¹ Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
² And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
³ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
⁴ Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
⁵ That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.
⁶ Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
⁷ For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
⁸ And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
⁹ And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
¹⁰ And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;
¹¹ That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.
¹² The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
¹³ Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
¹⁴ Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.
¹⁵ If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
¹⁶ Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
¹⁷ Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
¹⁸ Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:
²⁰ Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
²¹ For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
²² Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
²³ And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

L'Eternel ne se laisse pas consulter par les idolâtres

¹ Quelques-uns des anciens d'Israël vinrent auprès de moi et s'assirent devant moi.
² Et la parole de l'Eternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:
³ Fils de l'homme, ces gens-là portent leurs idoles dans leur cœur, et ils attachent les regards sur ce qui les a fait tomber dans l'iniquité. Me laisserai-je consulter par eux?
⁴ C'est pourquoi parle-leur, et dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Eternel: Tout homme de la maison d'Israël qui porte ses idoles dans son cœur, et qui attache les regards sur ce qui l'a fait tomber dans son iniquité, s'il vient s'adresser au prophète, moi, l'Eternel, je lui répondrai, malgré la multitude de ses idoles,
⁵ afin de saisir dans leur propre cœur ceux de la maison d'Israël qui se sont éloignés de moi avec toutes leurs idoles.
⁶ C'est pourquoi dis à la maison d'Israël: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Eternel: Revenez, et détournez-vous de vos idoles, détournez les regards de toutes vos abominations!
⁷ Car tout homme de la maison d'Israël, ou des étrangers séjournant en Israël, qui s'est éloigné de moi, qui porte ses idoles dans son cœur, et qui attache les regards sur ce qui l'a fait tomber dans son iniquité, s'il vient s'adresser au prophète pour me consulter par lui, moi, l'Eternel, je lui répondrai moi-même.
⁸ Je tournerai ma face contre cet homme, je ferai de lui un signe et un sujet de sarcasme, et je l'exterminerai du milieu de mon peuple. Et vous saurez que je suis l'Eternel.
⁹ Si le prophète se laisse séduire, s'il prononce une parole, c'est moi, l'Eternel, qui aurai séduit ce prophète; j'étendrai ma main contre lui, et je le détruirai du milieu de mon peuple d'Israël.
¹⁰ Ils porteront ainsi la peine de leur iniquité; la peine du prophète sera comme la peine de celui qui consulte,
¹¹ afin que la maison d'Israël ne s'égare plus loin de moi, et qu'elle ne se souille plus par toutes ses transgressions. Alors ils seront mon peuple, et je serai leur Dieu, dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel.

L'exemple de trois hommes justes

¹² La parole de l'Eternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:
¹³ Fils de l'homme, si un pays péchait contre moi en se livrant à l'infidélité, et si j'étendais ma main sur lui, si je brisais pour lui le bâton du pain, si je lui envoyais la famine, si j'en exterminais les hommes et les bêtes,
¹⁴ et qu'il y ait au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, Noé, Daniel et Job, ils sauveraient leur âme par leur justice, dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel.
¹⁵ Si je faisais parcourir le pays par des bêtes féroces qui le dépeupleraient, s'il devenait un désert où personne ne passerait à cause de ces bêtes,
¹⁶ et qu'il y ait au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, eux seuls seraient sauvés, et le pays deviendrait un désert.
¹⁷ Ou si j'amenais l'épée contre ce pays, si je disais: Que l'épée parcoure le pays! si j'en exterminais les hommes et les bêtes,
¹⁸ et qu'il y ait au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, mais eux seuls seraient sauvés.
¹⁹ Ou si j'envoyais la peste dans ce pays, si je répandais contre lui ma fureur par la mortalité, pour en exterminer les hommes et les bêtes,
²⁰ et qu'il y ait au milieu de lui Noé, Daniel et Job, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, mais ils sauveraient leur âme par leur justice.
²¹ Oui, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Eternel: Quoique j'envoie contre Jérusalem mes quatre châtiments terribles, l'épée, la famine, les bêtes féroces et la peste, pour en exterminer les hommes et les bêtes,
²² il y aura néanmoins un reste qui échappera, qui en sortira, des fils et des filles. Voici, ils arriveront auprès de vous; vous verrez leur conduite et leurs actions, et vous vous consolerez du malheur que je fais venir sur Jérusalem, de tout ce que je fais venir sur elle.
²³ Ils vous consoleront, quand vous verrez leur conduite et leurs actions; et vous reconnaîtrez que ce n'est pas sans raison que je fais tout ce que je lui fais, dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel.

¹ Et venerunt ad me viri seniorum Israël, et sederunt coram me.
² Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens :
³ Fili hominis, viri isti posuerunt immunditias suas in cordibus suis, et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerunt contra faciem suam : numquid interrogatus respondebo eis ?
⁴ Propter hoc loquere eis, et dices ad eos : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Homo, homo de domo Israël, qui posuerit immunditias suas in corde suo, et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerit contra faciem suam, et venerit ad prophetam interrogans per eum me : ego Dominus respondebo ei in multitudine immunditiarum suarum,
⁵ ut capiatur domus Israël in corde suo, quo recesserunt a me in cunctis idolis suis.

⁷ Quia homo, homo de domo Israël, et de proselytis quicumque advena fuerit in Israël, si alienatus fuerit a me, et posuerit idola sua in corde suo, et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerit contra faciem suam, et venerit ad prophetam ut interroget per eum me : ego Dominus respondebo ei per me :
⁸ et ponam faciem meam super hominem illum, et faciam eum in exemplum et in proverbium, et disperdam eum de medio populi mei : et scietis quia ego Dominus.
⁹ Et propheta cum erraverit, et locutus fuerit verbum, ego Dominus decepi prophetam illum, et extendam manum meam super illum, et delebo eum de medio populi mei Israël.
¹⁰ Et portabunt iniquitatem suam : juxta iniquitatem interrogantis, sic iniquitas prophetæ erit :
¹¹ ut non erret ultra domus Israël a me, neque polluatur in universis prævaricationibus suis : sed sint mihi in populum, et ego sim eis in Deum, ait Dominus exercituum.

¹⁴ Et si fuerint tres viri isti in medio ejus, Noë, Daniel, et Job, ipsi justitia sua liberabunt animas suas, ait Dominus exercituum.
¹⁵ Quod si et bestias pessimas induxero super terram ut vastem eam, et fuerit invia, eo quod non sit pertransiens propter bestias :
¹⁶ tres viri isti si fuerint in ea, vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quia nec filios nec filias liberabunt, sed ipsi soli liberabuntur, terra autem desolabitur.
¹⁷ Vel si gladium induxero super terram illam, et dixero gladio : Transi per terram : et interfecero de ea hominem et jumentum,
¹⁸ et tres viri isti fuerint in medio ejus : vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, non liberabunt filios neque filias, sed ipsi soli liberabuntur.
¹⁹ Si autem et pestilentiam immisero super terram illam, et effudero indignationem meam super eam in sanguine, ut auferam ex ea hominem et jumentum,
²⁰ et Noë, et Daniel, et Job fuerint in medio ejus : vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quia filium et filiam non liberabunt, sed ipsi justitia sua liberabunt animas suas.
