KJV ¹ Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

WLC ¹ קְֽרָא־ נָ֭א הֲיֵ֣שׁ עוֹנֶ֑ךָּ וְאֶל־ מִ֖י מִקְּדֹשִׁ֣ים תִּפְנֶֽה׃

BAN ² Car le dépit tue l'insensé,
L'irritation fait mourir l'ignorant.

KJV ² For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

WLC ² כִּֽי־ לֶֽ֭אֱוִיל יַהֲרָג־ כָּ֑עַשׂ וּ֝פֹתֶ֗ה תָּמִ֥ית קִנְאָֽה׃

BAN ³ J'ai vu un insensé étendre au loin ses racines,
Et soudain j'ai vu sa maison maudite.

KJV ³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

WLC ³ אֲ‍ֽנִי־ רָ֭אִיתִי אֱוִ֣יל מַשְׁרִ֑ישׁ וָאֶקּ֖וֹב נָוֵ֣הוּ פִתְאֹֽם׃

BAN ⁴ Ses fils sont éloignés du salut,
On les foule au tribunal et personne ne les délivre.

KJV ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

WLC ⁴ יִרְחֲק֣וּ בָנָ֣יו מִיֶּ֑שַׁע וְיִֽדַּכְּא֥וּ בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר וְאֵ֣ין מַצִּֽיל׃

BAN ⁵ Sa récolte, un affamé la mange,
Il la prend même entre les épines,
Et le filet guette ses biens.

KJV ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

WLC ⁵ אֲשֶׁ֤ר קְצִיר֨וֹ ׀ רָ֘עֵ֤ב יֹאכֵ֗ל וְאֶֽל־ מִצִּנִּ֥ים יִקָּחֵ֑הוּ וְשָׁאַ֖ף צַמִּ֣ים חֵילָֽם׃

BAN ⁶ Car le malheur ne sort pas de la poussière,
Et la souffrance ne germe pas de la terre ;

KJV ⁶ Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

WLC ⁶ כִּ֤י ׀ לֹא־ יֵצֵ֣א מֵעָפָ֣ר אָ֑וֶן וּ֝מֵאֲדָמָ֗ה לֹא־ יִצְמַ֥ח עָמָֽל׃

BAN ⁷ Mais l'homme naît pour la souffrance,
Comme l'étincelle pour s'élever en l'air.

KJV ⁷ Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

WLC ⁷ כִּֽי־ אָ֭דָם לְעָמָ֣ל יוּלָּ֑ד וּבְנֵי־ רֶ֝֗שֶׁף יַגְבִּ֥יהוּ עֽוּף׃

BAN ⁸ Pour moi, je m'adresserais au Tout-Puissant ;
J'exposerais ma cause à Dieu :

KJV ⁸ I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

WLC ⁸ אוּלָ֗ם אֲ֭נִי אֶדְרֹ֣שׁ אֶל־ אֵ֑ל וְאֶל־ אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים אָשִׂ֥ים דִּבְרָתִֽי׃

BAN ⁹ Il fait des choses grandes, insondables ;
Des merveilles qu'on ne saurait compter ;

KJV ⁹ Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

WLC ⁹ עֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֭דֹלוֹת וְאֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר נִ֝פְלָא֗וֹת עַד־ אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃

BAN ¹⁰ Il répand la pluie sur la terre,
Il envoie les eaux sur la campagne ;

KJV ¹⁰ Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

WLC ¹⁰ הַנֹּתֵ֣ן מָ֭טָר עַל־ פְּנֵי־ אָ֑רֶץ וְשֹׁ֥לֵֽחַ מַ֝יִם עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י חוּצֽוֹת׃

BAN ¹¹ Il relève, ceux qui sont abaissés,
Et les affligés arrivent à la délivrance.

KJV ¹¹ To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

WLC ¹¹ לָשׂ֣וּם שְׁפָלִ֣ים לְמָר֑וֹם וְ֝קֹדְרִ֗ים שָׂ֣גְבוּ יֶֽשַׁע׃

BAN ¹² Il anéantit les projets des fourbes,
Et leurs mains ne font rien de sensé.

KJV ¹² He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

WLC ¹² מֵ֭פֵר מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת עֲרוּמִ֑ים וְֽלֹא־ תַעֲשֶׂ֥ינָה יְ֝דֵיהֶ֗ם תּוּשִׁיָּֽה׃

BAN ¹³ Il prend les habiles dans leur ruse,
Et le conseil des fourbes est déjoué.

KJV ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

WLC ¹³ לֹכֵ֣ד חֲכָמִ֣ים בְּעָרְמָ֑ם וַעֲצַ֖ת נִפְתָּלִ֣ים נִמְהָֽרָה׃

BAN ¹⁴ De jour ils se heurtent contre les ténèbres,
Ils tâtonnent en plein midi comme de nuit.

KJV ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

WLC ¹⁴ יוֹמָ֥ם יְפַגְּשׁוּ־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ וְ֝כַלַּ֗יְלָה יְֽמַשְׁשׁ֥וּ בַֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃

BAN ¹⁵ Ainsi Dieu délivre le pauvre de l'épée de leur bouche
Et de la main du puissant ;

KJV ¹⁵ But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֣שַׁע מֵ֭חֶרֶב מִפִּיהֶ֑ם וּמִיַּ֖ד חָזָ֣ק אֶבְיֽוֹן׃

BAN ¹⁶ Le faible reprend confiance,
Et l'iniquité a la bouche fermée.

KJV ¹⁶ So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

WLC ¹⁶ וַתְּהִ֣י לַדַּ֣ל תִּקְוָ֑ה וְ֝עֹלָ֗תָה קָ֣פְצָה פִּֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹⁷ Voici, heureux est l'homme que Dieu châtie !
Ne méprise pas la correction du Puissant !

KJV ¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

WLC ¹⁷ הִנֵּ֤ה אַשְׁרֵ֣י אֱ֭נוֹשׁ יוֹכִחֶ֣נּֽוּ אֱל֑וֹהַּ וּמוּסַ֥ר שַׁ֝דַּ֗י אַל־ תִּמְאָֽס׃

BAN ¹⁸ Car il fait la blessure, et il la panse ;
Il frappe et ses mains guérissent.

KJV ¹⁸ For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

WLC ¹⁸ כִּ֤י ה֣וּא יַכְאִ֣יב וְיֶחְבָּ֑שׁ יִ֝מְחַ֗ץ תִּרְפֶּֽינָה׃

BAN ¹⁹ Dans six afflictions il te délivrera,
A la septième encore le mal ne te touchera pas.

KJV ¹⁹ He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

WLC ¹⁹ בְּשֵׁ֣שׁ צָ֭רוֹת יַצִּילֶ֑ךָּ וּבְשֶׁ֓בַע ׀ לֹא־ יִגַּ֖ע בְּךָ֣ רָֽע׃

BAN ²⁰ Dans la famine il te rachètera de la mort ;
Dans la guerre, de la puissance de l'épée.

KJV ²⁰ In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

WLC ²⁰ בְּ֭רָעָב פָּֽדְךָ֣ מִמָּ֑וֶת וּ֝בְמִלְחָמָ֗ה מִ֣ידֵי חָֽרֶב׃

BAN ²¹ Tu seras à l'abri du fouet de la langue,
Tu ne craindras pas la dévastation quand elle arrivera ;

KJV ²¹ Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

WLC ²¹ בְּשׁ֣וֹט לָ֭שׁוֹן תֵּחָבֵ֑א וְֽלֹא־ תִירָ֥א מִ֝שֹּׁ֗ד כִּ֣י יָבֽוֹא׃

BAN ²² Tu te riras de la dévastation et de la disette,
Tu n'auras pas peur des bêtes sauvages.

KJV ²² At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

WLC ²² לְשֹׁ֣ד וּלְכָפָ֣ן תִּשְׂחָ֑ק וּֽמֵחַיַּ֥ת הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ אַל־ תִּירָֽא׃

BAN ²³ Car tu as un pacte avec les pierres des champs,
Et les bêtes des champs sont en paix avec toi.

KJV ²³ For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

WLC ²³ כִּ֤י עִם־ אַבְנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֣ה בְרִיתֶ֑ךָ וְחַיַּ֥ת הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה הָשְׁלְמָה־ לָֽךְ׃

BAN ²⁴ Tu verras ta tente en sûreté ;
Et quand tu visiteras tes pâturages, rien n'y manquera.

KJV ²⁴ And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

WLC ²⁴ וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּי־ שָׁל֣וֹם אָהֳלֶ֑ךָ וּֽפָקַדְתָּ֥ נָ֝וְךָ וְלֹ֣א תֶחֱטָֽא׃

BAN ²⁵ Tu verras ta postérité nombreuse,
Et tes descendants comme l'herbe de la terre ;

KJV ²⁵ Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

WLC ²⁵ וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּי־ רַ֣ב זַרְעֶ֑ךָ וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֶ֗יךָ כְּעֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ²⁶ Tu entreras mûr dans le sépulcre,
Comme une gerbe qu'on enlève en sa saison.

KJV ²⁶ Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

WLC ²⁶ תָּב֣וֹא בְכֶ֣לַח אֱלֵי־ קָ֑בֶר כַּעֲל֖וֹת גָּדִ֣ישׁ בְּעִתּֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁷ Voilà ce que nous avons trouvé dans nos méditations. Il en est ainsi ;
Ecoute-le, et fais-en ton profit !

KJV ²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

WLC ²⁷ הִנֵּה־ זֹ֭את חֲקַרְנ֥וּהָ כֶּֽן־ הִ֑יא שְׁ֝מָעֶ֗נָּה וְאַתָּ֥ה דַֽע־ לָֽךְ׃
