KJV 1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

VULC 1 [Parabolæ Salomonis, filii David, regis Israël,

KJV 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

VULC 2 ad sciendam sapientiam et disciplinam ;

KJV 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

VULC 3 ad intelligenda verba prudentiæ,
et suscipiendam eruditionem doctrinæ,
justitiam, et judicium, et æquitatem :

KJV 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

VULC 4 ut detur parvulis astutia,
adolescenti scientia et intellectus.

KJV 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

VULC 5 Audiens sapiens, sapientior erit,
et intelligens gubernacula possidebit.

KJV 6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

VULC 6 Animadvertet parabolam et interpretationem,
verba sapientum et ænigmata eorum.

KJV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

VULC 7 Timor Domini principium sapientiæ ;
sapientiam atque doctrinam stulti despiciunt.]

KJV 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

VULC 8 [Audi, fili mi, disciplinam patris tui,
et ne dimittas legem matris tuæ :

KJV 9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

VULC 9 ut addatur gratia capiti tuo,
et torques collo tuo.

KJV 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

VULC 10 Fili mi, si te lactaverint peccatores,
ne acquiescas eis.

KJV 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

VULC 11 Si dixerint : Veni nobiscum, insidiemur sanguini ;
abscondamus tendiculas contra insontem frustra ;

KJV 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

VULC 12 deglutiamus eum sicut infernus viventem,
et integrum quasi descendentem in lacum ;

KJV 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

VULC 13 omnem pretiosam substantiam reperiemus ;
implebimus domos nostras spoliis :

KJV 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

VULC 14 sortem mitte nobiscum,
marsupium unum sit omnium nostrum :

KJV 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

VULC 15 fili mi, ne ambules cum eis ;
prohibe pedem tuum a semitis eorum :

KJV 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

VULC 16 pedes enim illorum ad malum currunt,
et festinant ut effundant sanguinem.

KJV 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

VULC 17 Frustra autem jacitur rete
ante oculos pennatorum.

KJV 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

VULC 18 Ipsi quoque contra sanguinem suum insidiantur,
et moliuntur fraudes contra animas suas.

KJV 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

VULC 19 Sic semitæ omnis avari :
animas possidentium rapiunt.]

KJV 20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

VULC 20 [Sapientia foris prædicat ;
in plateis dat vocem suam :

KJV 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

VULC 21 in capite turbarum clamitat ;
in foribus portarum urbis profert verba sua, dicens :

KJV 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

VULC 22 Usquequo, parvuli, diligitis infantiam,
et stulti ea quæ sibi sunt noxia cupient,
et imprudentes odibunt scientiam ?

KJV 23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

VULC 23 convertimini ad correptionem meam.
En proferam vobis spiritum meum,
et ostendam vobis verba mea.

KJV 24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

VULC 24 Quia vocavi, et renuistis ;
extendi manum meam, et non fuit qui aspiceret :

KJV 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

VULC 25 despexistis omne consilium meum,
et increpationes meas neglexistis.

KJV 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

VULC 26 Ego quoque in interitu vestro ridebo,
et subsannabo cum vobis id quod timebatis advenerit.

KJV 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

VULC 27 Cum irruerit repentina calamitas,
et interitus quasi tempestas ingruerit ;
quando venerit super vos tribulatio et angustia :

KJV 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

VULC 28 tunc invocabunt me, et non exaudiam ;
mane consurgent, et non invenient me :

KJV 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

VULC 29 eo quod exosam habuerint disciplinam,
et timorem Domini non susceperint,

KJV 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

VULC 30 nec acquieverint consilio meo,
et detraxerint universæ correptioni meæ.

KJV 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

VULC 31 Comedent igitur fructus viæ suæ,
suisque consiliis saturabuntur.

KJV 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

VULC 32 Aversio parvulorum interficiet eos,
et prosperitas stultorum perdet illos.

KJV 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

VULC 33 Qui autem me audierit, absque terrore requiescet,
et abundantia perfruetur, timore malorum sublato.]
