KJV ¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

WLC ¹ וַ֭יַּעַן אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

MAR ² Un homme sage proférera-t-il dans ses réponses une science aussi légère que le vent, des opinions vaines ; et remplira-t-il son ventre du vent d'Orient ;

WLC ² הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה דַֽעַת־ ר֑וּחַ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א קָדִ֣ים בִּטְנֽוֹ׃

KJV ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

MAR ³ Disputant avec des discours qui ne servent de rien, et avec des paroles dont on ne peut tirer aucun profit ?

WLC ³ הוֹכֵ֣חַ בְּ֭דָבָר לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃

KJV ⁴ Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

MAR ⁴ Certainement tu abolis la crainte [de Dieu], et tu anéantis peu à peu la prière qu'on doit présenter au [Dieu] Fort.

WLC ⁴ אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃

KJV ⁵ For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

MAR ⁵ Car ta bouche fait connaître ton iniquité, et tu as choisi un langage trompeur.

WLC ⁵ כִּ֤י יְאַלֵּ֣ף עֲוֺנְךָ֣ פִ֑יךָ וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר לְשׁ֣וֹן עֲרוּמִֽים׃

KJV ⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

MAR ⁶ C'est ta bouche qui te condamne, et non pas moi ; et tes lèvres témoignent contre toi.

WLC ⁶ יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃

KJV ⁷ Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

MAR ⁷ Es-tu le premier homme né ? ou as-tu été formé avant les montagnes ?

WLC ⁷ הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃

KJV ⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

MAR ⁸ As-tu été instruit dans le conseil secret de Dieu, et renfermes-tu seul la sagesse ?

WLC ⁸ הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ תִּשְׁמָ֑ע וְתִגְרַ֖ע אֵלֶ֣יךָ חָכְמָֽה׃

KJV ⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

MAR ⁹ Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions ? quelle connaissance as-tu que nous n'ayons ?

WLC ⁹ מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃

KJV ¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

MAR ¹⁰ Il y a aussi parmi nous des hommes à cheveux blancs, et des gens d'une fort grande vieillesse, il y en a même de plus âgés que ton père.

WLC ¹⁰ גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר מֵאָבִ֣יךָ יָמִֽים׃

KJV ¹¹ Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

MAR ¹¹ Les consolations du [Dieu] Fort te semblent-elles trop petites ? et as-tu quelque chose de caché par-devers toi ?

WLC ¹¹ הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃

KJV ¹² Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

MAR ¹² Qu'est-ce qui t'ôte le coeur, et pourquoi clignes-tu les yeux ?

WLC ¹² מַה־ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּֽמַה־ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

KJV ¹³ That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

MAR ¹³ Que tu pousses ton souffle contre le [Dieu] Fort, et que tu fasses sortir de ta bouche de tels discours ?

WLC ¹³ כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־ אֵ֣ל רוּחֶ֑ךָ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ מִלִּֽין׃

KJV ¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

MAR ¹⁴ Qu'est-ce que de l'homme [mortel], qu'il soit pur, et de celui qui est né de femme, qu'il soit juste ?

WLC ¹⁴ מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃

KJV ¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

MAR ¹⁵ Voici, [le Dieu fort] ne s'assure point sur ses saints, et les cieux ne se trouvent point purs devant lui ;

WLC ¹⁵ הֵ֣ן לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

MAR ¹⁶ Et combien plus l'homme, qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau, est-il abominable et impur ?

WLC ¹⁶ אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח אִישׁ־ שֹׁתֶ֖ה כַמַּ֣יִם עַוְלָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

MAR ¹⁷ Je t'enseignerai, écoute-moi, et je te raconterai ce que j'ai vu ;

WLC ¹⁷ אֲחַוְךָ֥ שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃

KJV ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

MAR ¹⁸ Savoir ce que les sages ont déclaré, et qu'ils n'ont point caché ; ce qu'ils avaient [reçu] de leurs pères ;

WLC ¹⁸ אֲשֶׁר־ חֲכָמִ֥ים יַגִּ֑ידוּ וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃

KJV ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

MAR ¹⁹ Eux à qui seuls la terre a été donnée, et parmi lesquels l'étranger n'est point passé.

WLC ¹⁹ לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם נִתְּנָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־ עָ֖בַר זָ֣ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

KJV ²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

MAR ²⁰ Le méchant est [comme] en travail d'enfant tous les jours de sa vie, et un [petit] nombre d'années est réservé à l'homme violent.

WLC ²⁰ כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י רָ֭שָׁע ה֣וּא מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים נִצְפְּנ֥וּ לֶעָרִֽיץ׃

KJV ²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

MAR ²¹ Un cri de frayeur est dans ses oreilles ; au milieu de la paix [il croit] que le destructeur se jette sur lui.

WLC ²¹ קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃

KJV ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

MAR ²² Il ne croit point pouvoir sortir des ténèbres ; et il est toujours regardé de l'épée.

WLC ²² לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ ה֣וּא אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃

KJV ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

MAR ²³ Il court après le pain, en [disant]: où y en a-t-il ? il sait que le jour de ténèbres est tout prêt, et il le touche comme avec la main.

WLC ²³ נֹ֘דֵ֤ד ה֣וּא לַלֶּ֣חֶם אַיֵּ֑ה יָדַ֓ע ׀ כִּֽי־ נָכ֖וֹן בְּיָד֣וֹ יֽוֹם־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

KJV ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

MAR ²⁴ L'angoisse et l'adversité l'épouvantent, et chacune l'accable, comme un Roi équipé pour le combat.

WLC ²⁴ יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ צַ֣ר וּמְצוּקָ֑ה תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ ׀ עָתִ֬יד לַכִּידֽוֹר׃

KJV ²⁵ For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

MAR ²⁵ Parce qu'il a élevé sa main contre le [Dieu] Fort, et qu'il s'est roidi contre le Tout-puissant ;

WLC ²⁵ כִּֽי־ נָטָ֣ה אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יָד֑וֹ וְאֶל־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃

KJV ²⁶ He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

MAR ²⁶ Il lui sautera au collet, [et] sur l'épaisseur de ses gros boucliers.

WLC ²⁶ יָר֣וּץ אֵלָ֣יו בְּצַוָּ֑אר בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י גַּבֵּ֥י מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃

KJV ²⁷ Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

MAR ²⁷ Parce que la graisse aura couvert son visage, et qu'elle aura fait des replis sur son ventre.

WLC ²⁷ כִּֽי־ כִסָּ֣ה פָנָ֣יו בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ כָֽסֶל׃

KJV ²⁸ And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

MAR ²⁸ Et qu'il aura habité dans les villes détruites, et dans des maisons où il ne demeurait plus personne, et qui étaient réduites en monceaux de pierres.

WLC ²⁸ וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן ׀ עָ֘רִ֤ים נִכְחָד֗וֹת בָּ֭תִּים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃

KJV ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

MAR ²⁹ Mais il n'en sera pas plus riche, car ses biens ne subsisteront point, et leur entassement ne se répandra point sur la terre.

WLC ²⁹ לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ מִנְלָֽם׃

KJV ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

MAR ³⁰ Il ne pourra point se tirer des ténèbres ; la flamme séchera ses branches encore tendres ; il s'en ira par le souffle de la bouche du [Tout-puissant].

WLC ³⁰ לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר ׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת וְ֝יָס֗וּר בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃

KJV ³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

MAR ³¹ Qu'il ne s'assure [donc] point sur la vanité par laquelle il a été séduit, car son changement lui sera inutile.

WLC ³¹ אַל־ יַאֲמֵ֣ן נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃

KJV ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

MAR ³² Ce sera fait de lui avant son temps, ses branches ne reverdiront point.

WLC ³² בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ תִּמָּלֵ֑א וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃

KJV ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

MAR ³³ On lui ravira son aigret comme à une vigne ; et on [lui] fera tomber ses boutons comme à un olivier.

WLC ³³ יַחְמֹ֣ס כַּגֶּ֣פֶן בִּסְר֑וֹ וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת נִצָּתֽוֹ׃

KJV ³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

MAR ³⁴ Car la bande des hypocrites sera désolée ; le feu dévorera les tentes de [ceux qui reçoivent les] présents.

WLC ³⁴ כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃

KJV ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

MAR ³⁵ Ils conçoivent le travail, et ils enfantent le tourment, et machinent dans le coeur des fraudes.

WLC ³⁵ הָרֹ֣ה עָ֭מָל וְיָ֣לֹד אָ֑וֶן וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם תָּכִ֥ין מִרְמָֽה׃
