KJV ¹ But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

OST ¹ Mais cela déplut extrêmement à Jonas, et il en fut irrité.

VULC ¹ Et afflictus est Jonas afflictione magna, et iratus est :

KJV ² And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

OST ² Et il fit sa requête à l'Éternel, et dit: Ah! Éternel, n'est-ce pas là ce que je disais quand j'étais encore dans mon pays? C'est pourquoi je voulais prévenir cela en m'enfuyant à Tarsis. Car je savais que tu es un Dieu miséricordieux, compatissant, lent à la colère et abondant en grâce, et qui te repens du mal.

VULC ² et oravit ad Dominum, et dixit : Obsecro, Domine, numquid non hoc est verbum meum cum adhuc essem in terra mea ? propter hoc præoccupavi ut fugerem in Tharsis : scio enim quia tu Deus clemens et misericors es, patiens et multæ miserationis, et ignoscens super malitia.

KJV ³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

OST ³ Maintenant, Éternel, prends donc ma vie; car mieux me vaut la mort que la vie!

VULC ³ Et nunc, Domine, tolle, quæso, animam meam a me, quia melior est mihi mors quam vita.

KJV ⁴ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

OST ⁴ Et l'Éternel lui dit: Fais-tu bien de t'irriter?

VULC ⁴ Et dixit Dominus : Putasne bene irasceris tu ?

KJV ⁵ So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

OST ⁵ Alors Jonas sortit de la ville, et s'assit à l'orient de la ville; il s'y fit une cabane et s'y tint à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vit ce qui arriverait à la ville.

VULC ⁵ Et egressus est Jonas de civitate, et sedit contra orientem civitatis : et fecit sibimet umbraculum ibi, et sedebat subter illud in umbra, donec videret quid accideret civitati.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

OST ⁶ Et l'Éternel fit croître un ricin, qui s'éleva au-dessus de Jonas, pour donner de l'ombre sur sa tête et le délivrer de son chagrin. Et Jonas éprouva une grande joie à cause de ce ricin.

VULC ⁶ Et præparavit Dominus Deus hederam, et ascendit super caput Jonæ, ut esset umbra super caput ejus, et protegeret eum (laboraverat enim) : et lætatus est Jonas super hedera lætitia magna.

KJV ⁷ But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

OST ⁷ Mais Dieu fit venir le lendemain, au lever de l'aurore, un ver qui attaqua le ricin, en sorte qu'il sécha.

VULC ⁷ Et paravit Deus vermen ascensu diluculi in crastinum : et percussit hederam, et exaruit.

KJV ⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

OST ⁸ Puis il arriva qu'au lever du soleil Dieu fit venir un vent chaud d'orient, et le soleil frappa sur la tête de Jonas, en sorte qu'il tomba en défaillance. Et il demanda la mort, et dit: Mieux me vaut la mort que la vie!

VULC ⁸ Et cum ortus fuisset sol, præcepit Dominus vento calido et urenti : et percussit sol super caput Jonæ, et æstuabat : et petivit animæ suæ ut moreretur, et dixit : Melius est mihi mori quam vivere.

KJV ⁹ And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

OST ⁹ Mais Dieu dit à Jonas: Fais-tu bien de t'irriter à cause de ce ricin? Et il répondit: J'ai raison de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort.

VULC ⁹ Et dixit Dominus ad Jonam : Putasne bene irasceris tu super hedera ? Et dixit : Bene irascor ego usque ad mortem.

KJV ¹⁰ Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

OST ¹⁰ Alors l'Éternel dit: Tu as pitié d'un ricin, pour lequel tu n'as pris aucune peine, et que tu n'as point fait croître, qui est né dans une nuit, et dans une nuit a péri;

VULC ¹⁰ Et dixit Dominus : Tu doles super hederam in qua non laborasti, neque fecisti ut cresceret ; quæ sub una nocte nata est, et sub una nocte periit :

KJV ¹¹ And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

OST ¹¹ Et moi je n'aurais pas pitié de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille créatures humaines qui ne savent pas distinguer leur droite de leur gauche, et du bétail en grand nombre!

VULC ¹¹ et ego non parcam Ninive, civitati magnæ, in qua sunt plus quam centum viginti millia hominum qui nesciunt quid sit inter dexteram et sinistram suam, et jumenta multa ?
