BCC ² Vanité des vanités ! Dit l'Écclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.

KJV ² Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

VULC ² [Vanitas vanitatum, dixit Ecclesiastes ;
vanitas vanitatum, et omnia vanitas.

WLC ² הֲבֵ֤ל הֲבָלִים֙ אָמַ֣ר קֹהֶ֔לֶת הֲבֵ֥ל הֲבָלִ֖ים הַכֹּ֥ל הָֽבֶל׃

BCC ³ Quel avantage revient-il à l'homme de toute la peine qu'il se donne sous le soleil ?

KJV ³ What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

VULC ³ Quid habet amplius homo
de universo labore suo quo laborat sub sole ?]

WLC ³ מַה־ יִּתְר֖וֹן לָֽאָדָ֑ם בְּכָל־ עֲמָל֔וֹ שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

BCC ⁴ Une génération passe, une génération vient, et la terre subsiste toujours.

KJV ⁴ One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

VULC ⁴ [Generatio præterit, et generatio advenit ;
terra autem in æternum stat.

WLC ⁴ דּ֤וֹר הֹלֵךְ֙ וְד֣וֹר בָּ֔א וְהָאָ֖רֶץ לְעוֹלָ֥ם עֹמָֽדֶת׃

BCC ⁵ Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche, et il se hâte de retourner à sa demeure, d'où il se lève de nouveau.

KJV ⁵ The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

VULC ⁵ Oritur sol et occidit,
et ad locum suum revertitur ;
ibique renascens,

WLC ⁵ וְזָרַ֥ח הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ וּבָ֣א הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְאֶ֨ל־ מְקוֹמ֔וֹ שׁוֹאֵ֛ף זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ ה֖וּא שָֽׁם׃

BCC ⁶ Allant vers le midi, tournant vers le nord, le vent se retourne encore, et reprend les mêmes circuits.

KJV ⁶ The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Lustrans universa in circuitu pergit spiritus,
et in circulos suos revertitur.

WLC ⁶ הוֹלֵךְ֙ אֶל־ דָּר֔וֹם וְסוֹבֵ֖ב אֶל־ צָפ֑וֹן סוֹבֵ֤ב ׀ סֹבֵב֙ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ הָר֔וּחַ וְעַל־ סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו שָׁ֥ב הָרֽוּחַ׃

BCC ⁷ Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n'est point remplie ; vers le lieu où ils se dirigent, ils continuent à aller.

KJV ⁷ All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

VULC ⁷ Omnia flumina intrant in mare,
et mare non redundat ;
ad locum unde exeunt flumina
revertuntur ut iterum fluant.

WLC ⁷ כָּל־ הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹלְכִ֣ים אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם וְהַיָּ֖ם אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מָלֵ֑א אֶל־ מְק֗וֹם שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹֽלְכִ֔ים שָׁ֛ם הֵ֥ם שָׁבִ֖ים לָלָֽכֶת׃

BCC ⁸ Toutes choses sont en travail, au-delà de ce qu'on peut dire ; l'oeil n'est pas rassasié de voir, et l'oreille ne se lasse pas d'entendre.

KJV ⁸ All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

VULC ⁸ Cunctæ res difficiles ;
non potest eas homo explicare sermone.
Non saturatur oculus visu,
nec auris auditu impletur.

WLC ⁸ כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים יְגֵעִ֔ים לֹא־ יוּכַ֥ל אִ֖ישׁ לְדַבֵּ֑ר לֹא־ תִשְׂבַּ֥ע עַ֙יִן֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְלֹא־ תִמָּלֵ֥א אֹ֖זֶן מִשְּׁמֹֽעַ׃

BCC ⁹ Ce qui a été, c'est ce qui sera, et ce qui s'est fait, c'est ce qui se fera ; et il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.

KJV ⁹ The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

WLC ⁹ מַה־ שֶּֽׁהָיָה֙ ה֣וּא שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֔ה וּמַה־ שֶׁנַּֽעֲשָׂ֔ה ה֖וּא שֶׁיֵּעָשֶׂ֑ה וְאֵ֥ין כָּל־ חָדָ֖שׁ תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

BCC ¹⁰ S'il est une chose dont on se dise : « Vois, c'est nouveau ! », cette chose a déjà existé dans les siècles qui nous ont précédés.

KJV ¹⁰ Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

nec valet quisquam dicere : Ecce hoc recens est :

BCC ¹¹ On ne se souvient pas de ce qui est ancien, et ce qui arrivera dans la suite ne laissera pas de souvenir chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.

KJV ¹¹ There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

BCC ¹² Moi, l'Écclésiaste, j'ai été roi d'Israël à Jérusalem, et j'ai appliqué mon coeur à rechercher et à sonder par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous les cieux.

KJV ¹² I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

WLC ¹² אֲנִ֣י קֹהֶ֗לֶת הָיִ֥יתִי מֶ֛לֶךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

BCC ¹³ C'est une occupation pénible à laquelle Dieu impose aux enfants des hommes de se livrer.

KJV ¹³ And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

VULC ¹³ et proposui in animo meo quærere et investigare sapienter
de omnibus quæ fiunt sub sole.
Hanc occupationem pessimam
dedit Deus filiis hominum, ut occuparentur in ea.

WLC ¹³ וְנָתַ֣תִּי אֶת־ לִבִּ֗י לִדְר֤וֹשׁ וְלָתוּר֙ בַּֽחָכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם ה֣וּא ׀ עִנְיַ֣ן רָ֗ע נָתַ֧ן אֱלֹהִ֛ים לִבְנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם לַעֲנ֥וֹת בּֽוֹ׃

BCC ¹⁴ J'ai examiné toutes les oeuvres qui se font sous le soleil : et voici, tout est vanité et poursuite du vent.

KJV ¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

BCC ¹⁵ Ce qui est courbé ne peut se redresser, et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.

KJV ¹⁵ That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

VULC ¹⁵ Perversi difficile corriguntur,
et stultorum infinitus est numerus.

WLC ¹⁵ מְעֻוָּ֖ת לֹא־ יוּכַ֣ל לִתְקֹ֑ן וְחֶסְר֖וֹן לֹא־ יוּכַ֥ל לְהִמָּנֽוֹת׃

BCC ¹⁶ Je me suis dit en moi-même : voici que j'ai accumulé et amassé de la sagesse, plus que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi à Jérusalem, et mon coeur a possédé amplement sagesse et science.

KJV ¹⁶ I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

VULC ¹⁶ Locutus sum in corde meo, dicens :
Ecce magnus effectus sum, et præcessi omnes sapientia
qui fuerunt ante me in Jerusalem ;
et mens mea contemplata est multa sapienter, et didici.

WLC ¹⁶ דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי אֲנִ֤י עִם־ לִבִּי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֲנִ֗י הִנֵּ֨ה הִגְדַּ֤לְתִּי וְהוֹסַ֙פְתִּי֙ חָכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ הָיָ֥ה לְפָנַ֖י עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְלִבִּ֛י רָאָ֥ה הַרְבֵּ֖ה חָכְמָ֥ה וָדָֽעַת׃

BCC ¹⁷ J'ai appliqué mon esprit à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître la sottise et la folie ; j'ai compris que cela aussi est poursuite du vent.

KJV ¹⁷ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

VULC ¹⁷ Dedique cor meum ut scirem prudentiam atque doctrinam,
erroresque et stultitiam ;
et agnovi quod in his quoque esset labor et afflictio spiritus :

WLC ¹⁷ וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֔ה וְדַ֥עַת הוֹלֵל֖וֹת וְשִׂכְל֑וּת יָדַ֕עְתִּי שֶׁגַּם־ זֶ֥ה ה֖וּא רַעְי֥וֹן רֽוּחַ׃

BCC ¹⁸ Car avec beaucoup de sagesse on a beaucoup de chagrin, et celui qui augmente sa science augmente sa douleur.

KJV ¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

VULC ¹⁸ eo quod in multa sapientia multa sit indignatio ;
et qui addit scientiam, addit et laborem.]
