KJV ² Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

LSG ² (39:35) Celui qui dispute contre le Tout Puissant est-il convaincu ? Celui qui conteste avec Dieu a-t-il une réplique à faire ?

WLC ² הֲ֭רֹב עִם־ שַׁדַּ֣י יִסּ֑וֹר מוֹכִ֖יחַ אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַעֲנֶֽנָּה׃

KJV ³ Then Job answered the LORD, and said,

LSG ³ (39:36) Job répondit à l'Éternel et dit:

WLC ³ וַיַּ֖עַן אִיּ֥וֹב אֶת־ יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

LSG ⁴ (39:37) Voici, je suis trop peu de chose ; que te répliquerais-je ? Je mets la main sur ma bouche.

WLC ⁴ הֵ֣ן קַ֭לֹּתִי מָ֣ה אֲשִׁיבֶ֑ךָּ יָ֝דִ֗י שַׂ֣מְתִּי לְמוֹ־ פִֽי׃

KJV ⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

LSG ⁵ (39:38) J'ai parlé une fois, je ne répondrai plus ; Deux fois, je n'ajouterai rien.

WLC ⁵ אַחַ֣ת דִּ֭בַּרְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה וּ֝שְׁתַּ֗יִם וְלֹ֣א אוֹסִֽיף׃

KJV ⁶ Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

LSG ⁶ (40:1) L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:

WLC ⁶ וַיַּֽעַן־ יְהוָ֣ה אֶת־ אִ֭יּוֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ⁷ Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

LSG ⁷ (40:2) Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme ; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

WLC ⁷ אֱזָר־ נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃

KJV ⁸ Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?

LSG ⁸ (40:3) Anéantiras-tu jusqu'à ma justice ? Me condamneras-tu pour te donner droit ?

WLC ⁸ הַ֭אַף תָּפֵ֣ר מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י תַּ֝רְשִׁיעֵ֗נִי לְמַ֣עַן תִּצְדָּֽק׃

KJV ⁹ Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

LSG ⁹ (40:4) As-tu un bras comme celui de Dieu, Une voix tonnante comme la sienne ?

WLC ⁹ וְאִם־ זְר֖וֹעַ כָּאֵ֥ל ׀ לָ֑ךְ וּ֝בְק֗וֹל כָּמֹ֥הוּ תַרְעֵֽם׃

KJV ¹⁰ Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

LSG ¹⁰ (40:5) Orne-toi de magnificence et de grandeur, Revêts-toi de splendeur et de gloire !

WLC ¹⁰ עֲדֵ֥ה נָ֣א גָֽא֣וֹן וָגֹ֑בַהּ וְה֖וֹד וְהָדָ֣ר תִּלְבָּֽשׁ׃

KJV ¹¹ Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.

LSG ¹¹ (40:6) Répands les flots de ta colère, Et d'un regard abaisse les hautains !

WLC ¹¹ הָ֭פֵץ עֶבְר֣וֹת אַפֶּ֑ךָ וּרְאֵ֥ה כָל־ גֵּ֝אֶ֗ה וְהַשְׁפִּילֵֽהוּ׃

KJV ¹² Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

LSG ¹² (40:7) D'un regard humilie les hautains, Écrase sur place les méchants,

WLC ¹² רְאֵ֣ה כָל־ גֵּ֭אֶה הַכְנִיעֵ֑הוּ וַהֲדֹ֖ךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם׃

KJV ¹³ Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.

LSG ¹³ (40:8) Cache-les tous ensemble dans la poussière, Enferme leur front dans les ténèbres !

WLC ¹³ טָמְנֵ֣ם בֶּעָפָ֣ר יָ֑חַד פְּ֝נֵיהֶ֗ם חֲבֹ֣שׁ בַּטָּמֽוּן׃

KJV ¹⁴ Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

LSG ¹⁴ (40:9) Alors je rends hommage A la puissance de ta droite.

WLC ¹⁴ וְגַם־ אֲנִ֥י אוֹדֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־ תוֹשִׁ֖עַ לְךָ֣ יְמִינֶֽךָ׃

KJV ¹⁵ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

LSG ¹⁵ (40:10) Voici l'hippopotame, à qui j'ai donné la vie comme à toi ! Il mange de l'herbe comme le boeuf.

WLC ¹⁵ הִנֵּה־ נָ֣א בְ֭הֵמוֹת אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂ֣יתִי עִמָּ֑ךְ חָ֝צִ֗יר כַּבָּקָ֥ר יֹאכֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁶ Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

LSG ¹⁶ (40:11) Le voici ! Sa force est dans ses reins, Et sa vigueur dans les muscles de son ventre ;

WLC ¹⁶ הִנֵּה־ נָ֣א כֹח֣וֹ בְמָתְנָ֑יו וְ֝אֹנ֗וֹ בִּשְׁרִירֵ֥י בִטְנֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁷ He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

LSG ¹⁷ (40:12) Il plie sa queue aussi ferme qu'un cèdre ; Les nerfs de ses cuisses sont entrelacés ;

WLC ¹⁷ יַחְפֹּ֣ץ זְנָב֣וֹ כְמוֹ־ אָ֑רֶז גִּידֵ֖י יְשֹׂרָֽגוּ׃

KJV ¹⁸ His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.

LSG ¹⁸ (40:13) Ses os sont des tubes d'airain, Ses membres sont comme des barres de fer.

WLC ¹⁸ עֲ֭צָמָיו אֲפִיקֵ֣י נְחוּשָׁ֑ה גְּ֝רָמָ֗יו כִּמְטִ֥יל בַּרְזֶֽל׃

KJV ¹⁹ He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.

LSG ¹⁹ (40:14) Il est la première des oeuvres de Dieu ; Celui qui l'a fait l'a pourvu d'un glaive.

WLC ¹⁹ ה֭וּא רֵאשִׁ֣ית דַּרְכֵי־ אֵ֑ל הָ֝עֹשׂוֹ יַגֵּ֥שׁ חַרְבּֽוֹ׃

KJV ²⁰ Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

LSG ²⁰ (40:15) Il trouve sa pâture dans les montagnes, Où se jouent toutes les bêtes des champs.

WLC ²⁰ כִּֽי־ ב֭וּל הָרִ֣ים יִשְׂאוּ־ ל֑וֹ וְֽכָל־ חַיַּ֥ת הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה יְשַֽׂחֲקוּ־ שָֽׁם׃

KJV ²¹ He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

LSG ²¹ (40:16) Il se couche sous les lotus, Au milieu des roseaux et des marécages ;

WLC ²¹ תַּֽחַת־ צֶאֱלִ֥ים יִשְׁכָּ֑ב בְּסֵ֖תֶר קָנֶ֣ה וּבִצָּֽה׃

KJV ²² The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

LSG ²² (40:17) Les lotus le couvrent de leur ombre, Les saules du torrent l'environnent.

WLC ²² יְסֻכֻּ֣הוּ צֶאֱלִ֣ים צִֽלֲל֑וֹ יְ֝סֻבּ֗וּהוּ עַרְבֵי־ נָֽחַל׃

KJV ²³ Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.

LSG ²³ (40:18) Que le fleuve vienne à déborder, il ne s'enfuit pas: Que le Jourdain se précipite dans sa gueule, il reste calme.

WLC ²³ הֵ֤ן יַעֲשֹׁ֣ק נָ֭הָר לֹ֣א יַחְפּ֑וֹז יִבְטַ֓ח ׀ כִּֽי־ יָגִ֖יחַ יַרְדֵּ֣ן אֶל־ פִּֽיהוּ׃

KJV ²⁴ He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.

LSG ²⁴ (40:19) Est-ce à force ouverte qu'on pourra le saisir ? Est-ce au moyen de filets qu'on lui percera le nez ?

WLC ²⁴ בְּעֵינָ֥יו יִקָּחֶ֑נּוּ בְּ֝מֽוֹקְשִׁ֗ים יִנְקָב־ אָֽף׃

KJV ¹ Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?

LSG ¹ (40:20) Prendras-tu le crocodile à l'hameçon ? Saisiras-tu sa langue avec une corde ?

WLC ¹ הֵן־ תֹּחַלְתּ֥וֹ נִכְזָ֑בָה הֲגַ֖ם אֶל־ מַרְאָ֣יו יֻטָֽל׃

KJV ² Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?

LSG ² (40:21) Mettras-tu un jonc dans ses narines ? Lui perceras-tu la mâchoire avec un crochet ?

WLC ² לֹֽא־ אַ֭כְזָר כִּ֣י יְעוּרֶ֑נּוּ וּמִ֥י ה֝֗וּא לְפָנַ֥י יִתְיַצָּֽב׃

KJV ³ Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?

LSG ³ (40:22) Te pressera-t-il de supplication ? Te parlera-t-il d'une voix douce ?

WLC ³ מִ֣י הִ֭קְדִּימַנִי וַאֲשַׁלֵּ֑ם תַּ֖חַת כָּל־ הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם לִי־ הֽוּא׃

KJV ⁴ Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?

LSG ⁴ (40:23) Fera-t-il une alliance avec toi, Pour devenir à toujours ton esclave ?

WLC ⁴ אַחֲרִ֥ישׁ בַּדָּ֑יו וּדְבַר־ גְּ֝בוּר֗וֹת וְחִ֣ין עֶרְכּֽוֹ׃

KJV ⁵ Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

LSG ⁵ (40:24) Joueras-tu avec lui comme avec un oiseau ? L'attacheras-tu pour amuser tes jeunes filles ?

WLC ⁵ מִֽי־ גִ֭לָּה פְּנֵ֣י לְבוּשׁ֑וֹ בְּכֶ֥פֶל רִ֝סְנ֗וֹ מִ֣י יָבֽוֹא׃

KJV ⁶ Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?

LSG ⁶ (40:25) Les pêcheurs en trafiquent-ils ? Le partagent-ils entre les marchands ?

WLC ⁶ דַּלְתֵ֣י פָ֭נָיו מִ֣י פִתֵּ֑חַ סְבִיב֖וֹת שִׁנָּ֣יו אֵימָֽה׃

KJV ⁷ Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?

LSG ⁷ (40:26) Couvriras-tu sa peau de dards, Et sa tête de harpons ?

WLC ⁷ גַּ֭אֲוָה אֲפִיקֵ֣י מָֽגִנִּ֑ים סָ֝ג֗וּר חוֹתָ֥ם צָֽר׃

KJV ⁸ Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.

LSG ⁸ (40:27) Dresse ta main contre lui, Et tu ne t'aviseras plus de l'attaquer.

WLC ⁸ אֶחָ֣ד בְּאֶחָ֣ד יִגַּ֑שׁוּ וְ֝ר֗וּחַ לֹא־ יָב֥וֹא בֵֽינֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV ⁹ Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

LSG ⁹ (40:28) Voici, on est trompé dans son attente ; A son seul aspect n'est-on pas terrassé ?

WLC ⁹ אִישׁ־ בְּאָחִ֥יהוּ יְדֻבָּ֑קוּ יִ֝תְלַכְּד֗וּ וְלֹ֣א יִתְפָּרָֽדוּ׃

KJV ¹⁰ None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?

LSG ¹⁰ (41:1) Nul n'est assez hardi pour l'exciter ; Qui donc me résisterait en face ?

WLC ¹⁰ עֲ‍ֽ֭טִישֹׁתָיו תָּ֣הֶל א֑וֹר וְ֝עֵינָ֗יו כְּעַפְעַפֵּי־ שָֽׁחַר׃

KJV ¹¹ Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

LSG ¹¹ (41:2) De qui suis-je le débiteur ? Je le paierai. Sous le ciel tout m'appartient.

WLC ¹¹ מִ֭פִּיו לַפִּידִ֣ים יַהֲלֹ֑כוּ כִּיד֥וֹדֵי אֵ֝֗שׁ יִתְמַלָּֽטוּ׃

KJV ¹² I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.

LSG ¹² (41:3) Je veux encore parler de ses membres, Et de sa force, et de la beauté de sa structure.

WLC ¹² מִ֭נְּחִירָיו יֵצֵ֣א עָשָׁ֑ן כְּד֖וּד נָפ֣וּחַ וְאַגְמֹֽן׃

KJV ¹³ Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?

LSG ¹³ (41:4) Qui soulèvera son vêtement ? Qui pénétrera entre ses mâchoires ?

WLC ¹³ נַ֭פְשׁוֹ גֶּחָלִ֣ים תְּלַהֵ֑ט וְ֝לַ֗הַב מִפִּ֥יו יֵצֵֽא׃

KJV ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.

LSG ¹⁴ (41:5) Qui ouvrira les portes de sa gueule ? Autour de ses dents habite la terreur.

WLC ¹⁴ בְּֽ֭צַוָּארוֹ יָלִ֣ין עֹ֑ז וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו תָּד֥וּץ דְּאָבָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁵ His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

LSG ¹⁵ (41:6) Ses magnifiques et puissants boucliers Sont unis ensemble comme par un sceau ;

WLC ¹⁵ מַפְּלֵ֣י בְשָׂר֣וֹ דָבֵ֑קוּ יָצ֥וּק עָ֝לָ֗יו בַּל־ יִמּֽוֹט׃

KJV ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

LSG ¹⁶ (41:7) Ils se serrent l'un contre l'autre, Et l'air ne passerait pas entre eux ;

WLC ¹⁶ לִ֭בּוֹ יָצ֣וּק כְּמוֹ־ אָ֑בֶן וְ֝יָצ֗וּק כְּפֶ֣לַח תַּחְתִּֽית׃

KJV ¹⁷ They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

LSG ¹⁷ (41:8) Ce sont des frères qui s'embrassent, Se saisissent, demeurent inséparables.

WLC ¹⁷ מִ֭שֵּׂתוֹ יָג֣וּרוּ אֵלִ֑ים מִ֝שְּׁבָרִ֗ים יִתְחַטָּֽאוּ׃

KJV ¹⁸ By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

LSG ¹⁸ (41:9) Ses éternuements font briller la lumière ; Ses yeux sont comme les paupières de l'aurore.

WLC ¹⁸ מַשִּׂיגֵ֣הוּ חֶ֭רֶב בְּלִ֣י תָק֑וּם חֲנִ֖ית מַסָּ֣ע וְשִׁרְיָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.

LSG ¹⁹ (41:10) Des flammes jaillissent de sa bouche, Des étincelles de feu s'en échappent.

WLC ¹⁹ יַחְשֹׁ֣ב לְתֶ֣בֶן בַּרְזֶ֑ל לְעֵ֖ץ רִקָּב֣וֹן נְחוּשָֽׁה׃

KJV ²⁰ Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.

LSG ²⁰ (41:11) Une fumée sort de ses narines, Comme d'un vase qui bout, d'une chaudière ardente.

WLC ²⁰ לֹֽא־ יַבְרִיחֶ֥נּוּ בֶן־ קָ֑שֶׁת לְ֝קַ֗שׁ נֶהְפְּכוּ־ ל֥וֹ אַבְנֵי־ קָֽלַע׃

KJV ²¹ His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.

LSG ²¹ (41:12) Son souffle allume les charbons, Sa gueule lance la flamme.

WLC ²¹ כְּ֭קַשׁ נֶחְשְׁב֣וּ תוֹתָ֑ח וְ֝יִשְׂחַ֗ק לְרַ֣עַשׁ כִּידֽוֹן׃

KJV ²² In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.

LSG ²² (41:13) La force a son cou pour demeure, Et l'effroi bondit au-devant de lui.

WLC ²² תַּ֭חְתָּיו חַדּ֣וּדֵי חָ֑רֶשׂ יִרְפַּ֖ד חָר֣וּץ עֲלֵי־ טִֽיט׃

KJV ²³ The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.

LSG ²³ (41:14) Ses parties charnues tiennent ensemble, Fondues sur lui, inébranlables.

WLC ²³ יַרְתִּ֣יחַ כַּסִּ֣יר מְצוּלָ֑ה יָ֝֗ם יָשִׂ֥ים כַּמֶּרְקָחָֽה׃

KJV ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.

LSG ²⁴ (41:15) Son coeur est dur comme la pierre, Dur comme la meule inférieure.

WLC ²⁴ אַ֭חֲרָיו יָאִ֣יר נָתִ֑יב יַחְשֹׁ֖ב תְּה֣וֹם לְשֵׂיבָֽה׃

KJV ²⁵ When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.

LSG ²⁵ (41:16) Quand il se lève, les plus vaillants ont peur, Et l'épouvante les fait fuir.

WLC ²⁵ אֵֽין־ עַל־ עָפָ֥ר מָשְׁל֑וֹ הֶ֝עָשׂ֗וּ לִבְלִי־ חָֽת׃

KJV ²⁶ The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.

LSG ²⁶ (41:17) C'est en vain qu'on l'attaque avec l'épée ; La lance, le javelot, la cuirasse, ne servent à rien.

WLC ²⁶ אֵֽת־ כָּל־ גָּבֹ֥הַּ יִרְאֶ֑ה ה֝֗וּא מֶ֣לֶךְ עַל־ כָּל־ בְּנֵי־ שָֽׁחַץ׃

KJV ²⁷ He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.

LSG ²⁷ (41:18) Il regarde le fer comme de la paille, L'airain comme du bois pourri.

KJV ²⁸ The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.

LSG ²⁸ (41:19) La flèche ne le met pas en fuite, Les pierres de la fronde sont pour lui du chaume.

KJV ²⁹ Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.

LSG ²⁹ (41:20) Il ne voit dans la massue qu'un brin de paille, Il rit au sifflement des dards.

KJV ³⁰ Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.

LSG ³⁰ (41:21) Sous son ventre sont des pointes aiguës: On dirait une herse qu'il étend sur le limon.

KJV ³¹ He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.

LSG ³¹ (41:22) Il fait bouillir le fond de la mer comme une chaudière, Il l'agite comme un vase rempli de parfums.

KJV ³² He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.

LSG ³² (41:23) Il laisse après lui un sentier lumineux ; L'abîme prend la chevelure d'un vieillard.

KJV ³³ Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.

LSG ³³ (41:24) Sur la terre nul n'est son maître ; Il a été créé pour ne rien craindre.

KJV ³⁴ He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

LSG ³⁴ (41:25) Il regarde avec dédain tout ce qui est élevé, Il est le roi des plus fiers animaux.

WLC ²⁵ תִּמְשֹׁ֣ךְ לִוְיָתָ֣ן בְּחַכָּ֑ה וּ֝בְחֶ֗בֶל תַּשְׁקִ֥יעַ לְשֹׁנֽוֹ׃

WLC ²⁶ הֲתָשִׂ֣ים אַגְמ֣וֹן בְּאַפּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְח֗וֹחַ תִּקּ֥וֹב לֶֽחֱיוֹ׃

WLC ²⁷ הֲיַרְבֶּ֣ה אֵ֭לֶיךָ תַּחֲנוּנִ֑ים אִם־ יְדַבֵּ֖ר אֵלֶ֣יךָ רַכּֽוֹת׃

WLC ²⁸ הֲיִכְרֹ֣ת בְּרִ֣ית עִמָּ֑ךְ תִּ֝קָּחֶ֗נּוּ לְעֶ֣בֶד עוֹלָֽם׃

WLC ²⁹ הַֽתְשַׂחֶק־ בּ֭וֹ כַּצִּפּ֑וֹר וְ֝תִקְשְׁרֶ֗נּוּ לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃

WLC ³⁰ יִכְר֣וּ עָ֭לָיו חַבָּרִ֑ים יֶ֝חֱצ֗וּהוּ בֵּ֣ין כְּֽנַעֲנִֽים׃

WLC ³¹ הַֽתְמַלֵּ֣א בְשֻׂכּ֣וֹת עוֹר֑וֹ וּבְצִלְצַ֖ל דָּגִ֣ים רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

WLC ³² שִׂים־ עָלָ֥יו כַּפֶּ֑ךָ זְכֹ֥ר מִ֝לְחָמָ֗ה אַל־ תּוֹסַֽף׃
