KJV ¹ Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

KJV ² Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

VULC ² Dinumerasti menses conceptus earum,
et scisti tempus partus earum ?

KJV ³ They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

VULC ³ Incurvantur ad fœtum, et pariunt,
et rugitus emittunt.

KJV ⁴ Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

VULC ⁴ Separantur filii earum, et pergunt ad pastum :
egrediuntur, et non revertuntur ad eas.

KJV ⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

VULC ⁵ Quis dimisit onagrum liberum,
et vincula ejus quis solvit ?

KJV ⁶ Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.

VULC ⁶ cui dedi in solitudine domum,
et tabernacula ejus in terra salsuginis.

KJV ⁷ He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.

VULC ⁷ Contemnit multitudinem civitatis :
clamorem exactoris non audit.

KJV ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

VULC ⁸ Circumspicit montes pascuæ suæ,
et virentia quæque perquirit.

KJV ⁹ Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

VULC ⁹ Numquid volet rhinoceros servire tibi,
aut morabitur ad præsepe tuum ?

KJV ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

VULC ¹⁰ Numquid alligabis rhinocerota ad arandum loro tuo,
aut confringet glebas vallium post te ?

KJV ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

VULC ¹¹ Numquid fiduciam habebis in magna fortitudine ejus,
et derelinques ei labores tuos ?

KJV ¹² Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?

VULC ¹² Numquid credes illi quod sementem reddat tibi,
et aream tuam congreget ?

KJV ¹³ Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

VULC ¹³ Penna struthionis similis est
pennis herodii et accipitris.

KJV ¹⁴ Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

VULC ¹⁴ Quando derelinquit ova sua in terra,
tu forsitan in pulvere calefacies ea ?

KJV ¹⁵ And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.

VULC ¹⁵ Obliviscitur quod pes conculcet ea,
aut bestia agri conterat.

KJV ¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her's: her labour is in vain without fear;

VULC ¹⁶ Duratur ad filios suos, quasi non sint sui :
frustra laboravit, nullo timore cogente.

KJV ¹⁷ Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

VULC ¹⁷ Privavit enim eam Deus sapientia,
nec dedit illi intelligentiam.

KJV ¹⁸ What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

VULC ¹⁸ Cum tempus fuerit, in altum alas erigit :
deridet equum et ascensorem ejus.

KJV ¹⁹ Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?

VULC ¹⁹ Numquid præbebis equo fortitudinem,
aut circumdabis collo ejus hinnitum ?

KJV ²⁰ Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.

VULC ²⁰ Numquid suscitabis eum quasi locustas ?
gloria narium ejus terror.

KJV ²¹ He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.

VULC ²¹ Terram ungula fodit ; exsultat audacter :
in occursum pergit armatis.

KJV ²² He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

VULC ²² Contemnit pavorem,
nec cedit gladio.

KJV ²³ The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

VULC ²³ Super ipsum sonabit pharetra ;
vibrabit hasta et clypeus :

KJV ²⁴ He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

VULC ²⁴ fervens et fremens sorbet terram,
nec reputat tubæ sonare clangorem.

KJV ²⁵ He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

VULC ²⁵ Ubi audierit buccinam, dicit : Vah !
procul odoratur bellum :
exhortationem ducum, et ululatum exercitus.

KJV ²⁶ Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

VULC ²⁶ Numquid per sapientiam tuam plumescit accipiter,
expandens alas suas ad austrum ?

KJV ²⁷ Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

VULC ²⁷ Numquid ad præceptum tuum elevabitur aquila,
et in arduis ponet nidum suum ?

KJV ²⁸ She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.

VULC ²⁸ In petris manet,
et in præruptis silicibus commoratur,
atque inaccessis rupibus.

KJV ²⁹ From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.

VULC ²⁹ Inde contemplatur escam,
et de longe oculi ejus prospiciunt.

KJV ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

VULC ³⁰ Pulli ejus lambent sanguinem :
et ubicumque cadaver fuerit, statim adest.]

VULC ³¹ Et adjecit Dominus, et locutus est ad Job :

VULC ³² [Numquid qui contendit cum Deo, tam facile conquiescit ?
utique qui arguit Deum, debet respondere ei.]

VULC ³³ Respondens autem Job Domino, dixit :

VULC ³⁴ [Qui leviter locutus sum, respondere quid possum ?
manum meam ponam super os meum.

VULC ³⁵ Unum locutus sum, quod utinam non dixissem :
et alterum, quibus ultra non addam.]
