KJV ¹ The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

WLC ¹ דִּ֭בְרֵי לְמוּאֵ֣ל מֶ֑לֶךְ מַ֝שָּׂ֗א אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ יִסְּרַ֥תּוּ אִמּֽוֹ׃

BAN ² Que te dirai-je, mon fils ? Que te dirai-je, fils de mes entrailles ?
Que te dirai-je, fils de mes voeux ?

KJV ² What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

WLC ² מַה־ בְּ֭רִי וּמַֽה־ בַּר־ בִּטְנִ֑י וּ֝מֶה בַּר־ נְדָרָֽי׃

BAN ³ Ne donne pas ta vigueur aux femmes !
Ne suis pas celles qui perdent les rois !

KJV ³ Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

WLC ³ אַל־ תִּתֵּ֣ן לַנָּשִׁ֣ים חֵילֶ֑ךָ וּ֝דְרָכֶ֗יךָ לַֽמְח֥וֹת מְלָכִֽין׃

BAN ⁴ Ce n'est pas aux rois, Lémuel,
Ce n'est pas aux rois de boire du vin,
Ni aux princes [de boire] de la cervoise ;

KJV ⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

WLC ⁴ אַ֤ל לַֽמְלָכִ֨ים ׀ לְֽמוֹאֵ֗ל אַ֣ל לַֽמְלָכִ֣ים שְׁתוֹ־ יָ֑יִן וּ֝לְרוֹזְנִ֗ים שֵׁכָֽר׃

BAN ⁵ De peur qu'en buvant ils n'oublient la loi
Et qu'ils ne faussent le droit de tous les misérables.

KJV ⁵ Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

WLC ⁵ פֶּן־ יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח מְחֻקָּ֑ק וִֽ֝ישַׁנֶּה דִּ֣ין כָּל־ בְּנֵי־ עֹֽנִי׃

BAN ⁶ Donnez de la cervoise à qui va périr,
Du vin à qui a l'amertume dans l'âme.

KJV ⁶ Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

WLC ⁶ תְּנוּ־ שֵׁכָ֣ר לְאוֹבֵ֑ד וְ֝יַיִן לְמָ֣רֵי נָֽפֶשׁ׃

BAN ⁷ Qu'il boive et qu'il oublie sa pauvreté,
Qu'il ne se souvienne plus de ses peines !

KJV ⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

WLC ⁷ יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח רִישׁ֑וֹ וַ֝עֲמָל֗וֹ לֹ֣א יִזְכָּר־ עֽוֹד׃

BAN ⁸ Ouvre la bouche en faveur du muet
Et pour faire droit à tous ceux qui risquent de disparaître.

KJV ⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

WLC ⁸ פְּתַח־ פִּ֥יךָ לְאִלֵּ֑ם אֶל־ דִּ֝֗ין כָּל־ בְּנֵ֥י חֲלֽוֹף׃

BAN ⁹ Ouvre la bouche, juge avec justice,
Fais droit au malheureux et à l'indigent.

KJV ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

WLC ⁹ פְּתַח־ פִּ֥יךָ שְׁפָט־ צֶ֑דֶק וְ֝דִ֗ין עָנִ֥י וְאֶבְיֽוֹן׃

BAN ¹⁰ Aleph
Une femme vaillante, qui la trouvera ?
Sa valeur surpasse de beaucoup celle du corail.

KJV ¹⁰ Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

WLC ¹⁰ אֵֽשֶׁת־ חַ֭יִל מִ֣י יִמְצָ֑א וְרָחֹ֖ק מִפְּנִינִ֣ים מִכְרָֽהּ׃

BAN ¹¹ Beth
Le coeur de son mari s'assure en elle,
Et il ne manquera pas de butin.

KJV ¹¹ The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

WLC ¹¹ בָּ֣טַח בָּ֭הּ לֵ֣ב בַּעְלָ֑הּ וְ֝שָׁלָ֗ל לֹ֣א יֶחְסָֽר׃

BAN ¹² Guimel
Elle lui fait du bien et non du mal,
Tous les jours de sa vie.

KJV ¹² She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

WLC ¹² גְּמָלַ֣תְהוּ ט֣וֹב וְלֹא־ רָ֑ע כֹּ֝֗ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּֽיה׃

BAN ¹³ Daleth
Elle se pourvoit de laine et de lin
Et travaille d'une main joyeuse.

KJV ¹³ She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

WLC ¹³ דָּ֭רְשָׁה צֶ֣מֶר וּפִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַ֝תַּ֗עַשׂ בְּחֵ֣פֶץ כַּפֶּֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹⁴ Hé
Elle est comme les navires marchands ;
Elle fait venir sa subsistance de loin.

KJV ¹⁴ She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

WLC ¹⁴ הָ֭יְתָה כָּאֳנִיּ֣וֹת סוֹחֵ֑ר מִ֝מֶּרְחָ֗ק תָּבִ֥יא לַחְמָֽהּ׃

BAN ¹⁵ Vav
Elle se lève quand il fait encore nuit ;
Elle distribue la nourriture à sa maison et la tâche à ses servantes.

KJV ¹⁵ She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

WLC ¹⁵ וַתָּ֤קָם ׀ בְּע֬וֹד לַ֗יְלָה וַתִּתֵּ֣ן טֶ֣רֶף לְבֵיתָ֑הּ וְ֝חֹ֗ק לְנַעֲרֹתֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹⁶ Zaïn
Elle songe à un champ et elle l'acquiert ;
Avec le produit de son travail elle plante une vigne.

KJV ¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

WLC ¹⁶ זָמְמָ֣ה שָׂ֭דֶה וַתִּקָּחֵ֑הוּ מִפְּרִ֥י כַ֝פֶּ֗יהָ כָּֽרֶם׃

BAN ¹⁷ Heth
Elle ceint ses reins de force
Et elle exerce la vigueur de ses bras.

KJV ¹⁷ She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

WLC ¹⁷ חָֽגְרָ֣ה בְע֣וֹז מָתְנֶ֑יהָ וַ֝תְּאַמֵּ֗ץ זְרֹעוֹתֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹⁸ Teth
Elle voit que ce qu'elle gagne est bon ;
Sa lampe ne s'éteint point durant la nuit.

KJV ¹⁸ She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

WLC ¹⁸ טָ֭עֲמָה כִּי־ ט֣וֹב סַחְרָ֑הּ לֹֽא־ יִכְבֶּ֖ה נֵרָֽהּ׃

BAN ¹⁹ Iod
Elle met la main à la quenouille,
Et ses doigts manient le fuseau.

KJV ¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

WLC ¹⁹ יָ֭דֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָ֣ה בַכִּישׁ֑וֹר וְ֝כַפֶּ֗יהָ תָּ֣מְכוּ פָֽלֶךְ׃

BAN ²⁰ Caph
Elle ouvre ses mains au malheureux
Et les tend à l'indigent.

KJV ²⁰ She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

WLC ²⁰ כַּ֭פָּהּ פָּרְשָׂ֣ה לֶעָנִ֑י וְ֝יָדֶ֗יהָ שִׁלְּחָ֥ה לָֽאֶבְיֽוֹן׃

BAN ²¹ Lamed
Elle ne craint point la neige pour sa maison,
Car tous les siens sont vêtus de cramoisi.

KJV ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

WLC ²¹ לֹא־ תִירָ֣א לְבֵיתָ֣הּ מִשָּׁ֑לֶג כִּ֥י כָל־ בֵּ֝יתָ֗הּ לָבֻ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃

BAN ²² Mem
Elle se fait des coussins,
Elle a des vêtements de fin lin et de pourpre.

KJV ²² She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

WLC ²² מַרְבַדִּ֥ים עָֽשְׂתָה־ לָּ֑הּ שֵׁ֖שׁ וְאַרְגָּמָ֣ן לְבוּשָֽׁהּ׃

BAN ²³ Nun
Son mari est considéré aux portes,
Lorsqu'il siège parmi les Anciens du pays.

KJV ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

WLC ²³ נוֹדָ֣ע בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים בַּעְלָ֑הּ בְּ֝שִׁבְתּ֗וֹ עִם־ זִקְנֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ²⁴ Samech
Elle fait des tuniques et les vend ;
Elle livre des ceintures au Cananéen.

KJV ²⁴ She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

WLC ²⁴ סָדִ֣ין עָ֭שְׂתָה וַתִּמְכֹּ֑ר וַ֝חֲג֗וֹר נָתְנָ֥ה לַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽי׃

BAN ²⁵ Aïn
La force et la splendeur, voilà son vêtement,
Et elle se rit du lendemain.

KJV ²⁵ Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

WLC ²⁵ עֹז־ וְהָדָ֥ר לְבוּשָׁ֑הּ וַ֝תִּשְׂחַ֗ק לְי֣וֹם אַחֲרֽוֹן׃

BAN ²⁶ Pé
Elle ouvre sa bouche avec sagesse,
Et une instruction aimable est sur ses lèvres.

KJV ²⁶ She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

WLC ²⁶ פִּ֭יהָ פָּתְחָ֣ה בְחָכְמָ֑ה וְתֽוֹרַת־ חֶ֝֗סֶד עַל־ לְשׁוֹנָֽהּ׃

BAN ²⁷ Tdsadé
Elle surveille la marche de sa maison
Et ne mange pas le pain de la paresse.

KJV ²⁷ She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

WLC ²⁷ צ֭וֹפִיָּה הֲלִיכ֣וֹת בֵּיתָ֑הּ וְלֶ֥חֶם עַ֝צְל֗וּת לֹ֣א תֹאכֵֽל׃

BAN ²⁸ Koph
Ses fils se lèvent et la disent heureuse ;
Son mari aussi, et il la loue :

KJV ²⁸ Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

WLC ²⁸ קָ֣מוּ בָ֭נֶיהָ וַֽיְאַשְּׁר֑וּהָ בַּ֝עְלָ֗הּ וַֽיְהַֽלְלָהּ׃

BAN ²⁹ Resch
Des filles en grand nombre ont été vaillantes ;
Mais toi, tu les surpasses toutes !

KJV ²⁹ Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

WLC ²⁹ רַבּ֣וֹת בָּ֭נוֹת עָ֣שׂוּ חָ֑יִל וְ֝אַ֗תְּ עָלִ֥ית עַל־ כֻּלָּֽנָה׃

BAN ³⁰ Schin
La grâce est trompeuse, et la beauté, vaine ;
La femme qui craint l'Eternel est celle qui sera louée !

KJV ³⁰ Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

WLC ³⁰ שֶׁ֣קֶר הַ֭חֵן וְהֶ֣בֶל הַיֹּ֑פִי אִשָּׁ֥ה יִרְאַת־ יְ֝הוָ֗ה הִ֣יא תִתְהַלָּֽל׃

BAN ³¹ Thav
Donnez-lui du fruit de ses mains,
Et qu'aux portes, ses oeuvres la louent !

KJV ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

WLC ³¹ תְּנוּ־ לָ֭הּ מִפְּרִ֣י יָדֶ֑יהָ וִֽיהַלְל֖וּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִ֣ים מַעֲשֶֽׂיהָ׃
