WLC 1 וַ֭יַּעַן אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃
KJV 2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
VULC 2 [Numquid sapiens respondebit quasi in ventum loquens,
et implebit ardore stomachum suum ?
WLC 2 הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה דַֽעַת־ ר֑וּחַ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א קָדִ֣ים בִּטְנֽוֹ׃
KJV 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
VULC 3 Arguis verbis eum qui non est æqualis tibi,
et loqueris quod tibi non expedit.
WLC 3 הוֹכֵ֣חַ בְּ֭דָבָר לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃
KJV 4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
VULC 4 Quantum in te est, evacuasti timorem,
et tulisti preces coram Deo.
WLC 4 אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃
KJV 5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
VULC 5 Docuit enim iniquitas tua os tuum,
et imitaris linguam blasphemantium.

KJV 6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
VULC 6 Condemnabit te os tuum, et non ego :
et labia tua respondebunt tibi.
WLC 6 יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃
KJV 7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
VULC 7 Numquid primus homo tu natus es,
et ante colles formatus ?
WLC 7 הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃
KJV 8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
VULC 8 numquid consilium Dei audisti,
et inferior te erit ejus sapientia ?
WLC 8 הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ תִּשְׁמָ֑ע וְתִגְרַ֖ע אֵלֶ֣יךָ חָכְמָֽה׃
KJV 9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
VULC 9 Quid nosti quod ignoremus ?
quid intelligis quod nesciamus ?
WLC 9 מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃
KJV 10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
VULC 10 Et senes et antiqui sunt in nobis,
multo vetustiores quam patres tui.
WLC 10 גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר מֵאָבִ֣יךָ יָמִֽים׃
KJV 11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
VULC 11 Numquid grande est ut consoletur te Deus ?
sed verba tua prava hoc prohibent.
WLC 11 הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃
KJV 12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
VULC 12 Quid te elevat cor tuum,
et quasi magna cogitans attonitos habes oculos ?
WLC 12 מַה־ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּֽמַה־ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃
KJV 13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
VULC 13 Quid tumet contra Deum spiritus tuus,
ut proferas de ore tuo hujuscemodi sermones ?
WLC 13 כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־ אֵ֣ל רוּחֶ֑ךָ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ מִלִּֽין׃
KJV 14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
VULC 14 Quid est homo ut immaculatus sit,
et ut justus appareat natus de muliere ?
WLC 14 מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃
KJV 15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
VULC 15 Ecce inter sanctos ejus nemo immutabilis,
et cæli non sunt mundi in conspectu ejus.
WLC 15 הֵ֣ן לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃
KJV 16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
VULC 16 Quanto magis abominabilis et inutilis homo,
qui bibit quasi aquam iniquitatem ?
WLC 16 אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח אִישׁ־ שֹׁתֶ֖ה כַמַּ֣יִם עַוְלָֽה׃
KJV 17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
VULC 17 Ostendam tibi : audi me :
quod vidi, narrabo tibi.
WLC 17 אֲחַוְךָ֥ שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃
KJV 18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
VULC 18 Sapientes confitentur,
et non abscondunt patres suos :
WLC 18 אֲשֶׁר־ חֲכָמִ֥ים יַגִּ֑ידוּ וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃
KJV 19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
VULC 19 quibus solis data est terra,
et non transivit alienus per eos.

KJV 20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
VULC 20 Cunctis diebus suis impius superbit,
et numerus annorum incertus est tyrannidis ejus.
WLC 20 כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י רָ֭שָׁע ה֣וּא מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים נִצְפְּנ֥וּ לֶעָרִֽיץ׃
KJV 21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
VULC 21 Sonitus terroris semper in auribus illius :
et cum pax sit, ille semper insidias suspicatur.
WLC 21 קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃
KJV 22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
VULC 22 Non credit quod reverti possit de tenebris ad lucem,
circumspectans undique gladium.
WLC 22 לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ ה֣וּא אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃
KJV 23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
VULC 23 Cum se moverit ad quærendum panem,
novit quod paratus sit in manu ejus tenebrarum dies.

KJV 24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
VULC 24 Terrebit eum tribulatio,
et angustia vallabit eum,
sicut regem qui præparatur ad prælium.

KJV 25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

KJV 26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
VULC 26 Cucurrit adversus eum erecto collo,
et pingui cervice armatus est.

KJV 27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
VULC 27 Operuit faciem ejus crassitudo,
et de lateribus ejus arvina dependet.
WLC 27 כִּֽי־ כִסָּ֣ה פָנָ֣יו בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ כָֽסֶל׃
KJV 28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
VULC 28 Habitavit in civitatibus desolatis,
et in domibus desertis, quæ in tumulos sunt redactæ.
WLC 28 וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן ׀ עָ֘רִ֤ים נִכְחָד֗וֹת בָּ֭תִּים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃
KJV 29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
VULC 29 Non ditabitur, nec perseverabit substantia ejus,
nec mittet in terra radicem suam.
WLC 29 לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ מִנְלָֽם׃
KJV 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
VULC 30 Non recedet de tenebris :
ramos ejus arefaciet flamma,
et auferetur spiritu oris sui.
WLC 30 לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר ׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת וְ֝יָס֗וּר בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃
KJV 31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
VULC 31 Non credet, frustra errore deceptus,
quod aliquo pretio redimendus sit.
WLC 31 אַל־ יַאֲמֵ֣ן נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃
KJV 32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
VULC 32 Antequam dies ejus impleantur peribit,
et manus ejus arescent.
WLC 32 בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ תִּמָּלֵ֑א וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃
KJV 33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
VULC 33 Lædetur quasi vinea in primo flore botrus ejus,
et quasi oliva projiciens florem suum.
WLC 33 יַחְמֹ֣ס כַּגֶּ֣פֶן בִּסְר֑וֹ וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת נִצָּתֽוֹ׃
KJV 34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
VULC 34 Congregatio enim hypocritæ sterilis,
et ignis devorabit tabernacula eorum qui munera libenter accipiunt.
WLC 34 כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃
KJV 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
