KJV ¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

WLC ² הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה דַֽעַת־ ר֑וּחַ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א קָדִ֣ים בִּטְנֽוֹ׃

KJV ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

OST ³ Discute-t-il avec des propos qui ne servent de rien, et avec des paroles sans profit?

WLC ³ הוֹכֵ֣חַ בְּ֭דָבָר לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃

KJV ⁴ Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

OST ⁴ Bien plus, tu abolis la piété, et tu détruis la prière qui s'adresse à Dieu.

WLC ⁴ אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃

KJV ⁵ For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

OST ⁵ Ton iniquité inspire ta bouche, et tu as choisi le langage des rusés.

WLC ⁵ כִּ֤י יְאַלֵּ֣ף עֲוֺנְךָ֣ פִ֑יךָ וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר לְשׁ֣וֹן עֲרוּמִֽים׃

KJV ⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

OST ⁶ Ta bouche te condamne, et non pas moi; et tes lèvres témoignent contre toi.

WLC ⁶ יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃

KJV ⁷ Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

OST ⁷ Es-tu le premier-né des hommes, et as-tu été formé avant les montagnes?

WLC ⁷ הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃

KJV ⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

OST ⁸ As-tu entendu ce qui s'est dit dans le conseil de Dieu, et as-tu pris pour toi la sagesse?

WLC ⁸ הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ תִּשְׁמָ֑ע וְתִגְרַ֖ע אֵלֶ֣יךָ חָכְמָֽה׃

KJV ⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

OST ⁹ Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions? Quelle connaissance as-tu que nous n'ayons aussi?

WLC ⁹ מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃

KJV ¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

OST ¹⁰ Il y a aussi parmi nous des cheveux blancs, des vieillards, plus riches de jours que ton père.

WLC ¹⁰ גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר מֵאָבִ֣יךָ יָמִֽים׃

KJV ¹¹ Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

OST ¹¹ Est-ce donc peu de chose pour toi que les consolations de Dieu et les paroles dites avec douceur?

WLC ¹¹ הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃

KJV ¹² Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

OST ¹² Pourquoi ton coeur s'emporte-t-il? Et pourquoi tes yeux regardent-ils de travers?

WLC ¹² מַה־ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּֽמַה־ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

KJV ¹³ That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

OST ¹³ C'est contre Dieu que tu tournes ta colère, et que tu fais sortir de ta bouche de tels discours!

WLC ¹³ כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־ אֵ֣ל רוּחֶ֑ךָ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ מִלִּֽין׃

KJV ¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

OST ¹⁴ Qu'est-ce qu'un mortel pour qu'il soit pur, et un fils de femme pour qu'il soit juste?

WLC ¹⁴ מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃

KJV ¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

OST ¹⁵ Voici, Dieu ne se fie pas à ses saints, et les cieux ne sont pas purs à ses yeux.

WLC ¹⁵ הֵ֣ן לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

OST ¹⁶ Combien plus est abominable et corrompu, l'homme qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau!

WLC ¹⁶ אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח אִישׁ־ שֹׁתֶ֖ה כַמַּ֣יִם עַוְלָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

OST ¹⁷ Je t'instruirai, écoute-moi. Je te raconterai ce que j'ai vu,

WLC ¹⁷ אֲחַוְךָ֥ שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃

KJV ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

OST ¹⁸ Ce que les sages ont proclamé, ce qu'ils n'ont point caché, l'ayant tenu de leurs pères.

WLC ¹⁸ אֲשֶׁר־ חֲכָמִ֥ים יַגִּ֑ידוּ וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃

KJV ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

WLC ¹⁹ לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם נִתְּנָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־ עָ֖בַר זָ֣ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

KJV ²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

OST ²⁰ Toute sa vie, le méchant est tourmenté, et un petit nombre d'années sont réservées au malfaiteur.

WLC ²⁰ כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י רָ֭שָׁע ה֣וּא מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים נִצְפְּנ֥וּ לֶעָרִֽיץ׃

KJV ²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

OST ²¹ Des bruits effrayants remplissent ses oreilles; en pleine paix, le destructeur vient sur lui.

WLC ²¹ קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃

KJV ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

OST ²² Il ne croit pas pouvoir sortir des ténèbres, et il se voit épié par l'épée;

WLC ²² לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ ה֣וּא אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃

KJV ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

OST ²³ Il court çà et là, cherchant son pain; il sait que le jour des ténèbres lui est préparé.

WLC ²³ נֹ֘דֵ֤ד ה֣וּא לַלֶּ֣חֶם אַיֵּ֑ה יָדַ֓ע ׀ כִּֽי־ נָכ֖וֹן בְּיָד֣וֹ יֽוֹם־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

KJV ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

OST ²⁴ La détresse et l'angoisse l'épouvantent; elles l'assaillent comme un roi prêt au combat;

WLC ²⁴ יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ צַ֣ר וּמְצוּקָ֑ה תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ ׀ עָתִ֬יד לַכִּידֽוֹר׃

KJV ²⁵ For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

OST ²⁵ Parce qu'il a levé la main contre Dieu, et a bravé le Tout-Puissant:

WLC ²⁵ כִּֽי־ נָטָ֣ה אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יָד֑וֹ וְאֶל־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃

KJV ²⁶ He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

OST ²⁶ Il a couru vers lui, avec audace, sous le dos épais de ses boucliers.

WLC ²⁶ יָר֣וּץ אֵלָ֣יו בְּצַוָּ֑אר בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י גַּבֵּ֥י מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃

KJV ²⁷ Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

OST ²⁷ L'embonpoint avait couvert son visage, et la graisse s'était accumulée sur ses flancs;

WLC ²⁷ כִּֽי־ כִסָּ֣ה פָנָ֣יו בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ כָֽסֶל׃

KJV ²⁸ And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

OST ²⁸ C'est pourquoi il habite des villes détruites, des maisons désertes, tout près de n'être plus que des monceaux de pierres.

WLC ²⁸ וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן ׀ עָ֘רִ֤ים נִכְחָד֗וֹת בָּ֭תִּים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃

KJV ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

OST ²⁹ Il ne s'enrichira pas, et sa fortune ne subsistera pas, et ses propriétés ne s'étendront pas sur la terre.

WLC ²⁹ לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ מִנְלָֽם׃

KJV ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

OST ³⁰ Il ne pourra pas sortir des ténèbres; la flamme desséchera ses rejetons, et il s'en ira par le souffle de la bouche de Dieu.

WLC ³⁰ לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר ׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת וְ֝יָס֗וּר בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃

KJV ³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

OST ³¹ Qu'il ne compte pas sur la vanité qui le séduit; car la vanité sera sa récompense.

WLC ³¹ אַל־ יַאֲמֵ֣ן נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃

KJV ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

OST ³² Avant le temps, il prendra fin, et ses branches ne reverdiront point.

WLC ³² בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ תִּמָּלֵ֑א וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃

KJV ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

OST ³³ On arrachera ses fruits non mûrs, comme à une vigne; on jettera sa fleur, comme celle d'un olivier.

WLC ³³ יַחְמֹ֣ס כַּגֶּ֣פֶן בִּסְר֑וֹ וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת נִצָּתֽוֹ׃

KJV ³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

OST ³⁴ Car la famille de l'hypocrite est stérile, et le feu dévore les tentes de l'homme corrompu.

WLC ³⁴ כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃

KJV ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

OST ³⁵ Il conçoit le tourment, et il enfante la peine; et son ventre prépare une déception.

WLC ³⁵ הָרֹ֣ה עָ֭מָל וְיָ֣לֹד אָ֑וֶן וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם תָּכִ֥ין מִרְמָֽה׃
