BAN ¹ Après cela Job ouvrit la bouche et maudit le jour de sa naissance.

KJV ¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

BAN ² Et Job prit la parole et dit :

KJV ² And Job spake, and said,

BAN ³ Périsse le jour où je suis né,
Et la nuit qui a dit : Un homme est conçu !

KJV ³ Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

BAN ⁴ Ce jour-là, qu'il soit ténèbres,
Que Dieu, d'en-haut, ne s'en informe pas,
Que la lumière ne resplendisse pas sur lui !

KJV ⁴ Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

BAN ⁵ Que les ténèbres et l'obscurité le réclament,
Qu'une nuée repose sur lui,
Que des éclipses l'épouvantent !

KJV ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

BAN ⁶ Cette nuit-là, qu'une sombre brume s'en empare,
Qu'elle ne compte pas dans les jours de l'année,
Qu'elle n'entre pas au nombre des mois !

KJV ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

BAN ⁷ Voici, que cette nuit-là soit stérile,
Que l'allégresse en soit bannie !

KJV ⁷ Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

BAN ⁸ Qu'ils la marquent d'un signe, ceux qui maudissent les jours,
Ceux qui sont experts à exciter le Léviathan !

KJV ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

BAN ⁹ Que les astres de son matin s'obscurcissent,
Qu'elle s'attende à la lumière et qu'il n'en vienne pas,
Et qu'elle ne voie pas les paupières de l'aurore,

KJV ⁹ Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

BAN ¹⁰ Puisqu'elle n'a pas fermé les portes du sein qui m'a porté,
Et qu'elle n'a pas dérobé le malheur à mes yeux.

KJV ¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

BAN ¹¹ Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort dès les entrailles de ma mère ?
Pourquoi n'ai-je pas expiré en sortant de son sein ?

KJV ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

BAN ¹² Pourquoi des genoux m'ont-ils reçu ?
Pourquoi des mamelles, pour m'allaiter ?

KJV ¹² Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

BAN ¹³ Car maintenant, je serais couché et je serais tranquille ;
Je dormirais, et alors j'aurais du repos,

KJV ¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

BAN ¹⁴ Avec les rois et les arbitres du monde,
Qui se sont bâti des ruines ;

KJV ¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth, which build desolate places for themselves;

BAN ¹⁵ Ou avec les princes à qui l'or appartenait,
Qui remplissaient leurs maisons d'argent ;

KJV ¹⁵ Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

BAN ¹⁶ Ou bien, comme l'avorton caché, je n'aurais pas vécu,
Comme les petits enfants qui n'ont pas vu la lumière.

KJV ¹⁶ Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

BAN ¹⁷ Là, les méchants cessent de tourmenter,
Là se reposent ceux qui sont privés de force ;

KJV ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

BAN ¹⁸ Les captifs sont réunis en sécurité ;
Ils n'entendent pas la voix de l'exacteur.

KJV ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

BAN ¹⁹ Petits et grands s'y confondent,
L'esclave y est libre de son maître.

KJV ¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

BAN ²⁰ Pourquoi donner la lumière aux malheureux,
Et la vie à ceux qui ont l'amertume dans l'âme ;

KJV ²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

BAN ²¹ Qui souhaitent la mort, et elle ne vient pas,
Et qui la recherchent plus ardemment que des trésors ;

KJV ²¹ Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

BAN ²² Qui se réjouiraient jusqu'à l'allégresse,
Tressailleraient de joie, s'ils trouvaient le tombeau ;

KJV ²² Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

BAN ²³ A l'homme dont la route est obscure,
Et que Dieu enferme de toutes parts ?

KJV ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

BAN ²⁴ Car mes gémissements me tiennent lieu de pain,
Mes rugissements se répandent comme les eaux ;

KJV ²⁴ For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

BAN ²⁵ Car, dès que je crains un mal, il m'atteint,
Et ce que je redoute m'arrive.

KJV ²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

BAN ²⁶ Avant que j'aie pu trouver trêve, paix et repos,
Viennent de nouveaux tourments !

KJV ²⁶ I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
