KJV ² Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

S21 ² «Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu?
Non, le sage n'est utile qu'à lui-même.

VULC ² [Numquid Deo potest comparari homo,
etiam cum perfectæ fuerit scientiæ ?

KJV ³ Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

S21 ³ Cela fait-il particulièrement plaisir au Tout-Puissant que tu sois juste?
Si tu es intègre dans ta conduite, qu'y gagne-t-il?

VULC ³ Quid prodest Deo, si justus fueris ?
aut quid ei confers, si immaculata fuerit via tua ?

KJV ⁴ Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

S21 ⁴ Est-ce à cause de ta piété qu'il te corrige,
qu'il entre en jugement avec toi?

VULC ⁴ Numquid timens arguet te,
et veniet tecum in judicium,

KJV ⁵ Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

S21 ⁵ N'as-tu pas fait beaucoup de mal?
Tes fautes ne sont-elles pas sans limite?

VULC ⁵ et non propter malitiam tuam plurimam,
et infinitas iniquitates tuas ?

KJV ⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

S21 ⁶ »En effet, sans raison tu réclamais des gages à tes frères,
tu privais de leurs habits ceux qui étaient presque nus.

VULC ⁶ Abstulisti enim pignus fratrum tuorum sine causa,
et nudos spoliasti vestibus.

KJV ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

S21 ⁷ Tu ne donnais pas d'eau à l'homme épuisé,
tu refusais du pain à l'homme affamé.

VULC ⁷ Aquam lasso non dedisti,
et esurienti subtraxisti panem.

KJV ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

et c'était le favoritisme qui permettait de s'y installer.

VULC ⁸ In fortitudine brachii tui possidebas terram,
et potentissimus obtinebas eam.

KJV ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

KJV ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

et la terreur s'est tout à coup emparée de toi.

VULC ¹⁰ Propterea circumdatus es laqueis,
et conturbat te formido subita.

KJV ¹¹ Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

S21 ¹¹ »Ne vois-tu donc pas ces ténèbres,
ce débordement d'eau qui te recouvre?

VULC ¹¹ Et putabas te tenebras non visurum,
et impetu aquarum inundantium non oppressum iri ?

KJV ¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

S21 ¹² Dieu n'est-il pas aussi élevé que le ciel?

VULC ¹² an non cogitas quod Deus excelsior cælo sit,

KJV ¹³ And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

et quasi per caliginem judicat.

KJV ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

KJV ¹⁵ Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

celle qu'ont suivie les hommes adonnés au mal?

VULC ¹⁵ Numquid semitam sæculorum custodire cupis,
quam calcaverunt viri iniqui,

KJV ¹⁶ Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

S21 ¹⁶ Ils ont été emportés plus tôt que la normale,
un fleuve a balayé leurs fondations.

VULC ¹⁶ qui sublati sunt ante tempus suum,
et fluvius subvertit fundamentum eorum ?

KJV ¹⁷ Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

et quasi nihil posset facere Omnipotens, æstimabant eum,

KJV ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Combien les projets des méchants sont loin de moi!

KJV ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

KJV ²⁰ Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

S21 ²⁰ ‘Voilà nos adversaires qui disparaissent!
Voilà leurs richesses dévorées par le feu!'

VULC ²⁰ nonne succisa est erectio eorum ?
et reliquias eorum devoravit ignis ?

KJV ²¹ Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

S21 ²¹ »Réconcilie-toi avec Dieu, sois en paix avec lui!
C'est ainsi que tu connaîtras le bonheur.

VULC ²¹ Acquiesce igitur ei, et habeto pacem,
et per hæc habebis fructus optimos.

KJV ²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

et mets ses paroles dans ton cœur.

VULC ²² Suscipe ex ore illius legem,
et pone sermones ejus in corde tuo.

KJV ²³ If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

VULC ²³ Si reversus fueris ad Omnipotentem, ædificaberis,
et longe facies iniquitatem a tabernaculo tuo.

KJV ²⁴ Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

l'or d'Ophir parmi les cailloux des torrents,

VULC ²⁴ Dabit pro terra silicem,
et pro silice torrentes aureos.

KJV ²⁵ Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

S21 ²⁵ et le Tout-Puissant sera ton or,
ta réserve d'argent.

VULC ²⁵ Eritque Omnipotens contra hostes tuos,
et argentum coacervabitur tibi.

KJV ²⁶ For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

S21 ²⁶ Alors tu feras du Tout-Puissant tes délices,
tu lèveras ton visage vers Dieu.

VULC ²⁶ Tunc super Omnipotentem deliciis afflues,
et elevabis ad Deum faciem tuam.

KJV ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

S21 ²⁷ Tu le prieras et il t'exaucera,
et tu accompliras tes vœux.

VULC ²⁷ Rogabis eum, et exaudiet te,
et vota tua reddes.

KJV ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

S21 ²⁸ Tu prendras une décision et tu la verras se concrétiser.
La lumière brillera sur tes chemins.

VULC ²⁸ Decernes rem, et veniet tibi,
et in viis tuis splendebit lumen.

KJV ²⁹ When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

S21 ²⁹ Quand viendra l'abaissement, tu diras: ‘Debout!'
Dieu sauvera celui qui est humble.

VULC ²⁹ Qui enim humiliatus fuerit, erit in gloria,
et qui inclinaverit oculos, ipse salvabitur.

KJV ³⁰ He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.

S21 ³⁰ Il délivrera même le coupable,
qui devra sa délivrance à la pureté de tes mains.»
