC ⁵ Atque utinam Deus loqueretur tecum,
et aperiret labia sua tibi,

KJV ⁶ And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

VULC ⁶ ut ostenderet tibi secreta sapientiæ,
et quod multiplex esset lex ejus :
et intelligeres quod multo minora exigaris ab eo
quam meretur iniquitas tua !

KJV ⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

VULC ⁷ Forsitan vestigia Dei comprehendes,
et usque ad perfectum Omnipotentem reperies ?

KJV ⁸ It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

VULC ⁸ Excelsior cælo est, et quid facies ?
profundior inferno, et unde cognosces ?

KJV ⁹ The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

VULC ⁹ Longior terra mensura ejus,
et latior mari.

KJV ¹⁰ If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

VULC ¹⁰ Si subverterit omnia, vel in unum coarctaverit,
quis contradicet ei ?

KJV ¹¹ For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

VULC ¹¹ Ipse enim novit hominum vanitatem ;
et videns iniquitatem, nonne considerat ?

KJV ¹² For vain men would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

VULC ¹² Vir vanus in superbiam erigitur,
et tamquam pullum onagri se liberum natum putat.

KJV ¹³ If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

VULC ¹³ Tu autem firmasti cor tuum,
et expandisti ad eum manus tuas.

KJV ¹⁴ If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

VULC ¹⁴ Si iniquitatem quæ est in manu tua abstuleris a te,
et non manserit in tabernaculo tuo injustitia,

KJV ¹⁵ For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

VULC ¹⁵ tunc levare poteris faciem tuam absque macula ;
et eris stabilis, et non timebis.

KJV ¹⁶ Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:

VULC ¹⁶ Miseriæ quoque oblivisceris,
et quasi aquarum quæ præterierunt recordaberis.

KJV ¹⁷ And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

VULC ¹⁷ Et quasi meridianus fulgor consurget tibi ad vesperam ;
et cum te consumptum putaveris, orieris ut lucifer.

KJV ¹⁸ And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

VULC ¹⁸ Et habebis fiduciam, proposita tibi spe :
et defossus securus dormies.

KJV ¹⁹ Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

VULC ¹⁹ Requiesces, et non erit qui te exterreat ;
et deprecabuntur faciem tuam plurimi.

KJV ²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

VULC ²⁰ Oculi autem impiorum deficient,
et effugium peribit ab eis :
et spes illorum abominatio animæ.]
