BAN ¹ Eliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit :

KJV ¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

VULC ¹ Respondens autem Eliphaz Themanites, dixit :

WLC ¹ וַ֭יַּעַן אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

BAN ² Si l'on se hasarde à t'adresser la parole, seras-tu fâché ?
Mais qui pourrait garder le silence ?

KJV ² If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?

VULC ² [Si cœperimus loqui tibi, forsitan moleste accipies ;
sed conceptum sermonem tenere quis poterit ?

WLC ² הֲנִסָּ֬ה דָבָ֣ר אֵלֶ֣יךָ תִּלְאֶ֑ה וַעְצֹ֥ר בְּ֝מִלִּ֗ין מִ֣י יוּכָֽל׃

BAN ³ Voici, tu en as redressé plusieurs,
Et tu as fortifié les mains débiles ;

KJV ³ Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

VULC ³ Ecce docuisti multos,
et manus lassas roborasti ;

WLC ³ הִ֭נֵּה יִסַּ֣רְתָּ רַבִּ֑ים וְיָדַ֖יִם רָפ֣וֹת תְּחַזֵּֽק׃

BAN ⁴ Tes paroles ont relevé celui qui bronchait,
Tu as affermi les genoux chancelants.

KJV ⁴ Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

VULC ⁴ vacillantes confirmaverunt sermones tui,
et genua trementia confortasti.

WLC ⁴ כּ֭וֹשֵׁל יְקִימ֣וּן מִלֶּ֑יךָ וּבִרְכַּ֖יִם כֹּרְע֣וֹת תְּאַמֵּֽץ׃

BAN ⁵ Mais maintenant que c'est toi qui es atteint, tu es fâché ;
Parce que tu es frappé, tu es éperdu !

KJV ⁵ But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

VULC ⁵ Nunc autem venit super te plaga, et defecisti ;
tetigit te, et conturbatus es.

WLC ⁵ כִּ֤י עַתָּ֨ה ׀ תָּב֣וֹא אֵלֶ֣יךָ וַתֵּ֑לֶא תִּגַּ֥ע עָ֝דֶ֗יךָ וַתִּבָּהֵֽל׃

BAN ⁶ Ta piété n'est-elle pas ta force,
Et l'intégrité de tes voies, ta confiance ?

KJV ⁶ Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

VULC ⁶ Ubi est timor tuus, fortitudo tua,
patientia tua, et perfectio viarum tuarum ?

WLC ⁶ הֲלֹ֣א יִ֭רְאָתְךָ כִּסְלָתֶ֑ךָ תִּ֝קְוָתְךָ֗ וְתֹ֣ם דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃

BAN ⁷ Rappelle-toi si jamais innocent a péri ;
Si quelque part les hommes droits ont été détruits.

KJV ⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

VULC ⁷ Recordare, obsecro te, quis umquam innocens periit ?
aut quando recti deleti sunt ?

WLC ⁷ זְכָר־ נָ֗א מִ֤י ה֣וּא נָקִ֣י אָבָ֑ד וְ֝אֵיפֹ֗ה יְשָׁרִ֥ים נִכְחָֽדוּ׃

BAN ⁸ A ce que j'ai vu, ceux qui labourent l'iniquité
Et qui sèment le malheur, le récoltent.

KJV ⁸ Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

VULC ⁸ Quin potius vidi eos qui operantur iniquitatem,
et seminant dolores, et metunt eos,

WLC ⁸ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר רָ֭אִיתִי חֹ֣רְשֵׁי אָ֑וֶן וְזֹרְעֵ֖י עָמָ֣ל יִקְצְרֻֽהוּ׃

BAN ⁹ Au souffle de Dieu, ils périssent ;
Ils sont consumés par le vent de sa colère.

KJV ⁹ By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

VULC ⁹ flante Deo perisse,
et spiritu iræ ejus esse consumptos.

WLC ⁹ מִנִּשְׁמַ֣ת אֱל֣וֹהַ יֹאבֵ֑דוּ וּמֵר֖וּחַ אַפּ֣וֹ יִכְלֽוּ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Les rugissements du lion, les grondements de sa voix sont étouffés ;
Les dents des lionceaux sont arrachées.

KJV ¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

VULC ¹⁰ Rugitus leonis, et vox leænæ,
et dentes catulorum leonum contriti sunt.

WLC ¹⁰ שַׁאֲגַ֣ת אַ֭רְיֵה וְק֣וֹל שָׁ֑חַל וְשִׁנֵּ֖י כְפִירִ֣ים נִתָּֽעוּ׃

BAN ¹¹ Le lion périt, faute de proie,
Et les petits de la lionne sont dispersés.

KJV ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

VULC ¹¹ Tigris periit, eo quod non haberet prædam,
et catuli leonis dissipati sunt.

WLC ¹¹ לַ֭יִשׁ אֹבֵ֣ד מִבְּלִי־ טָ֑רֶף וּבְנֵ֥י לָ֝בִ֗יא יִתְפָּרָֽדוּ׃

BAN ¹² Une parole s'est glissée jusqu'à moi,
Et mon oreille en a perçu le murmure,

KJV ¹² Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

VULC ¹² Porro ad me dictum est verbum absconditum,
et quasi furtive suscepit auris mea venas susurri ejus.

WLC ¹² וְ֭אֵלַי דָּבָ֣ר יְגֻנָּ֑ב וַתִּקַּ֥ח אָ֝זְנִ֗י שֵׁ֣מֶץ מֶֽנְהֽוּ׃

BAN ¹³ Comme j'étais livré aux pensées qu'inspirent les visions de la nuit,
A l'heure où un profond sommeil s'abat sur les hommes.

KJV ¹³ In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

VULC ¹³ In horrore visionis nocturnæ,
quando solet sopor occupare homines,

WLC ¹³ בִּ֭שְׂעִפִּים מֵחֶזְיֹנ֣וֹת לָ֑יְלָה בִּנְפֹ֥ל תַּ֝רְדֵּמָ֗ה עַל־ אֲנָשִֽׁים׃

BAN ¹⁴ Une frayeur me surprit avec un tremblement,
Et secoua tous mes os.

KJV ¹⁴ Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

VULC ¹⁴ pavor tenuit me, et tremor,
et omnia ossa mea perterrita sunt ;

WLC ¹⁴ פַּ֣חַד קְ֭רָאַנִי וּרְעָדָ֑ה וְרֹ֖ב עַצְמוֹתַ֣י הִפְחִֽיד׃

BAN ¹⁵ Un souffle passa sur mon visage,
Les poils de ma chair se dressèrent.

KJV ¹⁵ Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

VULC ¹⁵ et cum spiritus, me præsente, transiret,
inhorruerunt pili carnis meæ.

WLC ¹⁵ וְ֭רוּחַ עַל־ פָּנַ֣י יַחֲלֹ֑ף תְּ֝סַמֵּ֗ר שַֽׂעֲרַ֥ת בְּשָׂרִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁶ Un être était là, dont je ne reconnaissais pas les traits ;
Une figure, devant mes yeux.
J'entendis un murmure, puis une voix :

KJV ¹⁶ It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

VULC ¹⁶ Stetit quidam, cujus non agnoscebam vultum,
imago coram oculis meis,
et vocem quasi auræ lenis audivi.

WLC ¹⁶ יַעֲמֹ֤ד ׀ וְֽלֹא־ אַכִּ֬יר מַרְאֵ֗הוּ תְּ֭מוּנָה לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָ֑י דְּמָמָ֖ה וָק֣וֹל אֶשְׁמָֽע׃

BAN ¹⁷ Le mortel serait-il juste devant Dieu ?
L'homme sera-t-il pur devant son Créateur ?

KJV ¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

VULC ¹⁷ Numquid homo, Dei comparatione, justificabitur ?
aut factore suo purior erit vir ?

WLC ¹⁷ הַֽ֭אֱנוֹשׁ מֵאֱל֣וֹהַ יִצְדָּ֑ק אִ֥ם מֵ֝עֹשֵׂ֗הוּ יִטְהַר־ גָּֽבֶר׃

BAN ¹⁸ Voici, il ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs,
Et dans ses anges il trouve du péché !

KJV ¹⁸ Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

VULC ¹⁸ Ecce qui serviunt ei, non sunt stabiles,
et in angelis suis reperit pravitatem ;

WLC ¹⁸ הֵ֣ן בַּ֭עֲבָדָיו לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וּ֝בְמַלְאָכָ֗יו יָשִׂ֥ים תָּהֳלָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁹ Que sera-ce donc de ceux qui habitent des maisons d'argile, fondées sur la poussière,
Et qu'on écrase comme la teigne !

KJV ¹⁹ How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

VULC ¹⁹ quanto magis hi qui habitant domos luteas,
qui terrenum habent fundamentum,
consumentur velut a tinea ?

WLC ¹⁹ אַ֤ף ׀ שֹׁכְנֵ֬י בָֽתֵּי־ חֹ֗מֶר אֲשֶׁר־ בֶּעָפָ֥ר יְסוֹדָ֑ם יְ֝דַכְּא֗וּם לִפְנֵי־ עָֽשׁ׃

BAN ²⁰ Entre le matin et le soir ils sont détruits ;
Sans qu'on y prenne garde, ils périssent à toujours.

KJV ²⁰ They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

VULC ²⁰ De mane usque ad vesperam succidentur ;
et quia nullus intelligit, in æternum peribunt.

WLC ²⁰ מִבֹּ֣קֶר לָעֶ֣רֶב יֻכַּ֑תּוּ מִבְּלִ֥י מֵ֝שִׂ֗ים לָנֶ֥צַח יֹאבֵֽדוּ׃

BAN ²¹ Leur corde n'est-elle pas arrachée ?
Ils meurent sans posséder la sagesse.

KJV ²¹ Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

VULC ²¹ Qui autem reliqui fuerint, auferentur ex eis ;
morientur, et non in sapientia.]

WLC ²¹ הֲלֹא־ נִסַּ֣ע יִתְרָ֣ם בָּ֑ם יָ֝מ֗וּתוּ וְלֹ֣א בְחָכְמָֽה׃
