BCC ² Les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d'Israël, se présentèrent dans l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu : quatre cent mille hommes de pied tirant l'épée.

KJV ² And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

BCC ³ Et les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Maspha. Les enfants d'Israël dirent : "Parlez : comment ce crime a-t-il été commis !"

KJV ³ (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

VULC ³ (Nec latuit filios Benjamin quod ascendissent filii Israël in Maspha.) Interrogatusque Levita, maritus mulieris interfectæ, quomodo tantum scelus perpetratum esset,

BCC ⁴ Alors le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole et dit : "J'étais entré à Gabon de Benjamin, moi et ma concubine, pour y passer la nuit.

KJV ⁴ And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

VULC ⁴ respondit : Veni in Gabaa Benjamin cum uxore mea, illucque diverti :

WLC ⁴ וַיַּ֜עַן הָאִ֣ישׁ הַלֵּוִ֗י אִ֛ישׁ הָאִשָּׁ֥ה הַנִּרְצָחָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַגִּבְעָ֙תָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּ֛אתִי אֲנִ֥י וּפִֽילַגְשִׁ֖י לָלֽוּן׃

BCC ⁵ Les habitants de Gabaa se sont levés contre moi et ont entouré pendant la nuit la maison où j'étais ; ils avaient l'intention de me tuer, et ils ont fait violence à ma concubine, et elle est morte.

KJV ⁵ And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

VULC ⁵ et ecce homines civitatis illius circumdederunt nocte domum in qua manebam, volentes me occidere, et uxorem meam incredibili furore libidinis vexantes, denique mortua est.

WLC ⁵ וַיָּקֻ֤מוּ עָלַי֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י הַגִּבְעָ֔ה וַיָּסֹ֧בּוּ עָלַ֛י אֶת־ הַבַּ֖יִת לָ֑יְלָה אוֹתִי֙ דִּמּ֣וּ לַהֲרֹ֔ג וְאֶת־ פִּילַגְשִׁ֥י עִנּ֖וּ וַתָּמֹֽת׃

BCC ⁶ J'ai saisi ma concubine, je l'ai coupée en morceaux, et je l'ai envoyée dans tout le territoire de l'héritage d'Israël ; car ils ont commis un crime et une infamie en Israël.

KJV ⁶ And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

VULC ⁶ Quam arreptam, in frusta concidi, misique partes in omnes terminos possessionis vestræ : quia numquam tantum nefas, et tam grande piaculum, factum est in Israël.

KJV ⁷ Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

BCC ⁸ Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme en disant : "Nul d'entre nous n'ira dans sa tente, nul ne retournera dans sa maison.

BCC ⁹ Voici maintenant ce que nous ferons à Gabaa : Contre elle d'après le sort !

KJV ⁹ But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

VULC ⁹ sed hoc contra Gabaa in commune faciamus.

WLC ⁹ וְעַתָּ֕ה זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַגִּבְעָ֑ה עָלֶ֖יהָ בְּגוֹרָֽל׃

BCC ¹⁰ Nous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille ; ils iront chercher des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu'à leur arrivée on traite Gabaa de Benjamin selon toute l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël."

KJV ¹⁰ And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

KJV ¹¹ So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

BCC ¹² Les tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des hommes dans toutes les familles de Benjamin pour dire : "qu'est-ce que ce crime qui a été commis chez vous ?

KJV ¹² And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

VULC ¹² Et miserunt nuntios ad omnem tribum Benjamin, qui dicerent : Cur tantum nefas in vobis repertum est ?

WLC ¹² וַֽיִּשְׁלְח֞וּ שִׁבְטֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים בְּכָל־ שִׁבְטֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר מָ֚ה הָרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִהְיְתָ֖ה בָּכֶֽם׃

BCC ¹³ Livrez maintenant les hommes pervers qui sont à Gabaa, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d'Israël." Mais les Benjamites ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères les enfants d'Israël.

KJV ¹³ Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

VULC ¹³ Tradite homines de Gabaa, qui hoc flagitium perpetrarunt, ut moriantur, et auferatur malum de Israël. Qui noluerunt fratrum suorum filiorum Israël audire mandatum :

BCC ¹⁴ Les fils de Benjamin, sortant de leurs villes, s'assemblèrent à Gabaa pour partir en guerre contre les enfants d'Israël.

KJV ¹⁴ But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

VULC ¹⁴ sed ex cunctis urbibus, quæ sortis suæ erant, convenerunt in Gabaa, ut illis ferrent auxilium, et contra universum populum Israël dimicarent.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֵּאָסְפ֧וּ בְנֵֽי־ בִנְיָמִ֛ן מִן־ הֶעָרִ֖ים הַגִּבְעָ֑תָה לָצֵ֥את לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

BCC ¹⁵ Les fils de Benjamin, sortis des villes, furent recensés en ce jour au nombre de vingt six mille, tirant l'épée, sans compter les habitants de Gabaa, formant sept cents hommes d'élite.

KJV ¹⁵ And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

BCC ¹⁶ Parmi tout ce peuple il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite qui ne se servaient pas de la main droite ; tous ces combattants pouvaient lancer avec la fronde une pierre à un cheveu, sans le manquer.

KJV ¹⁶ Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

KJV ¹⁷ And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

KJV ¹⁹ And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

BCC ²⁰ Les hommes d'Israël s'avancèrent pour combattre ceux de Benjamin, et les hommes d'Israël se rangèrent en bataille contre eux, devant Gabaa.

KJV ²⁰ And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

VULC ²⁰ et inde procedentes ad pugnam contra Benjamin, urbem oppugnare cœperunt.

KJV ²¹ And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

BCC ²² Le peuple, savoir les hommes d'Israël, affermirent leur courage, et ils se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s'étaient placés le premier jour.

KJV ²² And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

BCC ²³ Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent et ils pleurèrent devant Yahweh jusqu'au soir ; et ils consultèrent Yahweh, en disant : "Marcherai-je encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère ?" Yahweh répondit : "Montez contre lui."

KJV ²³ (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

BCC ²⁴ Les enfants d'Israël s'approchèrent des fils de Benjamin, le second jour ;

KJV ²⁴ And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

KJV ²⁵ And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

BCC ²⁶ Tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel ; Ils pleurèrent, assis là devant Yahweh ; ils jeûnèrent en ce jour jusqu'au soir, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques devant Yahweh.

KJV ²⁶ Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

BCC ²⁷ Et les enfants d'Israël consultèrent Yahweh, ‒ en ces jours-là, l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu était là,

BCC ²⁸ et Phinées, fils d'Éléazar, fils d'Aaron, se tenait devant elle, en ces jours, ‒ et ils dirent : "Marcherai-je encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère, ou bien dois-je cesser ?" Yahweh répondit : "Montez, car demain je les livrerai en ta main."

KJV ²⁸ And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

BCC ³⁰ et, le troisième jour, les enfants d'Israël montèrent contre les fils de Benjamin ; ils se rangèrent en bataille devant Gabaa, comme les autres fois.

KJV ³⁰ And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

VULC ³⁰ et tertia vice, sicut semel et bis, contra Benjamin exercitum produxerunt.

BCC ³¹ Et les fils de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, en se laissant attirer loin de la ville. Ils commencèrent à frapper et à tuer parmi le peuple, comme les autres fois, sur les routes dont l'une monte à Béthel et l'autre à Gabaa, dans la campagne ;

KJV ³¹ And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

BCC ³² Ils tuèrent environ trente hommes d'Israël. Les fils de Benjamin disaient : "les voilà battus devant nous comme auparavant !" Et les enfants d'Israël disaient : "fuyons, et attirons les loin de la ville, sur ces routes."

KJV ³² And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

VULC ³² putaverunt enim solito eos more cedere. Qui fugam arte simulantes inierunt consilium ut abstraherent eos de civitate, et quasi fugientes ad supradictas semitas perducerent.

BCC ³³ Tous les hommes d'Israël quittèrent leur position et se rangèrent à Baal-Thamar ; en même temps l'embuscade d'Israël s'élança de son poste, de la plaine de Gabaa.

KJV ³³ And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

BCC ³⁴ Dix mille hommes d'élite de tout Israël arrivèrent ainsi de devant Gabaa. Le combat fut rude, et les fils de Benjamin ne se doutaient pas que le malheur allait les atteindre.

KJV ³⁴ And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

BCC ³⁵ Yahweh battit Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent ce jour-là à Benjamin vingt cinq mille et cent hommes, tous tirant l'épée.

KJV ³⁵ And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

BCC ³⁶ Les fils de Benjamin virent donc qu'ils étaient battus. Les hommes d'Israël n'avaient, en effet, cédé du terrain à Benjamin que parce qu'ils avaient confiance dans l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée contre Gabaa.

KJV ³⁶ So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

VULC ³⁶ Filii autem Benjamin cum se inferiores esse vidissent, cœperunt fugere. Quod cernentes filii Israël, dederunt eis ad fugiendum locum, ut ad præparatas insidias devenirent, quas juxta urbem posuerant.

WLC ³⁶ וַיִּרְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־ בִנְיָמִ֖ן כִּ֣י נִגָּ֑פוּ וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ אִֽישׁ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל מָקוֹם֙ לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן כִּ֤י בָֽטְחוּ֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֹרֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֖מוּ אֶל־ הַגִּבְעָֽה׃

BCC ³⁷ Quant aux hommes de l'embuscade, ils se jetèrent promptement sur Gabaa ; puis, s'avançant, les hommes de l'embuscade frappèrent toute la ville du tranchant de l'épée.

KJV ³⁷ And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

VULC ³⁷ Qui cum repente de latibulis surrexissent, et Benjamin terga cædentibus daret, ingressi sunt civitatem, et percusserunt eam in ore gladii.

WLC ³⁷ וְהָאֹרֵ֣ב הֵחִ֔ישׁוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ אֶל־ הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הָאֹרֵ֔ב וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָעִ֖יר לְפִי־ חָֽרֶב׃

BCC ³⁸ Or il y avait ce signe convenu, entre les hommes d'Israël et ceux de l'embuscade que ceux-ci feraient monter de la ville un nuage de fumée.

KJV ³⁸ Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

VULC ³⁸ Signum autem dederant filii Israël his quos in insidiis collocaverant, ut postquam urbem cepissent, ignem accenderent : ut ascendente in altum fumo, captam urbem demonstrarent.

WLC ³⁸ וְהַמּוֹעֵ֗ד הָיָ֛ה לְאִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עִם־ הָאֹרֵ֑ב הֶ֕רֶב לְהַעֲלוֹתָ֛ם מַשְׂאַ֥ת הֶעָשָׁ֖ן מִן־ הָעִֽיר׃

BCC ³⁹ Les hommes d'Israël firent alors volte-face dans la bataille. Les Benjamites leur avaient tué déjà environ trente hommes, et ils disaient : "Certainement les voilà battus devant nous comme dans le premier combat !"

KJV ³⁹ And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

VULC ³⁹ Quod cum cernerent filii Israël in ipso certamine positi (putaverunt enim filii Benjamin eos fugere, et instantius persequebantur, cæsis de exercitu eorum triginta viris),

BCC ⁴⁰ Mais le nuage commençait à s'élever de la ville comme une colonne de fumée, et les Benjamites, regardant derrière eux, aperçurent la ville entière qui montait en feu vers le ciel.

KJV ⁴⁰ But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

VULC ⁴⁰ et viderent quasi columnam fumi de civitate conscendere : Benjamin quoque aspiciens retro, cum captam cerneret civitatem, et flammas in sublime ferri :

BCC ⁴¹ Les hommes d'Israël firent volte face, et les hommes de Benjamin furent épouvantés en voyant que le malheur les atteignait.

KJV ⁴¹ And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

BCC ⁴² Ils tournèrent le dos devant les hommes d'Israël, par le chemin du désert ; mais les combattants les serrèrent de près, et ils tuèrent ceux des villes chacun en leurs propres endroits.

KJV ⁴² Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

VULC ⁴² et ad viam deserti ire cœperunt, illuc quoque eos adversariis persequentibus : sed et hi qui urbem succenderant, occurrerunt eis.

BCC ⁴³ Ils cernèrent Benjamin, ils le poursuivirent, ils l'écrasèrent là où il faisait halte, jusqu'en face de Gabaa, du côté du soleil levant.

KJV ⁴³ Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

KJV ⁴⁴ And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

VULC ⁴⁴ Fuerunt autem qui in eodem loco interfecti sunt, decem et octo millia virorum, omnes robustissimi pugnatores.

BCC ⁴⁵ Ceux qui restaient tournèrent le dos et s'enfuirent vers le désert, vers le rocher de Remmon. Les hommes d'Israël tuèrent cinq mille hommes sur les routes ; ils les serrèrent de près jusqu'à Gédéon, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.

KJV ⁴⁵ And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

VULC ⁴⁵ Quod cum vidissent qui remanserant de Benjamin, fugerunt in solitudinem : et pergebant ad petram, cujus vocabulum est Remmon. In illa quoque fuga palantes, et in diversa tendentes, occiderunt quinque millia virorum. Et cum ultra tenderent, persecuti sunt eos, et interfecerunt etiam alia duo millia.

WLC ⁴⁵ וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ אֶל־ סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן וַיְעֹֽלְלֻ֙הוּ֙ בַּֽמְסִלּ֔וֹת חֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּדְבִּ֤יקוּ אַחֲרָיו֙ עַד־ גִּדְעֹ֔ם וַיַּכּ֥וּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אַלְפַּ֥יִם אִֽישׁ׃

BCC ⁴⁶ Le nombre total des Benjamites qui périrent ce jour-là fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous hommes vaillants.

KJV ⁴⁶ So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

WLC ⁴⁶ וַיְהִי֩ כָל־ הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים מִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן עֶשְׂרִים֩ וַחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה אֶ֥לֶף אִ֛ישׁ שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חֶ֖רֶב בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא אֶֽת־ כָּל־ אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־ חָֽיִל׃

BCC ⁴⁷ Six cents hommes qui avaient tourné le dos et s'étaient enfuis au désert, vers le rocher de Remmon, demeurèrent au rocher de Remmon pendant quatre mois.

KJV ⁴⁷ But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

VULC ⁴⁷ Remanserunt itaque de omni numero Benjamin, qui evadere et fugere in solitudinem potuerunt, sexcenti viri : sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quatuor.

WLC ⁴⁷ וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ אֶל־ סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּסֶ֣לַע רִמּ֔וֹן אַרְבָּעָ֖ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃

BCC ⁴⁸ Les hommes d'Israël revinrent vers les fils de Benjamin, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, depuis les villes, hommes et troupeaux, jusqu'à tout ce qu'on put trouver. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qu'ils trouvèrent.

KJV ⁴⁸ And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

VULC ⁴⁸ Regressi autem filii Israël, omnes reliquias civitatis a viris usque ad jumenta gladio percusserunt, cunctasque urbes et viculos Benjamin vorax flamma consumpsit.
