WLC ¹ דִּבְרֵי֙ קֹהֶ֣לֶת בֶּן־ דָּוִ֔ד מֶ֖לֶךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

KJV ² Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

S21 ² Comble de l'inconsistance,
dit l'Ecclésiaste,
comble de l'inconsistance,
tout n'est que fumée!

WLC ² הֲבֵ֤ל הֲבָלִים֙ אָמַ֣ר קֹהֶ֔לֶת הֲבֵ֥ל הֲבָלִ֖ים הַכֹּ֥ל הָֽבֶל׃

KJV ³ What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

S21 ³ Quel avantage l'homme retire-t-il
de toute la peine
qu'il se donne sous le soleil?

WLC ³ מַה־ יִּתְר֖וֹן לָֽאָדָ֑ם בְּכָל־ עֲמָל֔וֹ שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

KJV ⁴ One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

S21 ⁴ Une génération s'en va,
une autre arrive
et la terre est toujours là.

WLC ⁴ דּ֤וֹר הֹלֵךְ֙ וְד֣וֹר בָּ֔א וְהָאָ֖רֶץ לְעוֹלָ֥ם עֹמָֽדֶת׃

KJV ⁵ The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

S21 ⁵ Le soleil se lève,
le soleil se couche,
il soupire après l'endroit
d'où il se lève de nouveau.

WLC ⁵ וְזָרַ֥ח הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ וּבָ֣א הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְאֶ֨ל־ מְקוֹמ֔וֹ שׁוֹאֵ֛ף זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ ה֖וּא שָֽׁם׃

KJV ⁶ The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

S21 ⁶ Le vent se dirige vers le sud,
tourne vers le nord,
puis il tourne encore
et reprend les mêmes circuits.

WLC ⁶ הוֹלֵךְ֙ אֶל־ דָּר֔וֹם וְסוֹבֵ֖ב אֶל־ צָפ֑וֹן סוֹבֵ֤ב ׀ סֹבֵב֙ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ הָר֔וּחַ וְעַל־ סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו שָׁ֥ב הָרֽוּחַ׃

KJV ⁷ All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

S21 ⁷ Tous les fleuves vont à la mer,
mais la mer n'est pas remplie
et ils continuent d'aller
vers leur destination.

WLC ⁷ כָּל־ הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹלְכִ֣ים אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם וְהַיָּ֖ם אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מָלֵ֑א אֶל־ מְק֗וֹם שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹֽלְכִ֔ים שָׁ֛ם הֵ֥ם שָׁבִ֖ים לָלָֽכֶת׃

KJV ⁸ All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

S21 ⁸ Tout est en mouvement,
plus qu'on ne peut le dire.
L'œil ne sera jamais rassasié de voir
et l'oreille ne sera jamais remplie au point de ne plus pouvoir écouter.

WLC ⁸ כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים יְגֵעִ֔ים לֹא־ יוּכַ֥ל אִ֖ישׁ לְדַבֵּ֑ר לֹא־ תִשְׂבַּ֥ע עַ֙יִן֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְלֹא־ תִמָּלֵ֥א אֹ֖זֶן מִשְּׁמֹֽעַ׃

KJV ⁹ The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

S21 ⁹ Ce qui a existé,
c'est ce qui existera,
et ce qui s'est fait,
c'est ce qui se fera.
Il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.

WLC ⁹ מַה־ שֶּֽׁהָיָה֙ ה֣וּא שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֔ה וּמַה־ שֶׁנַּֽעֲשָׂ֔ה ה֖וּא שֶׁיֵּעָשֶׂ֑ה וְאֵ֥ין כָּל־ חָדָ֖שׁ תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

KJV ¹⁰ Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

S21 ¹⁰ Si l'on dit à propos de quelque chose:
«Regarde ceci, c'est nouveau»,
en réalité cela existait déjà
dans les siècles précédents.

WLC ¹⁰ יֵ֥שׁ דָּבָ֛ר שֶׁיֹּאמַ֥ר רְאֵה־ זֶ֖ה חָדָ֣שׁ ה֑וּא כְּבָר֙ הָיָ֣ה לְעֹֽלָמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה מִלְּפָנֵֽנוּ׃

KJV ¹¹ There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

S21 ¹¹ On ne se souvient pas de ce qui est ancien,
et ce qui arrivera par la suite ne laissera pas de souvenir
chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.

WLC ¹¹ אֵ֥ין זִכְר֖וֹן לָרִאשֹׁנִ֑ים וְגַ֨ם לָאַחֲרֹנִ֜ים שֶׁיִּהְי֗וּ לֹֽא־ יִהְיֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ זִכָּר֔וֹן עִ֥ם שֶׁיִּהְי֖וּ לָאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃

KJV ¹² I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

S21 ¹² Moi, l'Ecclésiaste, j'ai été roi d'Israël à Jérusalem.

WLC ¹² אֲנִ֣י קֹהֶ֗לֶת הָיִ֥יתִי מֶ֛לֶךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

KJV ¹³ And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

S21 ¹³ J'ai appliqué mon cœur à rechercher et à explorer par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous le ciel: c'est une occupation pénible que Dieu réserve aux humains.

WLC ¹³ וְנָתַ֣תִּי אֶת־ לִבִּ֗י לִדְר֤וֹשׁ וְלָתוּר֙ בַּֽחָכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם ה֣וּא ׀ עִנְיַ֣ן רָ֗ע נָתַ֧ן אֱלֹהִ֛ים לִבְנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם לַעֲנ֥וֹת בּֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

S21 ¹⁴ J'ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil et j'ai constaté que tout n'est que fumée et revient à poursuivre le vent.

WLC ¹⁴ רָאִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֔ים שֶֽׁנַּעֲשׂ֖וּ תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַכֹּ֛ל הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃

KJV ¹⁵ That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

S21 ¹⁵ Ce qui est courbé ne peut pas se redresser et ce qui manque ne peut pas être compté.

WLC ¹⁵ מְעֻוָּ֖ת לֹא־ יוּכַ֣ל לִתְקֹ֑ן וְחֶסְר֖וֹן לֹא־ יוּכַ֥ל לְהִמָּנֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹⁶ I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

S21 ¹⁶ Je me suis dit: «J'ai augmenté et développé la sagesse plus que tous ceux qui ont dominé avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon cœur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de connaissance.»

WLC ¹⁶ דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי אֲנִ֤י עִם־ לִבִּי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֲנִ֗י הִנֵּ֨ה הִגְדַּ֤לְתִּי וְהוֹסַ֙פְתִּי֙ חָכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ הָיָ֥ה לְפָנַ֖י עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְלִבִּ֛י רָאָ֥ה הַרְבֵּ֖ה חָכְמָ֥ה וָדָֽעַת׃

KJV ¹⁷ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

S21 ¹⁷ J'ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse, mais aussi la folie et la stupidité. J'ai découvert que cela aussi, cela revient à poursuivre le vent.

WLC ¹⁷ וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֔ה וְדַ֥עַת הוֹלֵל֖וֹת וְשִׂכְל֑וּת יָדַ֕עְתִּי שֶׁגַּם־ זֶ֥ה ה֖וּא רַעְי֥וֹן רֽוּחַ׃

KJV ¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

S21 ¹⁸ En effet, avec beaucoup de sagesse on a beaucoup de chagrin, et celui qui augmente sa connaissance augmente sa souffrance.

WLC ¹⁸ כִּ֛י בְּרֹ֥ב חָכְמָ֖ה רָב־ כָּ֑עַס וְיוֹסִ֥יף דַּ֖עַת יוֹסִ֥יף מַכְאֽוֹב׃
