¹ Et les fils d'Israël commirent une infidélité au sujet de l'interdit : Acan, fils de Carmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérach, de la tribu de Juda, prit de l'interdit, et la colère de l'Eternel s'alluma contre les fils d'Israël.
² Et Josué envoya de Jéricho des hommes vers Aï, près de Beth-Aven, qui est à l'orient de Béthel, en leur disant : Montez et reconnaissez le pays. Et ces hommes montèrent et reconnurent Aï.
³ Et ils s'en retournèrent auprès de Josué et lui dirent : Que le peuple n'y monte pas tout entier ; qu'environ deux ou trois mille hommes y montent, et ils battront Aï. Ne donne point cette fatigue à tout le peuple, car ils sont peu nombreux.
⁴ Et environ trois mille hommes d'entre le peuple y montèrent, et ils s'enfuirent devant les hommes d'Aï,
⁵ et les hommes d'Aï leur tuèrent environ trente-six hommes et les poursuivirent devant la porte jusqu'à Sébarim et les battirent dans la descente, et le coeur du peuple se fondit et devint comme de l'eau.
⁶ Et Josué déchira ses vêtements et se jeta le visage contre terre devant l'arche de l'Eternel jusqu'au soir, lui et les Anciens d'Israël, et ils jetèrent de la poussière sur leur tête.
⁷ Et Josué dit : Ah ! Seigneur Eternel, pourquoi as-tu fait passer le Jourdain à ce peuple, afin de nous livrer aux mains des Amorrhéens pour nous perdre ? Si seulement nous avions su rester au-delà du Jourdain !
⁸ Je te prie, Seigneur, que dirai-je, après qu'Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis ?
⁹ Les Cananéens et tous les habitants du pays l'apprendront, ils nous envelopperont et feront disparaître notre nom de la terre, et que feras-tu pour ton grand nom ?
¹⁰ Et l'Eternel dit à Josué : Lève-toi ! Pourquoi t'es-tu ainsi jeté sur ta face ?
¹¹ Israël a péché, et même ils ont transgressé mon alliance que je leur ai prescrit d'observer, et même ils ont pris de l'interdit, et même ils ont dérobé, et même ils ont menti, et même ils l'ont mis dans leurs bagages.
¹² Et les fils d'Israël ne pourront tenir devant leurs ennemis ; ils tourneront le dos à leurs ennemis, car ils sont devenus interdit. Je ne continuerai pas à être avec vous, si vous ne détruisez l'interdit du milieu de vous.
¹³ Lève-toi, sanctifie le peuple, et dis : Sanctifiez-vous pour demain. Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : Il y a un interdit au milieu de toi, Israël ! Tu ne pourras point tenir devant tes ennemis jusqu'à ce que vous ayez ôté l'interdit du milieu de vous.
¹⁴ Et vous vous approcherez le matin par tribus, et la tribu que l'Eternel aura saisie s'approchera par familles, et la famille que l'Eternel aura saisie s'approchera par maisons, et la maison que l'Eternel aura saisie s'approchera par individus.
¹⁵ Et celui qui sera saisi comme ayant interdit sera brûlé, lui et tout ce qui est à lui, parce qu'il a transgressé l'alliance de l'Eternel et qu'il a commis une chose infâme en Israël.
¹⁶ Et le lendemain matin, Josué fit approcher Israël par tribus, et la tribu de Juda fut saisie.
¹⁷ Et il fit approcher les familles de Juda, et la famille de Zérach fut saisie ; et il fit approcher les familles de Zérach par individus, et Zabdi fut saisi.
¹⁸ Et il fit approcher la maison de celui-ci par individus, et Acan, fils de Carmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérach, de la tribu de Juda, fut saisi.
¹⁹ Et Josué dit à Acan : Mon fils, donne gloire, je te prie, à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, et lui rends hommage, et avoue-moi ce que tu as fait : ne me le cache point.
²⁰ Et Acan répondit à Josué et lui dit : C'est la vérité ! C'est moi qui ai péché contre l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, et voici tout ce que j'ai fait.
²¹ J'ai vu dans le butin une belle robe de Sinéar, et deux cents sicles d'argent, et un lingot d'or du poids de cinquante sicles, et je les ai convoités et je les ai pris ; et voici, ils sont cachés dans la terre au milieu de ma tente, et l'argent est dessous.
²² Et Josué envoya des messagers qui coururent à la tente, et voici, les objets étaient cachés dans la tente et l'argent était dessous.
²³ Et ils les prirent du milieu de la tente et les apportèrent à Josué et à tous les fils d'Israël, et les déposèrent devant l'Eternel.
²⁴ Et Josué et tout Israël avec lui prirent Acan, fils de Zérach, et l'argent, et la robe, et le lingot d'or, et ses fils, et ses filles, et ses boeufs, et ses ânes, et ses brebis, et sa tente, et tout ce qui était à lui, et ils les firent monter dans la vallée d'Acor.
²⁵ Et Josué dit : Pourquoi nous as-tu troublés ? Que l'Eternel te trouble aujourd'hui ! Et tout Israël le lapida, et on les brûla et on les tua à coups de pierres.
²⁶ Et ils élevèrent sur lui un grand tas de pierres [qui a subsisté] jusqu'à ce jour. Et l'Eternel revint de l'ardeur de sa colère. C'est pourquoi on a appelé jusqu'à ce jour ce lieu la vallée d'Acor.

¹ But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
² And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
³ And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
⁴ So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
⁵ And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
⁶ And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
⁷ And Joshua said, Alas, O LORD God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
⁸ O LORD, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
¹⁰ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
¹¹ Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
¹² Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
¹³ Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
¹⁴ In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
¹⁵ And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
¹⁶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
¹⁷ And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
¹⁸ And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
¹⁹ And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
²¹ When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
²² So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
²³ And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
²⁴ And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
²⁵ And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
²⁶ And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
