¹ Il y a pour l'argent des lieux d'extraction ; Il y en a pour l'or qu'on affine.
² Le fer se tire de la poussière, Et de la pierre fondue sort l'airain.
³ L'homme a mis fin à l'obscurité ; Il explore, jusqu'aux dernières profondeurs, Les pierres cachées dans la plus sombre nuit.
⁴ Il creuse un puits loin des habitations ; Il est ignoré des passants, Il est suspendu, balancé loin des mortels.
⁵ La terre d'où sort le pain, On la bouleverse dans ses profondeurs comme par le feu.
⁶ Ces pierres fournissent le saphir, On y trouve de la poussière d'or.
⁷ C'est un chemin que l'aigle ne connaît pas, L'oeil du faucon ne l'a pas discerné,
⁸ Les fauves orgueilleux ne l'ont jamais foulé ; Le lion n'y passe pas.
⁹ L'homme porte la main sur le roc même, Il remue les montagnes de fond en comble ;
¹⁰ Il taille des tranchées dans les rochers ; Son oeil aperçoit toutes sortes de choses précieuses.
¹¹ Il arrête le suintement des eaux, Et il sort à la lumière les choses cachées.
¹² Mais la sagesse, où la trouver ? Où est le lieu de l'intelligence ?
¹³ L'homme ne connaît rien qui la vaille ; Elle ne se trouve pas dans le monde des vivants.
¹⁴ L'abîme dit : Elle n'est point en moi ! La mer dit : Elle n'est point chez moi !
¹⁵ On ne l'obtient pas contre de l'or pur, Et pour la payer on ne pèse pas d'argent.
¹⁶ On ne la met pas dans la balance avec l'or d'Ophir, Avec l'onyx précieux et le saphir.
¹⁷ On ne peut lui comparer l'or ni le verre ; On ne l'échange pas contre des vases d'or fin.
¹⁸ Le corail et le cristal ne sont rien auprès d'elle ; Acquérir la sagesse vaut mieux que les perles.
¹⁹ On ne peut lui comparer la topaze d'Ethiopie, On ne la met pas dans la balance avec l'or pur.
²⁰ Mais la sagesse, d'où vient-elle ? Où est le lieu de l'intelligence ?
²¹ Elle est voilée aux yeux de tout vivant, Elle est cachée aux oiseaux des cieux.
²² Le lieu de destruction et la mort disent : Nous en avons entendu parler.
²³ C'est Dieu qui en discerne le chemin, C'est lui qui connaît son lieu ;
²⁴ Car lui regarde jusqu'aux bouts de la terre : Il voit tout ce qui se passe sous les cieux.
²⁵ Quand il réglait le poids du vent, Qu'il fixait la mesure des eaux,
²⁶ Quand il donnait à la pluie ses lois, Qu'il traçait la route aux éclairs,
²⁷ Alors il vit la sagesse et la manifesta ; Il l'établit et même il la sonda.
²⁸ Il dit à l'homme : La crainte du Seigneur, c'est là la sagesse ; S'écarter du mal, c'est là l'intelligence.

¹ Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
² Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
³ He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
⁴ The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
⁵ As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
⁶ The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
⁷ There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
⁸ The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
⁹ He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
¹⁰ He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
¹¹ He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
¹² But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
¹³ Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
¹⁴ The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
¹⁷ The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
²⁰ Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
²¹ Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
²² Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
²³ God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
²⁴ For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
²⁵ To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
²⁷ Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

²² אֲבַדּ֣וֹן וָ֭מָוֶת אָ֣מְר֑וּ בְּ֝אָזְנֵ֗ינוּ שָׁמַ֥עְנוּ שִׁמְעָֽהּ׃
²³ אֱ֭לֹהִים הֵבִ֣ין דַּרְכָּ֑הּ וְ֝ה֗וּא יָדַ֥ע אֶת־ מְקוֹמָֽהּ׃

²⁶ בַּעֲשֹׂת֣וֹ לַמָּטָ֣ר חֹ֑ק וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֽוֹת׃
²⁷ אָ֣ז רָ֭אָהּ וַֽיְסַפְּרָ֑הּ הֱ֝כִינָ֗הּ וְגַם־ חֲקָרָֽהּ׃
²⁸ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר ׀ לָֽאָדָ֗ם הֵ֤ן יִרְאַ֣ת אֲ֭דֹנָי הִ֣יא חָכְמָ֑ה וְס֖וּר מֵרָ֣ע בִּינָֽה׃
