KJV 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

KJV 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
S21 3 Nous avons prié notre Dieu et avons mis une garde en place pour nous défendre jour et nuit contre leurs attaques.
VULC 3 Sed et Tobias Ammanites, proximus ejus, ait : Ædificent : si ascenderit vulpes, transiliet murum eorum lapideum.
KJV 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
S21 4 Toutefois, les Judéens disaient:
«La force des porteurs de fardeaux va faiblissant
et il y a tellement de décombres
que nous ne parviendrons pas
à reconstruire la muraille.»
VULC 4 Audi, Deus noster, quia facti sumus despectui : converte opprobrium super caput eorum, et da eos in despectionem in terra captivitatis.
KJV 5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.
S21 5 Quant à nos adversaires, ils disaient: «Ils ne sauront et ne verront rien jusqu'à ce que nous arrivions au milieu d'eux. Nous les tuerons alors et nous ferons ainsi cesser le travail.»
VULC 5 Ne operias iniquitatem eorum, et peccatum eorum coram facie tua non deleatur, quia irriserunt ædificantes.
KJV 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
S21 6 Or, les Juifs qui habitaient près d'eux sont venus dix fois nous avertir, de tous leurs lieux de domicile: «Il faut que vous reveniez chez nous!»
VULC 6 Itaque ædificavimus murum, et conjunximus totum usque ad partem dimidiam : et provocatum est cor populi ad operandum.
KJV 7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
S21 7 J'ai donc posté le peuple par familles, tous avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs, en contrebas derrière la muraille, aux endroits abrités.
VULC 7 Factum est autem, cum audisset Sanaballat, et Tobias, et Arabes, et Ammanitæ, et Azotii, quod obducta esset cicatrix muri Jerusalem, et quod cœpissent interrupta concludi, irati sunt nimis.
KJV 8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
S21 8 Après avoir tout inspecté, je me suis levé pour dire aux nobles, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple: «N'ayez pas peur d'eux! Souvenez-vous du Seigneur grand et redoutable et combattez pour vos frères, vos fils et vos filles, vos femmes et vos maisons!»
VULC 8 Et congregati sunt omnes pariter ut venirent, et pugnarent contra Jerusalem, et molirentur insidias.
KJV 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
S21 9 Lorsque nos ennemis ont appris que nous étions au courant de tout, Dieu a réduit leur projet à néant et nous sommes tous retournés à la muraille, chacun à son travail.

KJV 10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

KJV 11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
S21 11 Ceux qui construisaient la muraille et ceux qui portaient ou chargeaient les fardeaux travaillaient d'une main et tenaient une arme de jet de l'autre.
VULC 11 Et dixerunt hostes nostri : Nesciant, et ignorent donec veniamus in medium eorum, et interficiamus eos, et cessare faciamus opus.
KJV 12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

KJV 13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
S21 13 J'ai alors dit aux nobles, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple: «Le travail est immense et le chantier étendu, si bien que nous sommes dispersés sur la muraille, éloignés les uns des autres.
VULC 13 statui in loco post murum per circuitum populum in ordinem cum gladiis suis, et lanceis, et arcubus.
KJV 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
S21 14 Au son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous près de nous, à l'endroit où vous l'entendrez sonner, et notre Dieu combattra pour nous.»
VULC 14 Et perspexi atque surrexi : et aio ad optimates et magistratus, et ad reliquam partem vulgi : Nolite timere a facie eorum : Domini magni et terribilis mementote, et pugnate pro fratribus vestris, filiis vestris, et filiabus vestris, et uxoribus vestris, et domibus vestris.
KJV 15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
S21 15 Nous avons donc poursuivi notre travail, la moitié des hommes gardant la lance à la main depuis le lever de l'aurore jusqu'à l'apparition des étoiles.

KJV 16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
S21 16 A la même époque, j'ai encore dit au peuple: «Que chacun passe la nuit à l'intérieur de Jérusalem avec son serviteur: montons la garde pendant la nuit et travaillons pendant la journée!»
VULC 16 Et factum est a die illa, media pars juvenum eorum faciebat opus, et media parata erat ad bellum : et lanceæ, et scuta, et arcus, et loricæ, et principes post eos in omni domo Juda.
KJV 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
S21 17 Ainsi, nous ne quittions pas nos vêtements, ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes serviteurs, ni les hommes de garde qui me suivaient; chacun gardait son arme, même pour se laver.

KJV 18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

KJV 19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

KJV 20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
VULC 20 in loco quocumque audieritis clangorem tubæ, illuc concurrite ad nos : Deus noster pugnabit pro nobis.
KJV 21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

KJV 22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
VULC 22 In tempore quoque illo dixi populo : Unusquisque cum puero suo maneat in medio Jerusalem, et sint nobis vices per noctem et diem ad operandum.
KJV 23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
