¹ Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.
² And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.
³ And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:
⁴ And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
⁵ Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
⁶ And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.
⁷ Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
⁸ Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.
⁹ And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
¹⁰ Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
¹¹ And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:
¹² And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
¹³ So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
¹⁴ And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
¹⁵ And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
¹⁶ And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
¹⁷ And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
¹⁸ Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
¹⁹ And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
²⁰ And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
²¹ And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
²² And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

¹ Boaz monta à la porte, et s'y arrêta. Or voici, celui qui avait droit de rachat, et dont Boaz avait parlé, vint à passer. Boaz lui dit: Approche, reste ici, toi un tel. Et il s'approcha, et s'arrêta.
² Boaz prit alors dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville, et il dit: Asseyez-vous ici. Et ils s'assirent.
³ Puis il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat: Naomi, revenue du pays de Moab, a vendu la pièce de terre qui appartenait à notre frère Élimélec.
⁴ J'ai cru devoir t'en informer, et te dire: Acquiers-la, en présence des habitants et en présence des anciens de mon peuple. Si tu veux racheter, rachète ; mais si tu ne veux pas, déclare-le-moi, afin que je le sache. Car il n'y a personne avant toi qui ait le droit de rachat, et je l'ai après toi. Et il répondit: je rachèterai.
⁵ Boaz dit: Le jour où tu acquerras le champ de la main de Naomi, tu l'acquerras en même temps de Ruth la Moabite, femme du défunt, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage.
⁶ Et celui qui avait le droit de rachat répondit: Je ne puis pas racheter pour mon compte, crainte de détruire mon héritage ; prends pour toi mon droit de rachat, car je ne puis pas racheter.
⁷ Autrefois en Israël, pour valider une affaire quelconque relative à un rachat ou à un échange, l'un ôtait son soulier et le donnait à l'autre: cela servait de témoignage en Israël.
⁸ Celui qui avait le droit de rachat dit donc à Boaz: Acquiers pour ton compte ! Et il ôta son soulier.
⁹ Alors Boaz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple: Vous êtes témoins aujourd'hui que j'ai acquis de la main de Naomi tout ce qui appartenait à Élimélec, à Kiljon et à Machlon,
¹⁰ et que je me suis également acquis pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Machlon, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage, et afin que le nom du défunt ne soit point retranché d'entre ses frères et de la porte de son lieu. Vous en êtes témoins aujourd'hui !
¹¹ Tout le peuple qui était à la porte et les anciens dirent: Nous en sommes témoins ! Que l'Éternel rende la femme qui entre dans ta maison semblable à Rachel et à Léa, qui toutes les deux ont bâti la maison d'Israël ! Manifeste ta force dans Éphrata, et fais-toi un nom dans Bethléhem !
¹² Puisse la postérité que l'Éternel te donnera par cette jeune femme rendre ta maison semblable à la maison de Pérets, qui fut enfanté à Juda par Tamar !
¹³ Boaz prit Ruth, qui devint sa femme, et il alla vers elle. L'Éternel permit à Ruth de concevoir, et elle enfanta un fils.
¹⁴ Les femmes dirent à Naomi: Béni soit l'Éternel, qui ne t'a point laissé manquer aujourd'hui d'un homme ayant droit de rachat, et dont le nom sera célébré en Israël !
¹⁵ Cet enfant restaurera ton âme, et sera le soutien de ta vieillesse ; car ta belle-fille, qui t'aime, l'a enfanté, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils.
¹⁶ Naomi prit l'enfant et le mit sur son sein, et elle fut sa garde.
¹⁷ Les voisines lui donnèrent un nom, en disant: Un fils est né à Naomi ! Et elles l'appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d'Isaï père de David.
¹⁸ Voici la postérité de Pérets.
¹⁹ Pérets engendra Hetsron ; Hetsron engendra Ram ; Ram engendra Amminadab ;
²⁰ Amminadab engendra Nachschon ; Nachschon engendra Salmon ;
²¹ Salmon engendra Boaz ; Boaz engendra Obed ;
²² Obed engendra Isaï ; et Isaï engendra David.

¹ Ascendit ergo Booz ad portam, et sedit ibi. Cumque vidisset propinquum præterire, de quo prius sermo habitus est, dixit ad eum : Declina paulisper, et sede hic : vocans eum nomine suo. Qui divertit, et sedit.
² Tollens autem Booz decem viros de senioribus civitatis, dixit ad eos : Sedete hic.
³ Quibus sedentibus, locutus est ad propinquum : Partem agri fratris nostri Elimelech vendet Noëmi, quæ reversa est de regione Moabitide :
⁴ quod audire te volui, et tibi dicere coram cunctis sedentibus, et majoribus natu de populo meo. Si vis possidere jure propinquitatis, eme, et posside : sin autem displicet tibi, hoc ipsum indica mihi, ut sciam quid facere debeam : nullus enim est propinquus, excepto te, qui prior es, et me, qui secundus sum. At ille respondit : Ego agrum emam.
⁵ Cui dixit Booz : Quando emeris agrum de manu mulieris, Ruth quoque Moabitidem, quæ uxor defuncti fuit, debes accipere : ut suscites nomen propinqui tui in hæreditate sua.
⁶ Qui respondit : Cedo juri propinquitatis : neque enim posteritatem familiæ meæ delere debeo : tu meo utere privilegio, quo me libenter carere profiteor.
⁷ Hic autem erat mos antiquitus in Israël inter propinquos, ut siquando alter alteri suo juri cedebat, ut esset firma concessio, solvebat homo calceamentum suum, et dabat proximo suo : hoc erat testimonium cessionis in Israël.
⁸ Dixit ergo propinquo suo Booz : Tolle calceamentum tuum. Quod statim solvit de pede suo.
⁹ At ille majoribus natu, et universo populo : Testes vos, inquit, estis hodie, quod possederim omnia quæ fuerunt Elimelech, et Chelion, et Mahalon, tradente Noëmi ;
¹⁰ et Ruth Moabitidem, uxorem Mahalon, in conjugium sumpserim, ut suscitem nomen defuncti in hæreditate sua, ne vocabulum ejus de familia sua ac fratribus et populo deleatur. Vos, inquam, hujus rei testes estis.
¹¹ Respondit omnis populus, qui erat in porta, et majores natu : Nos testes sumus : faciat Dominus hanc mulierem, quæ ingreditur domum tuam, sicut Rachel et Liam, quæ ædificaverunt domum Israël : ut sit exemplum virtutis in Ephratha, et habeat celebre nomen in Bethlehem :

¹⁵ et habeas qui consoletur animam tuam, et enutriat senectutem : de nuru enim tua natus est, quæ te diligit, et multo tibi melior est, quam si septem haberes filios.
¹⁶ Susceptumque Noëmi puerum posuit in sinu suo, et nutricis ac gerulæ fungebatur officio.
¹⁷ Vicinæ autem mulieris congratulantes ei, et dicentes : Natus est filius Noëmi : vocaverunt nomen ejus Obed : hic est pater Isai, patris David.
¹⁸ Hæ sunt generationes Phares : Phares genuit Esron,
¹⁹ Esron genuit Aram, Aram genuit Aminadab,
