WLC ¹ וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

BAN ² Ecoutez, écoutez mon discours,
Et donnez-moi cette consolation !

KJV ² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

VULC ² [Audite, quæso, sermones meos,
et agite pœnitentiam.

WLC ² שִׁמְע֣וּ שָׁ֭מוֹעַ מִלָּתִ֑י וּתְהִי־ זֹ֝֗את תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃

BAN ³ Supportez-moi ; que je parle à mon tour ;
Quand j'aurai parlé, tu pourras te moquer.

KJV ³ Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

VULC ³ Sustinete me, et ego loquar :
et post mea, si videbitur, verba, ridete.

WLC ³ שָׂ֭אוּנִי וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְאַחַ֖ר דַּבְּרִ֣י תַלְעִֽיג׃

BAN ⁴ Est-ce des hommes que je me plains ?
Pourquoi donc la patience ne m'échapperait-elle pas ?

KJV ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

VULC ⁴ Numquid contra hominem disputatio mea est,
ut merito non debeam contristari ?

WLC ⁴ הֶ֭אָנֹכִי לְאָדָ֣ם שִׂיחִ֑י וְאִם־ מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ לֹא־ תִקְצַ֥ר רוּחִֽי׃

BAN ⁵ Tournez-vous vers moi et soyez stupéfaits ;
Mettez la main sur la bouche.

KJV ⁵ Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

VULC ⁵ Attendite me et obstupescite,
et superponite digitum ori vestro.

WLC ⁵ פְּנוּ־ אֵלַ֥י וְהָשַׁ֑מּוּ וְשִׂ֖ימוּ יָ֣ד עַל־ פֶּֽה׃

BAN ⁶ Quand j'y pense, je suis épouvanté ;
Et un tremblement saisit ma chair.

KJV ⁶ Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

VULC ⁶ Et ego, quando recordatus fuero, pertimesco,
et concutit carnem meam tremor.

WLC ⁶ וְאִם־ זָכַ֥רְתִּי וְנִבְהָ֑לְתִּי וְאָחַ֥ז בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י פַּלָּצֽוּת׃

BAN ⁷ Comment se fait-il que les méchants vivent,
Arrivent à un âge avancé et croissent même en puissance ?

KJV ⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

VULC ⁷ Quare ergo impii vivunt,
sublevati sunt, confortatique divitiis ?

WLC ⁷ מַדּ֣וּעַ רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִחְי֑וּ עָ֝תְק֗וּ גַּם־ גָּ֥בְרוּ חָֽיִל׃

BAN ⁸ Leur postérité est établie devant eux, auprès d'eux,
Et leurs descendants sous leurs yeux.

KJV ⁸ Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

VULC ⁸ Semen eorum permanet coram eis :
propinquorum turba et nepotum in conspectu eorum.

WLC ⁸ זַרְעָ֤ם נָכ֣וֹן לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם עִמָּ֑ם וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

BAN ⁹ Leurs maisons sont en paix, à l'abri de la crainte,
La verge de Dieu n'est pas sur eux ;

KJV ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

VULC ⁹ Domus eorum securæ sunt et pacatæ,
et non est virga Dei super illos.

WLC ⁹ בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם שָׁל֣וֹם מִפָּ֑חַד וְלֹ֤א שֵׁ֖בֶט אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

BAN ¹⁰ Leurs taureaux sont toujours féconds,
Leurs vaches mettent bas et n'avortent pas.

KJV ¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

VULC ¹⁰ Bos eorum concepit, et non abortivit :
vacca peperit, et non est privata fœtu suo.

WLC ¹⁰ שׁוֹר֣וֹ עִ֭בַּר וְלֹ֣א יַגְעִ֑ל תְּפַלֵּ֥ט פָּ֝רָת֗וֹ וְלֹ֣א תְשַׁכֵּֽל׃

BAN ¹¹ Comme un troupeau, leurs enfants sortent de chez eux
Et prennent leurs ébats.

KJV ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

VULC ¹¹ Egrediuntur quasi greges parvuli eorum,
et infantes eorum exsultant lusibus.

WLC ¹¹ יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ כַ֭צֹּאן עֲוִילֵיהֶ֑ם וְ֝יַלְדֵיהֶ֗ם יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃

BAN ¹² Ils chantent au son de la cymbale et de la harpe,
Ils se réjouissent au son de la flûte.

KJV ¹² They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

VULC ¹² Tenent tympanum et citharam,
et gaudent ad sonitum organi.

WLC ¹² יִ֭שְׂאוּ כְּתֹ֣ף וְכִנּ֑וֹר וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ לְק֣וֹל עוּגָֽב׃

BAN ¹³ Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur ;
Ils descendent en un clin d'oeil au séjour des morts.

KJV ¹³ They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

VULC ¹³ Ducunt in bonis dies suos,
et in puncto ad inferna descendunt.

WLC ¹³ בַטּ֣וֹב יְמֵיהֶ֑ם וּ֝בְרֶ֗גַע שְׁא֣וֹל יֵחָֽתּוּ׃

BAN ¹⁴ Et cependant ils disaient à Dieu : Retire-toi de nous ;
Nous ne nous soucions pas de connaître tes voies.

KJV ¹⁴ Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

VULC ¹⁴ Qui dixerunt Deo : Recede a nobis,
et scientiam viarum tuarum nolumus.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לָ֭אֵל ס֣וּר מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וְדַ֥עַת דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א חָפָֽצְנוּ׃

BAN ¹⁵ Qu'est-ce que le Puissant, que nous le servions ?
Que gagnerions-nous à nous approcher de lui ?

KJV ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

VULC ¹⁵ Quis est Omnipotens, ut serviamus ei ?
et quid nobis prodest si oraverimus illum ?

WLC ¹⁵ מַה־ שַׁדַּ֥י כִּֽי־ נַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ וּמַה־ נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל כִּ֣י נִפְגַּע־ בּֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁶ Pourtant ce n'est pas eux qui faisaient leur bonheur...
Loin de moi le conseil des méchants !

KJV ¹⁶ Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

VULC ¹⁶ Verumtamen quia non sunt in manu eorum bona sua,
consilium impiorum longe sit a me.

WLC ¹⁶ הֵ֤ן לֹ֣א בְיָדָ֣ם טוּבָ֑ם עֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽנִּי׃

BAN ¹⁷ Arrive-t-il souvent que la lampe des méchants s'éteigne,
Que le malheur fonde sur eux,
Que Dieu leur donne leur lot dans sa colère,

KJV ¹⁷ How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

VULC ¹⁷ Quoties lucerna impiorum extinguetur,
et superveniet eis inundatio,
et dolores dividet furoris sui ?

WLC ¹⁷ כַּמָּ֤ה ׀ נֵר־ רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים יִדְעָ֗ךְ וְיָבֹ֣א עָלֵ֣ימוֹ אֵידָ֑ם חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים יְחַלֵּ֥ק בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁸ Qu'ils soient comme la paille que chasse le vent,
Comme la balle qu'emporte la tempête ?

KJV ¹⁸ They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

VULC ¹⁸ Erunt sicut paleæ ante faciem venti,
et sicut favilla quam turbo dispergit.

WLC ¹⁸ יִהְי֗וּ כְּתֶ֥בֶן לִפְנֵי־ ר֑וּחַ וּ֝כְמֹ֗ץ גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ סוּפָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁹ Dieu réserve le malheur pour ses fils !...
C'est lui-même qu'il devrait punir, pour qu'il le sentit,

KJV ¹⁹ God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

VULC ¹⁹ Deus servabit filiis illius dolorem patris,
et cum reddiderit, tunc sciet.

WLC ¹⁹ אֱל֗וֹהַּ יִצְפֹּן־ לְבָנָ֥יו אוֹנ֑וֹ יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם אֵלָ֣יו וְיֵדָֽע׃

BAN ²⁰ Que ses propres yeux vissent sa ruine,
Et qu'il fût abreuvé de la colère du Puissant !

KJV ²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

VULC ²⁰ Videbunt oculi ejus interfectionem suam,
et de furore Omnipotentis bibet.

WLC ²⁰ יִרְא֣וּ כִּיד֑וֹ וּמֵחֲמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃

BAN ²¹ Car que lui importe le sort de sa maison après lui,
Quand le nombre de ses mois est accompli ?

KJV ²¹ For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

VULC ²¹ Quid enim ad eum pertinet de domo sua post se,
et si numerus mensium ejus dimidietur ?

WLC ²¹ כִּ֤י מַה־ חֶפְצ֣וֹ בְּבֵית֣וֹ אַחֲרָ֑יו וּמִסְפַּ֖ר חֳדָשָׁ֣יו חֻצָּֽצוּ׃

BAN ²² Enseignera-t-on la science à Dieu,
Lui qui juge les esprits célestes ?

KJV ²² Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

VULC ²² Numquid Deus docebit quispiam scientiam,
qui excelsos judicat ?

WLC ²² הַלְאֵ֥ל יְלַמֶּד־ דָּ֑עַת וְ֝ה֗וּא רָמִ֥ים יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃

BAN ²³ Tel meurt en pleine prospérité,
Parfaitement calme et tranquille.

KJV ²³ One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

VULC ²³ Iste moritur robustus et sanus,
dives et felix :

WLC ²³ זֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּעֶ֣צֶם תֻּמּ֑וֹ כֻּ֝לּ֗וֹ שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן וְשָׁלֵֽיו׃

BAN ²⁴ Ses seaux sont pleins de lait,
La moelle de ses os est remplie de sève.

KJV ²⁴ His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

VULC ²⁴ viscera ejus plena sunt adipe,
et medullis ossa illius irrigantur :

WLC ²⁴ עֲ֭טִינָיו מָלְא֣וּ חָלָ֑ב וּמֹ֖חַ עַצְמוֹתָ֣יו יְשֻׁקֶּֽה׃

BAN ²⁵ Tel autre meurt l'âme affligée,
Sans avoir goûté le bonheur.

KJV ²⁵ And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

VULC ²⁵ alius vero moritur in amaritudine animæ
absque ullis opibus :

WLC ²⁵ וְזֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ מָרָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־ אָ֝כַ֗ל בַּטּוֹבָֽה׃

BAN ²⁶ L'un comme l'autre s'étend sur la poussière,
Les vers les recouvrent.

KJV ²⁶ They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

VULC ²⁶ et tamen simul in pulvere dormient,
et vermes operient eos.

WLC ²⁶ יַ֭חַד עַל־ עָפָ֣ר יִשְׁכָּ֑בוּ וְ֝רִמָּ֗ה תְּכַסֶּ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

BAN ²⁷ Voyez ! Je connais vos pensées,
Les jugements que vous portez méchamment sur moi ;

KJV ²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

VULC ²⁷ Certe novi cogitationes vestras,
et sententias contra me iniquas.

WLC ²⁷ הֵ֣ן יָ֭דַעְתִּי מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וּ֝מְזִמּ֗וֹת עָלַ֥י תַּחְמֹֽסוּ׃

BAN ²⁸ Car vous dites : Où est la maison de l'homme violent ?
Où est la tente qu'habitent les méchants ?

KJV ²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

VULC ²⁸ Dicitis enim : Ubi est domus principis ?
et ubi tabernacula impiorum ?

WLC ²⁸ כִּ֤י תֹֽאמְר֗וּ אַיֵּ֥ה בֵית־ נָדִ֑יב וְ֝אַיֵּ֗ה אֹ֤הֶל ׀ מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת רְשָׁעִֽים׃

BAN ²⁹ N'avez-vous pas consulté les voyageurs ?
N'en croirez-vous pas leurs récits,

KJV ²⁹ Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,

VULC ²⁹ Interrogate quemlibet de viatoribus,
et hæc eadem illum intelligere cognoscetis :

WLC ²⁹ הֲלֹ֣א שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם ע֣וֹבְרֵי דָ֑רֶךְ וְ֝אֹתֹתָ֗ם לֹ֣א תְנַכֵּֽרוּ׃

BAN ³⁰ Qu'au jour du malheur, le méchant est épargné,
Et qu'au jour de la colère, il échappe ?

KJV ³⁰ That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

VULC ³⁰ quia in diem perditionis servatur malus,
et ad diem furoris ducetur.

WLC ³⁰ כִּ֤י לְי֣וֹם אֵ֭יד יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ רָ֑ע לְי֖וֹם עֲבָר֣וֹת יוּבָֽלוּ׃

BAN ³¹ Qui est ce qui lui reproche en face sa conduite ?
Qui est-ce qui lui rend selon ce qu'il a fait ?

KJV ³¹ Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

VULC ³¹ Quis arguet coram eo viam ejus ?
et quæ fecit, quis reddet illi ?

WLC ³¹ מִֽי־ יַגִּ֣יד עַל־ פָּנָ֣יו דַּרְכּ֑וֹ וְהֽוּא־ עָ֝שָׂ֗ה מִ֣י יְשַׁלֶּם־ לֽוֹ׃

BAN ³² On l'accompagne au sépulcre,
Il veille encore sur sa tombe.

KJV ³² Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

VULC ³² Ipse ad sepulchra ducetur,
et in congerie mortuorum vigilabit.

WLC ³² וְ֭הוּא לִקְבָר֣וֹת יוּבָ֑ל וְֽעַל־ גָּדִ֥ישׁ יִשְׁקֽוֹד׃

BAN ³³ Les mottes de la vallée lui sont légères ;
Tous les hommes suivent ses traces,
Et il a eu de nombreux devanciers.

KJV ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

VULC ³³ Dulcis fuit glareis Cocyti,
et post se omnem hominem trahet,
et ante se innumerabiles.

WLC ³³ מָֽתְקוּ־ ל֗וֹ רִגְבֵ֫י נָ֥חַל וְ֭אַחֲרָיו כָּל־ אָדָ֣ם יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר׃

BAN ³⁴ Comment donc m'offrez-vous d'aussi vaines consolations ?
Il ne reste de vos réponses que fausseté.

KJV ³⁴ How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

VULC ³⁴ Quomodo igitur consolamini me frustra,
cum responsio vestra repugnare ostensa sit veritati ?]

WLC ³⁴ וְ֭אֵיךְ תְּנַחֲמ֣וּנִי הָ֑בֶל וּ֝תְשֽׁוּבֹתֵיכֶ֗ם נִשְׁאַר־ מָֽעַל׃
