BCC ¹ La parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jonas, fils d'Amathi, en ces termes :

KJV ¹ Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

WLC ¹ וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־ יוֹנָ֥ה בֶן־ אֲמִתַּ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃

BCC ² "Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche contre elle ; car leur méchanceté est montée jusqu'à moi."

KJV ² Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

WLC ² ק֠וּם לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־ נִֽינְוֵ֛ה הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־ עָלְתָ֥ה רָעָתָ֖ם לְפָנָֽי׃

BCC ³ Et Jonas se leva pour s'enfuir à Tharsis, loin de la face de Yahweh. Il descendit à Joppé, et trouva un vaisseau qui allait à Tharsis et, ayant payé son passage, il y descendit pour aller avec eux à Tharsis, loin de la face de Yahweh.

KJV ³ But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

WLC ³ וַיָּ֤קָם יוֹנָה֙ לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ וַיִּמְצָ֥א אָנִיָּ֣ה ׀ בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה׃

BCC ⁴ Mais Yahweh fit souffler un grand vent sur la mer, et il y eut sur la mer une grande tempête ; le vaisseau menaçait de se briser.

KJV ⁴ But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

WLC ⁴ וַֽיהוָ֗ה הֵטִ֤יל רֽוּחַ־ גְּדוֹלָה֙ אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם וַיְהִ֥י סַֽעַר־ גָּד֖וֹל בַּיָּ֑ם וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה חִשְּׁבָ֖ה לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃

BCC ⁵ Les mariniers eurent peur ; ils crièrent chacun à leur dieu, et jetèrent à la mer les objets qui étaient sur le vaisseau, pour s'alléger. Et Jonas était descendu au fond du navire ; il s'était couché et dormait profondément.

KJV ⁵ Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

WLC ⁵ וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ אֱלֹהָיו֒ וַיָּטִ֨לוּ אֶת־ הַכֵּלִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם לְהָקֵ֖ל מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְיוֹנָ֗ה יָרַד֙ אֶל־ יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַסְּפִינָ֔ה וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃

BCC ⁶ Alors le chef de l'équipage s'approcha de lui et lui dit : "qu'as-tu à dormir ? Lève-toi, invoque ton Dieu ; peut-être Dieu pensera-t-il à nous, et nous ne périrons point !"

KJV ⁶ So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּקְרַ֤ב אֵלָיו֙ רַ֣ב הַחֹבֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ מַה־ לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם ק֚וּם קְרָ֣א אֶל־ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אוּלַ֞י יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים לָ֖נוּ וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃

BCC ⁷ Et ils se dirent les uns aux autres " Venez, jetons les sorts, afin que nous sachions de qui nous vient ce mal. "Ils jetèrent les sorts, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.

KJV ⁷ And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

WLC ⁷ וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ רֵעֵ֗הוּ לְכוּ֙ וְנַפִּ֣ילָה גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ וַיַּפִּ֙לוּ֙ גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וַיִּפֹּ֥ל הַגּוֹרָ֖ל עַל־ יוֹנָֽה׃

BCC ⁸ Alors ils lui dirent : "dis-nous donc à cause de qui nous arrive ce mal ; quelle est ta profession, d'où viens-tu, quel est ton pays et de quel peuple es-tu ?

KJV ⁸ Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

WLC ⁸ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו הַגִּידָה־ נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר לְמִי־ הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ מַה־ מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ וְאֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֥ה עַ֖ם אָֽתָּה׃

BCC ⁹ Il leur répondit : "Je suis un Hébreu et j'adore Yahweh, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre."

KJV ⁹ And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

WLC ⁹ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עִבְרִ֣י אָנֹ֑כִי וְאֶת־ יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־ הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־ הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

BCC ¹⁰ Les hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte, et ils lui dirent : "qu'as-tu fait !" Car les hommes savaient qu'il s'enfuyait loin de la face de Yahweh, parce qu'il le leur avait déclaré.

KJV ¹⁰ Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ יִרְאָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו מַה־ זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑יתָ כִּֽי־ יָדְע֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּֽי־ מִלִּפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא בֹרֵ֔חַ כִּ֥י הִגִּ֖יד לָהֶֽם׃

BCC ¹¹ Ils lui dirent : "que te ferons-nous, pour que la mer s'apaise pour nous ?" Car la mer continuait de se soulever de plus en plus.

KJV ¹¹ Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

WLC ¹¹ וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ מַה־ נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃

BCC ¹² Il leur répondit : "prenez-moi et me jetez à la mer, et la mer s'apaisera pour vous ; car je sais que c'est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous."

KJV ¹² And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

WLC ¹² וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם שָׂא֙וּנִי֙ וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יוֹדֵ֣עַ אָ֔נִי כִּ֣י בְשֶׁלִּ֔י הַסַּ֧עַר הַגָּד֛וֹל הַזֶּ֖ה עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

BCC ¹³ Les hommes ramaient pour ramener le vaisseau à la terre, mais ils ne le purent pas car la mer continuait de se soulever de plus en plus contre eux.

KJV ¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

WLC ¹³ וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים לְהָשִׁ֛יב אֶל־ הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵ֖ר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

BCC ¹⁴ Alors ils crièrent à Yahweh et dirent : "Ah ! Yahweh, que nous ne périssions pas pour l'âme de cet homme, et ne nous chargez pas d'un sang innocent ; car c'est vous, Yahweh, qui avez fait comme il vous a plu."

KJV ¹⁴ Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אַל־ נָ֣א נֹאבְדָ֗ה בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַל־ תִּתֵּ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֑יא כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

BCC ¹⁵ Et prenant Jonas, ils le jetèrent à la mer ;et la mer calma sa fureur.

KJV ¹⁵ So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־ יוֹנָ֔ה וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ אֶל־ הַיָּ֑ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הַיָּ֖ם מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃

BCC ¹⁶ Et les hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte pour Yahweh ; ils offrirent un sacrifice à Yahweh et firent des voeux.

KJV ¹⁶ Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים יִרְאָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֶת־ יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־ זֶ֙בַח֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ נְדָרִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁷ Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
