BAN ² Ecoutez donc le fracas de sa voix,
Le grondement qui sort de sa bouche !

KJV ² Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.

WLC ² שִׁמְע֤וּ שָׁמ֣וֹעַ בְּרֹ֣גֶז קֹל֑וֹ וְ֝הֶ֗גֶה מִפִּ֥יו יֵצֵֽא׃

BAN ³ Il le fait retentir sous tous les cieux,
Et ses éclairs vont jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.

KJV ³ He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

WLC ³ תַּֽחַת־ כָּל־ הַשָּׁמַ֥יִם יִשְׁרֵ֑הוּ וְ֝אוֹר֗וֹ עַל־ כַּנְפ֥וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ⁴ Aussitôt sa voix mugit,
Il tonne de sa voix majestueuse ;
Quand sa voix se fait entendre, ses foudres ne sont plus dans sa main.

KJV ⁴ After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.

WLC ⁴ אַחֲרָ֤יו ׀ יִשְׁאַג־ ק֗וֹל יַ֭רְעֵם בְּק֣וֹל גְּאוֹנ֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א יְ֝עַקְּבֵ֗ם כִּֽי־ יִשָּׁמַ֥ע קוֹלֽוֹ׃

BAN ⁵ Dieu tonne merveilleusement de sa voix ;
Il fait de grandes choses, que nous ne connaissons pas.

KJV ⁵ God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

WLC ⁵ יַרְעֵ֤ם אֵ֣ל בְּ֭קוֹלוֹ נִפְלָא֑וֹת עֹשֶׂ֥ה גְ֝דֹל֗וֹת וְלֹ֣א נֵדָֽע׃

BAN ⁶ Car à la neige il dit : Tombe sur la terre ;
Il le dit à la pluie, aux pluies torrentielles les plus fortes.

KJV ⁶ For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

WLC ⁶ כִּ֤י לַשֶּׁ֨לַג ׀ יֹאמַ֗ר הֱוֵ֫א אָ֥רֶץ וְגֶ֥שֶׁם מָטָ֑ר וְ֝גֶ֗שֶׁם מִטְר֥וֹת עֻזּֽוֹ׃

BAN ⁷ Il met les scellés sur la main de tout homme,
Afin que tous ceux qu'il a créés comprennent.

KJV ⁷ He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

WLC ⁷ בְּיַד־ כָּל־ אָדָ֥ם יַחְתּ֑וֹם לָ֝דַ֗עַת כָּל־ אַנְשֵׁ֥י מַעֲשֵֽׂהוּ׃

BAN ⁸ L'animal entre dans son gîte,
Et demeure dans sa tanière.

KJV ⁸ Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.

WLC ⁸ וַתָּבֹ֣א חַיָּ֣ה בְמוֹ־ אָ֑רֶב וּבִמְע֖וֹנֹתֶ֣יהָ תִשְׁכֹּֽן׃

BAN ⁹ La tempête sort de sa retraite,
Et les vents violents amènent la froidure.

KJV ⁹ Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.

WLC ⁹ מִן־ הַ֭חֶדֶר תָּב֣וֹא סוּפָ֑ה וּֽמִמְּזָרִ֥ים קָרָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁰ Au souffle de Dieu se produit la glace,
Et l'étendue des eaux est à l'étroit.

KJV ¹⁰ By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.

WLC ¹⁰ מִנִּשְׁמַת־ אֵ֥ל יִתֶּן־ קָ֑רַח וְרֹ֖חַב מַ֣יִם בְּמוּצָֽק׃

BAN ¹¹ Il charge d'humidité les nuages ;
Il étend au loin ses nuées lumineuses.

KJV ¹¹ Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:

WLC ¹¹ אַף־ בְּ֭רִי יַטְרִ֣יחַ עָ֑ב יָ֝פִ֗יץ עֲנַ֣ן אוֹרֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹² Celles-ci se tournent de côté et d'autre selon ses desseins,
Pour faire tout ce qu'il leur ordonne,
En descendant sur la surface de la terre.

KJV ¹² And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.

WLC ¹² וְה֤וּא מְסִבּ֨וֹת ׀ מִתְהַפֵּ֣ךְ לְפָעֳלָ֑ם כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְצַוֵּ֓ם ׀ עַל־ פְּנֵ֖י תֵבֵ֣ל אָֽרְצָה׃

BAN ¹³ Il les envoie, soit pour châtier, si sa terre en a besoin,
Soit en témoignage de bonté.

KJV ¹³ He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.

WLC ¹³ אִם־ לְשֵׁ֥בֶט אִם־ לְאַרְצ֑וֹ אִם־ לְ֝חֶ֗סֶד יַמְצִאֵֽהוּ׃

BAN ¹⁴ Prête l'oreille à ceci, ô Job ;
Arrête-toi et considère les merveilles du Dieu fort.

KJV ¹⁴ Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

WLC ¹⁴ הַאֲזִ֣ינָה זֹּ֣את אִיּ֑וֹב עֲ֝מֹ֗ד וְהִתְבּוֹנֵ֤ן ׀ נִפְלְא֬וֹת אֵֽל׃

BAN ¹⁵ Sais-tu comment Dieu les dispose,
Et comment il fait éclater la lumière de ses nues ?

KJV ¹⁵ Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?

WLC ¹⁵ הֲ֭תֵדַע בְּשׂוּם־ אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְ֝הוֹפִ֗יעַ א֣וֹר עֲנָנֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁶ Comprends-tu le balancement des nuages,
Les merveilles de celui qui est parfaitement sage ?

KJV ¹⁶ Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

WLC ¹⁶ הֲ֭תֵדַע עַל־ מִפְלְשֵׂי־ עָ֑ב מִ֝פְלְא֗וֹת תְּמִ֣ים דֵּעִֽים׃

BAN ¹⁷ Toi dont les habits deviennent brûlants
Quand la terre est immobile sous le vent du midi,

KJV ¹⁷ How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?

WLC ¹⁷ אֲשֶׁר־ בְּגָדֶ֥יךָ חַמִּ֑ים בְּהַשְׁקִ֥ט אֶ֝֗רֶץ מִדָּרֽוֹם׃

BAN ¹⁸ Peux-tu, comme lui, étendre les cieux ;
Les rendre solides comme un miroir de fonte ?

KJV ¹⁸ Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

WLC ¹⁸ תַּרְקִ֣יעַ עִ֭מּוֹ לִשְׁחָקִ֑ים חֲ֝זָקִ֗ים כִּרְאִ֥י מוּצָֽק׃

BAN ¹⁹ Fais-nous savoir ce que nous devons lui dire.
Nous ne pouvons rien avancer à cause de [nos] ténèbres.

KJV ¹⁹ Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.

WLC ¹⁹ ה֭וֹדִיעֵנוּ מַה־ נֹּ֣אמַר ל֑וֹ לֹ֥א־ נַ֝עֲרֹ֗ךְ מִפְּנֵי־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

BAN ²⁰ Lui annoncera-t-on que je veux parler ?
Quelqu'un a-t-il jamais désiré être englouti ?

KJV ²⁰ Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.

WLC ²⁰ הַֽיְסֻפַּר־ ל֭וֹ כִּ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר אִֽם־ אָ֥מַר אִ֝֗ישׁ כִּ֣י יְבֻלָּֽע׃

BAN ²¹ Et maintenant on n'a jamais pu regarder la lumière,
Quand elle brille entre les nuages
Après qu'un vent a passé et les a dissipés.

KJV ²¹ And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

WLC ²¹ וְעַתָּ֤ה ׀ לֹ֘א רָ֤אוּ א֗וֹר בָּהִ֣יר ה֭וּא בַּשְּׁחָקִ֑ים וְר֥וּחַ עָ֝בְרָ֗ה וַֽתְּטַהֲרֵֽם׃

BAN ²² L'or vient du septentrion ;
Mais Dieu est entouré d'un éclat redoutable ;

KJV ²² Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.

WLC ²² מִ֭צָּפוֹן זָהָ֣ב יֶֽאֱתֶ֑ה עַל־ אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ נ֣וֹרָא הֽוֹד׃

BAN ²³ Le Puissant, nous ne saurions l'atteindre,
Lui qui est grand en force et en jugement
Et qui ne fait pas fléchir la pleine justice.

KJV ²³ Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

WLC ²³ שַׁדַּ֣י לֹֽא־ מְ֭צָאנֻהוּ שַׂגִּיא־ כֹ֑חַ וּמִשְׁפָּ֥ט וְרֹב־ צְ֝דָקָ֗ה לֹ֣א יְעַנֶּֽה׃

BAN ²⁴ Que les hommes donc le craignent !
Il ne prend point garde à ceux qui se croient sages.

KJV ²⁴ Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

WLC ²⁴ לָ֭כֵן יְרֵא֣וּהוּ אֲנָשִׁ֑ים לֹֽא־ יִ֝רְאֶ֗ה כָּל־ חַכְמֵי־ לֵֽב׃

BAN ¹ L'Eternel répondit à Job du milieu du tourbillon et dit :

KJV ¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

WLC ¹ וַיַּֽעַן־ יְהוָ֣ה אֶת־ אִ֭יּוֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

BAN ² Qui donc obscurcit le conseil
Par des discours sans connaissance ?

KJV ² Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

WLC ² מִ֤י זֶ֨ה ׀ מַחְשִׁ֖יךְ עֵצָ֥ה בְמִלִּ֗ין בְּֽלִי־ דָֽעַת׃

BAN ³ Voyons, ceins tes reins comme un homme ;
Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

KJV ³ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

WLC ³ אֱזָר־ נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ וְ֝אֶשְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃

BAN ⁴ Où étais-tu quand j'ai fondé la terre ?
Parle, si tu possèdes l'intelligence.

KJV ⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

WLC ⁴ אֵיפֹ֣ה הָ֭יִיתָ בְּיָסְדִי־ אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־ יָדַ֥עְתָּ בִינָֽה׃

BAN ⁵ Qui en a fixé les mesures, si tu le sais,
Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau ?

KJV ⁵ Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

WLC ⁵ מִי־ שָׂ֣ם מְ֭מַדֶּיהָ כִּ֣י תֵדָ֑ע א֤וֹ מִֽי־ נָטָ֖ה עָלֶ֣יהָ קָּֽו׃

BAN ⁶ Sur quoi ses piliers ont-ils été fondés,
Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,

KJV ⁶ Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

WLC ⁶ עַל־ מָ֭ה אֲדָנֶ֣יהָ הָטְבָּ֑עוּ א֥וֹ מִֽי־ יָ֝רָ֗ה אֶ֣בֶן פִּנָּתָֽהּ׃

BAN ⁷ Alors que les étoiles du matin chantaient en choeur,
Que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie !

KJV ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

WLC ⁷ בְּרָן־ יַ֭חַד כּ֣וֹכְבֵי בֹ֑קֶר וַ֝יָּרִ֗יעוּ כָּל־ בְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃

BAN ⁸ Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes,
Quand elle sortit avec force du sein maternel ;

KJV ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

WLC ⁸ וַיָּ֣סֶךְ בִּדְלָתַ֣יִם יָ֑ם בְּ֝גִיח֗וֹ מֵרֶ֥חֶם יֵצֵֽא׃

BAN ⁹ Quand je lui donnai les nuages pour vêtements,
Les sombres vapeurs pour langes ;

KJV ⁹ When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

WLC ⁹ בְּשׂוּמִ֣י עָנָ֣ן לְבֻשׁ֑וֹ וַ֝עֲרָפֶ֗ל חֲתֻלָּתֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Quand je lui donnai pour limites des berges abruptes,
Que je lui mis des barres et des portes ;

KJV ¹⁰ And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

WLC ¹⁰ וָאֶשְׁבֹּ֣ר עָלָ֣יו חֻקִּ֑י וָֽ֝אָשִׂ֗ים בְּרִ֣יחַ וּדְלָתָֽיִם׃

BAN ¹¹ Et que je dis : Jusqu'ici tu viendras, et pas plus loin ;
Ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots !

KJV ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

WLC ¹¹ וָאֹמַ֗ר עַד־ פֹּ֣ה תָ֭בוֹא וְלֹ֣א תֹסִ֑יף וּפֹ֥א־ יָ֝שִׁ֗ית בִּגְא֥וֹן גַּלֶּֽיךָ׃

BAN ¹² As-tu, de ta vie, commandé au matin,
As-tu assigné sa place à l'aurore,

KJV ¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

WLC ¹² הְֽ֭מִיָּמֶיךָ צִוִּ֣יתָ בֹּ֑קֶר מְקֹמֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹³ Pour qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre,
Et qu'elle en secoue les méchants ?

KJV ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

WLC ¹³ לֶ֭אֱחֹז בְּכַנְפ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְיִנָּעֲר֖וּ רְשָׁים מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

BAN ¹⁴ La terre est transformée comme l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte ;
Toutes choses se présentent comme un [riche] vêtement ;

KJV ¹⁴ It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

WLC ¹⁴ תִּ֭תְהַפֵּךְ כְּחֹ֣מֶר חוֹתָ֑ם וְ֝יִֽתְיַצְּב֗וּ כְּמ֣וֹ לְבֽוּשׁ׃

BAN ¹⁵ Les méchants sont privés de leur lumière,
Le bras qui se levait [déjà] est brisé.

KJV ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

WLC ¹⁵ וְיִמָּנַ֣ע מֵרְשָׁים אוֹרָ֑ם וּזְר֥וֹעַ רָ֝מָ֗ה תִּשָּׁבֵֽר׃

BAN ¹⁶ Es-tu entré jusqu'aux sources de la mer ?
T'es-tu promené au fond de l'abîme ?

KJV ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

WLC ¹⁶ הֲ֭בָאתָ עַד־ נִבְכֵי־ יָ֑ם וּבְחֵ֥קֶר תְּ֝ה֗וֹם הִתְהַלָּֽכְתָּ׃

BAN ¹⁷ Les portes de la mort se sont-elles montrées à toi ?
As-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort ?

KJV ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

WLC ¹⁷ הֲנִגְל֣וּ לְ֭ךָ שַׁעֲרֵי־ מָ֑וֶת וְשַׁעֲרֵ֖י צַלְמָ֣וֶת תִּרְאֶֽה׃

BAN ¹⁸ As-tu embrassé du regard les vastes espaces de la terre ?
Parle, si tu connais tout cela !

KJV ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

WLC ¹⁸ הִ֭תְבֹּנַנְתָּ עַד־ רַחֲבֵי־ אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־ יָדַ֥עְתָּ כֻלָּֽהּ׃

BAN ¹⁹ Quel est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière ?
Et les ténèbres, sais-tu où est leur résidence,

KJV ¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

WLC ¹⁹ אֵי־ זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ יִשְׁכָּן־ א֑וֹר וְ֝חֹ֗שֶׁךְ אֵי־ זֶ֥ה מְקֹמֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁰ Pour aller les chercher dans leur domaine
Et pour distinguer les sentiers de leur demeure ?

KJV ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

WLC ²⁰ כִּ֣י תִ֭קָּחֶנּוּ אֶל־ גְּבוּל֑וֹ וְכִֽי־ תָ֝בִ֗ין נְתִיב֥וֹת בֵּיתֽוֹ׃

BAN ²¹ Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né,
Le nombre de tes jours est grand !

KJV ²¹ Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

WLC ²¹ יָ֭דַעְתָּ כִּי־ אָ֣ז תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וּמִסְפַּ֖ר יָמֶ֣יךָ רַבִּֽים׃

BAN ²² Es-tu entré jusqu'aux trésors de la neige ?
As-tu vu les trésors de la grêle,

KJV ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

WLC ²² הֲ֭בָאתָ אֶל־ אֹצְר֣וֹת שָׁ֑לֶג וְאֹצְר֖וֹת בָּרָ֣ד תִּרְאֶֽה׃

BAN ²³ Que j'ai réservés pour le temps de la détresse,
Pour le jour de la bataille et de la guerre ?

KJV ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

WLC ²³ אֲשֶׁר־ חָשַׂ֥כְתִּי לְעֶת־ צָ֑ר לְי֥וֹם קְ֝רָ֗ב וּמִלְחָמָֽה׃

BAN ²⁴ Par quel chemin la lumière se répand-elle,
Et le vent d'orient souffle-t-il sur la terre ?

KJV ²⁴ By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

WLC ²⁴ אֵי־ זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ יֵחָ֣לֶק א֑וֹר יָפֵ֖ץ קָדִ֣ים עֲלֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ²⁵ Qui a ouvert des canaux à la pluie,
Tracé la route aux éclairs,

KJV ²⁵ Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

WLC ²⁵ מִֽי־ פִלַּ֣ג לַשֶּׁ֣טֶף תְּעָלָ֑ה וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֽוֹת׃

BAN ²⁶ Pour qu'il pleuve sur un pays sans habitants,
Sur un désert où il n'y a point d'hommes,

KJV ²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

WLC ²⁶ לְ֭הַמְטִיר עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ לֹא־ אִ֑ישׁ מִ֝דְבָּ֗ר לֹא־ אָדָ֥ם בּֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁷ Pour rassasier les solitudes désolées,
Et pour faire germer une fraîche verdure !

KJV ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

WLC ²⁷ לְהַשְׂבִּ֣יעַ שֹׁ֭אָה וּמְשֹׁאָ֑ה וּ֝לְהַצְמִ֗יחַ מֹ֣צָא דֶֽשֶׁא׃

BAN ²⁸ La pluie a-t-elle un père,
Ou qui a engendré les gouttes de rosée ?

KJV ²⁸ Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

WLC ²⁸ הֲיֵשׁ־ לַמָּטָ֥ר אָ֑ב א֥וֹ מִי־ ה֝וֹלִ֗יד אֶגְלֵי־ טָֽל׃

BAN ²⁹ Du sein de qui est sortie la glace,
Et le givre du ciel, qui l'a enfanté ?

KJV ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

WLC ²⁹ מִבֶּ֣טֶן מִ֭י יָצָ֣א הַקָּ֑רַח וּכְפֹ֥ר שָׁ֝מַיִם מִ֣י יְלָדֽוֹ׃

BAN ³⁰ Les eaux se durcissent comme de la pierre,
Et la surface de l'abîme devient solide.

KJV ³⁰ The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

WLC ³⁰ כָּ֭אֶבֶן מַ֣יִם יִתְחַבָּ֑אוּ וּפְנֵ֥י תְ֝ה֗וֹם יִתְלַכָּֽדוּ׃

BAN ³¹ Est-ce toi qui noues les liens des Pléiades,
Ou qui détaches les cordes d'Orion ?

KJV ³¹ Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

WLC ³¹ הַֽ֭תְקַשֵּׁר מַעֲדַנּ֣וֹת כִּימָ֑ה אֽוֹ־ מֹשְׁכ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל תְּפַתֵּֽחַ׃

BAN ³² Fais-tu sortir les Hyades en leur temps ?
Conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits ?

KJV ³² Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

WLC ³² הֲתֹצִ֣יא מַזָּר֣וֹת בְּעִתּ֑וֹ וְ֝עַ֗יִשׁ עַל־ בָּנֶ֥יהָ תַנְחֵֽם׃

KJV ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

WLC ³³ הֲ֭יָדַעְתָּ חֻקּ֣וֹת שָׁמָ֑יִם אִם־ תָּשִׂ֖ים מִשְׁטָר֣וֹ בָאָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ³⁴ Elèves-tu la voix jusqu'aux nues,
Tellement que des torrents d'eau te couvrent ?

KJV ³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

WLC ³⁴ הֲתָרִ֣ים לָעָ֣ב קוֹלֶ֑ךָ וְֽשִׁפְעַת־ מַ֥יִם תְּכַסֶּֽךָּ׃

BAN ³⁵ Les éclairs partent-ils à ton commandement,
Et te disent-ils : Nous voici ?

KJV ³⁵ Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

WLC ³⁵ הַֽתְשַׁלַּ֣ח בְּרָקִ֣ים וְיֵלֵ֑כוּ וְיֹאמְר֖וּ לְךָ֣ הִנֵּֽנוּ׃

BAN ³⁶ Qui a donné de la sagesse aux sombres nuages,
Ou qui a donné de l'intelligence aux nuées ?

KJV ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

WLC ³⁶ מִי־ שָׁ֭ת בַּטֻּח֣וֹת חָכְמָ֑ה א֤וֹ מִֽי־ נָתַ֖ן לַשֶּׂ֣כְוִי בִינָֽה׃

BAN ³⁷ Qui compte avec sagesse les nues,
Et les outres du ciel, qui les incline,

KJV ³⁷ Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

WLC ³⁷ מִֽי־ יְסַפֵּ֣ר שְׁחָקִ֣ים בְּחָכְמָ֑ה וְנִבְלֵ֥י שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם מִ֣י יַשְׁכִּֽיב׃

BAN ³⁸ Quand la poussière coule, puis se durcit,
Et que les mottes de terre se soudent entre elles ?

KJV ³⁸ When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

WLC ³⁸ בְּצֶ֣קֶת עָ֭פָר לַמּוּצָ֑ק וּרְגָבִ֥ים יְדֻבָּֽקוּ׃

BAN ¹ Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne ?
Assouvis-tu la faim des lionceaux

KJV ¹ Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

WLC ¹ הֲיָדַ֗עְתָּ עֵ֭ת לֶ֣דֶת יַעֲלֵי־ סָ֑לַע חֹלֵ֖ל אַיָּל֣וֹת תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃

BAN ² Quand ils se courbent dans les cavernes,
Qu'ils se tiennent en embuscade dans les taillis ?

KJV ² Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

WLC ² תִּסְפֹּ֣ר יְרָחִ֣ים תְּמַלֶּ֑אנָה וְ֝יָדַ֗עְתָּ עֵ֣ת לִדְתָּֽנָה׃

BAN ³ Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture,
Quand ses petits crient à Dieu,
Qu'ils errent sans nourriture ?

KJV ³ They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

WLC ³ תִּ֭כְרַעְנָה יַלְדֵיהֶ֣ן תְּפַלַּ֑חְנָה חֶבְלֵיהֶ֥ם תְּשַׁלַּֽחְנָה׃

BAN ⁴ Sais-tu le temps où les chèvres des rochers mettent bas ?
As-tu observé quand les biches sont dans les douleurs ?

KJV ⁴ Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

WLC ⁴ יַחְלְמ֣וּ בְ֭נֵיהֶם יִרְבּ֣וּ בַבָּ֑ר יָ֝צְא֗וּ וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥בוּ לָֽמוֹ׃

BAN ⁵ Comptes-tu les mois de leur gestation,
Sais-tu le temps où elles font leurs petits ?

KJV ⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

WLC ⁵ מִֽי־ שִׁלַּ֣ח פֶּ֣רֶא חָפְשִׁ֑י וּמֹסְר֥וֹת עָ֝ר֗וֹד מִ֣י פִתֵּֽחַ׃

BAN ⁶ Elles se courbent, elles mettent bas leur portée,
Elles se délivrent de leurs douleurs.

KJV ⁶ Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.

WLC ⁶ אֲשֶׁר־ שַׂ֣מְתִּי עֲרָבָ֣ה בֵית֑וֹ וּֽמִשְׁכְּנוֹתָ֥יו מְלֵֽחָה׃

BAN ⁷ Leurs petits deviennent forts, ils grandissent en pleine campagne ;
Les voilà partis pour ne plus revenir vers elles !

KJV ⁷ He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.

WLC ⁷ יִ֭שְׂחַק לַהֲמ֣וֹן קִרְיָ֑ה תְּשֻׁא֥וֹת נ֝וֹגֵ֗שׂ לֹ֣א יִשְׁמָֽע׃

BAN ⁸ Qui a donné la liberté à l'onagre ?
Qui a délié les liens de l'âne sauvage ?

KJV ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

WLC ⁸ יְת֣וּר הָרִ֣ים מִרְעֵ֑הוּ וְאַחַ֖ר כָּל־ יָר֣וֹק יִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃

BAN ⁹ J'ai fait de la steppe sa demeure,
De la terre salée son habitation.

KJV ⁹ Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

WLC ⁹ הֲיֹ֣אבֶה רֵּ֣ים עָבְדֶ֑ךָ אִם־ יָ֝לִ֗ין עַל־ אֲבוּסֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Il se rit du tumulte des villes,
Il n'entend pas les cris d'un cocher.

KJV ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

WLC ¹⁰ הֲ‍ֽתִקְשָׁר־ רֵ֭ים בְּתֶ֣לֶם עֲבֹת֑וֹ אִם־ יְשַׂדֵּ֖ד עֲמָקִ֣ים אַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃

BAN ¹¹ Il erre sur les montagnes pour trouver sa pâture,
Il est à la recherche de tout ce qui verdoie.

KJV ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

WLC ¹¹ הֲֽתִבְטַח־ בּ֭וֹ כִּי־ רַ֣ב כֹּח֑וֹ וְתַעֲזֹ֖ב אֵלָ֣יו יְגִיעֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹² Le buffle voudra-t-il te servir,
Passera-t-il la nuit près de ta crèche ?

KJV ¹² Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?

WLC ¹² הֲתַאֲמִ֣ין בּ֭וֹ כִּי־ זַרְעֶ֑ךָ וְֽגָרְנְךָ֥ יֶאֱסֹֽף׃

BAN ¹³ Attacheras-tu le buffle avec une corde pour le faire labourer ?
Te suivra-t-il pour herser les vallées !

KJV ¹³ Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

WLC ¹³ כְּנַף־ רְנָנִ֥ים נֶעֱלָ֑סָה אִם־ אֶ֝בְרָ֗ה חֲסִידָ֥ה וְנֹצָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁴ Te fieras-tu à lui parce que sa force est grande ?
Lui remettras-tu tes travaux ?

KJV ¹⁴ Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

WLC ¹⁴ כִּֽי־ תַעֲזֹ֣ב לָאָ֣רֶץ בֵּצֶ֑יהָ וְֽעַל־ עָפָ֥ר תְּחַמֵּֽם׃

BAN ¹⁵ Compteras-tu sur lui pour amasser tes semailles
Et amasser [le blé] sur ton aire ?

KJV ¹⁵ And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.

WLC ¹⁵ וַ֭תִּשְׁכַּח כִּי־ רֶ֣גֶל תְּזוּרֶ֑הָ וְחַיַּ֖ת הַשָּׂדֶ֣ה תְּדוּשֶֽׁהָ׃

BAN ¹⁶ L'aile de l'autruche s'agite joyeuse ;
Est-ce l'aile et le duvet de la cigogne ?

KJV ¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her's: her labour is in vain without fear;

WLC ¹⁶ הִקְשִׁ֣יחַ בָּנֶ֣יהָ לְּלֹא־ לָ֑הּ לְרִ֖יק יְגִיעָ֣הּ בְּלִי־ פָֽחַד׃

BAN ¹⁷ Non, elle abandonne ses oeufs à la terre,
Elle les fait chauffer sur la poussière.

KJV ¹⁷ Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

WLC ¹⁷ כִּֽי־ הִשָּׁ֣הּ אֱל֣וֹהַּ חָכְמָ֑ה וְלֹא־ חָ֥לַק לָ֝֗הּ בַּבִּינָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁸ Elle oublie qu'un pied peut les écraser,
Que les bêtes sauvages peuvent les fouler.

KJV ¹⁸ What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

WLC ¹⁸ כָּ֭עֵת בַּמָּר֣וֹם תַּמְרִ֑יא תִּֽשְׂחַ֥ק לַ֝סּ֗וּס וּלְרֹֽכְבֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁹ Elle traite durement ses petits, comme s'ils n'étaient pas à elle ;
Son travail sera vain, elle ne s'en émeut point.

KJV ¹⁹ Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?

WLC ¹⁹ הֲתִתֵּ֣ן לַסּ֣וּס גְּבוּרָ֑ה הֲתַלְבִּ֖ישׁ צַוָּאר֣וֹ רַעְמָֽה׃

BAN ²⁰ Car Dieu lui a refusé la sagesse,
Il ne lui a pas départi d'intelligence.

KJV ²⁰ Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.

WLC ²⁰ הְֽ֭תַרְעִישֶׁנּוּ כָּאַרְבֶּ֑ה ה֖וֹד נַחְר֣וֹ אֵימָֽה׃

BAN ²¹ Quand elle prend son essor,
Elle se rit du cheval et de son cavalier.

KJV ²¹ He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.

WLC ²¹ יַחְפְּר֣וּ בָ֭עֵמֶק וְיָשִׂ֣ישׂ בְּכֹ֑חַ יֵ֝צֵ֗א לִקְרַאת־ נָֽשֶׁק׃

BAN ²² Est-ce toi qui donnes au cheval la force,
Qui revêts son cou d'une crinière frémissante ?

KJV ²² He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

WLC ²² יִשְׂחַ֣ק לְ֭פַחַד וְלֹ֣א יֵחָ֑ת וְלֹֽא־ יָ֝שׁ֗וּב מִפְּנֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃

BAN ²³ Le fais-tu bondir comme la sauterelle ?
Quand il hennit fièrement, c'est la terreur !

KJV ²³ The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

WLC ²³ עָ֭לָיו תִּרְנֶ֣ה אַשְׁפָּ֑ה לַ֖הַב חֲנִ֣ית וְכִידֽוֹן׃

BAN ²⁴ Il creuse le sol dans la vallée, et se réjouit de sa force,
Il s'élance au-devant des armes.

KJV ²⁴ He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

WLC ²⁴ בְּרַ֣עַשׁ וְ֭רֹגֶז יְגַמֶּא־ אָ֑רֶץ וְלֹֽא־ יַ֝אֲמִ֗ין כִּי־ ק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָֽר׃

BAN ²⁵ Il se rit de la frayeur, il ne tremble pas,
Il ne recule pas devant l'épée.

KJV ²⁵ He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

WLC ²⁵ בְּדֵ֤י שֹׁפָ֨ר ׀ יֹ֘אמַ֤ר הֶאָ֗ח וּֽ֭מֵרָחוֹק יָרִ֣יחַ מִלְחָמָ֑ה רַ֥עַם שָׂ֝רִים וּתְרוּעָֽה׃

BAN ²⁶ Sur lui résonne le carquois,
Brillent la lance et le javelot.

KJV ²⁶ Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

WLC ²⁶ הֲ‍ֽ֭מִבִּינָ֣תְךָ יַֽאֲבֶר־ נֵ֑ץ יִפְרֹ֖שׂ לְתֵימָֽן׃

BAN ²⁷ Bondissant, frémissant, il dévore le sol,
Il ne se contient plus quand résonne la trompette.

KJV ²⁷ Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

WLC ²⁷ אִם־ עַל־ פִּ֭יךָ יַגְבִּ֣יהַּ נָ֑שֶׁר וְ֝כִ֗י יָרִ֥ים קִנּֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁸ A, l'ouïe de la trompette, il dit : Hourra !
De loin il flaire la guerre,
Les cris des chefs et le tumulte.

KJV ²⁸ She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.

WLC ²⁸ סֶ֣לַע יִ֭שְׁכֹּן וְיִתְלֹנָ֑ן עַֽל־ שֶׁן־ סֶ֝֗לַע וּמְצוּדָֽה׃

BAN ²⁹ Est-ce grâce à ton intelligence que l'épervier prend son vol,
Et qu'il déploie ses ailes vers le sud ?

KJV ²⁹ From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.

WLC ²⁹ מִשָּׁ֥ם חָֽפַר־ אֹ֑כֶל לְ֝מֵרָח֗וֹק עֵינָ֥יו יַבִּֽיטוּ׃

BAN ³⁰ Est-ce à ton commandement que l'aigle s'élève,
Et qu'il place si haut son nid ?

KJV ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

WLC ³⁰ יְעַלְעוּ־ דָ֑ם וּבַאֲשֶׁ֥ר חֲ֝לָלִ֗ים שָׁ֣ם הֽוּא׃

BAN ³¹ Il habite et niche dans les rochers,
Sur les dents des rochers et les lieux forts.

BAN ³² De là il épie sa nourriture,
Ses yeux l'aperçoivent de loin.

BAN ³³ Ses petits [déjà] se gorgent de sang ;
Là où il y a des tués, il s'y trouve.

BAN ³⁴ L'Eternel répondit à Job et dit :

BAN ³⁵ Le censeur disputera-t-il avec le Puissant ?
Que celui qui fait la leçon à Dieu réponde !

BAN ³⁶ Job répondit à l'Eternel et dit :

BAN ³⁷ Ah ! je suis trop peu de chose ! que te répondrai-je ?
J'ai mis la main sur ma bouche.

BAN ³⁸ J'ai parlé une fois, et je ne répliquerai plus,
Deux fois, et je ne continuerai pas.

KJV ³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

WLC ³⁹ הֲתָצ֣וּד לְלָבִ֣יא טָ֑רֶף וְחַיַּ֖ת כְּפִירִ֣ים תְּמַלֵּֽא׃

KJV ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

WLC ⁴⁰ כִּי־ יָשֹׁ֥חוּ בַמְּעוֹנ֑וֹת יֵשְׁב֖וּ בַסֻּכָּ֣ה לְמוֹ־ אָֽרֶב׃

KJV ⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

WLC ⁴¹ מִ֤י יָכִ֥ין לָעֹרֵ֗ב צֵ֫יד֥וֹ כִּֽי־ אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יְשַׁוֵּ֑עוּ יִ֝תְע֗וּ לִבְלִי־ אֹֽכֶל׃
