KJV ¹ Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

KJV ² And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

MAR ² Or l'Eternel dit à Gédeon : Le peuple qui est avec toi est en trop grand nombre, pour que je livre Madian en leur main, de peur qu'Israël ne se glorifie contre moi, en disant : Ma main m'a délivré.

VULC ² Dixitque Dominus ad Gedeon : Multus tecum est populus, nec tradetur Madian in manus ejus : ne glorietur contra me Israël, et dicat : Meis viribus liberatus sum.

KJV ³ Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

VULC ³ Loquere ad populum, et cunctis audientibus prædica : Qui formidolosus et timidus est, revertatur. Recesseruntque de monte Galaad, et reversi sunt de populo viginti duo millia virorum, et tantum decem millia remanserunt.

KJV ⁴ And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

MAR ⁴ Et l'Eternel dit à Gédeon : Il y a encore du peuple en trop grand nombre ; fais-les descendre vers l'eau, et là je te les choisirai ; et celui dont je te dirai, celui-ci ira avec toi, il ira avec toi ; et celui duquel je te dirai, celui-ci n'ira point avec toi ; il n'y ira point.

VULC ⁴ Dixitque Dominus ad Gedeon : Adhuc populus multus est : duc eos ad aquas et ibi probabo illos : et de quo dixero tibi ut tecum vadat, ipse pergat ; quem ire prohibuero, revertatur.

KJV ⁵ So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

KJV ⁶ And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

WLC ⁶ וַיְהִ֗י מִסְפַּ֞ר הַֽמֲלַקְקִ֤ים בְּיָדָם֙ אֶל־ פִּיהֶ֔ם שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וְכֹל֙ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם כָּרְע֥וּ עַל־ בִּרְכֵיהֶ֖ם לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מָֽיִם׃

KJV ⁷ And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

MAR ⁷ Alors l'Eternel dit à Gédeon : Je vous délivrerai par le moyen de ces trois cents hommes qui ont lapé [l'eau], et je livrerai Madian en ta main. Que tout le peuple donc s'en aille, chacun en son lieu.

VULC ⁷ Et ait Dominus ad Gedeon : In trecentis viris qui lambuerunt aquas, liberabo vos, et tradam in manu tua Madian : omnis autem reliqua multitudo revertatur in locum suum.

KJV ⁸ So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

MAR ⁸ Ainsi le peuple prit en sa main des provisions, et leurs trompettes. Et Gédeon renvoya tous les hommes d'Israël chacun en sa tente, et retint les trois cents hommes. Or le camp de Madian était au-dessous, dans la vallée.

VULC ⁸ Sumptis itaque pro numero cibariis et tubis, omnem reliquam multitudinem abire præcepit ad tabernacula sua : et ipse cum trecentis viris se certamini dedit. Castra autem Madian erant subter in valle.

KJV ⁹ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.

MAR ⁹ Et il arriva cette nuit-là, que l'Eternel lui dit : Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je l'ai livré en ta main.

KJV ¹⁰ But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:

KJV ¹¹ And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.

MAR ¹¹ Et tu entendras ce qu'ils diront, et tes mains seront fortifiées, puis tu descendras au camp. Il descendit donc avec Purah son serviteur, jusqu'au premier corps de garde du camp.

KJV ¹² And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

MAR ¹² Or Madian, et Hamalec, et tous les Orientaux, étaient répandus dans la vallée comme des sauterelles, tant il y en avait, et leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre, comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, tant il y en avait.

KJV ¹³ And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.

MAR ¹³ Gédeon donc y étant arrivé, voilà, un homme récitait à son compagnon un songe, et lui disait : Voici, j'ai songé un songe ; il me semblait qu'un gâteau de pain d'orge se roulait vers le camp de Madian, et qu'étant venu jusqu'aux tentes, il les a frappées, de sorte qu'elles en sont tombées, et il les a renversées, [en roulant] du haut [de la montagne], et elles sont tombées.

KJV ¹⁴ And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.

MAR ¹⁴ Alors son compagnon répondit, et dit : Cela n'est autre chose que l'épée de Gédeon, fils de Joas, homme d'Israël. Dieu a livré Madian et tout ce camp en sa main.

VULC ¹⁴ Respondit is, cui loquebatur : Non est hoc aliud, nisi gladius Gedeonis filii Joas viri Israëlitæ : tradidit enim Dominus in manus ejus Madian, et omnia castra ejus.

KJV ¹⁵ And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

MAR ¹⁵ Et quand Gédeon eut entendu le récit du songe, et son interprétation, il se prosterna ; et étant retourné au camp d'Israël, il dit : Levez-vous, car l'Eternel a livré le camp de Madian en vos mains.

KJV ¹⁶ And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

MAR ¹⁶ Puis il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois bandes, et leur donna à chacun des trompettes à la main, et des cruches vides, et des flambeaux dans les cruches.

VULC ¹⁶ Divisitque trecentos viros in tres partes, et dedit tubas in manibus eorum, lagenasque vacuas, ac lampades in medio lagenarum.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיַּ֛חַץ אֶת־ שְׁלֹשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת הָאִ֖ישׁ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֑ים וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שׁוֹפָר֤וֹת בְּיַד־ כֻּלָּם֙ וְכַדִּ֣ים רֵקִ֔ים וְלַפִּדִ֖ים בְּת֥וֹךְ הַכַּדִּֽים׃

KJV ¹⁷ And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

MAR ¹⁷ Et il leur dit : Prenez garde à moi et faites comme je ferai ; lorsque je serai arrivé au bout du camp, vous ferez comme je ferai.

VULC ¹⁷ Et dixit ad eos : Quod me facere videritis, hoc facite : ingrediar partem castrorum, et quod fecero, sectamini.

KJV ¹⁸ When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

KJV ¹⁹ So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

KJV ²⁰ And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

KJV ²¹ And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

VULC ²¹ stantes singuli in loco suo per circuitum castrorum hostilium. Omnia itaque castra turbata sunt, et vociferantes ululantesque fugerunt :

WLC ²¹ וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ תַּחְתָּ֔יו סָבִ֖יב לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיָּ֧רָץ כָּל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֛ה וַיָּרִ֖יעוּ

KJV ²² And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.

MAR ²² Car comme les trois cents hommes sonnaient des trompettes, l'Eternel tourna l'épée d'un chacun contre son compagnon, même par tout le camp. Et l'armée s'enfuit jusqu'à Beth-sittah, vers Tserera, jusqu'au bord d'Abelmeholah, vers Tabbat.

VULC ²² et nihilominus insistebant trecenti viri buccinis personantes. Immisitque Dominus gladium omnibus castris, et mutua se cæde truncabant,

WLC ²² וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ֮ שְׁלֹשׁ־ מֵא֣וֹת הַשּׁוֹפָרוֹת֒ וַיָּ֣שֶׂם יְהוָ֗ה אֵ֣ת חֶ֥רֶב אִ֛ישׁ בְּרֵעֵ֖הוּ וּבְכָל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיָּ֨נָס הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֜ה עַד־ בֵּ֤ית הַשִּׁטָּה֙ צְֽרֵרָ֔תָה עַ֛ד שְׂפַת־ אָבֵ֥ל מְחוֹלָ֖ה עַל־ טַבָּֽת׃

KJV ²³ And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.

MAR ²³ Et les hommes d'Israël, [savoir] de Nephthali et d'Aser, et de tout Manassé s'assemblèrent, et poursuivirent Madian.

VULC ²³ fugientes usque ad Bethsetta, et crepidinem Abelmehula in Tebbath. Conclamantes autem viri Israël de Nephthali, et Aser, et omni Manasse, persequebantur Madian.

WLC ²³ וַיִּצָּעֵ֧ק אִֽישׁ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִנַּפְתָּלִ֥י וּמִן־ אָשֵׁ֖ר וּמִן־ כָּל־ מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י מִדְיָֽן׃

KJV ²⁴ And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.

MAR ²⁴ Alors Gédeon envoya des messagers par toute la montagne d'Ephraïm, pour leur dire : Descendez pour aller à la rencontre de Madian, et saisissez-vous les premiers des eaux du Jourdain jusqu'à Beth-bara. Les hommes d'Ephraïm donc s'étant assemblés, se saisirent des eaux du Jourdain jusqu'à Beth-bara.

VULC ²⁴ Misitque Gedeon nuntios in omnem montem Ephraim, dicens : Descendite in occursum Madian, et occupate aquas usque Bethbera atque Jordanem. Clamavitque omnis Ephraim, et præoccupavit aquas atque Jordanem usque Bethbera.

WLC ²⁴ וּמַלְאָכִ֡ים שָׁלַ֣ח גִּדְעוֹן֩ בְּכָל־ הַ֨ר אֶפְרַ֜יִם לֵאמֹ֗ר רְד֞וּ לִקְרַ֤את מִדְיָן֙ וְלִכְד֤וּ לָהֶם֙ אֶת־ הַמַּ֔יִם עַ֛ד בֵּ֥ית בָּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וַיִּצָּעֵ֞ק כָּל־ אִ֤ישׁ אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וַיִּלְכְּד֣וּ אֶת־ הַמַּ֔יִם עַ֛ד בֵּ֥ית בָּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

KJV ²⁵ And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

VULC ²⁵ Apprehensosque duos viros Madian, Oreb et Zeb, interfecit Oreb in petra Oreb, Zeb vero in torculari Zeb. Et persecuti sunt Madian, capita Oreb et Zeb portantes ad Gedeon trans fluenta Jordanis.

WLC ²⁵ וַֽיִּלְכְּד֡וּ שְׁנֵֽי־ שָׂרֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן אֶת־ עֹרֵ֣ב וְאֶת־ זְאֵ֗ב וַיַּהַרְג֨וּ אֶת־ עוֹרֵ֤ב בְּצוּר־ עוֹרֵב֙ וְאֶת־ זְאֵב֙ הָרְג֣וּ בְיֶֽקֶב־ זְאֵ֔ב וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אֶל־ מִדְיָ֑ן וְרֹאשׁ־ עֹרֵ֣ב וּזְאֵ֔ב הֵבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶל־ גִּדְע֔וֹן מֵעֵ֖בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
