¹ Et on jeta le sort pour la tribu de Manassé, car il était le premier-né de Joseph. Makir, premier-né de Manassé, père de Galaad, avait reçu Galaad et Basan, car il était homme de guerre.
² Les autres fils de Manassé reçurent de même leur lot selon leurs familles, les fils d'Abiézer, les fils de Hélek, les fils de Sichem, les fils de Hépher et les fils de Sémida ; ce sont là les enfants mâles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs familles.
³ Tsélophcad, fils de Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, n'eut point de fils, mais seulement des filles ; et voici les noms de ses filles : Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Thirtsa.
⁴ Elles se présentèrent devant Eléazar, le sacrificateur, et devant Josué, fils de Nun, et devant les principaux, en disant : L'Eternel a ordonné à Moïse de nous donner un héritage parmi nos frères. Et on leur donna, selon la parole de l'Eternel, un héritage parmi les frères de leur père.
⁵ Dix parts échurent ainsi à Manassé, outre le pays de Galaad et de Basan situé de l'autre côté du Jourdain.
⁶ Car les filles de Manassé reçurent un héritage parmi ses fils ; et le pays de Galaad échut aux autres descendants de Manassé.
⁷ La limite de Manassé partait d'Asser, se dirigeait vers Micméthath, en face de Sichem, puis allait à droite vers les habitants d'En-Thappuach,
⁸ le territoire de Thappuach échut à Manassé, mais Thappuach elle-même, située à la frontière de Manassé, échut aux fils d'Ephraïm ;
⁹ la limite descendait ensuite au torrent de Kana, au midi du torrent ; les villes de cette région échues à Ephraïm étaient au milieu des villes de Manassé, et la limite de Manassé passait au nord du torrent et aboutissait à la mer.
¹⁰ Au sud, le territoire d'Ephraïm, au nord celui de Manassé ; et la mer était la limite. Ils confinaient à Asser du côté nord, et à Issacar du côté de l'orient.
¹¹ Manassé obtint dans les territoires d'Issacar et d'Asser Beth-Séan et les villes de son ressort, Jibléam et les villes de son ressort, les habitants de Dor avec les villes de son ressort, les habitants d'En-Dor avec les villes de son ressort, les habitants de Thaanac avec les villes de son ressort, et les habitants de Méguiddo avec les villes de son ressort, les trois hauteurs.
¹² Les fils de Manassé ne purent pas prendre possession de ces villes, et les Cananéens s'enhardirent à demeurer dans cette contrée.
¹³ Et lorsque les fils d'Israël se furent fortifiés, ils soumirent les Cananéens à un tribut et ne les chassèrent point.
¹⁴ Et les fils de Joseph parlèrent à Josué et lui dirent : Pourquoi ne m'as-tu donné en héritage qu'un seul lot et qu'une seule part ? Je suis pourtant un peuple nombreux, que l'Eternel a extraordinairement béni jusqu'à présent.
¹⁵ Et Josué leur dit : Si tu es un peuple nombreux, monte à la forêt, défriche-toi là une place dans le pays des Phéréziens et des Réphaïm, puisque tu es à l'étroit dans la montagne d'Ephraïm !
¹⁶ Et les fils de Joseph dirent : La montagne ne nous suffit pas, et il y a des chariots de fer chez tous les Cananéens qui habitent le territoire de la vallée, chez ceux de Beth-Séan et des villes de son ressort, et chez ceux qui sont dans la vallée de Jizréel.
¹⁷ Et Josué dit à la maison de Joseph, à Ephraïm et à Manassé : Tu es un peuple nombreux, et ta force est grande ; tu n'auras pas seulement un lot.
¹⁸ Car la montagne t'appartiendra ; comme c'est une forêt, tu la défricheras, et ses issues seront à toi, car tu chasseras les Cananéens, quoiqu'ils aient des chariots de fer et quoiqu'ils, soient puissants.

¹ There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.
² There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.
³ But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
⁴ And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
⁵ And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan;
⁶ Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.
⁷ And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of Entappuah.
⁸ Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;
⁹ And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:
¹⁰ Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.
¹¹ And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Bethshean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.
¹² Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
¹³ Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not utterly drive them out.
¹⁴ And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?
¹⁵ And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
¹⁶ And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethshean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.
¹⁷ And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:
¹⁸ But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

¹ Cecidit autem sors tribui Manasse (ipse enim est primogenitus Joseph) : Machir primogenito Manasse patri Galaad, qui fuit vir pugnator, habuitque possessionem Galaad et Basan :
² et reliquis filiorum Manasse juxta familias suas, filiis Abiezer, et filiis Helec, et filiis Esriel, et filiis Sechem, et filiis Hepher, et filiis Semida. Isti sunt filii Manasse filii Joseph, mares, per cognationes suas.

¹⁶ Cui responderunt filii Joseph : Non poterimus ad montana conscendere, cum ferreis curribus utantur Chananæi, qui habitant in terra campestri, in qua sitæ sunt Bethsan cum viculis suis, et Jezraël mediam possidens vallem.
¹⁷ Dixitque Josue ad domum Joseph, Ephraim et Manasse : Populus multus es, et magnæ fortitudinis : non habebis sortem unam,
¹⁸ sed transibis ad montem, et succides tibi, atque purgabis ad habitandum spatia : et poteris ultra procedere cum subverteris Chananæum, quem dicis ferreos habere currus, et esse fortissimum.
