¹ Et Josué, fils de Nun, envoya secrètement de Sittim deux espions en leur disant : Allez, examinez le pays et Jéricho. Et ils allèrent et entrèrent dans la maison d'une courtisane nommée Rabab, et ils couchèrent là.
² Et le roi de Jéricho en fut informé en ces mots : Voici, des hommes d'entre les fils d'Israël sont venus ici pendant la nuit pour reconnaître le pays.
³ Et le roi de Jéricho fit dire à Rahab : Livre les hommes qui sont arrivés chez toi et entrés dans ta maison, car ils sont venus pour reconnaître tout le pays.
⁴ Et la femme prit les deux hommes et les cacha ; et elle dit : En effet, des hommes sont venus chez moi, mais je n'ai pas su d'où ils étaient.
⁵ Et comme on allait fermer la porte, à la tombée de la nuit, ces hommes sont sortis ; je ne sais où ces hommes sont allés, hâtez-vous de les poursuivre, car vous les atteindrez.
⁶ Et elle les avait fait monter sur le toit, et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin qu'elle avait étendues sur le toit.
⁷ Et ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène aux gués du Jourdain, et l'on ferma la porte après que ceux qui les poursuivaient furent sortis.
⁸ Et, avant que les espions se couchassent, elle monta vers eux sur le toit.
⁹ Et elle dit à ces hommes : Je sais que l'Eternel vous a donné le pays et que la terreur que vous inspirez a fondu sur nous et que tous les habitants du pays défaillent devant vous.
¹⁰ Car nous avons appris comment l'Eternel a desséché les eaux de la mer Rouge devant vous, lorsque vous sortiez de l'Egypte, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amorrhéens au-delà du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez voués à l'interdit.
¹¹ Nous l'avons appris, et notre coeur s'est fondu, et il ne reste plus de courage en aucun de nous en face de vous ; car c'est l'Eternel votre Dieu qui est Dieu, en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre.
¹² Et maintenant, jurez-moi, je vous prie, par l'Eternel que, comme j'ai usé de bonté envers vous, vous aussi vous userez de bonté envers la maison de mon père, et donnez-m'en un gage assuré ;
¹³ et vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes soeurs, et tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et vous sauverez nos âmes de la mort.
¹⁴ Et ces hommes lui dirent : Que nos âmes soient livrées à la mort pour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne maintenant. Et il arrivera, lorsque l'Eternel nous donnera le pays, que nous userons envers toi de bonté et de fidélité.
¹⁵ Et elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car sa maison était attenante à la muraille, et elle logeait sur la muraille.
¹⁶ Et elle leur dit : Allez à la montagne, de peur que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent, et cachez-vous là trois jours, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient de retour ; après cela, vous suivrez votre chemin.
¹⁷ Et ces hommes lui dirent : Pour que nous puissions nous acquitter du serment que tu nous as fait faire maintenant,
¹⁸ voici, quand nous viendrons dans le pays, attache à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous as fait descendre ce cordon de fil écarlate ; puis rassemble auprès de toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute la maison de ton père.
¹⁹ Quiconque sortira de la porte de ta maison pour s'en aller dehors, son sang sera sur sa tête, mais nous en serons quittes. Mais quiconque sera avec toi dans la maison, son sang sera sur notre tête, si l'on met la main sur lui.
²⁰ Et si tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.
²¹ Et elle dit : Qu'il soit fait selon vos paroles ! Puis elle les congédia, et ils partirent. Et elle attacha à la fenêtre le cordon écarlate.
²² Ils partirent donc, et vinrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu'à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent de retour ; et ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent sur toute la route et ne les trouvèrent point.
²³ Et les deux hommes s'en retournèrent ; ils descendirent de la montagne et passèrent [le Jourdain] et vinrent vers Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.
²⁴ Et ils dirent à Josué : Certainement, l'Eternel a livré entre nos mains tout le pays, et même tous les habitants du pays défaillent devant nous.

¹ And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
² And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
³ And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
⁴ And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
⁵ And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
⁶ But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
⁷ And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
⁸ And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
⁹ And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
¹⁰ For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
¹¹ And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
¹² Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:
¹³ And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
¹⁴ And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
¹⁵ Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
¹⁶ And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
¹⁷ And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
¹⁸ Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.
¹⁹ And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
²⁰ And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.
²¹ And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
²² And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
²³ So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
²⁴ And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

²⁰ וְאִם־ תַּגִּ֖ידִי אֶת־ דְּבָרֵ֣נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיִ֣ינוּ נְקִיִּ֔ם מִשְּׁבֻעָתֵ֖ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃
²¹ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֣ם כֶּן־ ה֔וּא וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵ֖ם וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַתִּקְשֹׁ֛ר אֶת־ תִּקְוַ֥ת הַשָּׁנִ֖י בַּחַלּֽוֹן׃
²² וַיֵּלְכוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ הָהָ֔רָה וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ שָׁם֙ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים עַד־ שָׁ֖בוּ הָרֹדְפִ֑ים וַיְבַקְשׁ֧וּ הָרֹדְפִ֛ים בְּכָל־ הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ וְלֹ֥א מָצָֽאוּ׃
²³ וַיָּשֻׁ֜בוּ שְׁנֵ֤י הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מֵֽהָהָ֔ר וַיַּעַבְרוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֔אוּ אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־ נ֑וּן וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־ ל֔וֹ אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הַמֹּצְא֖וֹת אוֹתָֽם׃
²⁴ וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ כִּֽי־ נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וְגַם־ נָמֹ֛גוּ כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפָּנֵֽינוּ׃
