KJV ¹ At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place.

LSG ¹ Mon coeur est tout tremblant, Il bondit hors de sa place.

KJV ² Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.

LSG ² Écoutez, écoutez le frémissement de sa voix, Le grondement qui sort de sa bouche !

KJV ³ He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

LSG ³ Il le fait rouler dans toute l'étendue des cieux, Et son éclair brille jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.

KJV ⁴ After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.

LSG ⁴ Puis éclate un rugissement: il tonne de sa voix majestueuse ; Il ne retient plus l'éclair, dès que sa voix retentit.

KJV ⁵ God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

LSG ⁵ Dieu tonne avec sa voix d'une manière merveilleuse ; Il fait de grandes choses que nous ne comprenons pas.

KJV ⁶ For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

LSG ⁶ Il dit à la neige: Tombe sur la terre ! Il le dit à la pluie, même aux plus fortes pluies.

KJV ⁷ He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

LSG ⁷ Il met un sceau sur la main de tous les hommes, Afin que tous se reconnaissent comme ses créatures.

KJV ⁸ Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.

LSG ⁸ L'animal sauvage se retire dans une caverne, Et se couche dans sa tanière.

KJV ⁹ Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.

LSG ⁹ L'ouragan vient du midi, Et le froid, des vents du nord.

KJV ¹⁰ By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.

LSG ¹⁰ Par son souffle Dieu produit la glace, Il réduit l'espace où se répandaient les eaux.

KJV ¹¹ Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:

LSG ¹¹ Il charge de vapeurs les nuages, Il les disperse étincelants ;

KJV ¹² And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.

LSG ¹² Leurs évolutions varient selon ses desseins, Pour l'accomplissement de tout ce qu'il leur ordonne, Sur la face de la terre habitée ;

KJV ¹³ He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.

LSG ¹³ C'est comme une verge dont il frappe sa terre, Ou comme un signe de son amour, qu'il les fait apparaître.

KJV ¹⁴ Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

LSG ¹⁴ Job, sois attentif à ces choses ! Considère encore les merveilles de Dieu !

KJV ¹⁵ Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?

LSG ¹⁵ Sais-tu comment Dieu les dirige, Et fait briller son nuage étincelant ?

KJV ¹⁶ Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

LSG ¹⁶ Comprends-tu le balancement des nuées, Les merveilles de celui dont la science est parfaite ?

KJV ¹⁷ How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?

LSG ¹⁷ Sais-tu pourquoi tes vêtements sont chauds Quand la terre se repose par le vent du midi ?

KJV ¹⁸ Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

LSG ¹⁸ Peux-tu comme lui étendre les cieux, Aussi solides qu'un miroir de fonte ?

KJV ¹⁹ Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.

LSG ¹⁹ Fais-nous connaître ce que nous devons lui dire ; Nous sommes trop ignorants pour nous adresser à lui.

KJV ²⁰ Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.

LSG ²⁰ Lui annoncera-t-on que je parlerai ? Mais quel est l'homme qui désire sa perte ?

KJV ²¹ And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

LSG ²¹ On ne peut fixer le soleil qui resplendit dans les cieux, Lorsqu'un vent passe et en ramène la pureté ;

KJV ²² Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.

LSG ²² Le septentrion le rend éclatant comme l'or. Oh ! que la majesté de Dieu est redoutable !

KJV ²³ Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

LSG ²³ Nous ne saurions parvenir jusqu'au Tout Puissant, Grand par la force, Par la justice, par le droit souverain: Il ne répond pas !

KJV ²⁴ Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

LSG ²⁴ C'est pourquoi les hommes doivent le craindre ; Il ne porte les regards sur aucun sage.

KJV ¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

LSG ¹ L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:

KJV ² Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

LSG ² Qui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence ?

KJV ³ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

LSG ³ Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme ; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

KJV ⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

LSG ⁴ Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre ? Dis-le, si tu as de l'intelligence.

KJV ⁵ Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

LSG ⁵ Qui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu ? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau ?

KJV ⁶ Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

LSG ⁶ Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées ? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,

KJV ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

LSG ⁷ Alors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d'allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie ?

KJV ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

LSG ⁸ Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s'élança du sein maternel ;

KJV ⁹ When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

LSG ⁹ Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l'obscurité ses langes ;

KJV ¹⁰ And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

LSG ¹⁰ Quand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes ;

KJV ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

LSG ¹¹ Quand je dis: Tu viendras jusqu'ici, tu n'iras pas au delà ; Ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots ?

KJV ¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

LSG ¹² Depuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin ? As-tu montré sa place à l'aurore,

KJV ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

LSG ¹³ Pour qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués ;

KJV ¹⁴ It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

LSG ¹⁴ Pour que la terre se transforme comme l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu'elle soit parée comme d'un vêtement ;

KJV ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

LSG ¹⁵ Pour que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé ?

KJV ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

LSG ¹⁶ As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources de la mer ? T'es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l'abîme ?

KJV ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

LSG ¹⁷ Les portes de la mort t'ont-elles été ouvertes ? As-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort ?

KJV ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

LSG ¹⁸ As-tu embrassé du regard l'étendue de la terre ? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses.

KJV ¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

LSG ¹⁹ Où est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière ? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure ?

KJV ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

LSG ²⁰ Peux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation ?

KJV ²¹ Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

LSG ²¹ Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand !

KJV ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

LSG ²² Es-tu parvenu jusqu'aux amas de neige ? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle,

KJV ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

LSG ²³ Que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille ?

KJV ²⁴ By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

LSG ²⁴ Par quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d'orient se répand-il sur la terre ?

KJV ²⁵ Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

LSG ²⁵ Qui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l'éclair et du tonnerre,

KJV ²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

LSG ²⁶ Pour que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n'y a point d'hommes ;

KJV ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

LSG ²⁷ Pour qu'elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu'elle fasse germer et sortir l'herbe ?

KJV ²⁸ Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

LSG ²⁸ La pluie a-t-elle un père ? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée ?

KJV ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

LSG ²⁹ Du sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel,

KJV ³⁰ The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

LSG ³⁰ Pour que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l'abîme soit enchaînée ?

KJV ³¹ Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

LSG ³¹ Noues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l'Orion ?

KJV ³² Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

LSG ³² Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits ?

KJV ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

LSG ³³ Connais-tu les lois du ciel ? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre ?

KJV ³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

LSG ³⁴ Élèves-tu la voix jusqu'aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d'eaux ?

KJV ³⁵ Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

LSG ³⁵ Lances-tu les éclairs ? Partent-ils ? Te disent-ils: Nous voici ?

KJV ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

LSG ³⁶ Qui a mis la sagesse dans le coeur, Ou qui a donné l'intelligence à l'esprit ?

KJV ³⁷ Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

LSG ³⁷ Qui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux,

KJV ³⁸ When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

LSG ³⁸ Pour que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble ?

KJV ³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

LSG ³⁹ (39:1) Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne, Et apaises-tu la faim des lionceaux,

KJV ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

LSG ⁴⁰ (39:2) Quand ils sont couchés dans leur tanière, Quand ils sont en embuscade dans leur repaire ?

KJV ⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

LSG ⁴¹ (39:3) Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, Quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, Quand ils sont errants et affamés ?

KJV ¹ Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

LSG ¹ (39:4) Sais-tu quand les chèvres sauvages font leurs petits ? Observes-tu les biches quand elles mettent bas ?

KJV ² Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

LSG ² (39:5) Comptes-tu les mois pendant lesquels elles portent, Et connais-tu l'époque où elles enfantent ?

KJV ³ They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

LSG ³ (39:6) Elles se courbent, laissent échapper leur progéniture, Et sont délivrées de leurs douleurs.

KJV ⁴ Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

LSG ⁴ (39:7) Leurs petits prennent de la vigueur et grandissent en plein air, Ils s'éloignent et ne reviennent plus auprès d'elles.

KJV ⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

LSG ⁵ (39:8) Qui met en liberté l'âne sauvage, Et l'affranchit de tout lien ?

KJV ⁶ Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.

LSG ⁶ (39:9) J'ai fait du désert son habitation, De la terre salée sa demeure.

KJV ⁷ He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.

LSG ⁷ (39:10) Il se rit du tumulte des villes, Il n'entend pas les cris d'un maître.

KJV ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

LSG ⁸ (39:11) Il parcourt les montagnes pour trouver sa pâture, Il est à la recherche de tout ce qui est vert.

KJV ⁹ Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

LSG ⁹ (39:12) Le buffle veut-il être à ton service ? Passe-t-il la nuit vers ta crèche ?

KJV ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

LSG ¹⁰ (39:13) L'attaches-tu par une corde pour qu'il trace un sillon ? Va-t-il après toi briser les mottes des vallées ?

KJV ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

LSG ¹¹ (39:14) Te reposes-tu sur lui, parce que sa force est grande ? Lui abandonnes-tu le soin de tes travaux ?

KJV ¹² Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?

LSG ¹² (39:15) Te fies-tu à lui pour la rentrée de ta récolte ? Est-ce lui qui doit l'amasser dans ton aire ?

KJV ¹³ Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

LSG ¹³ (39:16) L'aile de l'autruche se déploie joyeuse ; On dirait l'aile, le plumage de la cigogne.

KJV ¹⁴ Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

LSG ¹⁴ (39:17) Mais l'autruche abandonne ses oeufs à la terre, Et les fait chauffer sur la poussière ;

KJV ¹⁵ And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.

LSG ¹⁵ (39:18) Elle oublie que le pied peut les écraser, Qu'une bête des champs peut les fouler.

KJV ¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her's: her labour is in vain without fear;

LSG ¹⁶ (39:19) Elle est dure envers ses petits comme s'ils n'étaient point à elle ; Elle ne s'inquiète pas de l'inutilité de son enfantement.

KJV ¹⁷ Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

LSG ¹⁷ (39:20) Car Dieu lui a refusé la sagesse, Il ne lui a pas donné l'intelligence en partage.

KJV ¹⁸ What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

LSG ¹⁸ (39:21) Quand elle se lève et prend sa course, Elle se rit du cheval et de son cavalier.

KJV ¹⁹ Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?

LSG ¹⁹ (39:22) Est-ce toi qui donnes la vigueur au cheval, Et qui revêts son cou d'une crinière flottante ?

KJV ²⁰ Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.

LSG ²⁰ (39:23) Le fais-tu bondir comme la sauterelle ? Son fier hennissement répand la terreur.

KJV ²¹ He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.

LSG ²¹ (39:24) Il creuse le sol et se réjouit de sa force, Il s'élance au-devant des armes ;

KJV ²² He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

LSG ²² (39:25) Il se rit de la crainte, il n'a pas peur, Il ne recule pas en face de l'épée.

KJV ²³ The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

LSG ²³ (39:26) Sur lui retentit le carquois, Brillent la lance et le javelot.

KJV ²⁴ He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

LSG ²⁴ (39:27) Bouillonnant d'ardeur, il dévore la terre, Il ne peut se contenir au bruit de la trompette.

KJV ²⁵ He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

LSG ²⁵ (39:28) Quand la trompette sonne, il dit: En avant ! Et de loin il flaire la bataille, La voix tonnante des chefs et les cris de guerre.

KJV ²⁶ Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

LSG ²⁶ (39:29) Est-ce par ton intelligence que l'épervier prend son vol, Et qu'il étend ses ailes vers le midi ?

KJV ²⁷ Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

LSG ²⁷ (39:30) Est-ce par ton ordre que l'aigle s'élève, Et qu'il place son nid sur les hauteurs ?

KJV ²⁸ She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.

LSG ²⁸ (39:31) C'est dans les rochers qu'il habite, qu'il a sa demeure, Sur la cime des rochers, sur le sommet des monts.

KJV ²⁹ From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.

LSG ²⁹ (39:32) De là il épie sa proie, Il plonge au loin les regards.

KJV ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

LSG ³⁰ (39:33) Ses petits boivent le sang ; Et là où sont des cadavres, l'aigle se trouve.
