BAN ¹ Que dirons-nous donc qu'Abraham, notre ancêtre, a obtenu selon la chair ?

BAN ² En effet, si Abraham a été justifié par les oeuvres, il a sujet de se glorifier, mais non devant Dieu.

KJV ² For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

TR1550 ² εἰ γὰρ ἀβραὰμ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ἔχει καύχημα ἀλλ᾽ οὐ πρὸς τὸν θεόν

BAN ³ Car que dit l'Ecriture ? Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice.

KJV ³ For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

TR1550 ³ τί γὰρ ἡ γραφὴ λέγει ἐπίστευσεν δὲ ἀβραὰμ τῷ θεῷ καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην

BAN ⁴ Or, à celui qui travaille, le salaire n'est pas compté comme une grâce, mais comme une chose due ;

KJV ⁴ Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

TR1550 ⁴ τῷ δὲ ἐργαζομένῳ ὁ μισθὸς οὐ λογίζεται κατὰ χάριν ἀλλὰ κατὰ τό ὀφείλημα

BAN ⁵ tandis que, à celui qui ne travaille point, mais qui croit en Celui qui justifie l'impie, sa foi lui est imputée à justice.

KJV ⁵ But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

TR1550 ⁵ τῷ δὲ μὴ ἐργαζομένῳ πιστεύοντι δὲ ἐπὶ τὸν δικαιοῦντα τὸν ἀσεβῆ λογίζεται ἡ πίστις αὐτοῦ εἰς δικαιοσύνην

BAN ⁶ C'est aussi de cette manière que David célèbre le bonheur de l'homme à qui Dieu impute la justice sans les oeuvres :

KJV ⁶ Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

TR1550 ⁶ καθάπερ καὶ δαβὶδ λέγει τὸν μακαρισμὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ᾧ ὁ θεὸς λογίζεται δικαιοσύνην χωρὶς ἔργων

BAN ⁷ Heureux ceux dont les iniquités ont été pardonnées et dont les péchés ont été couverts !

KJV ⁷ Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

TR1550 ⁷ μακάριοι ὧν ἀφέθησαν αἱ ἀνομίαι καὶ ὧν ἐπεκαλύφθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι

BAN ⁸ Heureux l'homme à qui le Seigneur n'imputera point le péché.

KJV ⁸ Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

TR1550 ⁸ μακάριος ἀνὴρ ᾧ οὗ μὴ λογίσηται κύριος ἁμαρτίαν

BAN ⁹ Cette déclaration de bonheur ne s'applique-t-elle donc qu'aux circoncis, ou aussi aux incirconcis ? Nous disons en effet : à Abraham la foi fut imputée à justice.

KJV ⁹ Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

TR1550 ⁹ ὁ μακαρισμὸς οὖν οὗτος ἐπὶ τὴν περιτομὴν ἢ καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ἀκροβυστίαν λέγομεν γάρ ὅτι ἐλογίσθη τῷ ἀβραὰμ ἡ πίστις εἰς δικαιοσύνην

BAN ¹⁰ Comment donc lui fut-elle imputée ? quand il était dans la circoncision, ou dans l'incirconcision ? Non dans la circoncision, mais dans l'incirconcision.

KJV ¹⁰ How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

TR1550 ¹⁰ πῶς οὖν ἐλογίσθη ἐν περιτομῇ ὄντι ἢ ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ οὐκ ἐν περιτομῇ ἀλλ᾽ ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ

BAN ¹¹ Et il reçut le signe de la circoncision comme un sceau de cette justice de la foi qu'il possédait dans l'incirconcision, afin qu'il fût le père de tous ceux qui croient sans être circoncis, pour que la justice leur soit imputée,

KJV ¹¹ And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

BAN ¹² et le père des circoncis, de ceux qui ne sont pas seulement circoncis, mais qui marchent aussi sur les traces de la foi que notre père Abraham a eue, étant dans l'incirconcision.

KJV ¹² And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

BAN ¹³ En effet, ce n'est pas par une loi que la promesse d'être héritier du monde a été faite à Abraham ou à sa postérité, mais c'est par la justice de la foi.

KJV ¹³ For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

BAN ¹⁴ Car si ce sont ceux qui relèvent de la loi qui sont héritiers, la foi est rendue vaine et la promesse est annulée ;

KJV ¹⁴ For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

TR1550 ¹⁴ εἰ γὰρ οἱ ἐκ νόμου κληρονόμοι κεκένωται ἡ πίστις καὶ κατήργηται ἡ ἐπαγγελία

BAN ¹⁵ car la loi produit la colère ; mais où il n'y a point de loi, il n'y a pas non plus de transgression.

KJV ¹⁵ Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

BAN ¹⁶ Voilà pourquoi c'est par la foi qu'on devient héritier, afin que ce soit par grâce, pour que la promesse soit assurée à toute la postérité d'Abraham, non seulement à celle qui relève de la loi, mais aussi à celle qui est de la foi d'Abraham, lequel est le père de nous tous,

BAN ¹⁷ selon qu'il est écrit : Je t'ai établi père de beaucoup de nations, devant Dieu en qui il a cru, qui vivifie les morts et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont point comme si elles étaient.

KJV ¹⁷ (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

BAN ¹⁸ Espérant contre toute espérance, il a cru qu'il deviendrait père de beaucoup de nations, selon ce qui lui avait été dit : Telle sera ta postérité.

KJV ¹⁸ Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

BAN ¹⁹ Et sans faiblir en la foi, il considéra son corps épuisé, âgé qu'il était d'environ cent ans, et l'épuisement du sein de Sarah :

KJV ¹⁹ And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

BAN ²⁰ mais à l'égard de la promesse de Dieu, il ne douta point par incrédulité, mais il fut fortifié par la foi, donnant gloire à Dieu,

KJV ²⁰ He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

TR1550 ²⁰ εἰς δὲ τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ διεκρίθη τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ ἀλλ᾽ ἐνεδυναμώθη τῇ πίστει δοὺς δόξαν τῷ θεῷ

BAN ²¹ et étant pleinement convaincu que ce qu'il a promis, il est puissant aussi pour l'accomplir.

KJV ²¹ And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

TR1550 ²¹ καὶ πληροφορηθεὶς ὅτι ὃ ἐπήγγελται δυνατός ἐστιν καὶ ποιῆσαι

BAN ²⁵ lequel a été livré pour nos fautes et est ressuscité pour notre justification.

KJV ²⁵ Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
