BAN ¹ Job prit la parole et dit :

KJV ¹ Then Job answered and said,

VULC ¹ Respondens autem Job, ait :

BAN ² Aujourd'hui encore mon discours [vous paraîtra] une révolte ;
[Et cependant] ma main cherche à étouffer mes soupirs.

KJV ² Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

VULC ² [Nunc quoque in amaritudine est sermo meus,
et manus plagæ meæ aggravata est super gemitum meum.

BAN ³ Oh ! si je savais où le trouver !
J'irais jusqu'à son tribunal,

KJV ³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!

VULC ³ Quis mihi tribuat ut cognoscam et inveniam illum,
et veniam usque ad solium ejus ?

BAN ⁴ J'exposerais ma cause devant lui,
Je remplirais ma bouche d'arguments.

KJV ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

VULC ⁴ Ponam coram eo judicium,
et os meum replebo increpationibus :

BAN ⁵ Je saurais les raisons qu'il peut m'opposer,
Je verrais ce qu'il a à me dire.

KJV ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

VULC ⁵ ut sciam verba quæ mihi respondeat,
et intelligam quid loquatur mihi.

BAN ⁶ Plaiderait-il contre moi dans la plénitude de sa force ?
Non ! seulement il ferait attention à moi !

KJV ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.

VULC ⁶ Nolo multa fortitudine contendat mecum,
nec magnitudinis suæ mole me premat.

BAN ⁷ Alors ce serait un juste qui plaiderait contre lui,
Je serais délivré à toujours de mon juge.

KJV ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

VULC ⁷ Proponat æquitatem contra me,
et perveniat ad victoriam judicium meum.

BAN ⁸ Mais maintenant, que j'aille devant moi, il n'y est pas ;
Derrière, je ne l'aperçois pas.

KJV ⁸ Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

VULC ⁸ Si ad orientem iero, non apparet ;
si ad occidentem, non intelligam eum.

BAN ⁹ Il exerce son pouvoir à ma gauche, et je ne puis le trouver ;
Il se tourne vers la droite, et je ne le vois pas.

KJV ⁹ On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

VULC ⁹ Si ad sinistram, quid agam ? non apprehendam eum ;
si me vertam ad dexteram, non videbo illum.

BAN ¹⁰ Car il connaît le chemin que je suis ;
S'il voulait me mettre à l'épreuve, j'en sortirais pur comme de l'or.

KJV ¹⁰ But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

VULC ¹⁰ Ipse vero scit viam meam,
et probavit me quasi aurum quod per ignem transit.

BAN ¹¹ Mon pied s'en est tenu à ses pas,
J'ai observé sa voie sans m'en écarter.

KJV ¹¹ My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

VULC ¹¹ Vestigia ejus secutus est pes meus :
viam ejus custodivi, et non declinavi ex ea.

BAN ¹² Le commandement de ses lèvres, je ne m'en éloignais pas ;
Plus que ma propre volonté, j'ai gardé avec soin les paroles de sa bouche.

KJV ¹² Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

VULC ¹² A mandatis labiorum ejus non recessi,
et in sinu meo abscondi verba oris ejus.

BAN ¹³ Mais il a pris une résolution ; qui l'en fera revenir ?
Ce que son âme a souhaité, il le fait.

KJV ¹³ But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

VULC ¹³ Ipse enim solus est, et nemo avertere potest cogitationem ejus :
et anima ejus quodcumque voluit, hoc fecit.

BAN ¹⁴ Car il accomplira ce qu'il a décidé contre moi,
Et il a bien des projets semblables.

KJV ¹⁴ For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.

VULC ¹⁴ Cum expleverit in me voluntatem suam,
et alia multa similia præsto sunt ei.

BAN ¹⁵ C'est pourquoi je suis épouvanté en sa présence ;
Quand j'y pense, je tremble devant lui.

KJV ¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

VULC ¹⁵ Et idcirco a facie ejus turbatus sum,
et considerans eum, timore sollicitor.

BAN ¹⁶ Dieu a rendu craintif mon coeur,
Le Tout-Puissant m'a épouvanté.

KJV ¹⁶ For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

VULC ¹⁶ Deus mollivit cor meum,
et Omnipotens conturbavit me.

BAN ¹⁷ Car ce n'est pas à cause de l'obscurité que je suis anéanti,
Ni à cause de moi, qui suis recouvert de ténèbres.

KJV ¹⁷ Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.

VULC ¹⁷ Non enim perii propter imminentes tenebras,
nec faciem meam operuit caligo.]
