BAN ² Voici, j'ai ouvert la bouche,
Ma langue s'est mise à parler dans mon palais.

KJV ² Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

WLC ² הִנֵּה־ נָ֭א פָּתַ֣חְתִּי פִ֑י דִּבְּרָ֖ה לְשׁוֹנִ֣י בְחִכִּֽי׃

BAN ³ Je parlerai d'un coeur droit ;
Mes lèvres diront fidèlement ce que je sais.

KJV ³ My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

WLC ³ יֹֽשֶׁר־ לִבִּ֥י אֲמָרָ֑י וְדַ֥עַת שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י בָּר֥וּר מִלֵּֽלוּ׃

BAN ⁴ C'est l'Esprit de Dieu qui m'a fait ;
Le souffle du Puissant m'a donné la vie.

KJV ⁴ The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

WLC ⁴ רֽוּחַ־ אֵ֥ל עָשָׂ֑תְנִי וְנִשְׁמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י תְּחַיֵּֽנִי׃

BAN ⁵ Réponds-moi, si tu le peux,
Prépare tes arguments ; prends position !

KJV ⁵ If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

WLC ⁵ אִם־ תּוּכַ֥ל הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי עֶרְכָ֥ה לְ֝פָנַ֗י הִתְיַצָּֽבָה׃

BAN ⁶ Voici, je suis égal à toi devant Dieu ;
Moi aussi, j'ai été formé d'argile.

KJV ⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

WLC ⁶ הֵן־ אֲנִ֣י כְפִ֣יךָ לָאֵ֑ל מֵ֝חֹ֗מֶר קֹרַ֥צְתִּי גַם־ אָֽנִי׃

BAN ⁷ Voici, ma terreur ne te troublera pas,
Mon poids ne t'accablera pas.

KJV ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

WLC ⁷ הִנֵּ֣ה אֵ֭מָתִי לֹ֣א תְבַעֲתֶ֑ךָּ וְ֝אַכְפִּ֗י עָלֶ֥יךָ לֹא־ יִכְבָּֽד׃

BAN ⁸ Or donc, tu as dit devant moi,
Et j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles :

KJV ⁸ Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

WLC ⁸ אַ֭ךְ אָמַ֣רְתָּ בְאָזְנָ֑י וְק֖וֹל מִלִּ֣ין אֶשְׁמָֽע׃

BAN ⁹ Je suis pur, sans faute,
Je suis net, et il n'y a point d'iniquité en moi.

KJV ⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

WLC ⁹ זַ֥ךְ אֲנִ֗י בְּֽלִ֫י פָ֥שַׁע חַ֥ף אָנֹכִ֑י וְלֹ֖א עָוֺ֣ן לִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁰ Voici, Dieu trouve contre moi des griefs ;
Il me regarde comme son ennemi.

KJV ¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,

WLC ¹⁰ הֵ֣ן תְּ֭נוּאוֹת עָלַ֣י יִמְצָ֑א יַחְשְׁבֵ֖נִי לְאוֹיֵ֣ב לֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹¹ Il met mes pieds dans des ceps,
Il surveille toutes mes voies.

KJV ¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

WLC ¹¹ יָשֵׂ֣ם בַּסַּ֣ד רַגְלָ֑י יִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר כָּל־ אָרְחֹתָֽי׃

BAN ¹² Voici, tu n'as pas raison en cela, je te le dis ;
Car Dieu est plus grand que l'homme.

KJV ¹² Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

WLC ¹² הֶן־ זֹ֣את לֹא־ צָדַ֣קְתָּ אֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־ יִרְבֶּ֥ה אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַ מֵאֱנֽוֹשׁ׃

BAN ¹³ Pourquoi as-tu contesté contre lui
De ce qu'il ne répond à aucune parole ?

KJV ¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

WLC ¹³ מַ֭דּוּעַ אֵלָ֣יו רִיב֑וֹתָ כִּ֥י כָל־ דְּ֝בָרָ֗יו לֹ֣א־ יַעֲנֶֽה׃

BAN ¹⁴ Et pourtant Dieu parle une fois,
Même deux, mais on n'y prend pas garde.

KJV ¹⁴ For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

WLC ¹⁴ כִּֽי־ בְאַחַ֥ת יְדַבֶּר־ אֵ֑ל וּ֝בִשְׁתַּ֗יִם לֹ֣א יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה׃

BAN ¹⁵ En songe, en visions nocturnes,
Quand un profond sommeil tombe sur les hommes
Et qu'ils sont assoupis sur leurs couches,

KJV ¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

WLC ¹⁵ בַּחֲל֤וֹם ׀ חֶזְי֬וֹן לַ֗יְלָה בִּנְפֹ֣ל תַּ֭רְדֵּמָה עַל־ אֲנָשִׁ֑ים בִּ֝תְנוּמ֗וֹת עֲלֵ֣י מִשְׁכָּֽב׃

BAN ¹⁶ Alors il ouvre l'oreille des mortels
Et y scelle les avertissements qu'il leur donne,

KJV ¹⁶ Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,

WLC ¹⁶ אָ֣ז יִ֭גְלֶה אֹ֣זֶן אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּבְמֹ֖סָרָ֣ם יַחְתֹּֽם׃

BAN ¹⁷ Pour détourner l'homme de sa manière d'agir,
Pour empêcher qu'il ne se livre à l'orgueil,

KJV ¹⁷ That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

WLC ¹⁷ לְ֭הָסִיר אָדָ֣ם מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וְגֵוָ֖ה מִגֶּ֣בֶר יְכַסֶּֽה׃

BAN ¹⁸ Pour préserver son âme de la fosse,
Et sa vie du trait qui la menace.

KJV ¹⁸ He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

WLC ¹⁸ יַחְשֹׂ֣ךְ נַ֭פְשׁוֹ מִנִּי־ שָׁ֑חַת וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ מֵעֲבֹ֥ר בַּשָּֽׁלַח׃

BAN ¹⁹ Il est repris aussi par la douleur sur sa couche,
Une lutte continuelle se livre dans ses os ;

KJV ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

WLC ¹⁹ וְהוּכַ֣ח בְּ֭מַכְאוֹב עַל־ מִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ עֲצָמָ֣יו אֵתָֽן׃

BAN ²⁰ Sa vie lui fait prendre en dégoût le pain,
Et son âme la nourriture la plus désirable.

KJV ²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.

WLC ²⁰ וְזִֽהֲמַ֣תּוּ חַיָּת֣וֹ לָ֑חֶם וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ מַאֲכַ֥ל תַּאֲוָֽה׃

BAN ²¹ Sa chair se consume et disparaît,
Ses os, qu'on ne voyait pas, sont mis à nu.

KJV ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

WLC ²¹ יִ֣כֶל בְּשָׂר֣וֹ מֵרֹ֑אִי עַ֝צְמוֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א רֻאּֽוּ׃

BAN ²² Son âme s'approche de la fosse,
Sa vie, de ceux qui donnent la mort.

KJV ²² Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.

WLC ²² וַתִּקְרַ֣ב לַשַּׁ֣חַת נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ לַֽמְמִתִֽים׃

BAN ²³ S'il y a pour lui un ange médiateur,
Un entre mille,
Qui lui annonce ce qu'il doit faire,

KJV ²³ If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:

WLC ²³ אִם־ יֵ֤שׁ עָלָ֨יו ׀ מַלְאָ֗ךְ מֵלִ֗יץ אֶחָ֥ד מִנִּי־ אָ֑לֶף לְהַגִּ֖יד לְאָדָ֣ם יָשְׁרֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁴ Dieu a compassion de lui et dit :
Rachète-le, qu'il ne descende pas dans la fosse ;
J'ai trouvé une rançon !

KJV ²⁴ Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

WLC ²⁴ וַיְחֻנֶּ֗נּוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פְּ֭דָעֵהוּ מֵרֶ֥דֶת שָׁ֗חַת מָצָ֥אתִי כֹֽפֶר׃

BAN ²⁵ Sa chair [alors] prend plus de fraîcheur que dans sa jeunesse,
Il revient aux jours de son adolescence.

KJV ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:

WLC ²⁵ רֻֽטֲפַ֣שׁ בְּשָׂר֣וֹ מִנֹּ֑עַר יָ֝שׁ֗וּב לִימֵ֥י עֲלוּמָֽיו׃

BAN ²⁶ Il prie Dieu, et Dieu lui est propice
Et lui fait voir sa face avec allégresse ;
Il rend à l'homme sa justice.

KJV ²⁶ He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

WLC ²⁶ יֶעְתַּ֤ר אֶל־ אֱל֨וֹהַּ ׀ וַיִּרְצֵ֗הוּ וַיַּ֣רְא פָּ֭נָיו בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה וַיָּ֥שֶׁב לֶ֝אֱנ֗וֹשׁ צִדְקָתֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁷ Il se tourne vers les hommes et dit :
J'avais péché, j'avais enfreint la justice,
Et je n'ai pas été traité comme je l'avais mérité.

KJV ²⁷ He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

WLC ²⁷ יָשֹׁ֤ר ׀ עַל־ אֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חָ֭טָאתִי וְיָשָׁ֥ר הֶעֱוֵ֗יתִי וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥וָה לִֽי׃

BAN ²⁸ Il a racheté mon âme, pour qu'elle ne descendit pas dans la fosse.
Je vis, et me repais de lumière.

KJV ²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

WLC ²⁸ פָּדָ֣ה מֵעֲבֹ֣ר בַּשָּׁ֑חַת בָּא֥וֹר תִּרְאֶֽה׃

BAN ²⁹ Voilà, toutes ces choses, Dieu les fait
Deux fois, même trois, à l'homme,

KJV ²⁹ Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,

WLC ²⁹ הֶן־ כָּל־ אֵ֭לֶּה יִפְעַל־ אֵ֑ל פַּעֲמַ֖יִם שָׁל֣וֹשׁ עִם־ גָּֽבֶר׃

BAN ³⁰ Pour ramener son âme de la fosse,
Pour l'éclairer de la lumière de la vie.

KJV ³⁰ To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

WLC ³⁰ לְהָשִׁ֣יב נַ֭פְשׁוֹ מִנִּי־ שָׁ֑חַת לֵ֝א֗וֹר בְּא֣וֹר הַֽחַיִּים׃

BAN ³¹ Sois attentif, Job, écoute-moi,
Garde le silence, et moi je parlerai.

KJV ³¹ Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.

WLC ³¹ הַקְשֵׁ֖ב אִיּ֥וֹב שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ וְאָנֹכִ֥י אֲדַבֵּֽר׃

BAN ³² Si tu as des paroles, réponds-moi,
Parle, car je désire ta justification.

KJV ³² If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.

WLC ³² אִם־ יֵשׁ־ מִלִּ֥ין הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי דַּ֝בֵּ֗ר כִּֽי־ חָפַ֥צְתִּי צַדְּקֶֽךָּ׃

BAN ³³ Si tu n'as rien à dire, écoute-moi,
Garde le silence, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse.

KJV ³³ If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

WLC ³³ אִם־ אַ֭יִן אַתָּ֥ה שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ֥ חָכְמָֽה׃
