   ¹ En ce temps, où il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël, un homme de la tribu de Lévi, séjournant dans la partie la plus reculée de la montagne d'Ephraïm, prit pour concubine une femme de Bethléem de Juda. ² Et sa concubine lui fut infidèle et elle s'en alla d'avec lui dans la maison de son père à Bethléem de Juda, et elle resta là l'espace de quatre mois. ³ Et son mari se leva et alla après elle pour parler à son coeur et le ramener à lui. Et il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Et elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père, et le père de la jeune fille le vit, et alla au-devant de lui avec joie. ⁴ Et son beau-père, le père de la jeune fille, le retint, et il demeura chez lui trois jours. Et ils mangèrent et burent et ils y logèrent. ⁵ Et le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin et il se disposait à partir. Et le père de la jeune fille dit à son gendre : Fortifie ton coeur en prenant un morceau de pain, et vous partirez ensuite. ⁶ Et ils s'assirent, et ils mangèrent tous deux ensemble et burent. Et le père de la jeune fille dit au mari : Consens, je te prie, à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse ! ⁷ Et le mari se leva pour s'en aller, mais son beau-père le pressa, et il revint et passa la nuit. ⁸ Et le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir. Et le père de la jeune fille dit : Je te prie, fortifie ton coeur et diffère jusqu'à ce que le jour baisse. Et ils mangèrent tous deux. ⁹ Et le mari se leva pour partir, lui et sa concubine et son serviteur, mais son beau-père, le père de la jeune fille, lui dit : Vois, je te prie, le jour faiblit ; le sombre vient, passez ici la nuit. Voici, le jour baisse, passe ici la nuit et que ton coeur se réjouisse ; et demain vous vous lèverez de bon matin pour vous mettre en route, et tu retourneras chez toi. ¹⁰ Et le mari ne voulut point passer la nuit et il se leva et partit. Et il vint jusqu'en face de Jébus, qui est Jérusalem, et il avait avec lui les deux ânes bâtés et sa concubine. ¹¹ Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Et le serviteur dit à son maître : Viens, je te prie, détournons nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, et nous y passerons la nuit. ¹² Et son maître lui dit : Nous ne nous détournerons pas vers une ville étrangère, où il n'y a pas de fils d'Israël, et nous passerons jusqu'à Guibéa. ¹³ Et il dit à son serviteur : Allons et tâchons d'atteindre l'une de ces localités, et nous passerons la nuit à Guibéa ou à Rama. ¹⁴ Et ils passèrent outre et continuèrent leur route, et le soleil se coucha pour eux comme ils étaient près de Guibéa qui est à Benjamin. ¹⁵ Et ils se détournèrent du chemin pour aller passer la nuit à Guibéa. Et il entra et s'arrêta sur la place de la ville, et il n'y eut personne qui les recueillit dans sa maison pour y passer la nuit.
   ¹⁶ Et voici, un vieillard revenait le soir de son travail, de la campagne, et cet homme était de la montagne d'Ephraïm ; et il séjournait à Guibéa, et les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites. ¹⁷ Et il leva les yeux et vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville ; et le vieillard dit : Où vas-tu et d'où viens-tu ? ¹⁸ Et il lui dit : Nous allons de Bethléem de Juda jusqu'à la partie la plus reculée de la montagne d'Ephraïm, d'où je suis. Je suis allé jusqu'à Bethléem de Juda, et je suis employé dans la maison de l'Eternel, et il n'y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa maison. ¹⁹ Et pourtant j'ai de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, et aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante et pour le jeune homme qui est avec tes serviteurs ; nous avons de tout. ²⁰ Et le vieillard dit : La paix soit sur toi ! Seulement je te donnerai tout dont tu auras besoin ; mais tu ne passeras pas la nuit sur la place. ²¹ Et il le fit entrer dans sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes, et ils se lavèrent les pieds ; et ils mangèrent et burent.
   ²² Pendant qu'ils étaient là à se réconforter, voici, les hommes de la ville, hommes pervers, entourèrent la maison, se ruant contre la porte, et ils dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison : Fais sortir l'homme qui est entré chez toi, pour que nous le connaissions. ²³ Et le maître de la maison sortit vers eux et leur dit : Non, mes frères, ne faites pas le mal, je vous prie ! Puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie. ²⁴ Voici, ma fille qui est vierge, et sa concubine, je vous les amènerai dehors ; vous leur ferez violence et vous les traiterez comme il vous plaira. Mais sur cet homme ne commettez pas cette action infâme. ²⁵ Et ces hommes ne voulurent pas l'écouter. Et l'homme prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Et ils la connurent et abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin, et ils la renvoyèrent au lever de l'aurore. ²⁶ Et vers le matin, cette femme vint, et elle tomba à la porte de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son maître, et y resta jusqu'au jour. ²⁷ Et le matin, son maître se leva, et il ouvrit la porte de la maison et sortit pour continuer son chemin ; et voici, la femme, sa concubine, était étendue à l'entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil. ²⁸ Et il lui dit : Lève-toi et partons ! Et personne ne répondit. Et le mari la prit sur son âne, et il partit et s'en alla chez lui. ²⁹ Et arrivé dans sa maison, il prit le couteau, et saisit sa concubine, et la coupa membre par membre en douze morceaux, et il l'envoya dans tout le, territoire d'Israël. ³⁰ Et tous ceux qui virent cela dirent : Jamais chose pareille n'est arrivée et ne s'est vue depuis le jour où les fils d'Israël sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui. Prenez la chose à coeur, consultez et prononcez !

   ¹ And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. ² And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months. ³ And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. ⁴ And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there. ⁵ And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way. ⁶ And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. ⁷ And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again. ⁸ And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them. ⁹ And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home. ¹⁰ But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him. ¹¹ And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. ¹² And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah. ¹³ And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah. ¹⁴ And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin. ¹⁵ And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
   ¹⁶ And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. ¹⁷ And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? ¹⁸ And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house. ¹⁹ Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. ²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. ²¹ So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
   ²² Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. ²³ And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. ²⁴ Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing. ²⁵ But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. ²⁶ Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light. ²⁷ And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. ²⁸ And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place. ²⁹ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. ³⁰ And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

   ¹ Fuit quidam vir Levites habitans in latere montis Ephraim, qui accepit uxorem de Bethlehem Juda :
   ² quæ reliquit eum, et reversa est in domum patris sui in Bethlehem, mansitque apud eum quatuor mensibus.
   ³ Secutusque est eam vir suus, volens reconciliari ei, atque blandiri, et secum reducere, habens in comitatu puerum et duos asinos : quæ suscepit eum, et introduxit in domum patris sui. Quod cum audisset socer ejus, eumque vidisset, occurrit ei lætus,
   ⁴ et amplexatus est hominem. Mansitque gener in domo soceri tribus diebus, comedens cum eo et bibens familiariter.
   ⁵ Die autem quarto de nocte consurgens, proficisci voluit : quem tenuit socer, et ait ad eum : Gusta prius pauxillum panis, et conforta stomachum, et sic proficisceris.
   ⁶ Sederuntque simul, ac comederunt et biberunt. Dixitque pater puellæ ad generum suum : Quæso te ut hodie hic maneas, pariterque lætemur.
   ⁷ At ille consurgens, cœpit velle proficisci. Et nihilominus obnixe eum socer tenuit, et apud se fecit manere.
   ⁸ Mane autem facto, parabat Levites iter. Cui socer rursum : Oro te, inquit, ut paululum cibi capias, et assumptis viribus donec increscat dies, postea proficiscaris. Comederunt ergo simul.
   ⁹ Surrexitque adolescens, ut pergeret cum uxore sua et puero. Cui rursum locutus est socer : Considera quod dies ad occasum declivior sit, et propinquat ad vesperum : mane apud me etiam hodie, et duc lætum diem, et cras proficisceris ut vadas in domum tuam.
