KJV ¹ Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

KJV ² The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

KJV ⁴ Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:

S21 ⁴ ce pays que l'Eternel a frappé devant l'assemblée d'Israël, est un endroit approprié pour des troupeaux. Or, tes serviteurs ont des troupeaux.»

VULC ⁴ terra, quam percussit Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, regio uberrima est ad pastum animalium : et nos servi tui habemus jumenta plurima,

WLC ⁴ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ לִפְנֵי֙ עֲדַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶ֥רֶץ מִקְנֶ֖ה הִ֑וא וְלַֽעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ מִקְנֶֽה׃

KJV ⁵ Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

S21 ⁵ Ils ajoutèrent: «Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que la possession de ce pays soit accordée à tes serviteurs. Ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain.»

VULC ⁵ precamurque si invenimus gratiam coram te, ut des nobis famulis tuis eam in possessionem, nec facias nos transire Jordanem.

KJV ⁶ And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

S21 ⁶ Moïse répondit aux Gadites et aux Rubénites: «Vos frères iraient à la guerre pendant que vous, vous resteriez ici?

KJV ⁷ And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?

S21 ⁷ Pourquoi voulez-vous décourager les Israélites de passer dans le pays que l'Eternel leur donne?

VULC ⁷ cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël, ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus ?

WLC ⁷ וְלָ֣מָּה אֶת־ לֵ֖ב בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מֵֽעֲבֹר֙ אֶל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ⁸ Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.

S21 ⁸ C'est ce que vos pères ont fait quand je les ai envoyés de Kadès-Barnéa examiner le pays.

VULC ⁸ Nonne ita egerunt patres vestri, quando misi de Cadesbarne ad explorandam terram ?

WLC ⁸ כֹּ֥ה עָשׂ֖וּ אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֑ם בְּשָׁלְחִ֥י אֹתָ֛ם מִקָּדֵ֥שׁ בַּרְנֵ֖עַ לִרְא֥וֹת אֶת־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV ⁹ For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

KJV ¹⁰ And the LORD's anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,

KJV ¹¹ Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

KJV ¹² Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.

KJV ¹³ And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

S21 ¹³ La colère de l'Eternel s'est enflammée contre Israël et il les a fait errer dans le désert pendant 40 ans, jusqu'à la disparition de toute la génération qui avait fait le mal à ses yeux.

WLC ¹³ וַיִּֽחַר־ אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְנִעֵם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר אַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה עַד־ תֹּם֙ כָּל־ הַדּ֔וֹר הָעֹשֶׂ֥ה הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁴ And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.

S21 ¹⁴ Et voici que vous prenez la place de vos pères, en dignes rejetons d'hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter encore la colère de l'Eternel contre Israël.

VULC ¹⁴ Et ecce, inquit, vos surrexistis pro patribus vestris, incrementa et alumni hominum peccatorum, ut augeretis furorem Domini contra Israël.

WLC ¹⁴ וְהִנֵּ֣ה קַמְתֶּ֗ם תַּ֚חַת אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם תַּרְבּ֖וּת אֲנָשִׁ֣ים חַטָּאִ֑ים לִסְפּ֣וֹת ע֗וֹד עַ֛ל חֲר֥וֹן אַף־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁵ For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

S21 ¹⁵ En effet, si vous vous détournez de lui, il continuera de laisser Israël dans le désert et vous provoquerez ainsi la perte de tout ce peuple.»

VULC ¹⁵ Quod si nolueritis sequi eum, in solitudine populum derelinquet, et vos causa eritis necis omnium.

WLC ¹⁵ כִּ֤י תְשׁוּבֻן֙ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו וְיָסַ֣ף ע֔וֹד לְהַנִּיח֖וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְשִֽׁחַתֶּ֖ם לְכָל־ הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּֽה׃

KJV ¹⁶ And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:

VULC ¹⁶ At illi prope accedentes, dixerunt : Caulas ovium fabricabimus, et stabula jumentorum, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas :

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּגְּשׁ֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ וַ֣יֹּאמְר֔וּ גִּדְרֹ֥ת צֹ֛אן נִבְנֶ֥ה לְמִקְנֵ֖נוּ פֹּ֑ה וְעָרִ֖ים לְטַפֵּֽנוּ׃

KJV ¹⁷ But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

S21 ¹⁷ Puis nous-mêmes, nous nous empresserons de prendre les armes pour marcher en tête des Israélites jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons fait entrer chez eux. Quant à nos petits enfants, ils resteront dans les villes fortifiées à cause des habitants du pays.

VULC ¹⁷ nos autem ipsi armati et accincti pergemus ad prælium ante filios Israël, donec introducamus eos ad loca sua. Parvuli nostri, et quidquid habere possumus, erunt in urbibus muratis, propter habitatorum insidias.

WLC ¹⁷ וַאֲנַ֜חְנוּ נֵחָלֵ֣ץ חֻשִׁ֗ים לִפְנֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִם־ הֲבִֽיאֹנֻ֖ם אֶל־ מְקוֹמָ֑ם וְיָשַׁ֤ב טַפֵּ֙נוּ֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י הַמִּבְצָ֔ר מִפְּנֵ֖י יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV ¹⁸ We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.

VULC ¹⁸ Non revertemur in domos nostras, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam :

WLC ¹⁸ לֹ֥א נָשׁ֖וּב אֶל־ בָּתֵּ֑ינוּ עַ֗ד הִתְנַחֵל֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִ֖ישׁ נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁹ For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

S21 ¹⁹ et nous ne posséderons rien avec eux de l'autre côté du Jourdain ni plus loin, puisque nous aurons notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, à l'est.»

KJV ²⁰ And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,

WLC ²⁰ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה אִֽם־ תַּעֲשׂ֖וּן אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה אִם־ תֵּחָֽלְצ֛וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

KJV ²¹ And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,

S21 ²¹ si tous vos hommes équipés passent le Jourdain devant l'Eternel jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis loin de lui

VULC ²¹ et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos,

WLC ²¹ וְעָבַ֨ר לָכֶ֧ם כָּל־ חָל֛וּץ אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה עַ֧ד הוֹרִישׁ֛וֹ אֶת־ אֹיְבָ֖יו מִפָּנָֽיו׃

KJV ²² And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

S21 ²² et si vous ne revenez qu'une fois le pays soumis à l'Eternel, vous serez alors sans reproche vis-à-vis de l'Eternel et vis-à-vis d'Israël, et cette région-ci sera votre propriété devant l'Eternel.

VULC ²² et subjiciatur ei omnis terra : tunc eritis inculpabiles apud Dominum et apud Israël, et obtinebitis regiones, quas vultis, coram Domino.

WLC ²² וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֨ה הָאָ֜רֶץ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ וְאַחַ֣ר תָּשֻׁ֔בוּ וִהְיִיתֶ֧ם נְקִיִּ֛ים מֵיְהוָ֖ה וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ֠הָיְתָה הָאָ֨רֶץ הַזֹּ֥את לָכֶ֛ם לַאֲחֻזָּ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ²³ But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

S21 ²³ Mais si vous n'agissez pas ainsi, vous péchez contre l'Eternel et, sachez-le, votre péché vous atteindra.

VULC ²³ Sin autem quod dicitis, non feceritis, nulli dubium est quin peccetis in Deum : et scitote quoniam peccatum vestrum apprehendet vos.

WLC ²³ וְאִם־ לֹ֤א תַעֲשׂוּן֙ כֵּ֔ן הִנֵּ֥ה חֲטָאתֶ֖ם לַיהוָ֑ה וּדְעוּ֙ חַטַּאתְכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּמְצָ֖א אֶתְכֶֽם׃

KJV ²⁴ Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

S21 ²⁴ Construisez des villes pour vos petits enfants et des enclos pour vos troupeaux, et faites ce que vous avez déclaré.»

VULC ²⁴ Ædificate ergo urbes parvulis vestris, et caulas, et stabula ovibus ac jumentis : et quod polliciti estis, implete.

WLC ²⁴ בְּנֽוּ־ לָכֶ֤ם עָרִים֙ לְטַפְּכֶ֔ם וּגְדֵרֹ֖ת לְצֹנַאֲכֶ֑ם וְהַיֹּצֵ֥א מִפִּיכֶ֖ם תַּעֲשֽׂוּ׃

KJV ²⁵ And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

KJV ²⁶ Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:

S21 ²⁶ Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail resteront dans les villes de Galaad,

KJV ²⁷ But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord saith.

S21 ²⁷ tandis que tes serviteurs, tous équipés pour la guerre, iront combattre devant l'Eternel conformément à la parole de mon seigneur.»

VULC ²⁷ nos autem famuli tui omnes expediti pergemus ad bellum, sicut tu, domine, loqueris.

WLC ²⁷ וַעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ יַֽעַבְר֜וּ כָּל־ חֲל֥וּץ צָבָ֛א לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲדֹנִ֖י דֹּבֵֽר׃

KJV ²⁸ So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

S21 ²⁸ Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet au prêtre Eléazar, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs de famille dans les tribus des Israélites.

VULC ²⁸ Præcepit ergo Moyses Eleazaro sacerdoti, et Josue filio Nun, et principibus familiarum per tribus Israël, et dixit ad eos :

KJV ²⁹ And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

S21 ²⁹ Il leur dit: «Si les Gadites et les Rubénites passent le Jourdain avec vous, tous équipés pour combattre devant l'Eternel, et que le pays vous soit soumis, vous leur donnerez en propriété la région de Galaad.

VULC ²⁹ Si transierint filii Gad et filii Ruben vobiscum Jordanem omnes armati ad bellum coram Domino, et vobis fuerit terra subjecta, date eis Galaad in possessionem.

WLC ²⁹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֲלֵהֶ֗ם אִם־ יַעַבְר֣וּ בְנֵי־ גָ֣ד וּבְנֵי־ רְאוּבֵ֣ן ׀ אִ֠תְּכֶם אֶֽת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֞ן כָּל־ חָל֤וּץ לַמִּלְחָמָה֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם לָהֶ֛ם אֶת־ אֶ֥רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֖ד לַאֲחֻזָּֽה׃

KJV ³⁰ But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

S21 ³⁰ Mais s'ils ne marchent pas tout équipés avec vous, ils s'établiront parmi vous dans le pays de Canaan.»

KJV ³¹ And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

S21 ³¹ Les Gadites et les Rubénites répondirent: «Nous ferons ce que l'Eternel a dit à tes serviteurs.

WLC ³¹ וַיַּֽעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי־ גָ֛ד וּבְנֵ֥י רְאוּבֵ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־ עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ כֵּ֥ן נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

KJV ³² We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be our's.

S21 ³² Nous passerons tout équipés devant l'Eternel au pays de Canaan, mais nous posséderons notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain.»

KJV ³³ And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

KJV ³⁹ And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.

KJV ⁴² And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
