BCC ¹ Alors Job prit la parole et dit :

KJV ¹ But Job answered and said,

WLC ¹ וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

BCC ² Oh ! S'il était possible de peser mon affliction, et de mettre toutes ensemble mes calamités dans la balance !...

KJV ² Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!

WLC ² ל֗וּ שָׁק֣וֹל יִשָּׁקֵ֣ל כַּעְשִׂ֑י בְּֽמֹאזְנַ֥יִם יִשְׂאוּ־ יָֽחַד׃

BCC ³ Elles seraient plus pesantes que le sable de la mer : voilà pourquoi mes paroles vont jusqu'à la folie.

KJV ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

WLC ³ כִּֽי־ עַתָּ֗ה מֵח֣וֹל יַמִּ֣ים יִכְבָּ֑ד עַל־ כֵּ֝֗ן דְּבָרַ֥י לָֽעוּ׃

BCC ⁴ Car les flèches du Tout-Puissant me transpercent, et mon âme en boit le venin ; les terreurs de Dieu sont rangées en bataille contre moi.

KJV ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

WLC ⁴ כִּ֤י חִצֵּ֪י שַׁדַּ֡י עִמָּדִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲ֭מָתָם שֹׁתָ֣ה רוּחִ֑י בִּעוּתֵ֖י אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַֽעַרְכֽוּנִי׃

BCC ⁵ Est-ce que l'onagre rugit auprès de l'herbe tendre ? Est-ce que le boeuf mugit devant sa pâture ?

KJV ⁵ Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?

WLC ⁵ הֲיִֽנְהַק־ פֶּ֥רֶא עֲלֵי־ דֶ֑שֶׁא אִ֥ם יִגְעֶה־ שּׁ֝֗וֹר עַל־ בְּלִילֽוֹ׃

BCC ⁶ Comment se nourrir d'un mets fade et sans sel, ou bien trouver du goût au jus d'une herbe insipide ?

KJV ⁶ Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

WLC ⁶ הֲיֵאָכֵ֣ל תָּ֭פֵל מִבְּלִי־ מֶ֑לַח אִם־ יֶשׁ־ טַ֝֗עַם בְּרִ֣יר חַלָּמֽוּת׃

BCC ⁷ Ce que mon âme se refuse à toucher, c'est là mon pain, tout couvert de souillures.

KJV ⁷ The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.

WLC ⁷ מֵאֲנָ֣ה לִנְגּ֣וֹעַ נַפְשִׁ֑י הֵ֝֗מָּה כִּדְוֵ֥י לַחְמִֽי׃

BCC ⁸ Qui me donnera que mon voeu s'accomplisse, et que Dieu réalise mon attente !

KJV ⁸ Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

WLC ⁸ מִֽי־ יִ֭תֵּן תָּב֣וֹא שֶֽׁאֱלָתִ֑י וְ֝תִקְוָתִ֗י יִתֵּ֥ן אֱלֽוֹהַּ׃

BCC ⁹ Que Dieu daigne me briser, qu'il laisse aller sa main et qu'il tranche mes jours !

KJV ⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

WLC ⁹ וְיֹאֵ֣ל אֱ֭לוֹהַּ וִֽידַכְּאֵ֑נִי יַתֵּ֥ר יָ֝ד֗וֹ וִֽיבַצְּעֵֽנִי׃

BCC ¹⁰ Et qu'il me reste du moins cette consolation, que j'en tressaille dans les maux dont il m'accable : de n'avoir jamais transgressé les commandements du Saint !

KJV ¹⁰ Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

WLC ¹⁰ וּ֥תְהִי ע֨וֹד ׀ נֶ֘חָ֤מָתִ֗י וַאֲסַלְּדָ֣ה בְ֭חִילָה לֹ֣א יַחְמ֑וֹל כִּי־ לֹ֥א כִ֝חַ֗דְתִּי אִמְרֵ֥י קָדֽוֹשׁ׃

BCC ¹¹ Quelle est ma force, pour que j'attende ? Quelle est la durée de mes jours, pour que j'aie patience ?

KJV ¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?

WLC ¹¹ מַה־ כֹּחִ֥י כִֽי־ אֲיַחֵ֑ל וּמַה־ קִּ֝צִּ֗י כִּֽי־ אַאֲרִ֥יךְ נַפְשִֽׁי׃

BCC ¹² Ma force est-elle la force des pierres, et ma chair est-elle d'airain ?

KJV ¹² Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

WLC ¹² אִם־ כֹּ֣חַ אֲבָנִ֣ים כֹּחִ֑י אִֽם־ בְּשָׂרִ֥י נָחֽוּשׁ׃

BCC ¹³ Ne suis-je pas dénué de tout secours, et tout espoir de salut ne m'est-il pas enlevé ?

KJV ¹³ Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?

WLC ¹³ הַאִ֬ם אֵ֣ין עֶזְרָתִ֣י בִ֑י וְ֝תֻשִׁיָּ֗ה נִדְּחָ֥ה מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

BCC ¹⁴ Le malheureux a droit à la pitié de son ami, eût-il même abandonné la crainte du Tout-Puissant.

KJV ¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

WLC ¹⁴ לַמָּ֣ס מֵרֵעֵ֣הוּ חָ֑סֶד וְיִרְאַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יַעֲזֽוֹב׃

BCC ¹⁵ Mes frères ont été perfides comme le torrent, comme l'eau des torrents qui s'écoulent.

KJV ¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;

WLC ¹⁵ אַ֭חַי בָּגְד֣וּ כְמוֹ־ נָ֑חַל כַּאֲפִ֖יק נְחָלִ֣ים יַעֲבֹֽרוּ׃

BCC ¹⁶ Les glaçons en troublent le cours, la neige disparaît dans leurs flots.

KJV ¹⁶ Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:

WLC ¹⁶ הַקֹּדְרִ֥ים מִנִּי־ קָ֑רַח עָ֝לֵ֗ימוֹ יִתְעַלֶּם־ שָֽׁלֶג׃

BCC ¹⁷ Au temps de la sécheresse, ils s'évanouissent ; aux premières chaleurs, leur lit est desséché.

KJV ¹⁷ What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

WLC ¹⁷ בְּ֭עֵת יְזֹרְב֣וּ נִצְמָ֑תוּ בְּ֝חֻמּ֗וֹ נִדְעֲכ֥וּ מִמְּקוֹמָֽם׃

BCC ¹⁸ Dans des sentiers divers leurs eaux se perdent, elles s'évaporent dans les airs, et ils tarissent.

KJV ¹⁸ The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.

WLC ¹⁸ יִ֭לָּ֣פְתוּ אָרְח֣וֹת דַּרְכָּ֑ם יַעֲל֖וּ בַתֹּ֣הוּ וְיֹאבֵֽדוּ׃

BCC ¹⁹ Les caravanes de Théma comptaient sur eux ; les voyageurs de Saba espéraient en eux ;

KJV ¹⁹ The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.

WLC ¹⁹ הִ֭בִּיטוּ אָרְח֣וֹת תֵּמָ֑א הֲלִיכֹ֥ת שְׁ֝בָ֗א קִוּוּ־ לָֽמוֹ׃

BCC ²⁰ ils sont frustrés dans leur attente ; arrivés sur leurs bords, ils restent confondus.

KJV ²⁰ They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.

WLC ²⁰ בֹּ֥שׁוּ כִּֽי־ בָטָ֑ח בָּ֥אוּ עָ֝דֶ֗יהָ וַיֶּחְפָּֽרוּ׃

BCC ²¹ Ainsi vous me manquez à cette heure ; à la vue de l'infortune, vous fuyez épouvantés.

KJV ²¹ For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.

WLC ²¹ כִּֽי־ עַ֭תָּה הֱיִ֣יתֶם תִּֽרְא֥וּ חֲ֝תַ֗ת וַתִּירָֽאוּ׃

BCC ²² Vous ai-je dit : "donnez-moi quelque chose, faites-moi part de vos biens,

KJV ²² Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?

WLC ²² הֲ‍ֽכִי־ אָ֭מַרְתִּי הָ֣בוּ לִ֑י וּ֝מִכֹּחֲכֶ֗ם שִׁחֲד֥וּ בַעֲדִֽי׃

BCC ²³ délivrez-moi de la main de l'ennemi, arrachez-moi de la main des brigands ?"

KJV ²³ Or, Deliver me from the enemy's hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?

WLC ²³ וּמַלְּט֥וּנִי מִיַּד־ צָ֑ר וּמִיַּ֖ד עָרִיצִ֣ים תִּפְדּֽוּנִי׃

BCC ²⁴ Instruisez-moi, et je vous écouterai en silence ; faites-moi voir en quoi j'ai failli.

KJV ²⁴ Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

WLC ²⁴ ה֭וֹרוּנִי וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲרִ֑ישׁ וּמַה־ שָּׁ֝גִ֗יתִי הָבִ֥ינוּ לִֽי׃

BCC ²⁵ Qu'elles ont de force les paroles équitables ! Mais sur quoi tombe votre blâme ?

KJV ²⁵ How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?

WLC ²⁵ מַה־ נִּמְרְצ֥וּ אִמְרֵי־ יֹ֑שֶׁר וּמַה־ יּוֹכִ֖יחַ הוֹכֵ֣חַ מִכֶּֽם׃

BCC ²⁶ Voulez-vous donc censurer des mots ? Les discours échappés au désespoir sont la proie du vent.

KJV ²⁶ Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

WLC ²⁶ הַלְהוֹכַ֣ח מִלִּ֣ים תַּחְשֹׁ֑בוּ וּ֝לְר֗וּחַ אִמְרֵ֥י נֹאָֽשׁ׃

BCC ²⁷ Ah ! Vous jetez le filet sur un orphelin, vous creusez un piège à votre ennemi !

KJV ²⁷ Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.

WLC ²⁷ אַף־ עַל־ יָת֥וֹם תַּפִּ֑ילוּ וְ֝תִכְר֗וּ עַל־ רֵֽיעֲכֶֽם׃

BCC ²⁸ Maintenant, daignez vous retourner vers moi, et vous verrez si je vous mens en face.

KJV ²⁸ Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.

WLC ²⁸ וְ֭עַתָּה הוֹאִ֣ילוּ פְנוּ־ בִ֑י וְעַל־ פְּ֝נֵיכֶ֗ם אִם־ אֲכַזֵּֽב׃

BCC ²⁹ Revenez, ne soyez pas injustes ; revenez, et mon innocence apparaîtra.

KJV ²⁹ Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.

WLC ²⁹ שֻֽׁבוּ־ נָ֭א אַל־ תְּהִ֣י עַוְלָ֑ה ע֝וֹד צִדְקִי־ בָֽהּ׃

BCC ³⁰ Y a-t-il de l'iniquité sur ma langue, ou bien mon palais ne sait-il pas discerner le mal ?

KJV ³⁰ Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?

WLC ³⁰ הֲיֵשׁ־ בִּלְשׁוֹנִ֥י עַוְלָ֑ה אִם־ חִ֝כִּ֗י לֹא־ יָבִ֥ין הַוּֽוֹת׃
