BAN ¹ Job prit la parole et dit :

KJV ¹ Then Job answered and said,

BAN ² J'ai entendu bien des choses pareilles ;
Vous êtes tous des consolateurs fâcheux.

KJV ² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

BAN ³ Y aura-t-il une fin à ces paroles en l'air ?
Qu'est-ce qui t'excite à répondre ?

KJV ³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?

BAN ⁴ Moi aussi, je pourrais parler comme vous.
Si seulement vous étiez à ma place,
J'arrangerais des discours contre vous,
Je secouerais la tête à votre sujet.

KJV ⁴ I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

BAN ⁵ Je vous encouragerais... de ma bouche,
Je vous calmerais par la pitié... de mes lèvres !

KJV ⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.

BAN ⁶ Si je parle, ma douleur ne se calme pas,
Si je me tais, en quoi suis-je soulagé ?

KJV ⁶ Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?

BAN ⁷ Mais, maintenant, tu m'as tout épuisé,
Tu as dispersé tout mon entourage,

KJV ⁷ But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company.

BAN ⁸ Tu m'as terrassé ; témoignage contre moi !
Mes souffrances imméritées s'élèvent contre moi ! et m'accusent en face !

KJV ⁸ And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.

BAN ⁹ Sa colère m'a déchiré et me poursuit ;
Il a grincé les dents contre moi,
Mon adversaire me transperce des yeux.

KJV ⁹ He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.

BAN ¹⁰ Ils ont ouvert la bouche toute grande contre moi,
Ils m'ont frappé la joue ignominieusement,
Tous ensemble ils serrent les rangs contre moi.

KJV ¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.

BAN ¹¹ Dieu me livre à l'homme inique,
Il me jette entre les mains des méchants.

KJV ¹¹ God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

BAN ¹² J'étais en paix : il m'a accablé,
Il m'a saisi à la nuque, et m'a écrasé,
Et m'a posé devant lui comme cible.

KJV ¹² I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

BAN ¹³ Ses flèches m'environnent ;
Il me perce les reins sans pitié,
Il répand ma bile à terre.

KJV ¹³ His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.

BAN ¹⁴ Il me fait blessure sur blessure,
Il court contre moi comme un puissant guerrier.

KJV ¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.

BAN ¹⁵ J'ai attaché un sac sur ma peau,
J'ai enfoncé ma corne dans la poussière.

KJV ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.

BAN ¹⁶ Mon visage est tout rouge de pleurs,
Une ombre de la mort repose sur mes paupières,

KJV ¹⁶ My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

BAN ¹⁷ Bien qu'il n'y ait pas de violence dans mes mains,
Et que ma prière soit pure !

KJV ¹⁷ Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.

BAN ¹⁸ Terre, ne couvre pas mon sang !
Que mon cri ne s'arrête nulle part !

KJV ¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place.

BAN ¹⁹ Maintenant déjà, voici, mon témoin est dans le ciel,
Et mon garant dans les hauts lieux.

KJV ¹⁹ Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.

BAN ²⁰ Mes amis sont des moqueurs !
C'est vers Dieu que se tournent mes yeux en pleurs.

KJV ²⁰ My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.

BAN ²¹ Afin qu'Il donne raison à l'homme contre Dieu,
Au fils de l'homme contre ses amis.

KJV ²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!

BAN ²² Car les ans qui me sont comptés s'avancent :
Je marche sur un sentier d'où je ne reviendrai pas.

KJV ²² When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.
