KJV ¹ And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

KJV ² And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

MAR ² Et Juda y vit la fille d'un Cananéen, nommé Suah, et il la prit, et vint vers elle.

VULC ² Viditque ibi filiam hominis Chananæi, vocabulo Sue : et accepta uxore, ingressus est ad eam.

KJV ³ And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

MAR ³ Et elle conçut et enfanta un fils, et on le nomma Her.

KJV ⁴ And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

MAR ⁴ Et elle conçut encore et enfanta un fils, et elle le nomma Onan.

VULC ⁴ Rursumque concepto fœtu, natum filium vocavit Onan.

WLC ⁴ וַתַּ֥הַר ע֖וֹד וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ אוֹנָֽן׃

KJV ⁵ And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

MAR ⁵ Elle enfanta encore un fils, et elle le nomma Séla. Et [Juda] était en Késib quand elle accoucha de celui-ci.

VULC ⁵ Tertium quoque peperit : quem appellavit Sela ; quo nato, parere ultra cessavit.

WLC ⁵ וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

KJV ⁶ And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

MAR ⁶ Et Juda maria Her, son premier-né, avec une fille qui avait nom Tamar.

VULC ⁶ Dedit autem Judas uxorem primogenito suo Her, nomine Thamar.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּקַּ֧ח יְהוּדָ֛ה אִשָּׁ֖ה לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ וּשְׁמָ֖הּ תָּמָֽר׃

KJV ⁷ And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

MAR ⁷ Mais Her le premier-né de Juda était méchant devant l'Eternel, et l'Eternel le fit mourir.

VULC ⁷ Fuit quoque Her primogenitus Judæ nequam in conspectu Domini : et ab eo occisus est.

WLC ⁷ וַיְהִ֗י עֵ֚ר בְּכ֣וֹר יְהוּדָ֔ה רַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ⁸ And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

MAR ⁸ Alors Juda dit à Onan : Viens vers la femme de ton frère, et prends-la pour femme, [comme étant son beau-frère], et suscite des enfants à ton frère.

VULC ⁸ Dixit ergo Judas ad Onan filium suum : Ingredere ad uxorem fratris tui, et sociare illi, ut suscites semen fratri tuo.

WLC ⁸ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ לְאוֹנָ֔ן בֹּ֛א אֶל־ אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יךָ וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ וְהָקֵ֥ם זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

KJV ⁹ And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

MAR ⁹ Mais Onan sachant que les enfants ne seraient pas à lui, se corrompait contre terre toutes les fois qu'il venait vers la femme de son frère, afin qu'il ne donnât pas des enfants à son frère.

VULC ⁹ Ille sciens non sibi nasci filios, introiens ad uxorem fratris sui, semen fundebat in terram, ne liberi fratris nomine nascerentur.

WLC ⁹ וַיֵּ֣דַע אוֹנָ֔ן כִּ֛י לֹּ֥א ל֖וֹ יִהְיֶ֣ה הַזָּ֑רַע וְהָיָ֞ה אִם־ בָּ֨א אֶל־ אֵ֤שֶׁת אָחִיו֙ וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה לְבִלְתִּ֥י נְתָן־ זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁰ And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

MAR ¹⁰ Et ce qu'il faisait déplut à l'Eternel, c'est pourquoi il le fit aussi mourir.

VULC ¹⁰ Et idcirco percussit eum Dominus, quod rem detestabilem faceret.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיֵּ֛רַע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיָּ֖מֶת גַּם־ אֹתֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹¹ Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

MAR ¹¹ Et Juda dit à Tamar sa belle-fille : Demeure veuve en la maison de ton père, jusqu'à ce que Séla mon fils soit grand ; car il dit : Il faut prendre garde qu'il ne meure comme ses frères. Ainsi Tamar s'en alla, et demeura en la maison de son père.

VULC ¹¹ Quam ob rem dixit Judas Thamar nurui suæ : Esto vidua in domo patris tui, donec crescat Sela filius meus : timebat enim ne et ipse moreretur, sicut fratres ejus. Quæ abiit, et habitavit in domo patris sui.

KJV ¹² And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

MAR ¹² Et après plusieurs jours la fille de Suah, femme de Juda, mourut ; et Juda, s'étant consolé, monta vers les tondeurs de ses brebis à Timnath, avec Hira Hadullamite, son intime ami.

VULC ¹² Evolutis autem multis diebus, mortua est filia Sue uxor Judæ : qui, post luctum consolatione suscepta, ascendebat ad tonsores ovium suarum, ipse et Hiras opilio gregis Odollamites, in Thamnas.

WLC ¹² וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתָּ֖מָת בַּת־ שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּ֜עַל עַל־ גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ ה֗וּא וְחִירָ֛ה רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י תִּמְנָֽתָה׃

KJV ¹³ And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

MAR ¹³ Et on fit savoir à Tamar, et on lui dit : Voici, ton beau-père monte à Timnath, pour tondre ses brebis.

VULC ¹³ Nuntiatumque est Thamar quod socer illius ascenderet in Thamnas ad tondendas oves.

WLC ¹³ וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְתָמָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֥ה חָמִ֛יךְ עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁴ And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

MAR ¹⁴ Et elle ôta de dessus soi les habits de son veuvage, et se couvrit d'un voile, et s'en enveloppa, et s'assit en un carrefour qui [était] sur le chemin tirant vers Timnath ; parce qu'elle voyait que Séla était devenu grand, et qu'elle ne lui avait point été donnée pour femme.

VULC ¹⁴ Quæ, depositis viduitatis vestibus, assumpsit theristrum : et mutato habitu, sedit in bivio itineris, quod ducit Thamnam : eo quod crevisset Sela, et non eum accepisset maritum.

WLC ¹⁴ וַתָּסַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ וַתְּכַ֤ס בַּצָּעִיף֙ וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ כִּֽי־ גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה וְהִ֕וא לֹֽא־ נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

KJV ¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

MAR ¹⁵ Et quand Juda la vit, il s'imagina que c'était une prostituée ; car elle avait couvert son visage.

VULC ¹⁵ Quam cum vidisset Judas, suspicatus est esse meretricem : operuerat enim vultum suum, ne agnosceretur.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ לְזוֹנָ֑ה כִּ֥י כִסְּתָ֖ה פָּנֶֽיהָ׃

KJV ¹⁶ And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

MAR ¹⁶ Et il se détourna vers elle au chemin, et lui dit : Permets, je te prie, que je vienne vers toi ; car il ne savait pas que ce [fût] sa belle-fille. Et elle répondit : Que me donneras-tu afin que tu viennes vers moi ?

VULC ¹⁶ Ingrediensque ad eam, ait : Dimitte me ut coëam tecum : nesciebat enim quod nurus sua esset. Qua respondente : Quid dabis mihi ut fruaris concubitu meo ?

WLC ¹⁶ וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ אֶל־ הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָֽבָה־ נָּא֙ אָב֣וֹא אֵלַ֔יִךְ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י כַלָּת֖וֹ הִ֑וא וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מַה־ תִּתֶּן־ לִּ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֵלָֽי׃

KJV ¹⁷ And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

MAR ¹⁷ Et il dit : Je t'enverrai un chevreau d'entre les chèvres du troupeau. Et elle répondit : Me donneras-tu des gages, jusqu'à ce que tu l'envoies ?

VULC ¹⁷ dixit : Mittam tibi hædum de gregibus. Rursumque illa dicente : Patiar quod vis, si dederis mihi arrhabonem, donec mittas quod polliceris.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֛י אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־ עִזִּ֖ים מִן־ הַצֹּ֑אן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־ תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן עַ֥ד שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃

KJV ¹⁸ And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

MAR ¹⁸ Et il dit : Quel gage est-ce que je te donnerai ? Et elle répondit : Ton cachet, ton mouchoir, et ton bâton que tu as en ta main. Et il les lui donna ; et il vint vers elle, et elle conçut de lui.

VULC ¹⁸ Ait Judas : Quid tibi vis pro arrhabone dari ? Respondit : Annulum tuum, et armillam, et baculum quem manu tenes. Ad unum igitur coitum mulier concepit,

WLC ¹⁸ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָ֣ה הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־ לָּךְ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ וּמַטְּךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וַיִּתֶּן־ לָּ֛הּ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁹ And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

MAR ¹⁹ Puis elle se leva et s'en alla, et ayant quitté son voile elle reprit les habits de son veuvage.

VULC ¹⁹ et surgens abiit : depositoque habitu quem sumpserat, induta est viduitatis vestibus.

KJV ²⁰ And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

MAR ²⁰ Et Juda envoya un chevreau d'entre les chèvres par l'Hadullamite son intime ami ; afin qu'il reprît le gage de la main de la femme ; mais il ne la trouva point.

VULC ²⁰ Misit autem Judas hædum per pastorem suum Odollamitem, ut reciperet pignus quod dederat mulieri : qui cum non invenisset eam,

WLC ²⁰ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶת־ גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים בְּיַד֙ רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י לָקַ֥חַת הָעֵרָב֖וֹן מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹ֖א מְצָאָֽהּ׃

KJV ²¹ Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

MAR ²¹ Et il interrogea les hommes du lieu où elle avait été, en disant : Où [est] cette prostituée qui [était] dans le carrefour sur le chemin ? Et ils répondirent : Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.

VULC ²¹ interrogavit homines loci illius : Ubi est mulier quæ sedebat in bivio ? Respondentibus cunctis : Non fuit in loco ista meretrix.

WLC ²¹ וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־ אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם עַל־ הַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ לֹא־ הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

KJV ²² And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

MAR ²² Et il retourna à Juda, et lui dit : Je ne l'ai point trouvée ; et même les gens du lieu m'ont dit : Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.

VULC ²² Reversus est ad Judam, et dixit ei : Non inveni eam : sed et homines loci illius dixerunt mihi, numquam sedisse ibi scortum.

WLC ²² וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ אֶל־ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ וְגַ֨ם אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹא־ הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

KJV ²³ And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

MAR ²³ Et Juda dit : Qu'elle garde le [gage], de peur que nous ne soyons en mépris. Voici, j'ai envoyé ce chevreau, mais tu ne l'as point trouvée.

VULC ²³ Ait Judas : Habeat sibi, certe mendacii arguere nos non potest, ego misi hædum quem promiseram : et tu non invenisti eam.

WLC ²³ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ תִּֽקַּֽח־ לָ֔הּ פֶּ֖ן נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙ הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃

KJV ²⁴ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

MAR ²⁴ Or il arriva qu'environ trois mois [après] on fit un rapport à Juda, en disant : Tamar ta belle-fille a commis un adultère, et voici elle est même enceinte. Et Juda dit : Faites-la sortir, et qu'elle soit brûlée.

VULC ²⁴ Ecce autem post tres menses nuntiaverunt Judæ, dicentes : Fornicata est Thamar nurus tua, et videtur uterus illius intumescere. Dixitque Judas : Producite eam ut comburatur.

WLC ²⁴ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה לֵֽאמֹר֙ זָֽנְתָה֙ תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ וְגַ֛ם הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה לִזְנוּנִ֑ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֔ה הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃

KJV ²⁵ When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

MAR ²⁵ Et comme on la faisait sortir, elle envoya dire à son beau-père : Je suis enceinte de l'homme à qui ces choses appartiennent. Elle dit aussi : Reconnais, je te prie, à qui [est] ce cachet, ce mouchoir, et ce bâton.

VULC ²⁵ Quæ cum duceretur ad pœnam, misit ad socerum suum, dicens : De viro, cujus hæc sunt, concepi : cognosce cujus sit annulus, et armilla, et baculus.

WLC ²⁵ הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־ חָמִ֙יהָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־ אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ אָנֹכִ֖י הָרָ֑ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַכֶּר־ נָ֔א לְמִ֞י הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

KJV ²⁶ And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

MAR ²⁶ Alors Juda les reconnut, et il dit : Elle est plus juste que moi ; parce que je ne l'ai point donnée à Séla, mon fils ; et il ne la connut plus.

VULC ²⁶ Qui, agnitis muneribus, ait : Justior me est : quia non tradidi eam Sela filio meo. Attamen ultra non cognovit eam.

WLC ²⁶ וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֥ן לֹא־ נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י וְלֹֽא־ יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה׃

KJV ²⁷ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

MAR ²⁷ Et comme elle fut sur le point d'accoucher, voici, deux jumeaux étaient dans son ventre ;

VULC ²⁷ Instante autem partu, apparuerunt gemini in utero : atque in ipsa effusione infantium unus protulit manum, in qua obstetrix ligavit coccinum, dicens :

WLC ²⁷ וַיְהִ֖י בְּעֵ֣ת לִדְתָּ֑הּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה תְאוֹמִ֖ים בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

KJV ²⁸ And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

MAR ²⁸ Et dans le temps qu'elle enfantait, [l'un d'eux] donna la main, et la sage-femme la prit, et lia sur sa main un fil d'écarlate, en disant : Celui-ci sort le premier.

VULC ²⁸ Iste egredietur prior.

WLC ²⁸ וַיְהִ֥י בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ וַיִּתֶּן־ יָ֑ד וַתִּקַּ֣ח הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר עַל־ יָד֤וֹ שָׁנִי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר זֶ֖ה יָצָ֥א רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

KJV ²⁹ And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

MAR ²⁹ Mais comme il eut retiré sa main, voici, son frère sortit ; et elle dit : Quelle ouverture t'es-tu faite ! L'ouverture soit sur toi ; et on le nomma Pharez.

VULC ²⁹ Illo vero retrahente manum, egressus est alter : dixitque mulier : Quare divisa est propter te maceria ? et ob hanc causam, vocavit nomen ejus Phares.

WLC ²⁹ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ וְהִנֵּה֙ יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו וַתֹּ֕אמֶר מַה־ פָּרַ֖צְתָּ עָלֶ֣יךָ פָּ֑רֶץ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ פָּֽרֶץ׃

KJV ³⁰ And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

MAR ³⁰ Ensuite son frère sortit, ayant sur sa main le fil d'écarlate, et on le nomma Zara.
