DRB ¹ Et ce sont ici les nations que l'Éternel laissa subsister pour éprouver par elles Israël, [savoir] tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan ;

KJV ¹ Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

DRB ² [et cela] seulement afin que les générations des fils d'Israël connussent, en l'apprenant, ce que c'est que la guerre, ceux du moins qui auparavant n'en avaient rien connu :

KJV ² Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

VULC ² ut postea discerent filii eorum certare cum hostibus, et habere consuetudinem præliandi :

DRB ³ cinq princes* des Philistins, et tous les Cananéens et les Sidoniens et les Héviens qui habitaient dans la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath ;

KJV ³ Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

VULC ³ quinque satrapas Philisthinorum, omnemque Chananæum, et Sidonium, atque Hevæum, qui habitabat in monte Libano, de monte Baal Hermon usque ad introitum Emath.

DRB ⁴ elles étaient [laissées] pour éprouver par elles Israël, pour savoir s'ils écouteraient les commandements de l'Éternel, qu'il avait commandés à leurs pères par Moïse.

KJV ⁴ And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

DRB ⁵ Et les fils d'Israël habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, et des Amoréens, et des Phéréziens, et des Héviens, et des Jébusiens.

KJV ⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

DRB ⁶ Et ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, et donnèrent leurs filles à leurs fils, et servirent leurs dieux.

KJV ⁶ And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

VULC ⁶ et duxerunt uxores filias eorum, ipsique filias suas filiis eorum tradiderunt, et servierunt diis eorum.

DRB ⁷ Et les fils d'Israël firent ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel, et ils oublièrent l'Éternel, leur Dieu, et servirent les Baals et les ashères*.

KJV ⁷ And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

DRB ⁸ Et la colère de l'Éternel s'embrasa contre Israël, et il les vendit en la main de Cushan-Rishhathaïm, roi d'Aram-Naharaïm*. Et les fils d'Israël servirent Cushan-Rishhathaïm huit ans.

KJV ⁸ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

DRB ⁹ Et les fils d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel ; et l'Éternel suscita aux fils d'Israël un sauveur qui les délivra, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère puîné de Caleb.

KJV ⁹ And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

VULC ⁹ Et clamaverunt ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem, et liberavit eos, Othoniel videlicet filium Cenez, fratrem Caleb minorem :

DRB ¹⁰ Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel fut sur lui, et il jugea Israël ; et il sortit pour la guerre, et l'Éternel livra en sa main Cushan-Rishhathaïm, roi d'Aram*, et sa main fut forte contre Cushan-Rishhathaïm.

KJV ¹⁰ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

DRB ¹¹ Et le pays fut en repos quarante ans.* Et Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut.

KJV ¹¹ And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

VULC ¹¹ Quievitque terra quadraginta annis, et mortuus est Othoniel filius Cenez.

DRB ¹² Et les fils d'Israël firent de nouveau ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils faisaient ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel.

KJV ¹² And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

DRB ¹³ Et [Églon] assembla auprès de lui les fils d'Ammon et Amalek, et il alla et frappa Israël ; et ils prirent possession de la ville des palmiers.

KJV ¹³ And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

VULC ¹³ Et copulavit ei filios Ammon, et Amalec : abiitque et percussit Israël, atque possedit urbem palmarum.

KJV ¹⁴ So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

DRB ¹⁵ Et les fils d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel ; et l'Éternel leur suscita un sauveur, Éhud, fils de Guéra, le Benjaminite, qui était gaucher*. Et les fils d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Églon, roi de Moab**.

KJV ¹⁵ But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

VULC ¹⁵ Et postea clamaverunt ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem vocabulo Aod, filium Gera, filii Jemini, qui utraque manu pro dextera utebatur. Miseruntque filii Israël per illum munera Eglon regi Moab.

DRB ¹⁶ Et Éhud se fit faire une épée à deux tranchants, longue d'une petite coudée, et il la ceignit par dessous ses vêtements, sur la hanche droite.

KJV ¹⁶ But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

VULC ¹⁶ Qui fecit sibi gladium ancipitem, habentem in medio capulum longitudinis palmæ manus, et accinctus est eo subter sagum in dextro femore.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ אֵה֜וּד חֶ֗רֶב וְלָ֛הּ שְׁנֵ֥י פֵי֖וֹת גֹּ֣מֶד אָרְכָּ֑הּ וַיַּחְגֹּ֤ר אוֹתָהּ֙ מִתַּ֣חַת לְמַדָּ֔יו עַ֖ל יֶ֥רֶךְ יְמִינֽוֹ׃

DRB ¹⁷ Et il offrit le présent à Églon, roi de Moab ; or Églon était un homme très gras.

KJV ¹⁷ And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

VULC ¹⁷ Obtulitque munera Eglon regi Moab. Erat autem Eglon crassus nimis.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיַּקְרֵב֙ אֶת־ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה לְעֶגְל֖וֹן מֶ֣לֶךְ מוֹאָ֑ב וְעֶגְל֕וֹן אִ֥ישׁ בָּרִ֖יא מְאֹֽד׃

DRB ¹⁸ Et il arriva que, lorsqu'il eut achevé d'offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui avaient apporté le présent.

KJV ¹⁸ And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

VULC ¹⁸ Cumque obtulisset ei munera, prosecutus est socios, qui cum eo venerant.

WLC ¹⁸ וַֽיְהִי֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר כִּלָּ֔ה לְהַקְרִ֖יב אֶת־ הַמִּנְחָ֑ה וַיְשַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם נֹשְׂאֵ֖י הַמִּנְחָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁹ Mais lui s'en revint des images taillées*, qui étaient près de Guilgal, et dit : J'ai pour toi une parole secrète, ô roi ! Et il dit : Silence ! Et tous ceux qui étaient près de lui sortirent d'auprès de lui.

KJV ¹⁹ But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

DRB ²⁰ Et Éhud entra vers lui ; or il était assis dans une chambre haute de rafraîchissement, qui était pour lui seul ; et Éhud dit : J'ai une parole de Dieu pour toi.

KJV ²⁰ And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

VULC ²⁰ ingressus est Aod ad eum : sedebat autem in æstivo cœnaculo solus : dixitque : Verbum Dei habeo ad te. Qui statim surrexit de throno.

DRB ²¹ Et [le roi] se leva de son siège ; et Éhud étendit sa main gauche, et prit l'épée de dessus son côté droit, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre ;

KJV ²¹ And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

VULC ²¹ Extenditque Aod sinistram manum, et tulit sicam de dextro femore suo, infixitque eam in ventre ejus

WLC ²¹ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אֵהוּד֙ אֶת־ יַ֣ד שְׂמֹאל֔וֹ וַיִּקַּח֙ אֶת־ הַחֶ֔רֶב מֵעַ֖ל יֶ֣רֶךְ יְמִינ֑וֹ וַיִּתְקָעֶ֖הָ בְּבִטְנֽוֹ׃

DRB ²² et même la poignée entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma sur la lame ; car il ne retira pas l'épée de son ventre, et elle sortit entre les jambes.

KJV ²² And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

VULC ²² tam valide, ut capulus sequeretur ferrum in vulnere, ac pinguissimo adipe stringeretur. Nec eduxit gladium, sed ita ut percusserat, reliquit in corpore : statimque per secreta naturæ alvi stercora proruperunt.

DRB ²³ Et Éhud sortit par le portique, et ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute, et mit le verrou.

KJV ²³ Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

VULC ²³ Aod autem clausis diligentissime ostiis cœnaculi, et obfirmatis sera,

WLC ²³ וַיֵּצֵ֥א אֵה֖וּד הַֽמִּסְדְּר֑וֹנָה וַיִּסְגֹּ֞ר דַּלְת֧וֹת הָעַלִיָּ֛ה בַּעֲד֖וֹ וְנָעָֽל׃

DRB ²⁴ Et quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi* vinrent, et virent : et voici, les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou ; et ils dirent : Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre de rafraîchissement.

KJV ²⁴ When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

VULC ²⁴ per posticum egressus est. Servique regis ingressi viderunt clausas fores cœnaculi, atque dixerunt : Forsitan purgat alvum in æstivo cubiculo.

DRB ²⁵ Et ils attendirent jusqu'à en avoir honte ; et voici, on n'ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre* ; et ils prirent la clef et ouvrirent, et voici, leur seigneur gisait par terre, mort.

KJV ²⁵ And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

VULC ²⁵ Expectantesque diu donec erubescerent, et videntes quod nullus aperiret, tulerunt clavem : et aperientes invenerunt dominum suum in terra jacentem mortuum.

DRB ²⁶ Et Éhud s'était échappé pendant qu'ils tardaient, et avait dépassé les images taillées* ; et il se sauva à Sehira.

KJV ²⁶ And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

VULC ²⁶ Aod autem, dum illi turbarentur, effugit, et pertransiit locum idolorum, unde reversus fuerat. Venitque in Seirath :

WLC ²⁶ וְאֵה֥וּד נִמְלַ֖ט עַ֣ד הִֽתְמַהְמְהָ֑ם וְהוּא֙ עָבַ֣ר אֶת־ הַפְּסִילִ֔ים וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט הַשְּׂעִירָֽתָה׃

DRB ²⁷ Et quand il y fut entré, il arriva qu'il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Éphraïm ; et les fils d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et lui devant eux.

KJV ²⁷ And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

WLC ²⁷ וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹא֔וֹ וַיִּתְקַ֥ע בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַיֵּרְד֨וּ עִמּ֧וֹ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִן־ הָהָ֖ר וְה֥וּא לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

DRB ²⁸ Et il leur dit : Suivez-moi, car l'Éternel a livré en votre main vos ennemis, les Moabites. Et ils descendirent après lui, et enlevèrent à Moab les gués du Jourdain, et ne laissèrent passer personne.

KJV ²⁸ And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

WLC ²⁸ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ רִדְפ֣וּ אַחֲרַ֔י כִּֽי־ נָתַ֨ן יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־ אֹיְבֵיכֶ֛ם אֶת־ מוֹאָ֖ב בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם וַיֵּרְד֣וּ אַחֲרָ֗יו וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ אֶת־ מַעְבְּר֤וֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ לְמוֹאָ֔ב וְלֹֽא־ נָתְנ֥וּ אִ֖ישׁ לַעֲבֹֽר׃

DRB ²⁹ Et en ce temps-là, ils frappèrent Moab, environ dix mille hommes, tous forts* et tous vaillants, et pas un n'échappa.

KJV ²⁹ And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

VULC ²⁹ sed percusserunt Moabitas in tempore illo, circiter decem millia, omnes robustos et fortes viros. Nullus eorum evadere potuit.

WLC ²⁹ וַיַּכּ֨וּ אֶת־ מוֹאָ֜ב בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗יא כַּעֲשֶׂ֤רֶת אֲלָפִים֙ אִ֔ישׁ כָּל־ שָׁמֵ֖ן וְכָל־ אִ֣ישׁ חָ֑יִל וְלֹ֥א נִמְלַ֖ט אִֽישׁ׃

DRB ³⁰ Et en ce jour-là, Moab fut abattu sous la main d'Israël ; et le pays fut en repos quatre-vingts ans.

KJV ³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

VULC ³⁰ Humiliatusque est Moab in die illo sub manu Israël : et quievit terra octoginta annis.

WLC ³⁰ וַתִּכָּנַ֤ע מוֹאָב֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא תַּ֖חַת יַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃

DRB ³¹ Et après lui, il y eut Shamgar, fils d'Anath ; et il frappa les Philistins, six cents hommes, avec un aiguillon à bœufs. Et lui aussi sauva Israël.

KJV ³¹ And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

VULC ³¹ Post hunc fuit Samgar filius Anath, qui percussit de Philisthiim sexcentos viros vomere : et ipse quoque defendit Israël.
