Juges 3KJV 1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

KJV 2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

KJV 3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
VULC 3 quinque satrapas Philisthinorum, omnemque Chananæum, et Sidonium, atque Hevæum, qui habitabat in monte Libano, de monte Baal Hermon usque ad introitum Emath.

KJV 4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

KJV 5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

WLC 5 וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יָשְׁב֖וּ בְּקֶ֣רֶב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י הַחִתִּ֤י וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י וְהַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃
KJV 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
VULC 6 et duxerunt uxores filias eorum, ipsique filias suas filiis eorum tradiderunt, et servierunt diis eorum.
WLC 6 וַיִּקְח֨וּ אֶת־ בְּנוֹתֵיהֶ֤ם לָהֶם֙ לְנָשִׁ֔ים וְאֶת־ בְּנוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם נָתְנ֣וּ לִבְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־ אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃
KJV 7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
VULC 7 Feceruntque malum in conspectu Domini, et obliti sunt Dei sui, servientes Baalim et Astaroth.
WLC 7 וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶת־ הָרַע֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּשְׁכְּח֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ אֶת־ הַבְּעָלִ֖ים וְאֶת־ הָאֲשֵׁרֽוֹת׃
KJV 8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.
VULC 8 Iratusque contra Israël Dominus, tradidit eos in manus Chusan Rasathaim regis Mesopotamiæ, servieruntque ei octo annis.
WLC 8 וַיִּֽחַר־ אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֗ם בְּיַד֙ כּוּשַׁ֣ן רִשְׁעָתַ֔יִם מֶ֖לֶךְ אֲרַ֣ם נַהֲרָ֑יִם וַיַּעַבְד֧וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־ כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה שָׁנִֽים׃
KJV 9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
VULC 9 Et clamaverunt ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem, et liberavit eos, Othoniel videlicet filium Cenez, fratrem Caleb minorem :
WLC 9 וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּ֨קֶם יְהוָ֥ה מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיּֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ם אֵ֚ת עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־ קְנַ֔ז אֲחִ֥י כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֥ן מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃
KJV 10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.
VULC 10 fuitque in eo spiritus Domini, et judicavit Israël. Egressusque est ad pugnam, et tradidit Dominus in manus ejus Chusan Rasathaim regem Syriæ, et oppressit eum.

KJV 11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
VULC 11 Quievitque terra quadraginta annis, et mortuus est Othoniel filius Cenez.
WLC 11 וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מָת עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־ קְנַֽז׃
KJV 12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.
VULC 12 Addiderunt autem filii Israël facere malum in conspectu Domini : qui confortavit adversum eos Eglon regem Moab, quia fecerunt malum in conspectu ejus.

KJV 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
VULC 13 Et copulavit ei filios Ammon, et Amalec : abiitque et percussit Israël, atque possedit urbem palmarum.
WLC 13 וַיֶּאֱסֹ֣ף אֵלָ֔יו אֶת־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן וַעֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּֽירְשׁ֖וּ אֶת־ עִ֥יר הַתְּמָרִֽים׃
KJV 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
VULC 14 Servieruntque filii Israël Eglon regi Moab decem et octo annis.
WLC 14 וַיַּעַבְד֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־ עֶגְל֣וֹן מֶֽלֶךְ־ מוֹאָ֔ב שְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃
KJV 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
VULC 15 Et postea clamaverunt ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem vocabulo Aod, filium Gera, filii Jemini, qui utraque manu pro dextera utebatur. Miseruntque filii Israël per illum munera Eglon regi Moab.
WLC 15 וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ אֶל־ יְהוָה֒ וַיָּקֶם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לָהֶ֜ם מוֹשִׁ֗יעַ אֶת־ אֵה֤וּד בֶּן־ גֵּרָא֙ בֶּן־ הַיְמִינִ֔י אִ֥ישׁ אִטֵּ֖ר יַד־ יְמִינ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׁלְח֨וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל בְּיָדוֹ֙ מִנְחָ֔ה לְעֶגְל֖וֹן מֶ֥לֶךְ מוֹאָֽב׃
KJV 16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
VULC 16 Qui fecit sibi gladium ancipitem, habentem in medio capulum longitudinis palmæ manus, et accinctus est eo subter sagum in dextro femore.
WLC 16 וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ אֵה֜וּד חֶ֗רֶב וְלָ֛הּ שְׁנֵ֥י פֵי֖וֹת גֹּ֣מֶד אָרְכָּ֑הּ וַיַּחְגֹּ֤ר אוֹתָהּ֙ מִתַּ֣חַת לְמַדָּ֔יו עַ֖ל יֶ֥רֶךְ יְמִינֽוֹ׃
KJV 17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
VULC 17 Obtulitque munera Eglon regi Moab. Erat autem Eglon crassus nimis.
WLC 17 וַיַּקְרֵב֙ אֶת־ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה לְעֶגְל֖וֹן מֶ֣לֶךְ מוֹאָ֑ב וְעֶגְל֕וֹן אִ֥ישׁ בָּרִ֖יא מְאֹֽד׃
KJV 18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
VULC 18 Cumque obtulisset ei munera, prosecutus est socios, qui cum eo venerant.
WLC 18 וַֽיְהִי֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר כִּלָּ֔ה לְהַקְרִ֖יב אֶת־ הַמִּנְחָ֑ה וַיְשַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם נֹשְׂאֵ֖י הַמִּנְחָֽה׃
KJV 19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
VULC 19 Et reversus de Galgalis, ubi erant idola, dixit ad regem : Verbum secretum habeo ad te, o rex. Et ille imperavit silentium : egressisque omnibus qui circa eum erant,

KJV 20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
VULC 20 ingressus est Aod ad eum : sedebat autem in æstivo cœnaculo solus : dixitque : Verbum Dei habeo ad te. Qui statim surrexit de throno.

KJV 21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
VULC 21 Extenditque Aod sinistram manum, et tulit sicam de dextro femore suo, infixitque eam in ventre ejus
WLC 21 וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אֵהוּד֙ אֶת־ יַ֣ד שְׂמֹאל֔וֹ וַיִּקַּח֙ אֶת־ הַחֶ֔רֶב מֵעַ֖ל יֶ֣רֶךְ יְמִינ֑וֹ וַיִּתְקָעֶ֖הָ בְּבִטְנֽוֹ׃
KJV 22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
VULC 22 tam valide, ut capulus sequeretur ferrum in vulnere, ac pinguissimo adipe stringeretur. Nec eduxit gladium, sed ita ut percusserat, reliquit in corpore : statimque per secreta naturæ alvi stercora proruperunt.

KJV 23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
VULC 23 Aod autem clausis diligentissime ostiis cœnaculi, et obfirmatis sera,
WLC 23 וַיֵּצֵ֥א אֵה֖וּד הַֽמִּסְדְּר֑וֹנָה וַיִּסְגֹּ֞ר דַּלְת֧וֹת הָעַלִיָּ֛ה בַּעֲד֖וֹ וְנָעָֽל׃
KJV 24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
VULC 24 per posticum egressus est. Servique regis ingressi viderunt clausas fores cœnaculi, atque dixerunt : Forsitan purgat alvum in æstivo cubiculo.
WLC 24 וְה֤וּא יָצָא֙ וַעֲבָדָ֣יו בָּ֔אוּ וַיִּרְא֕וּ וְהִנֵּ֛ה דַּלְת֥וֹת הָעֲלִיָּ֖ה נְעֻל֑וֹת וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אַ֣ךְ מֵסִ֥יךְ ה֛וּא אֶת־ רַגְלָ֖יו בַּחֲדַ֥ר הַמְּקֵרָֽה׃
KJV 25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
VULC 25 Expectantesque diu donec erubescerent, et videntes quod nullus aperiret, tulerunt clavem : et aperientes invenerunt dominum suum in terra jacentem mortuum.
WLC 25 וַיָּחִ֣ילוּ עַד־ בּ֔וֹשׁ וְהְנֵּ֛ה אֵינֶ֥נּוּ פֹתֵ֖חַ דַּלְת֣וֹת הָֽעֲלִיָּ֑ה וַיִּקְח֤וּ אֶת־ הַמַּפְתֵּ֙חַ֙ וַיִּפְתָּ֔חוּ וְהִנֵּה֙ אֲדֹ֣נֵיהֶ֔ם נֹפֵ֥ל אַ֖רְצָה מֵֽת׃
KJV 26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
VULC 26 Aod autem, dum illi turbarentur, effugit, et pertransiit locum idolorum, unde reversus fuerat. Venitque in Seirath :
WLC 26 וְאֵה֥וּד נִמְלַ֖ט עַ֣ד הִֽתְמַהְמְהָ֑ם וְהוּא֙ עָבַ֣ר אֶת־ הַפְּסִילִ֔ים וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט הַשְּׂעִירָֽתָה׃
KJV 27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
VULC 27 et statim insonuit buccina in monte Ephraim, descenderuntque cum eo filii Israël, ipso in fronte gradiente.
WLC 27 וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹא֔וֹ וַיִּתְקַ֥ע בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַיֵּרְד֨וּ עִמּ֧וֹ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִן־ הָהָ֖ר וְה֥וּא לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃
KJV 28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

WLC 28 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ רִדְפ֣וּ אַחֲרַ֔י כִּֽי־ נָתַ֨ן יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־ אֹיְבֵיכֶ֛ם אֶת־ מוֹאָ֖ב בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם וַיֵּרְד֣וּ אַחֲרָ֗יו וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ אֶת־ מַעְבְּר֤וֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ לְמוֹאָ֔ב וְלֹֽא־ נָתְנ֥וּ אִ֖ישׁ לַעֲבֹֽר׃
KJV 29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
VULC 29 sed percusserunt Moabitas in tempore illo, circiter decem millia, omnes robustos et fortes viros. Nullus eorum evadere potuit.
WLC 29 וַיַּכּ֨וּ אֶת־ מוֹאָ֜ב בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗יא כַּעֲשֶׂ֤רֶת אֲלָפִים֙ אִ֔ישׁ כָּל־ שָׁמֵ֖ן וְכָל־ אִ֣ישׁ חָ֑יִל וְלֹ֥א נִמְלַ֖ט אִֽישׁ׃
KJV 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
VULC 30 Humiliatusque est Moab in die illo sub manu Israël : et quievit terra octoginta annis.
WLC 30 וַתִּכָּנַ֤ע מוֹאָב֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא תַּ֖חַת יַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃
KJV 31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
VULC 31 Post hunc fuit Samgar filius Anath, qui percussit de Philisthiim sexcentos viros vomere : et ipse quoque defendit Israël.
