KJV ¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

S21 ¹ Après cela, Job parla enfin, et il maudit le jour de sa naissance.

WLC ¹ אַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֗ן פָּתַ֤ח אִיּוֹב֙ אֶת־ פִּ֔יהוּ וַיְקַלֵּ֖ל אֶת־ יוֹמֽוֹ׃

KJV ² And Job spake, and said,

S21 ² Il s'exprima en disant:

WLC ² וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

KJV ³ Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

S21 ³ «Qu'ils disparaissent, le jour où je suis né
et la nuit qui a dit: ‘Un garçon vigoureux a été conçu!'

WLC ³ יֹ֣אבַד י֭וֹם אִוָּ֣לֶד בּ֑וֹ וְהַלַּ֥יְלָה אָ֝מַ֗ר הֹ֣רָה גָֽבֶר׃

KJV ⁴ Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

S21 ⁴ Que ce jour se change en ténèbres,
que de là-haut Dieu ne s'en occupe pas
et que la lumière du jour ne l'éclaire plus!

WLC ⁴ הַיּ֥וֹם הַה֗וּא יְֽהִ֫י חֹ֥שֶׁךְ אַֽל־ יִדְרְשֵׁ֣הוּ אֱל֣וֹהַּ מִמָּ֑עַל וְאַל־ תּוֹפַ֖ע עָלָ֣יו נְהָרָֽה׃

KJV ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

S21 ⁵ Que les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort le revendiquent,
que des nuages épais s'installent au-dessus de lui
et que de sombres phénomènes l'assaillent!

WLC ⁵ יִגְאָלֻ֡הוּ חֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְ֭צַלְמָוֶת תִּשְׁכָּן־ עָלָ֣יו עֲנָנָ֑ה יְ֝בַעֲתֻ֗הוּ כִּֽמְרִ֥ירֵי יֽוֹם׃

KJV ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

S21 ⁶ Que l'obscurité s'empare de cette nuit-là!
Qu'elle n'ait pas sa place parmi les jours de l'année,
qu'elle n'entre pas dans le décompte des mois!

WLC ⁶ הַלַּ֥יְלָה הַהוּא֮ יִקָּחֵ֪ה֫וּ אֹ֥פֶל אַל־ יִ֭חַדְּ בִּימֵ֣י שָׁנָ֑ה בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר יְ֝רָחִ֗ים אַל־ יָבֹֽא׃

KJV ⁷ Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

S21 ⁷ Oui, que cette nuit soit stérile,
que la joie en soit exclue!

WLC ⁷ הִנֵּ֤ה הַלַּ֣יְלָה הַ֭הוּא יְהִ֣י גַלְמ֑וּד אַל־ תָּבֹ֖א רְנָנָ֣ה בֽוֹ׃

KJV ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

S21 ⁸ Qu'elle soit la cible de ceux qui maudissent les jours,
de ceux qui savent exciter le léviathan!

WLC ⁸ יִקְּבֻ֥הוּ אֹרְרֵי־ י֑וֹם הָ֝עֲתִידִ֗ים עֹרֵ֥ר לִוְיָתָֽן׃

KJV ⁹ Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

S21 ⁹ Que les étoiles de son crépuscule s'obscurcissent,
qu'elle attende sans succès la lumière
et ne voie pas les lueurs de l'aurore!

WLC ⁹ יֶחְשְׁכוּ֮ כּוֹכְבֵ֪י נִ֫שְׁפּ֥וֹ יְקַו־ לְא֥וֹר וָאַ֑יִן וְאַל־ יִ֝רְאֶ֗ה בְּעַפְעַפֵּי־ שָֽׁחַר׃

KJV ¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

S21 ¹⁰ En effet, elle n'a pas fermé les portes du ventre qui m'a porté,
pour m'empêcher de connaître le malheur.

WLC ¹⁰ כִּ֤י לֹ֣א סָ֭גַר דַּלְתֵ֣י בִטְנִ֑י וַיַּסְתֵּ֥ר עָ֝מָ֗ל מֵעֵינָֽי׃

KJV ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

S21 ¹¹ »Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort dans le ventre maternel?
Pourquoi n'ai-je pas expiré au sortir du ventre de ma mère?

WLC ¹¹ לָ֤מָּה לֹּ֣א מֵרֶ֣חֶם אָמ֑וּת מִבֶּ֖טֶן יָצָ֣אתִי וְאֶגְוָֽע׃

KJV ¹² Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

S21 ¹² Pourquoi ai-je trouvé des genoux pour m'accueillir
et des seins pour m'allaiter?

WLC ¹² מַ֭דּוּעַ קִדְּמ֣וּנִי בִרְכָּ֑יִם וּמַה־ שָּׁ֝דַ֗יִם כִּ֣י אִינָֽק׃

KJV ¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

S21 ¹³ En effet, maintenant je serais couché, tranquille,
je dormirais en ce moment, en plein repos,

WLC ¹³ כִּֽי־ עַ֭תָּה שָׁכַ֣בְתִּי וְאֶשְׁק֑וֹט יָ֝שַׁ֗נְתִּי אָ֤ז ׀ יָנ֬וּחַֽ לִֽי׃

KJV ¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth, which build desolate places for themselves;

S21 ¹⁴ avec les rois et les conseillers de la terre
qui se sont construit des monuments aujourd'hui en ruine,

WLC ¹⁴ עִם־ מְ֭לָכִים וְיֹ֣עֲצֵי אָ֑רֶץ הַבֹּנִ֖ים חֳרָב֣וֹת לָֽמוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁵ Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

S21 ¹⁵ ou avec les princes qui possédaient de l'or
et qui accumulaient de l'argent dans leurs maisons.

WLC ¹⁵ א֣וֹ עִם־ שָׂ֭רִים זָהָ֣ב לָהֶ֑ם הַֽמְמַלְאִ֖ים בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם כָּֽסֶף׃

KJV ¹⁶ Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

S21 ¹⁶ Ou bien, comme l'enfant mort-né qui est resté caché, je n'existerais pas,
pareil aux tout-petits qui n'ont pas vu la lumière.

WLC ¹⁶ א֤וֹ כְנֵ֣פֶל טָ֭מוּן לֹ֣א אֶהְיֶ֑ה כְּ֝עֹלְלִ֗ים לֹא־ רָ֥אוּ אֽוֹר׃

KJV ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

S21 ¹⁷ Là, les méchants cessent de s'agiter,
là se reposent ceux qui sont fatigués, sans force.

WLC ¹⁷ שָׁ֣ם רְ֭שָׁעִים חָ֣דְלוּ רֹ֑גֶז וְשָׁ֥ם יָ֝נ֗וּחוּ יְגִ֣יעֵי כֹֽחַ׃

KJV ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

S21 ¹⁸ Les prisonniers s'y retrouvent tous en paix,
ils n'entendent plus la voix de l'oppresseur.

WLC ¹⁸ יַ֭חַד אֲסִירִ֣ים שַׁאֲנָ֑נוּ לֹ֥א שָׁ֝מְע֗וּ ק֣וֹל נֹגֵֽשׂ׃

KJV ¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

S21 ¹⁹ Là, petits et grands sont réunis,
l'esclave n'est plus soumis à son maître.

WLC ¹⁹ קָטֹ֣ן וְ֭גָדוֹל שָׁ֣ם ה֑וּא וְ֝עֶ֗בֶד חָפְשִׁ֥י מֵאֲדֹנָֽיו׃

KJV ²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

S21 ²⁰ »Pourquoi Dieu donne-t-il la lumière à celui qui souffre,
la vie à ceux qui connaissent l'amertume,

WLC ²⁰ לָ֤מָּה יִתֵּ֣ן לְעָמֵ֣ל א֑וֹר וְ֝חַיִּ֗ים לְמָ֣רֵי נָֽפֶשׁ׃

KJV ²¹ Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

S21 ²¹ qui attendent sans succès la mort
et la recherchent plus qu'un trésor,

WLC ²¹ הַֽמְחַכִּ֣ים לַמָּ֣וֶת וְאֵינֶ֑נּוּ וַֽ֝יַּחְפְּרֻ֗הוּ מִמַּטְמוֹנִֽים׃

KJV ²² Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

S21 ²² qui se réjouiraient,
tout heureux et ravis, s'ils trouvaient le tombeau,

WLC ²² הַשְּׂמֵחִ֥ים אֱלֵי־ גִ֑יל יָ֝שִׂ֗ישׂוּ כִּ֣י יִמְצְאוּ־ קָֽבֶר׃

KJV ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

S21 ²³ à l'homme incapable de savoir où aller
et que Dieu cerne de tous les côtés?

WLC ²³ לְ֭גֶבֶר אֲשֶׁר־ דַּרְכּ֣וֹ נִסְתָּ֑רָה וַיָּ֖סֶךְ אֱל֣וֹהַּ בַּעֲדֽוֹ׃

KJV ²⁴ For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

S21 ²⁴ »En effet, la seule nourriture qui se présente à moi, ce sont mes soupirs,
et mes cris de détresse déferlent comme l'eau.

WLC ²⁴ כִּֽי־ לִפְנֵ֣י לַ֭חְמִי אַנְחָתִ֣י תָבֹ֑א וַֽיִּתְּכ֥וּ כַ֝מַּ֗יִם שַׁאֲגֹתָֽי׃

KJV ²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

S21 ²⁵ Ce dont j'ai peur, c'est ce qui m'arrive;
ce que je redoute, c'est ce qui m'atteint.

WLC ²⁵ כִּ֤י פַ֣חַד פָּ֭חַדְתִּי וַיֶּאֱתָיֵ֑נִי וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָ֝גֹ֗רְתִּי יָ֣בֹא לִֽי׃

KJV ²⁶ I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

S21 ²⁶ Je n'ai ni tranquillité, ni paix, ni repos;
c'est la tourmente qui survient.»

WLC ²⁶ לֹ֤א שָׁלַ֨וְתִּי ׀ וְלֹ֖א שָׁקַ֥טְתִּי וְֽלֹא־ נָ֗חְתִּי וַיָּ֥בֹא רֹֽגֶז׃
