WLC ¹ וַיַּ֥עַן אֱלִיה֗וּא וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ² Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

S21 ² «Sages, écoutez mes propos!
Vous qui êtes des connaisseurs, prêtez l'oreille à ce que je vais dire!

WLC ² שִׁמְע֣וּ חֲכָמִ֣ים מִלָּ֑י וְ֝יֹדְעִ֗ים הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ לִֽי׃

KJV ³ For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.

S21 ³ En effet, l'oreille jauge les propos
tout comme le palais goûte les aliments.

WLC ³ כִּי־ אֹ֭זֶן מִלִּ֣ין תִּבְחָ֑ן וְ֝חֵ֗ךְ יִטְעַ֥ם לֶאֱכֹֽל׃

KJV ⁴ Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.

S21 ⁴ Choisissons pour nous ce qui est juste,
sachons reconnaître entre nous ce qui est bon!

WLC ⁴ מִשְׁפָּ֥ט נִבְחֲרָה־ לָּ֑נוּ נֵדְעָ֖ה בֵינֵ֣ינוּ מַה־ טּֽוֹב׃

KJV ⁵ For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.

S21 ⁵ »Job dit en effet: ‘Je suis juste
et Dieu me refuse justice.

WLC ⁵ כִּֽי־ אָ֭מַר אִיּ֣וֹב צָדַ֑קְתִּי וְ֝אֵ֗ל הֵסִ֥יר מִשְׁפָּטִֽי׃

KJV ⁶ Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.

S21 ⁶ Alors que j'ai raison, je passe pour un menteur.
Ma blessure est incurable alors que je n'ai pas commis de transgression.'

WLC ⁶ עַל־ מִשְׁפָּטִ֥י אֲכַזֵּ֑ב אָנ֖וּשׁ חִצִּ֣י בְלִי־ פָֽשַׁע׃

KJV ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

S21 ⁷ »Y a-t-il un homme tel que Job,
qui boive l'insolence comme l'eau,

WLC ⁷ מִי־ גֶ֥בֶר כְּאִיּ֑וֹב יִֽשְׁתֶּה־ לַּ֥עַג כַּמָּֽיִם׃

KJV ⁸ Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.

S21 ⁸ qui marche en compagnie de ceux qui commettent l'injustice,
qui fasse route avec les hommes méchants?

WLC ⁸ וְאָרַ֣ח לְ֭חֶבְרָה עִם־ פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן וְ֝לָלֶ֗כֶת עִם־ אַנְשֵׁי־ רֶֽשַׁע׃

KJV ⁹ For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

S21 ⁹ En effet, il a dit: ‘L'homme ne gagne rien
à mettre son plaisir en Dieu.'

WLC ⁹ כִּֽי־ אָ֭מַר לֹ֣א יִסְכָּן־ גָּ֑בֶר בִּ֝רְצֹת֗וֹ עִם־ אֱלֹהִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

S21 ¹⁰ »Ecoutez-moi donc, hommes de bon sens!
Dieu n'a rien à voir avec la méchanceté,
le Tout-Puissant n'a rien à voir avec l'injustice.

WLC ¹⁰ לָכֵ֤ן ׀ אַ֥נֲשֵׁ֥י לֵבָ֗ב שִׁמְע֫וּ לִ֥י חָלִ֖לָה לָאֵ֥ל מֵרֶ֗שַׁע וְשַׁדַּ֥י מֵעָֽוֶל׃

KJV ¹¹ For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

S21 ¹¹ Il paie à l'homme le salaire de ses actes,
il traite chacun en fonction de sa conduite.

WLC ¹¹ כִּ֤י פֹ֣עַל אָ֭דָם יְשַׁלֶּם־ ל֑וֹ וּֽכְאֹ֥רַח אִ֝֗ישׁ יַמְצִאֶֽנּוּ׃

KJV ¹² Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

S21 ¹² En vérité, Dieu ne commet pas le mal,
le Tout-Puissant ne fausse pas le droit.

WLC ¹² אַף־ אָמְנָ֗ם אֵ֥ל לֹֽא־ יַרְשִׁ֑יעַ וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י לֹֽא־ יְעַוֵּ֥ת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

KJV ¹³ Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?

S21 ¹³ »Qui l'a chargé de gouverner la terre?
Qui a confié le monde entier à ses soins?

WLC ¹³ מִֽי־ פָקַ֣ד עָלָ֣יו אָ֑רְצָה וּמִ֥י שָׂ֝֗ם תֵּבֵ֥ל כֻּלָּֽהּ׃

KJV ¹⁴ If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

S21 ¹⁴ S'il ne pensait qu'à lui-même,
s'il reprenait son esprit et son souffle,

WLC ¹⁴ אִם־ יָשִׂ֣ים אֵלָ֣יו לִבּ֑וֹ רוּח֥וֹ וְ֝נִשְׁמָת֗וֹ אֵלָ֥יו יֶאֱסֹֽף׃

KJV ¹⁵ All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

S21 ¹⁵ toute créature expirerait d'un seul coup
et l'homme retournerait à la poussière.

WLC ¹⁵ יִגְוַ֣ע כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֣ר יָ֑חַד וְ֝אָדָ֗ם עַל־ עָפָ֥ר יָשֽׁוּב׃

KJV ¹⁶ If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

S21 ¹⁶ »Si tu as de l'intelligence, écoute ceci,
prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles!

WLC ¹⁶ וְאִם־ בִּ֥ינָה שִׁמְעָה־ זֹּ֑את הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינָה לְק֣וֹל מִלָּֽי׃

KJV ¹⁷ Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?

S21 ¹⁷ Celui qui déteste le droit pourrait-il vraiment régner?
Condamnerais-tu le juste, le puissant?

WLC ¹⁷ הַאַ֬ף שׂוֹנֵ֣א מִשְׁפָּ֣ט יַחֲב֑וֹשׁ וְאִם־ צַדִּ֖יק כַּבִּ֣יר תַּרְשִֽׁיעַ׃

KJV ¹⁸ Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?

S21 ¹⁸ Dit-on aux rois: ‘Vous êtes des vauriens'
et aux princes: ‘Vous êtes des crapules'?

WLC ¹⁸ הַאֲמֹ֣ר לְמֶ֣לֶךְ בְּלִיָּ֑עַל רָ֝שָׁ֗ע אֶל־ נְדִיבִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁹ How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

S21 ¹⁹ Lui, il ne favorise pas les chefs
et ne privilégie pas le riche face au pauvre,
parce que tous sont l'œuvre de ses mains.

WLC ¹⁹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ נָשָׂ֨א ׀ פְּנֵ֥י שָׂרִ֗ים וְלֹ֣א נִכַּר־ שׁ֭וֹעַ לִפְנֵי־ דָ֑ל כִּֽי־ מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדָ֣יו כֻּלָּֽם׃

KJV ²⁰ In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.

S21 ²⁰ En un instant, ils meurent.
Au milieu de la nuit, un peuple est ébranlé et disparaît,
le tyran est écarté sans aucune intervention humaine.

WLC ²⁰ רֶ֤גַע ׀ יָמֻתוּ֮ וַחֲצ֪וֹת לָ֥יְלָה יְגֹעֲשׁ֣וּ עָ֣ם וְיַעֲבֹ֑רוּ וְיָסִ֥ירוּ אַ֝בִּ֗יר לֹ֣א בְיָֽד׃

KJV ²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.

S21 ²¹ »En effet, Dieu est attentif à la conduite de l'homme,
il voit tous ses pas.

WLC ²¹ כִּי־ עֵ֭ינָיו עַל־ דַּרְכֵי־ אִ֑ישׁ וְֽכָל־ צְעָדָ֥יו יִרְאֶֽה׃

KJV ²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

S21 ²² Il n'y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort
assez obscures pour cacher ceux qui commettent l'injustice.

WLC ²² אֵֽין־ חֹ֭שֶׁךְ וְאֵ֣ין צַלְמָ֑וֶת לְהִסָּ֥תֶר שָׁ֝֗ם פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃

KJV ²³ For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.

S21 ²³ Dieu n'a pas besoin d'observer longtemps un homme
pour le faire entrer en jugement avec lui.

WLC ²³ כִּ֤י לֹ֣א עַל־ אִ֭ישׁ יָשִׂ֣ים ע֑וֹד לַהֲלֹ֥ךְ אֶל־ אֵ֝֗ל בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

KJV ²⁴ He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.

S21 ²⁴ Il brise les grands sans avoir à faire d'enquête
et il les remplace par d'autres,

WLC ²⁴ יָרֹ֣עַ כַּבִּירִ֣ים לֹא־ חֵ֑קֶר וַיַּעֲמֵ֖ד אֲחֵרִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם׃

KJV ²⁵ Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

S21 ²⁵ car il connaît leur manière d'agir.
En une nuit il les renverse et ils sont écrasés,

WLC ²⁵ לָכֵ֗ן יַ֭כִּיר מַעְבָּֽדֵיהֶ֑ם וְהָ֥פַךְ לַ֝֗יְלָה וְיִדַּכָּֽאוּ׃

KJV ²⁶ He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

S21 ²⁶ il les frappe comme des criminels,
en public.

WLC ²⁶ תַּֽחַת־ רְשָׁעִ֥ים סְפָקָ֗ם בִּמְק֥וֹם רֹאִֽים׃

KJV ²⁷ Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:

S21 ²⁷ C'est parce qu'ils se sont détournés de lui,
parce qu'ils n'ont pas prêté attention à toutes ses voies.

WLC ²⁷ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ כֵּ֭ן סָ֣רוּ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֑יו וְכָל־ דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו לֹ֣א הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃

KJV ²⁸ So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.

S21 ²⁸ Ils ont fait monter vers lui le cri du faible,
or il entend le cri des plus humbles.

WLC ²⁸ לְהָבִ֣יא עָ֭לָיו צַֽעֲקַת־ דָּ֑ל וְצַעֲקַ֖ת עֲנִיִּ֣ים יִשְׁמָֽע׃

KJV ²⁹ When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

S21 ²⁹ »S'il choisit la tranquillité, qui prononcera une condamnation?
S'il cache son visage, qui pourra le voir?
Il domine sur les nations aussi bien que sur les individus

WLC ²⁹ וְה֤וּא יַשְׁקִ֨ט ׀ וּמִ֥י יַרְשִׁ֗עַ וְיַסְתֵּ֣ר פָּ֭נִים וּמִ֣י יְשׁוּרֶ֑נּוּ וְעַל־ גּ֖וֹי וְעַל־ אָדָ֣ם יָֽחַד׃

KJV ³⁰ That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

S21 ³⁰ pour empêcher l'homme impie de régner
et d'être un piège pour le peuple.

WLC ³⁰ מִ֭מְּלֹךְ אָדָ֥ם חָנֵ֗ף מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי עָֽם׃

KJV ³¹ Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:

S21 ³¹ En effet, a-t-il déjà dit à Dieu:
‘J'ai supporté les conséquences de ma faute, je cesserai de faire le mal.

WLC ³¹ כִּֽי־ אֶל־ אֵ֭ל הֶאָמַ֥ר נָשָׂ֗אתִי לֹ֣א אֶחְבֹּֽל׃

KJV ³² That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

S21 ³² Montre-moi toi-même ce que je ne vois pas encore:
si j'ai commis des injustices, je n'en commettrai plus'?

WLC ³² בִּלְעֲדֵ֣י אֶ֭חֱזֶה אַתָּ֣ה הֹרֵ֑נִי אִֽם־ עָ֥וֶל פָּ֝עַ֗לְתִּי לֹ֣א אֹסִֽיף׃

KJV ³³ Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.

S21 ³³ »Est-ce d'après toi que Dieu rendra justice,
alors que tu fais preuve de mépris?
C'est à toi de choisir, pas à moi.
Ce que tu sais, dis-le donc!

WLC ³³ הַֽמֵעִמְּךָ֬ יְשַׁלְמֶ֨נָּה כִּֽי־ מָאַ֗סְתָּ כִּי־ אַתָּ֣ה תִבְחַ֣ר וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּֽמַה־ יָדַ֥עְתָּ דַבֵּֽר׃

KJV ³⁴ Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.

S21 ³⁴ Les hommes de bon sens
ainsi que les sages qui m'écoutent me diront:

WLC ³⁴ אַנְשֵׁ֣י לֵ֭בָב יֹ֣אמְרוּ לִ֑י וְגֶ֥בֶר חָ֝כָ֗ם שֹׁמֵ֥עַֽ לִֽי׃

KJV ³⁵ Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

S21 ³⁵ ‘Job parle sans rien savoir
et ses paroles manquent de discernement.

WLC ³⁵ אִ֭יּוֹב לֹא־ בְדַ֣עַת יְדַבֵּ֑ר וּ֝דְבָרָ֗יו לֹ֣א בְהַשְׂכֵּֽיל׃

KJV ³⁶ My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.

S21 ³⁶ Que Job soit donc mis à l'épreuve jusqu'au bout,
puisqu'il répond comme le feraient des hommes adonnés au mal!

WLC ³⁶ אָבִ֗י יִבָּחֵ֣ן אִיּ֣וֹב עַד־ נֶ֑צַח עַל־ תְּ֝שֻׁבֹ֗ת בְּאַנְשֵׁי־ אָֽוֶן׃

KJV ³⁷ For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

S21 ³⁷ En effet, il ajoute la révolte à son péché;
il sème le doute au milieu de nous
et il multiplie ses paroles contre Dieu.'»

WLC ³⁷ כִּ֥י יֹ֘סִ֤יף עַֽל־ חַטָּאת֣וֹ פֶ֭שַׁע בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ יִסְפּ֑וֹק וְיֶ֖רֶב אֲמָרָ֣יו לָאֵֽל׃
