²⁰ Et ils vinrent vers le roi, dans la cour, et ils déposèrent le rouleau dans la chambre d'Élishama, le scribe ; et ils rapportèrent aux oreilles du roi toutes les paroles.
²¹ Et le roi envoya Jehudi pour prendre le rouleau ; et il le prit de la chambre d'Élishama, le scribe, et Jehudi le lut aux oreilles du roi et aux oreilles de tous les princes qui se tenaient là près du roi :
²² et le roi était assis dans la maison d'hiver, au neuvième mois ; et le brasier brûlait devant lui.
²³ Et il arriva que, quand Jehudi en eut lu trois ou quatre pages*, [le roi] le coupa avec le canif du scribe et le jeta au feu qui était dans le brasier, jusqu'à ce que tout le rouleau fût consumé au feu qui était dans le brasier.
²⁴ Et ils ne craignirent pas, et ne déchirèrent pas leurs vêtements, [ni] le roi ni tous ses serviteurs qui entendirent toutes ces paroles.
²⁵ Et même Elnathan, et Delaïa, et Guemaria, intercédèrent auprès du roi, afin qu'il ne brûlât pas le rouleau ; mais il ne les écouta point.
²⁶ Et le roi commanda à Jerakhmeël, fils d'Hammélec*, et à Seraïa, fils d'Azriel, et à Shélémia, fils d'Abdeël, de prendre Baruc, le scribe, et Jérémie le prophète ; mais l'Éternel les cacha.
²⁷ Et après que le roi eut brûlé le rouleau et les paroles que Baruc avait écrites de la bouche de Jérémie, la parole de l'Éternel vint à Jérémie, disant :
²⁸ Prends-toi encore un autre rouleau, et écris-y toutes les premières paroles qui étaient sur le premier rouleau que Jehoïakim, roi de Juda, a brûlé.
²⁹ Et tu diras à Jehoïakim, roi de Juda : Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Tu as brûlé ce rouleau, en disant : Pourquoi y as-tu écrit, disant : Le roi de Babylone viendra certainement, et il détruira ce pays et en fera disparaître les hommes et les bêtes ?
³⁰ C'est pourquoi, ainsi dit l'Éternel touchant Jehoïakim, roi de Juda : Il n'aura personne qui s'asseye sur le trône de David, et son cadavre sera jeté dehors, de jour à la chaleur, et de nuit à la gelée.
³¹ Et je le punirai, lui, et sa semence, et ses serviteurs, pour leur iniquité, et je ferai venir sur eux, et sur les habitants de Jérusalem, et sur les hommes de Juda, tout le mal que je leur ai annoncé, et ils n'ont point écouté.
³² Et Jérémie prit un autre rouleau, et le donna à Baruc, fils de Nérija, le scribe ; et il y écrivit, de la bouche de Jérémie, toutes les paroles du livre que Jehoïakim, roi de Juda, avait brûlé au feu ; et il y fut encore ajouté plusieurs semblables.

²⁰ And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.
²¹ So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.
²² Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.
²³ And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
²⁴ Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
²⁵ Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.
²⁶ But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.
²⁷ Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
²⁸ Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.
²⁹ And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
³⁰ Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
³¹ And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.
³² Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.

²¹ Misitque rex Judi ut sumeret volumen : qui tollens illud de gazophylacio Elisamæ scribæ, legit, audiente rege et universis principibus qui stabant circa regem.
²² Rex autem sedebat in domo hiemali, in mense nono, et posita erat arula coram eo plena prunis.
²³ Cumque legisset Judi tres pagellas vel quatuor, scidit illud scalpello scribæ, et projecit in ignem qui erat super arulam, donec consumeretur omne volumen igni qui erat in arula.
²⁴ Et non timuerunt, neque sciderunt vestimenta sua, rex et omnes servi ejus qui audierunt universos sermones istos.
²⁵ Verumtamen Elnathan, et Dalaias, et Gamarias, contradixerunt regi, ne combureret librum : et non audivit eos.

²⁸ Rursum tolle volumen aliud, et scribe in eo omnes sermones priores qui erant in primo volumine, quod combussit Joakim rex Juda.
²⁹ Et ad Joakim regem Juda dices : Hæc dicit Dominus : Tu combussisti volumen illud, dicens : Quare scripsisti in eo annuntians : Festinus veniet rex Babylonis, et vastabit terram hanc, et cessare faciet ex illa hominem et jumentum ?
³⁰ Propterea hæc dicit Dominus contra Joakim regem Juda : Non erit ex eo qui sedeat super solium David : et cadaver ejus projicietur ad æstum per diem, et ad gelu per noctem.
³¹ Et visitabo contra eum, et contra semen ejus, et contra servos ejus, iniquitates suas : et adducam super eos, et super habitatores Jerusalem, et super viros Juda, omne malum quod locutus sum ad eos, et non audierunt.
³² Jeremias autem tulit volumen aliud, et dedit illud Baruch filio Neriæ scribæ : qui scripsit in eo ex ore Jeremiæ omnes sermones libri quem combusserat Joakim rex Juda igni : et insuper additi sunt sermones multo plures quam antea fuerant.
