KJV ¹ And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

KJV ² And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

BAN ³ Et elle conçut et enfanta un fils, et il le nomma Er.

KJV ³ And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

BAN ⁴ Et elle conçut encore et enfanta un fils, et elle le nomma Onan.

KJV ⁴ And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

BAN ⁵ Elle enfanta encore un fils, et elle le nomma Schéla. Et Juda était à Kézib quand elle l'enfanta.

KJV ⁵ And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

VULC ⁵ Tertium quoque peperit : quem appellavit Sela ; quo nato, parere ultra cessavit.

BAN ⁶ Et Juda prit pour Er, son premier-né, une femme nommée Thamar.

KJV ⁶ And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

BAN ⁷ Et Er, premier-né de Juda, fut méchant aux yeux de l'Eternel, et l'Eternel le fit mourir.

KJV ⁷ And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

VULC ⁷ Fuit quoque Her primogenitus Judæ nequam in conspectu Domini : et ab eo occisus est.

BAN ⁸ Et Juda dit à Onan : Va vers la femme de ton frère en ta qualité de beau-frère et suscite une postérité à ton frère.

KJV ⁸ And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

VULC ⁸ Dixit ergo Judas ad Onan filium suum : Ingredere ad uxorem fratris tui, et sociare illi, ut suscites semen fratri tuo.

BAN ⁹ Mais Onan savait que cette postérité ne serait pas à lui, et quand il allait vers la femme de son frère, il faisait en sorte de ne point donner de postérité à son frère.

KJV ⁹ And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

VULC ⁹ Ille sciens non sibi nasci filios, introiens ad uxorem fratris sui, semen fundebat in terram, ne liberi fratris nomine nascerentur.

BAN ¹⁰ Et ce qu'il faisait déplut à l'Eternel, et il le fit mourir aussi.

KJV ¹⁰ And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

VULC ¹⁰ Et idcirco percussit eum Dominus, quod rem detestabilem faceret.

BAN ¹¹ Et Juda dit à Thamar, sa belle-fille : Demeure comme veuve dans la maison de ton père jusqu'à ce que Schéla, mon fils, soit devenu grand. Car il disait : Il ne faut pas qu'il meure, lui aussi, comme ses frères. Et Thamar s'en alla et demeura dans la maison de son père.

KJV ¹¹ Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

VULC ¹¹ Quam ob rem dixit Judas Thamar nurui suæ : Esto vidua in domo patris tui, donec crescat Sela filius meus : timebat enim ne et ipse moreretur, sicut fratres ejus. Quæ abiit, et habitavit in domo patris sui.

BAN ¹² Et bien des jours s'écoulèrent, et la fille de Schua, femme de Juda, mourut. Et Juda, après avoir fini son deuil, monta vers ceux qui tondaient ses brebis à Thimna, lui et Hira, son ami, l'Adullamite.

KJV ¹² And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

KJV ¹³ And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

BAN ¹⁴ Et elle ôta ses habits de veuve, se couvrit d'un voile et s'en enveloppa, et elle s'assit à l'entrée d'Enaïm, qui est sur le chemin de Thimna ; car elle avait vu que Schéla était devenu grand et qu'elle ne lui avait pas été donnée pour femme.

KJV ¹⁴ And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

VULC ¹⁴ Quæ, depositis viduitatis vestibus, assumpsit theristrum : et mutato habitu, sedit in bivio itineris, quod ducit Thamnam : eo quod crevisset Sela, et non eum accepisset maritum.

BAN ¹⁵ Et Juda la vit et la prit pour une femme de mauvaise vie ; car elle avait couvert son visage.

KJV ¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

VULC ¹⁵ Quam cum vidisset Judas, suspicatus est esse meretricem : operuerat enim vultum suum, ne agnosceretur.

BAN ¹⁶ Et il se détourna vers elle, vers le chemin, et il dit : Permets que j'aille vers toi. Car il ne savait pas que ce fût sa belle-fille. Elle répondit : Que me donneras-tu pour venir vers moi ?

KJV ¹⁶ And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

VULC ¹⁶ Ingrediensque ad eam, ait : Dimitte me ut coëam tecum : nesciebat enim quod nurus sua esset. Qua respondente : Quid dabis mihi ut fruaris concubitu meo ?

KJV ¹⁷ And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

BAN ²⁰ Et Juda envoya le chevreau par son ami, l'Adullamite, pour retirer le gage des mains de cette femme ; mais il ne la trouva point.

KJV ²⁰ And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

VULC ²⁰ Misit autem Judas hædum per pastorem suum Odollamitem, ut reciperet pignus quod dederat mulieri : qui cum non invenisset eam,

BAN ²¹ Et il interrogea les hommes du lieu, en disant : Où est cette prostituée qui était à Enaïm, au bord du chemin ? Ils lui dirent : Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.

KJV ²¹ Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

VULC ²¹ interrogavit homines loci illius : Ubi est mulier quæ sedebat in bivio ? Respondentibus cunctis : Non fuit in loco ista meretrix.

BAN ²² Et il retourna vers Juda et dit : Je ne l'ai point trouvée, et même les gens du lieu ont dit : Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.

KJV ²² And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

VULC ²² Reversus est ad Judam, et dixit ei : Non inveni eam : sed et homines loci illius dixerunt mihi, numquam sedisse ibi scortum.

BAN ²³ Et Juda dit : Qu'elle garde cela ! Il ne faut pas qu'on se moque de nous. C'est un fait que j'ai envoyé ce chevreau, et tu ne l'as point trouvée.

KJV ²³ And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

VULC ²³ Ait Judas : Habeat sibi, certe mendacii arguere nos non potest, ego misi hædum quem promiseram : et tu non invenisti eam.

BAN ²⁴ Et il arriva qu'environ trois mois après on alla dire à Juda : Thamar, ta belle-fille, s'est prostituée, et même la voilà enceinte de ses prostitutions. Et Juda dit : Faites-la sortir, et qu'elle soit brûlée.

KJV ²⁴ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

VULC ²⁴ Ecce autem post tres menses nuntiaverunt Judæ, dicentes : Fornicata est Thamar nurus tua, et videtur uterus illius intumescere. Dixitque Judas : Producite eam ut comburatur.

BAN ²⁵ Comme on la faisait sortir, elle envoya dire à son beau-père : C'est d'un homme à qui ceci appartient que je suis enceinte. Elle dit encore : Examine, je te prie, à qui sont ce cachet et ces cordons, et ce bâton.

KJV ²⁵ When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

VULC ²⁵ Quæ cum duceretur ad pœnam, misit ad socerum suum, dicens : De viro, cujus hæc sunt, concepi : cognosce cujus sit annulus, et armilla, et baculus.

BAN ²⁶ Et Juda les reconnut et dit : Elle est plus juste que moi ; [c'est arrivé] parce que je ne l'ai point donnée à Schéla, mon fils. Et il ne la connut plus.

KJV ²⁶ And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

VULC ²⁶ Qui, agnitis muneribus, ait : Justior me est : quia non tradidi eam Sela filio meo. Attamen ultra non cognovit eam.

BAN ²⁷ Et à l'époque où elle devait accoucher, voici il y avait des jumeaux dans son sein.

KJV ²⁷ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

VULC ²⁷ Instante autem partu, apparuerunt gemini in utero : atque in ipsa effusione infantium unus protulit manum, in qua obstetrix ligavit coccinum, dicens :

BAN ²⁸ Et pendant qu'elle enfantait, l'un d'eux étendit une main ; et l'accoucheuse la prit et y lia un fil écarlate en disant : C'est celui-ci qui est sorti le premier.

KJV ²⁸ And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

BAN ²⁹ Mais il retira sa main, et voici son frère sortit. Et elle dit : Quelle brèche tu as faite ! La brèche soit sur toi ! Et on le nomma Pérets.

KJV ²⁹ And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

VULC ²⁹ Illo vero retrahente manum, egressus est alter : dixitque mulier : Quare divisa est propter te maceria ? et ob hanc causam, vocavit nomen ejus Phares.

KJV ³⁰ And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
