KJV ¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

WLC ¹ וַ֭יַּעַן אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

BCC ² Le sage répond-il par une science vaine ? Se gonfle-t-il la poitrine de vent ?

KJV ² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

WLC ² הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה דַֽעַת־ ר֑וּחַ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א קָדִ֣ים בִּטְנֽוֹ׃

BCC ³ Se défend-il par de futiles propos, par des discours qui ne servent à rien ?

KJV ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

WLC ³ הוֹכֵ֣חַ בְּ֭דָבָר לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃

BCC ⁴ Toi, tu détruis même la crainte de Dieu, tu anéantis toute piété envers Dieu.

KJV ⁴ Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

WLC ⁴ אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃

BCC ⁵ Ta bouche révèle ton iniquité, et tu prends le langage les fourbes.

KJV ⁵ For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

WLC ⁵ כִּ֤י יְאַלֵּ֣ף עֲוֺנְךָ֣ פִ֑יךָ וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר לְשׁ֣וֹן עֲרוּמִֽים׃

BCC ⁶ Ce n'est pas moi, c'est ta bouche qui te condamne, ce sont tes lèvres qui déposent contre toi.

KJV ⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

WLC ⁶ יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃

BCC ⁷ Es-tu né le premier des hommes ? As-tu été enfanté avant les collines ?

KJV ⁷ Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

WLC ⁷ הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃

BCC ⁸ As-tu assisté au conseil de Dieu ? As-tu dérobé pour toi seul la sagesse ?

KJV ⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

WLC ⁸ הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ תִּשְׁמָ֑ע וְתִגְרַ֖ע אֵלֶ֣יךָ חָכְמָֽה׃

BCC ⁹ Que sais-tu, que nous ne sachions ? Qu'as-tu appris, qui ne nous soit familier ?

KJV ⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

WLC ⁹ מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃

BCC ¹⁰ Nous avons aussi parmi nous des cheveux blancs, des vieillards plus riches de jours que ton père.

KJV ¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

WLC ¹⁰ גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר מֵאָבִ֣יךָ יָמִֽים׃

BCC ¹¹ Tiens-tu pour peu de chose les consolations de Dieu et les douces paroles que nous t'adressons ?

KJV ¹¹ Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

WLC ¹¹ הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃

BCC ¹² Où ton coeur t'emporte-t-il, et que signifie ce roulement de tes yeux ?

KJV ¹² Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

WLC ¹² מַה־ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּֽמַה־ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

BCC ¹³ Quoi ! C'est contre Dieu que tu tournes ta colère, et que de ta bouche tu fais sortir de tels discours ?

KJV ¹³ That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

WLC ¹³ כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־ אֵ֣ל רוּחֶ֑ךָ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ מִלִּֽין׃

BCC ¹⁴ Qu'est-ce que l'homme, pour qu'il soit pur, le fils de la femme, pour qu'il soit juste ?

KJV ¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

WLC ¹⁴ מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃

BCC ¹⁵ Voici que Dieu ne se fie pas même à ses saints, et les cieux ne sont pas purs devant lui :

KJV ¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

WLC ¹⁵ הֵ֣ן לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃

BCC ¹⁶ combien moins cet être abominable et pervers, l'homme qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau !

KJV ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

WLC ¹⁶ אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח אִישׁ־ שֹׁתֶ֖ה כַמַּ֣יִם עַוְלָֽה׃

BCC ¹⁷ Je vais t'instruire, écoute-moi ; je raconterai ce que j'ai vu,

KJV ¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

WLC ¹⁷ אֲחַוְךָ֥ שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃

BCC ¹⁸ ce que les sages enseignent, ‒ ils ne le cachent pas, l'ayant appris de leurs pères ;

KJV ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

WLC ¹⁸ אֲשֶׁר־ חֲכָמִ֥ים יַגִּ֑ידוּ וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃

BCC ¹⁹ à eux seuls avait été donné le pays, et parmi eux jamais ne passa l'étranger.‒

KJV ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

WLC ¹⁹ לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם נִתְּנָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־ עָ֖בַר זָ֣ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

BCC ²⁰ "Le méchant, durant tous ses jours, est rongé par l'angoisse ; un petit nombre d'années sont réservées à l'oppresseur.

KJV ²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

WLC ²⁰ כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י רָ֭שָׁע ה֣וּא מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים נִצְפְּנ֥וּ לֶעָרִֽיץ׃

BCC ²¹ Des bruits effrayants retentissent à ses oreilles ; au sein de la paix, le dévastateur fond sur lui.

KJV ²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

WLC ²¹ קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃

BCC ²² Il n'espère pas échapper aux ténèbres, il sent qu'il est guetté pour le glaive.

KJV ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

WLC ²² לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ ה֣וּא אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃

BCC ²³ Il erre pour chercher son pain ; il sait que le jour des ténèbres est prêt, à ses côtés.

KJV ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

WLC ²³ נֹ֘דֵ֤ד ה֣וּא לַלֶּ֣חֶם אַיֵּ֑ה יָדַ֓ע ׀ כִּֽי־ נָכ֖וֹן בְּיָד֣וֹ יֽוֹם־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

BCC ²⁴ La détresse et l'angoisse tombent sur lui ; Elles l'assaillent comme un roi armé pour le combat.

KJV ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

WLC ²⁴ יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ צַ֣ר וּמְצוּקָ֑ה תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ ׀ עָתִ֬יד לַכִּידֽוֹר׃

BCC ²⁵ Car il a levé sa main contre Dieu, il a bravé le Tout-Puissant,

KJV ²⁵ For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

WLC ²⁵ כִּֽי־ נָטָ֣ה אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יָד֑וֹ וְאֶל־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃

BCC ²⁶ il a couru sur lui le cou raide, sous le dos épais de ses boucliers.

KJV ²⁶ He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

WLC ²⁶ יָר֣וּץ אֵלָ֣יו בְּצַוָּ֑אר בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י גַּבֵּ֥י מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃

BCC ²⁷ Il avait le visage couvert de graisse, et les flancs chargés d'embonpoint.

KJV ²⁷ Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

WLC ²⁷ כִּֽי־ כִסָּ֣ה פָנָ֣יו בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ כָֽסֶל׃

BCC ²⁸ Il occupait des villes qui ne sont plus, des maisons qui n'ont plus d'habitants, vouées à devenir des monceaux de pierre.

KJV ²⁸ And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

WLC ²⁸ וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן ׀ עָ֘רִ֤ים נִכְחָד֗וֹת בָּ֭תִּים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃

BCC ²⁹ Il ne s'enrichira plus, sa fortune ne tiendra pas, ses possessions ne s'étendront plus sur la terre.

KJV ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

WLC ²⁹ לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ מִנְלָֽם׃

BCC ³⁰ Il n'échappera pas aux ténèbres ; la flamme desséchera ses rejetons, et il sera emporté par le souffle de la bouche de Dieu.

KJV ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

WLC ³⁰ לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר ׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת וְ֝יָס֗וּר בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃

BCC ³¹ Qu'il n'espère rien du mensonge, il y sera pris ; le mensonge sera sa récompense.

KJV ³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

WLC ³¹ אַל־ יַאֲמֵ֣ן נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃

BCC ³² Elle arrivera avant que ses jours soient pleins, et son rameau ne verdira plus.

KJV ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

WLC ³² בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ תִּמָּלֵ֑א וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃

BCC ³³ Il secouera, comme la vigne, son fruit à peine éclos il laissera tomber sa fleur, comme l'olivier.

KJV ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

WLC ³³ יַחְמֹ֣ס כַּגֶּ֣פֶן בִּסְר֑וֹ וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת נִצָּתֽוֹ׃

BCC ³⁴ Car la maison de l'impie est stérile, et le feu dévore la tente du juge corrompu.

KJV ³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

WLC ³⁴ כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃

BCC ³⁵ Il a conçu le mal, et il enfante le malheur, dans son sein mûrit un fruit de déception."

KJV ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

WLC ³⁵ הָרֹ֣ה עָ֭מָל וְיָ֣לֹד אָ֑וֶן וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם תָּכִ֥ין מִרְמָֽה׃
