KJV ¹ Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,

WLC ¹ וַיֹּ֣סֶף אִ֭יּוֹב שְׂאֵ֥ת מְשָׁל֗וֹ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;

NEG ² Oh! que ne puis-je être comme aux mois du passé, Comme aux jours où Dieu me gardait,

VULC ² [Quis mihi tribuat ut sim juxta menses pristinos,
secundum dies quibus Deus custodiebat me ?

WLC ² מִֽי־ יִתְּנֵ֥נִי כְיַרְחֵי־ קֶ֑דֶם כִּ֝ימֵ֗י אֱל֣וֹהַּ יִשְׁמְרֵֽנִי׃

KJV ³ When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

NEG ³ Quand sa lampe brillait sur ma tête, Et que sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres!

VULC ³ Quando splendebat lucerna ejus super caput meum,
et ad lumen ejus ambulabam in tenebris :

WLC ³ בְּהִלּ֣וֹ נֵ֭רוֹ עֲלֵ֣י רֹאשִׁ֑י לְ֝אוֹרוֹ אֵ֣לֶךְ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

KJV ⁴ As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;

NEG ⁴ Que ne suis-je comme aux jours de ma vigueur, Où Dieu veillait en ami sur ma tente,

VULC ⁴ sicut fui in diebus adolescentiæ meæ,
quando secreto Deus erat in tabernaculo meo :

WLC ⁴ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר הָ֭יִיתִי בִּימֵ֣י חָרְפִּ֑י בְּס֥וֹד אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ עֲלֵ֣י אָהֳלִֽי׃

KJV ⁵ When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;

NEG ⁵ Quand le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi, Et que mes enfants m'entouraient;

VULC ⁵ quando erat Omnipotens mecum,
et in circuitu meo pueri mei :

WLC ⁵ בְּע֣וֹד שַׁ֭דַּי עִמָּדִ֑י סְבִ֖יבוֹתַ֣י נְעָרָֽי׃

KJV ⁶ When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;

NEG ⁶ Quand mes pieds se baignaient dans la crème Et que le rocher répandait près de moi des ruisseaux d'huile!

VULC ⁶ quando lavabam pedes meos butyro,
et petra fundebat mihi rivos olei :

WLC ⁶ בִּרְחֹ֣ץ הֲלִיכַ֣י בְּחֵמָ֑ה וְצ֥וּר יָצ֥וּק עִ֝מָּדִ֗י פַּלְגֵי־ שָֽׁמֶן׃

KJV ⁷ When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!

NEG ⁷ Si je sortais pour aller à la porte de la ville, Et si je me faisais préparer un siège dans la place,

VULC ⁷ quando procedebam ad portam civitatis,
et in platea parabant cathedram mihi.

WLC ⁷ בְּצֵ֣אתִי שַׁ֣עַר עֲלֵי־ קָ֑רֶת בָּ֝רְח֗וֹב אָכִ֥ין מוֹשָׁבִֽי׃

KJV ⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.

NEG ⁸ Les jeunes gens se retiraient à mon approche, Les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.

VULC ⁸ Videbant me juvenes, et abscondebantur :
et senes assurgentes stabant.

WLC ⁸ רָא֣וּנִי נְעָרִ֣ים וְנֶחְבָּ֑אוּ וִֽ֝ישִׁישִׁים קָ֣מוּ עָמָֽדוּ׃

KJV ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.

NEG ⁹ Les princes arrêtaient leurs discours, Et mettaient la main sur leur bouche;

VULC ⁹ Principes cessabant loqui,
et digitum superponebant ori suo.

WLC ⁹ שָׂ֭רִים עָצְר֣וּ בְמִלִּ֑ים וְ֝כַ֗ף יָשִׂ֥ימוּ לְפִיהֶֽם׃

KJV ¹⁰ The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

NEG ¹⁰ La voix des chefs se taisait, Et leur langue s'attachait à leur palais.

VULC ¹⁰ Vocem suam cohibebant duces,
et lingua eorum gutturi suo adhærebat.

WLC ¹⁰ קוֹל־ נְגִידִ֥ים נֶחְבָּ֑אוּ וּ֝לְשׁוֹנָ֗ם לְחִכָּ֥ם דָּבֵֽקָה׃

KJV ¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

NEG ¹¹ L'oreille qui m'entendait me disait heureux, L'œil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage;

VULC ¹¹ Auris audiens beatificabat me,
et oculus videns testimonium reddebat mihi :

WLC ¹¹ כִּ֤י אֹ֣זֶן שָׁ֭מְעָה וַֽתְּאַשְּׁרֵ֑נִי וְעַ֥יִן רָ֝אֲתָ֗ה וַתְּעִידֵֽנִי׃

KJV ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

NEG ¹² Car je sauvais le pauvre qui implorait du secours, Et l'orphelin qui manquait d'appui.

VULC ¹² eo quod liberassem pauperem vociferantem,
et pupillum cui non esset adjutor.

WLC ¹² כִּֽי־ אֲ֭מַלֵּט עָנִ֣י מְשַׁוֵּ֑עַ וְ֝יָת֗וֹם וְֽלֹא־ עֹזֵ֥ר לֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

NEG ¹³ La bénédiction du malheureux venait sur moi; Je remplissais de joie le cœur de la veuve.

VULC ¹³ Benedictio perituri super me veniebat,
et cor viduæ consolatus sum.

WLC ¹³ בִּרְכַּ֣ת אֹ֭בֵד עָלַ֣י תָּבֹ֑א וְלֵ֖ב אַלְמָנָ֣ה אַרְנִֽן׃

KJV ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

NEG ¹⁴ Je me revêtais de la justice et je lui servais de vêtement, J'avais ma droiture pour manteau et pour turban.

VULC ¹⁴ Justitia indutus sum,
et vestivi me, sicut vestimento et diademate, judicio meo.

WLC ¹⁴ צֶ֣דֶק לָ֭בַשְׁתִּי וַיִּלְבָּשֵׁ֑נִי כִּֽמְעִ֥יל וְ֝צָנִ֗יף מִשְׁפָּטִֽי׃

KJV ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

NEG ¹⁵ J'étais l'œil de l'aveugle Et le pied du boiteux.

VULC ¹⁵ Oculus fui cæco, et pes claudo.

WLC ¹⁵ עֵינַ֣יִם הָ֭יִיתִי לַֽעִוֵּ֑ר וְרַגְלַ֖יִם לַפִּסֵּ֣חַ אָֽנִי׃

KJV ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

NEG ¹⁶ J'étais le père des misérables, J'examinais la cause de l'inconnu;

VULC ¹⁶ Pater eram pauperum,
et causam quam nesciebam diligentissime investigabam.

WLC ¹⁶ אָ֣ב אָ֭נֹכִֽי לָֽאֶבְיוֹנִ֑ים וְרִ֖ב לֹא־ יָדַ֣עְתִּי אֶחְקְרֵֽהוּ׃

KJV ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

NEG ¹⁷ Je brisais la mâchoire de l'injuste, Et j'arrachais de ses dents la proie.

VULC ¹⁷ Conterebam molas iniqui,
et de dentibus illius auferebam prædam.

WLC ¹⁷ וָֽ֭אֲשַׁבְּרָה מְתַלְּע֣וֹת עַוָּ֑ל וּ֝מִשִּׁנָּ֗יו אַשְׁלִ֥יךְ טָֽרֶף׃

KJV ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

NEG ¹⁸ Alors je disais: Je mourrai dans mon nid, Mes jours seront abondants comme le sable;

VULC ¹⁸ Dicebamque : In nidulo meo moriar,
et sicut palma multiplicabo dies.

WLC ¹⁸ וָ֭אֹמַר עִם־ קִנִּ֣י אֶגְוָ֑ע וְ֝כַח֗וֹל אַרְבֶּ֥ה יָמִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁹ My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

NEG ¹⁹ L'eau pénétrera dans mes racines, La rosée passera la nuit sur mes branches;

VULC ¹⁹ Radix mea aperta est secus aquas,
et ros morabitur in messione mea.

WLC ¹⁹ שָׁרְשִׁ֣י פָת֣וּחַ אֱלֵי־ מָ֑יִם וְ֝טַ֗ל יָלִ֥ין בִּקְצִירִֽי׃

KJV ²⁰ My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.

NEG ²⁰ Ma gloire reverdira sans cesse, Et mon arc rajeunira dans ma main.

VULC ²⁰ Gloria mea semper innovabitur,
et arcus meus in manu mea instaurabitur.

WLC ²⁰ כְּ֭בוֹדִי חָדָ֣שׁ עִמָּדִ֑י וְ֝קַשְׁתִּ֗י בְּיָדִ֥י תַחֲלִֽיף׃

KJV ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.

NEG ²¹ On m'écoutait et l'on restait dans l'attente, On gardait le silence devant mes conseils.

VULC ²¹ Qui me audiebant, expectabant sententiam,
et intenti tacebant ad consilium meum.

WLC ²¹ לִֽי־ שָׁמְע֥וּ וְיִחֵ֑לּוּ וְ֝יִדְּמ֗וּ לְמ֣וֹ עֲצָתִֽי׃

KJV ²² After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

NEG ²² Après mes discours, nul ne répliquait, Et ma parole était pour tous une bienfaisante rosée;

VULC ²² Verbis meis addere nihil audebant,
et super illos stillabat eloquium meum.

WLC ²² אַחֲרֵ֣י דְ֭בָרִי לֹ֣א יִשְׁנ֑וּ וְ֝עָלֵ֗ימוֹ תִּטֹּ֥ף מִלָּתִֽי׃

KJV ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

NEG ²³ Ils comptaient sur moi comme sur la pluie, Ils ouvraient la bouche comme pour une pluie du printemps.

VULC ²³ Expectabant me sicut pluviam,
et os suum aperiebant quasi ad imbrem serotinum.

WLC ²³ וְיִֽחֲל֣וּ כַמָּטָ֣ר לִ֑י וּ֝פִיהֶ֗ם פָּעֲר֥וּ לְמַלְקֽוֹשׁ׃

KJV ²⁴ If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

NEG ²⁴ Je leur souriais quand ils perdaient courage, Et l'on ne pouvait chasser la sérénité de mon front.

VULC ²⁴ Siquando ridebam ad eos, non credebant :
et lux vultus mei non cadebat in terram.

WLC ²⁴ אֶשְׂחַ֣ק אֲ֭לֵהֶם לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ינוּ וְא֥וֹר פָּ֝נַ֗י לֹ֣א יַפִּילֽוּן׃

KJV ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

NEG ²⁵ J'aimais à aller vers eux, et je m'asseyais à leur tête; J'étais comme un roi au milieu d'une troupe, Comme un consolateur auprès des affligés.

VULC ²⁵ Si voluissem ire ad eos, sedebam primus :
cumque sederem quasi rex, circumstante exercitu,
eram tamen mœrentium consolator.]
