KJV ¹ And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

WLC ¹ וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם יְהוָ֛ה בְּיַד־ מִדְיָ֖ן שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃

KJV ² And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

S21 ² La domination des Madianites fut puissante contre Israël. Pour leur échapper, les Israélites se retiraient dans les ravins des montagnes, dans les grottes et sur les rochers fortifiés.

VULC ² et oppressi sunt valde ab eis. Feceruntque sibi antra et speluncas in montibus, et munitissima ad repugnandum loca.

WLC ² וַתָּ֥עָז יַד־ מִדְיָ֖ן עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִפְּנֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן עָשֽׂוּ לָהֶ֣ם ׀ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־ הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים וְאֶת־ הַמְּעָר֖וֹת וְאֶת־ הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃

KJV ³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

S21 ³ Quand Israël avait semé, les Madianites montaient avec Amalek et les nomades de l'est et marchaient contre lui.

VULC ³ Cumque sevisset Israël, ascendebat Madian et Amalec, ceterique orientalium nationum :

WLC ³ וְהָיָ֖ה אִם־ זָרַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעָלָ֨ה מִדְיָ֧ן וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק וּבְנֵי־ קֶ֖דֶם וְעָל֥וּ עָלָֽיו׃

KJV ⁴ And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

S21 ⁴ Ils campaient en face de lui, détruisaient les produits du pays jusque vers Gaza et ne laissaient en Israël ni vivres, ni brebis, ni bœufs, ni ânes.

VULC ⁴ et apud eos figentes tentoria, sicut erant in herbis cuncta vastabant usque ad introitum Gazæ : nihilque omnino ad vitam pertinens relinquebant in Israël, non oves, non boves, non asinos.

WLC ⁴ וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשְׁחִ֙יתוּ֙ אֶת־ יְב֣וּל הָאָ֔רֶץ עַד־ בּוֹאֲךָ֖ עַזָּ֑ה וְלֹֽא־ יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ מִֽחְיָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְשֶׂ֥ה וָשׁ֖וֹר וַחֲמֽוֹר׃

KJV ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

S21 ⁵ En effet, ils montaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, arrivant comme un essaim de sauterelles; il était impossible de les compter, eux et leurs chameaux, et ils venaient dans le pays pour le dévaster.

VULC ⁵ Ipsi enim et universi greges eorum veniebant cum tabernaculis suis, et instar locustarum universa complebant, innumera multitudo hominum et camelorum, quidquid tetigerant devastantes.

WLC ⁵ כִּ֡י הֵם֩ וּמִקְנֵיהֶ֨ם יַעֲל֜וּ וְאָהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם כְדֵֽי־ אַרְבֶּה֙ לָרֹ֔ב וְלָהֶ֥ם וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖ם אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֑ר וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ בָאָ֖רֶץ לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃

KJV ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

S21 ⁶ Israël fut plongé dans une grande misère à cause de Madian, et les Israélites crièrent à l'Eternel.

VULC ⁶ Humiliatusque est Israël valde in conspectu Madian.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּדַּ֧ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מְאֹ֖ד מִפְּנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן וַיִּזְעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ⁷ And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

S21 ⁷ Lorsque les Israélites crièrent à l'Eternel au sujet de Madian,

VULC ⁷ Et clamavit ad Dominum postulans auxilium contra Madianitas.

WLC ⁷ וַיְהִ֕י כִּֽי־ זָעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה עַ֖ל אֹד֥וֹת מִדְיָֽן׃

KJV ⁸ That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

S21 ⁸ l'Eternel leur envoya un prophète. Il leur dit: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Je vous ai fait sortir d'Egypte et quitter la maison d'esclavage.

VULC ⁸ Qui misit ad eos virum prophetam, et locutus est : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël : Ego vos feci conscendere de Ægypto, et eduxi vos de domo servitutis,

WLC ⁸ וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח יְהוָ֛ה אִ֥ישׁ נָבִ֖יא אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָהֶ֜ם כֹּה־ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה ׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָנֹכִ֞י הֶעֱלֵ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וָאֹצִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃

KJV ⁹ And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

S21 ⁹ Je vous ai délivrés de la domination des Egyptiens et de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient. Je les ai chassés devant vous et je vous ai donné leur pays.

VULC ⁹ et liberavi de manu Ægyptiorum, et omnium inimicorum qui affligebant vos : ejecique eos ad introitum vestrum, et tradidi vobis terram eorum.

WLC ⁹ וָאַצִּ֤ל אֶתְכֶם֙ מִיַּ֣ד מִצְרַ֔יִם וּמִיַּ֖ד כָּל־ לֹחֲצֵיכֶ֑ם וָאֲגָרֵ֤שׁ אוֹתָם֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וָאֶתְּנָ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ אַרְצָֽם׃

KJV ¹⁰ And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

S21 ¹⁰ Je vous ai dit: ‘Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu. Vous ne craindrez pas les dieux des Amoréens, même si vous habitez dans leur pays.' Mais vous ne m'avez pas écouté.»

VULC ¹⁰ Et dixi : Ego Dominus Deus vester : ne timeatis deos Amorrhæorum, in quorum terra habitatis. Et noluistis audire vocem meam.

KJV ¹¹ And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

S21 ¹¹ Puis l'ange de l'Eternel vint et il s'assit sous le térébinthe d'Ophra, qui appartenait à Joas, membre de la famille d'Abiézer. Son fils Gédéon battait du blé au pressoir pour le mettre à l'abri des Madianites.

VULC ¹¹ Venit autem angelus Domini, et sedit sub quercu, quæ erat in Ephra, et pertinebat ad Joas patrem familiæ Ezri. Cumque Gedeon filius ejus excuteret atque purgaret frumenta in torculari, ut fugeret Madian,

KJV ¹² And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

S21 ¹² L'ange de l'Eternel lui apparut et lui dit: «L'Eternel est avec toi, vaillant héros!»

VULC ¹² apparuit ei angelus Domini, et ait : Dominus tecum, virorum fortissime.

WLC ¹² וַיֵּרָ֥א אֵלָ֖יו מַלְּאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו יְהוָ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ גִּבּ֥וֹר הֶחָֽיִל׃

KJV ¹³ And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

S21 ¹³ Gédéon lui dit: «Ah! mon seigneur, si l'Eternel est avec nous, pourquoi tout cela nous est-il arrivé? Où sont tous ses actes merveilleux, ceux que nos pères nous racontent quand ils disent: ‘L'Eternel ne nous a-t-il pas fait sortir d'Egypte?' Maintenant l'Eternel nous abandonne et nous livre entre les mains de Madian!»

VULC ¹³ Dixitque ei Gedeon : Obsecro, mi domine, si Dominus nobiscum est, cur apprehenderunt nos hæc omnia ? ubi sunt mirabilia ejus, quæ narraverunt patres nostri, atque dixerunt : De Ægypto eduxit nos Dominus ? nunc autem dereliquit nos Dominus, et tradidit in manu Madian.

KJV ¹⁴ And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

S21 ¹⁴ L'Eternel se tourna vers lui et dit: «Va avec la force que tu as et délivre Israël de l'oppression de Madian. N'est-ce pas moi qui t'envoie?»

VULC ¹⁴ Respexitque ad eum Dominus, et ait : Vade in hac fortitudine tua, et liberabis Israël de manu Madian : scito quod miserim te.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיִּ֤פֶן אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֚ךְ בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ זֶ֔ה וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִכַּ֣ף מִדְיָ֑ן הֲלֹ֖א שְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃

KJV ¹⁵ And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

S21 ¹⁵ Gédéon lui dit: «Ah! mon seigneur, avec quoi délivrerai-je Israël? Mon clan est le plus faible de Manassé et je suis le plus petit dans la famille de mon père.»

VULC ¹⁵ Qui respondens ait : Obsecro, mi domine, in quo liberabo Israël ? ecce familia mea infima est in Manasse, et ego minimus in domo patris mei.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֔י בַּמָּ֥ה אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִנֵּ֤ה אַלְפִּי֙ הַדַּ֣ל בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה וְאָנֹכִ֥י הַצָּעִ֖יר בְּבֵ֥ית אָבִֽי׃

KJV ¹⁶ And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

S21 ¹⁶ L'Eternel répondit: «Mais je serai avec toi et tu battras les Madianites comme s'il s'agissait d'un seul homme.»

VULC ¹⁶ Dixitque ei Dominus : Ego ero tecum : et percuties Madian quasi unum virum.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אֶהְיֶ֖ה עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהִכִּיתָ֥ אֶת־ מִדְיָ֖ן כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָֽד׃

KJV ¹⁷ And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

S21 ¹⁷ Gédéon lui dit: «Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, donne-moi un signe pour montrer que c'est bien toi qui me parles.

VULC ¹⁷ Et ille : Si inveni, inquit, gratiam coram te, da mihi signum quod tu sis qui loqueris ad me :

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אִם־ נָ֛א מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ לִּי֙ א֔וֹת שָׁאַתָּ֖ה מְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמִּֽי׃

KJV ¹⁸ Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

S21 ¹⁸ Ne t'éloigne pas d'ici jusqu'à ce que je revienne auprès de toi, que j'apporte mon offrande et que je la dépose devant toi.» Et l'Eternel dit: «Je resterai jusqu'à ce que tu reviennes.»

VULC ¹⁸ nec recedas hinc, donec revertar ad te, portans sacrificium, et offerens tibi. Qui respondit : Ego præstolabor adventum tuum.

WLC ¹⁸ אַל־ נָ֨א תָמֻ֤שׁ מִזֶּה֙ עַד־ בֹּאִ֣י אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ אֶת־ מִנְחָתִ֔י וְהִנַּחְתִּ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אָנֹכִ֥י אֵשֵׁ֖ב עַ֥ד שׁוּבֶֽךָ׃

KJV ¹⁹ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

S21 ¹⁹ Gédéon entra chez lui, prépara un chevreau et fit des pains sans levain avec 22 litres de farine. Il mit la viande dans un panier et le jus dans un pot, les lui apporta sous le térébinthe et les présenta.

VULC ¹⁹ Ingressus est itaque Gedeon, et coxit hædum, et de farinæ modio azymos panes : carnesque ponens in canistro, et jus carnium mittens in ollam, tulit omnia sub quercu, et obtulit ei.

WLC ¹⁹ וְגִדְע֣וֹן בָּ֗א וַיַּ֤עַשׂ גְּדִֽי־ עִזִּים֙ וְאֵיפַת־ קֶ֣מַח מַצּ֔וֹת הַבָּשָׂר֙ שָׂ֣ם בַּסַּ֔ל וְהַמָּרַ֖ק שָׂ֣ם בַּפָּר֑וּר וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֵלָ֛יו אֶל־ תַּ֥חַת הָאֵלָ֖ה וַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃

KJV ²⁰ And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

S21 ²⁰ L'ange de Dieu lui dit: «Prends la viande et les pains sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher et verse le jus par-dessus.» C'est ce que fit Gédéon.

VULC ²⁰ Cui dixit angelus Domini : Tolle carnes et azymos panes, et pone supra petram illam, et jus desuper funde. Cumque fecisset ita,

WLC ²⁰ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים קַ֣ח אֶת־ הַבָּשָׂ֤ר וְאֶת־ הַמַּצּוֹת֙ וְהַנַּח֙ אֶל־ הַסֶּ֣לַע הַלָּ֔ז וְאֶת־ הַמָּרַ֖ק שְׁפ֑וֹךְ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ כֵּֽן׃

KJV ²¹ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

S21 ²¹ L'ange de l'Eternel avança le bâton qu'il avait à la main et en toucha la viande et les pains sans levain. Alors un feu s'éleva du rocher, un feu qui brûla la viande et les pains sans levain. Puis l'ange de l'Eternel disparut de la vue de Gédéon.

VULC ²¹ extendit angelus Domini summitatem virgæ, quam tenebat in manu, et tetigit carnes et panes azymos : ascenditque ignis de petra, et carnes azymosque panes consumpsit : angelus autem Domini evanuit ex oculis ejus.

WLC ²¹ וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ קְצֵ֤ה הַמִּשְׁעֶ֙נֶת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיִּגַּ֥ע בַּבָּשָׂ֖ר וּבַמַּצּ֑וֹת וַתַּ֨עַל הָאֵ֜שׁ מִן־ הַצּ֗וּר וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶת־ הַבָּשָׂר֙ וְאֶת־ הַמַּצּ֔וֹת וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה הָלַ֖ךְ מֵעֵינָֽיו׃

KJV ²² And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.

S21 ²² Comprenant que c'était l'ange de l'Eternel, Gédéon s'exclama: «Malheur à moi, Seigneur Eternel, car j'ai vu l'ange de l'Eternel face à face.»

VULC ²² Vidensque Gedeon quod esset angelus Domini, ait : Heu mi Domine Deus : quia vidi angelum Domini facie ad faciem.

WLC ²² וַיַּ֣רְא גִּדְע֔וֹן כִּֽי־ מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה ה֑וּא וַיֹּ֣אמֶר גִּדְע֗וֹן אֲהָהּ֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֤ן רָאִ֙יתִי֙ מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה פָּנִ֖ים אֶל־ פָּנִֽים׃

KJV ²³ And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

S21 ²³ Et l'Eternel lui dit: «Reste en paix, n'aie pas peur, tu ne mourras pas.»

VULC ²³ Dixitque ei Dominus : Pax tecum : ne timeas, non morieris.

WLC ²³ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֧וֹ יְהוָ֛ה שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֖ אַל־ תִּירָ֑א לֹ֖א תָּמֽוּת׃

KJV ²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

S21 ²⁴ Gédéon construisit là un autel à l'Eternel, et il l'appela «L'Eternel paix». Il existe aujourd'hui encore à Ophra, qui appartenait à la famille d'Abiézer.

VULC ²⁴ Ædificavit ergo ibi Gedeon altare Domino, vocavitque illud, Domini pax, usque in præsentem diem. Cumque adhuc esset in Ephra, quæ est familiæ Ezri,

WLC ²⁴ וַיִּבֶן֩ שָׁ֨ם גִּדְע֤וֹן מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַיִּקְרָא־ ל֥וֹ יְהוָ֖ה שָׁל֑וֹם עַ֚ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה עוֹדֶ֕נּוּ בְּעָפְרָ֖ת אֲבִ֥י הָעֶזְרִֽי׃

KJV ²⁵ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

S21 ²⁵ Au cours de la même nuit, l'Eternel dit à Gédéon: «Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, ainsi qu'un deuxième taureau de 7 ans. Démolis l'autel de Baal qui appartient à ton père et abats le poteau sacré qui se trouve dessus.

VULC ²⁵ nocte illa dixit Dominus ad eum : Tolle taurum patris tui, et alterum taurum annorum septem, destruesque aram Baal, quæ est patris tui, et nemus, quod circa aram est, succide.

WLC ²⁵ וַיְהִי֮ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַהוּא֒ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ יְהוָ֗ה קַ֤ח אֶת־ פַּר־ הַשּׁוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֔יךָ וּפַ֥ר הַשֵּׁנִ֖י שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים וְהָרַסְתָּ֗ אֶת־ מִזְבַּ֤ח הַבַּ֙עַל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֔יךָ וְאֶת־ הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָ֖יו תִּכְרֹֽת׃

KJV ²⁶ And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

S21 ²⁶ Tu construiras ensuite et tu disposeras, sur le haut de ce rocher, un autel consacré à l'Eternel, ton Dieu. Tu prendras le deuxième taureau et tu l'offriras en holocauste en utilisant le bois de l'idole que tu auras abattue.»

VULC ²⁶ Et ædificabis altare Domino Deo tuo in summitate petræ hujus, super quam ante sacrificium posuisti : tollesque taurum secundum, et offeres holocaustum super struem lignorum, quæ de nemore succideris.

WLC ²⁶ וּבָנִ֨יתָ מִזְבֵּ֜חַ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ עַ֣ל רֹ֧אשׁ הַמָּע֛וֹז הַזֶּ֖ה בַּמַּֽעֲרָכָ֑ה וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַפָּ֣ר הַשֵּׁנִ֔י וְהַעֲלִ֣יתָ עוֹלָ֔ה בַּעֲצֵ֥י הָאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּכְרֹֽת׃

KJV ²⁷ Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

S21 ²⁷ Gédéon prit dix de ses serviteurs et fit ce que l'Eternel avait dit. Toutefois, comme il avait peur de la famille de son père et des habitants de la ville, il l'accomplit de nuit, et non de jour.

VULC ²⁷ Assumptis ergo Gedeon decem viris de servis suis, fecit sicut præceperat ei Dominus. Timens autem domum patris sui, et homines illius civitatis, per diem noluit id facere, sed omnia nocte complevit.

WLC ²⁷ וַיִּקַּ֨ח גִּדְע֜וֹן עֲשָׂרָ֤ה אֲנָשִׁים֙ מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלָ֖יו יְהוָ֑ה וַיְהִ֡י כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יָרֵא֩ אֶת־ בֵּ֨ית אָבִ֜יו וְאֶת־ אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָעִ֛יר מֵעֲשׂ֥וֹת יוֹמָ֖ם וַיַּ֥עַשׂ לָֽיְלָה׃

KJV ²⁸ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

S21 ²⁸ Lorsque les habitants de la ville se levèrent de bon matin, ils constatèrent que l'autel de Baal avait été démoli, le poteau sacré placé dessus abattu, et le deuxième taureau offert en holocauste sur le nouvel autel qui avait été construit.

VULC ²⁸ Cumque surrexissent viri oppidi ejus mane, viderunt destructam aram Baal, lucumque succisum, et taurum alterum impositum super altare, quod tunc ædificatum erat.

WLC ²⁸ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הָעִיר֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּ֤ה נֻתַּץ֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַבַּ֔עַל וְהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָ֖יו כֹּרָ֑תָה וְאֵת֙ הַפָּ֣ר הַשֵּׁנִ֔י הֹֽעֲלָ֔ה עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ הַבָּנֽוּי׃

KJV ²⁹ And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

S21 ²⁹ Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: «Qui a fait cela?» et ils s'informèrent et firent des recherches. On leur dit: «C'est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui a fait cela.»

VULC ²⁹ Dixeruntque ad invicem : Quis hoc fecit ? Cumque perquirerent auctorem facti, dictum est : Gedeon filius Joas fecit hæc omnia.

WLC ²⁹ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ רֵעֵ֔הוּ מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ וַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ גִּדְעוֹן֙ בֶּן־ יוֹאָ֔שׁ עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

KJV ³⁰ Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

S21 ³⁰ Alors les habitants de la ville dirent à Joas: «Fais sortir ton fils de chez toi et qu'il meure, car il a démoli l'autel de Baal et abattu le poteau sacré qui se trouvait dessus.»

VULC ³⁰ Et dixerunt ad Joas : Produc filium tuum huc, ut moriatur : quia destruxit aram Baal, et succidit nemus.

WLC ³⁰ וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הָעִיר֙ אֶל־ יוֹאָ֔שׁ הוֹצֵ֥א אֶת־ בִּנְךָ֖ וְיָמֹ֑ת כִּ֤י נָתַץ֙ אֶת־ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַבַּ֔עַל וְכִ֥י כָרַ֖ת הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָֽיו׃

KJV ³¹ And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

S21 ³¹ Joas répondit à tous ceux qui se présentèrent à lui: «Est-ce à vous de défendre Baal? Est-ce à vous de venir à son secours? Toute personne qui défendra Baal mourra avant le matin. Si Baal est un dieu, qu'il se défende lui-même, puisqu'on a démoli son autel.»

VULC ³¹ Quibus ille respondit : Numquid ultores estis Baal, ut pugnetis pro eo ? qui adversarius est ejus, moriatur antequam lux crastina veniat : si deus est, vindicet se de eo, qui suffodit aram ejus.

WLC ³¹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יוֹאָ֡שׁ לְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁר־ עָמְד֨וּ עָלָ֜יו הַאַתֶּ֣ם ׀ תְּרִיב֣וּן לַבַּ֗עַל אִם־ אַתֶּם֙ תּוֹשִׁיע֣וּן אוֹת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרִ֥יב ל֛וֹ יוּמַ֖ת עַד־ הַבֹּ֑קֶר אִם־ אֱלֹהִ֥ים הוּא֙ יָ֣רֶב ל֔וֹ כִּ֥י נָתַ֖ץ אֶֽת־ מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃

KJV ³² Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

S21 ³² Ce jour-là on donna à Gédéon le nom de Jerubbaal en disant: «Que Baal se défende contre lui, puisqu'il a démoli son autel.»

KJV ³³ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

KJV ³⁴ But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.

S21 ³⁴ Gédéon fut revêtu de l'Esprit de l'Eternel. Il sonna de la trompette et la famille d'Abiézer fut convoquée pour marcher à sa suite.

KJV ³⁵ And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

KJV ³⁶ And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

KJV ³⁷ Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

S21 ³⁷ je vais mettre une peau de mouton avec sa laine dans l'aire de battage. Si la peau seule se couvre de rosée et que tout le terrain reste sec, je saurai que tu délivreras Israël par mon intermédiaire, comme tu l'as dit.»

VULC ³⁷ ponam hoc vellus lanæ in area : si ros in solo vellere fuerit, et in omni terra siccitas, sciam quod per manum meam, sicut locutus es, liberabis Israël.

WLC ³⁷ הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י מַצִּ֛יג אֶת־ גִּזַּ֥ת הַצֶּ֖מֶר בַּגֹּ֑רֶן אִ֡ם טַל֩ יִהְיֶ֨ה עַֽל־ הַגִּזָּ֜ה לְבַדָּ֗הּ וְעַל־ כָּל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ חֹ֔רֶב וְיָדַעְתִּ֗י כִּֽי־ תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃

KJV ³⁸ And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

S21 ³⁸ Et cela se passa ainsi. Le lendemain, il se leva de bonne heure, pressa la peau de mouton et en fit sortir la rosée. Elle donna une coupe pleine d'eau.

VULC ³⁸ Factumque est ita. Et de nocte consurgens expresso vellere, concham rore implevit.

WLC ³⁸ וַיְהִי־ כֵ֕ן וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיָּ֖זַר אֶת־ הַגִּזָּ֑ה וַיִּ֤מֶץ טַל֙ מִן־ הַגִּזָּ֔ה מְל֥וֹא הַסֵּ֖פֶל מָֽיִם׃

KJV ³⁹ And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

S21 ³⁹ Gédéon dit à Dieu: «Que ta colère ne s'enflamme pas contre moi, et je ne parlerai plus que cette fois. Je voudrais seulement faire encore une épreuve avec la peau de mouton: que la peau seule reste sèche et que tout le terrain se couvre de rosée.»

VULC ³⁹ Dixitque rursus ad Deum : Ne irascatur furor tuus contra me si adhuc semel tentavero, signum quærens in vellere. Oro ut solum vellus siccum sit, et omnis terra rore madens.

WLC ³⁹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר גִּדְעוֹן֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים אַל־ יִ֤חַר אַפְּךָ֙ בִּ֔י וַאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה אַ֣ךְ הַפָּ֑עַם אֲנַסֶּ֤ה נָּא־ רַק־ הַפַּ֙עַם֙ בַּגִּזָּ֔ה יְהִי־ נָ֨א חֹ֤רֶב אֶל־ הַגִּזָּה֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ וְעַל־ כָּל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ יִֽהְיֶה־ טָּֽל׃

KJV ⁴⁰ And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

S21 ⁴⁰ Et Dieu agit ainsi cette nuit-là: la peau de mouton seule resta sèche et tout le terrain se couvrit de rosée.

VULC ⁴⁰ Fecitque Deus nocte illa ut postulaverat : et fuit siccitas in solo vellere, et ros in omni terra.

WLC ⁴⁰ וַיַּ֧עַשׂ אֱלֹהִ֛ים כֵּ֖ן בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֑וּא וַיְהִי־ חֹ֤רֶב אֶל־ הַגִּזָּה֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ וְעַל־ כָּל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ הָ֥יָה טָֽל׃
