BAN ² Car je vous donne une bonne doctrine ;
N'abandonnez point mes enseignements.

KJV ² For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

WLC ² כִּ֤י לֶ֣קַח ט֭וֹב נָתַ֣תִּי לָכֶ֑ם תּֽ֝וֹרָתִ֗י אַֽל־ תַּעֲזֹֽבוּ׃

BAN ³ Car j'ai été, moi aussi, un fils devant mon père,
Un enfant tendre et unique auprès de ma mère.

KJV ³ For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

WLC ³ כִּי־ בֵ֭ן הָיִ֣יתִי לְאָבִ֑י רַ֥ךְ וְ֝יָחִ֗יד לִפְנֵ֥י אִמִּֽי׃

BAN ⁴ Il m'a instruit et m'a dit :
Que ton coeur retienne mes paroles !
Observe mes préceptes, et tu vivras.

KJV ⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּרֵ֗נִי וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לִ֗י יִֽתְמָךְ־ דְּבָרַ֥י לִבֶּ֑ךָ שְׁמֹ֖ר מִצְוֺתַ֣י וֶֽחְיֵֽה׃

BAN ⁵ Acquiers la sagesse ; acquiers l'intelligence !
Ne l'oublie pas et ne t'écarte pas des paroles de ma bouche.

KJV ⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

WLC ⁵ קְנֵ֣ה חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה בִינָ֑ה אַל־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח וְאַל־ תֵּ֝֗ט מֵֽאִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃

BAN ⁶ Ne l'abandonne pas, et elle te gardera ;
Aime-la, et elle te protégera.

KJV ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

WLC ⁶ אַל־ תַּעַזְבֶ֥הָ וְתִשְׁמְרֶ֑ךָּ אֱהָבֶ֥הָ וְתִצְּרֶֽךָּ׃

BAN ⁷ Le commencement de la sagesse, c'est : Acquiers la sagesse !
Acquiers l'intelligence au prix de tout ton avoir.

KJV ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

WLC ⁷ רֵאשִׁ֣ית חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה חָכְמָ֑ה וּבְכָל־ קִ֝נְיָנְךָ֗ קְנֵ֣ה בִינָֽה׃

BAN ⁸ Exalte-la, et elle t'élèvera ;
Elle fera ta gloire, si tu l'embrasses.

KJV ⁸ Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

WLC ⁸ סַלְסְלֶ֥הָ וּֽתְרוֹמְמֶ֑ךָּ תְּ֝כַבֵּ֗דְךָ כִּ֣י תְחַבְּקֶֽנָּה׃

BAN ⁹ Elle placera sur ta tête une couronne gracieuse
Elle te fera don d'un diadème magnifique.

KJV ⁹ She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

WLC ⁹ תִּתֵּ֣ן לְ֭רֹאשְׁךָ לִוְיַת־ חֵ֑ן עֲטֶ֖רֶת תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת תְּמַגְּנֶֽךָּ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Ecoute, mon fils, et reçois mes paroles ;
Les années de ta vie en seront multipliées.

KJV ¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.

WLC ¹⁰ שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִי וְקַ֣ח אֲמָרָ֑י וְיִרְבּ֥וּ לְ֝ךָ֗ שְׁנ֣וֹת חַיִּֽים׃

BAN ¹¹ C'est la voie de la sagesse que je te montre ;
Je te fais marcher dans les sentiers de la droiture

KJV ¹¹ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

WLC ¹¹ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ חָ֭כְמָה הֹרֵתִ֑יךָ הִ֝דְרַכְתִּ֗יךָ בְּמַעְגְּלֵי־ יֹֽשֶׁר׃

BAN ¹² Quand tu marcheras, tes pas ne seront pas gênés ;
Si tu cours, tu ne trébucheras pas.

KJV ¹² When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

WLC ¹² בְּֽ֭לֶכְתְּךָ לֹא־ יֵצַ֣ר צַעֲדֶ֑ךָ וְאִם־ תָּ֝ר֗וּץ לֹ֣א תִכָּשֵֽׁל׃

BAN ¹³ Saisis l'instruction, ne la lâche pas !
Garde-la, car elle est ta vie.

KJV ¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

WLC ¹³ הַחֲזֵ֣ק בַּמּוּסָ֣ר אַל־ תֶּ֑רֶף נִ֝צְּרֶ֗הָ כִּי־ הִ֥יא חַיֶּֽיךָ׃

BAN ¹⁴ Ne marche pas dans la voie des méchants ;
Ne t'avance pas sur le chemin des hommes mauvais.

KJV ¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

WLC ¹⁴ בְּאֹ֣רַח רְ֭שָׁעִים אַל־ תָּבֹ֑א וְאַל־ תְּ֝אַשֵּׁ֗ר בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ רָעִֽים׃

BAN ¹⁵ Evite-le ! N'y passe pas !
Eloigne-t-en et passe outre !

KJV ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

WLC ¹⁵ פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ אַל־ תַּעֲבָר־ בּ֑וֹ שְׂטֵ֖ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וַעֲבֽוֹר׃

BAN ¹⁶ Car ils ne dormiraient pas, s'ils n'avaient fait du mal ;
Le sommeil leur serait ravi, s'ils n'avaient fait tomber quelqu'un.

KJV ¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

WLC ¹⁶ כִּ֤י לֹ֣א יִֽ֭שְׁנוּ אִם־ לֹ֣א יָרֵ֑עוּ וְֽנִגְזְלָ֥ה שְׁ֝נָתָ֗ם אִם־ לֹ֥א

BAN ¹⁷ Car ils se nourrissent du pain de la perversité,
Ils boivent le vin de la violence.

KJV ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

WLC ¹⁷ כִּ֣י לָ֭חֲמוּ לֶ֣חֶם רֶ֑שַׁע וְיֵ֖ין חֲמָסִ֣ים יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃

BAN ¹⁸ Le sentier des justes est comme la lumière resplendissante,
Qui va grandissant jusqu'au plein jour.

KJV ¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

WLC ¹⁸ וְאֹ֣רַח צַ֭דִּיקִים כְּא֣וֹר נֹ֑גַהּ הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וָ֝א֗וֹר עַד־ נְכ֥וֹן הַיּֽוֹם׃

BAN ¹⁹ La voie des méchants est comme l'obscurité ;
Ils ne voient pas ce qui les fera trébucher.

KJV ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

WLC ¹⁹ דֶּ֣רֶךְ רְ֭שָׁעִים כָּֽאֲפֵלָ֑ה לֹ֥א יָ֝דְע֗וּ בַּמֶּ֥ה יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃

BAN ²⁰ Mon fils, sois attentif à mes paroles,
Incline tes oreilles à mes discours.

KJV ²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

WLC ²⁰ בְּ֭נִי לִדְבָרַ֣י הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה לַ֝אֲמָרַ֗י הַט־ אָזְנֶֽךָ׃

BAN ²¹ Qu'ils ne s'éloignent pas de tes yeux ;
Garde-les au fond de ton coeur.

KJV ²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

WLC ²¹ אַל־ יַלִּ֥יזוּ מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ שָׁ֝מְרֵ֗ם בְּת֣וֹךְ לְבָבֶֽךָ׃

BAN ²² Car ils sont la vie de ceux qui les trouvent
Et la santé de leur corps tout entier.

KJV ²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

WLC ²² כִּֽי־ חַיִּ֣ים הֵ֭ם לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם וּֽלְכָל־ בְּשָׂר֥וֹ מַרְפֵּֽא׃

BAN ²³ Garde ton coeur plus que tout ce qui se garde,
Car c'est de lui que procèdent les sources de la vie.

KJV ²³ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

WLC ²³ מִֽכָּל־ מִ֭שְׁמָר נְצֹ֣ר לִבֶּ֑ךָ כִּֽי־ מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ תּוֹצְא֥וֹת חַיִּֽים׃

BAN ²⁴ Ecarte de toi la fausseté de la bouche ;
Eloigne de toi la fourberie des lèvres !

KJV ²⁴ Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

WLC ²⁴ הָסֵ֣ר מִ֭מְּךָ עִקְּשׁ֣וּת פֶּ֑ה וּלְז֥וּת שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם הַרְחֵ֥ק מִמֶּֽךָּ׃

BAN ²⁵ Que tes yeux regardent droit devant toi,
Et que tes paupières se dirigent droit en avant !

KJV ²⁵ Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

WLC ²⁵ עֵ֭ינֶיךָ לְנֹ֣כַח יַבִּ֑יטוּ וְ֝עַפְעַפֶּ֗יךָ יַיְשִׁ֥רוּ נֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃

BAN ²⁶ Aplanis le sentier de ton pied ;
Et que toutes tes voies soient assurées !

KJV ²⁶ Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

WLC ²⁶ פַּ֭לֵּס מַעְגַּ֣ל רַגְלֶ֑ךָ וְֽכָל־ דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ יִכֹּֽנוּ׃

BAN ²⁷ Ne t'écarte ni à droite, ni à gauche ;
Détourne ton pied du mal !

KJV ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

WLC ²⁷ אַֽל־ תֵּט־ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול הָסֵ֖ר רַגְלְךָ֣ מֵרָֽע׃

BAN ¹ Mon fils, sois attentif à ma sagesse,
Incline ton oreille à mon intelligence,

KJV ¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:

WLC ¹ בְּ֭נִי לְחָכְמָתִ֣י הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה לִ֝תְבוּנָתִ֗י הַט־ אָזְנֶֽךָ׃

BAN ² Pour que tu gardes les avis sensés
Et que tes lèvres retiennent la connaissance.

KJV ² That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

WLC ² לִשְׁמֹ֥ר מְזִמּ֑וֹת וְ֝דַ֗עַת שְׂפָתֶ֥יךָ יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃

BAN ³ Car les lèvres de l'étrangère distillent du miel,
Son gosier est plus onctueux que l'huile.

KJV ³ For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

WLC ³ כִּ֤י נֹ֣פֶת תִּ֭טֹּפְנָה שִׂפְתֵ֣י זָרָ֑ה וְחָלָ֖ק מִשֶּׁ֣מֶן חִכָּֽהּ׃

BAN ⁴ Mais la fin qu'elle prépare est amère comme l'absinthe,
Cruelle comme une épée à deux tranchants.

KJV ⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

WLC ⁴ וְֽ֭אַחֲרִיתָהּ מָרָ֣ה כַֽלַּעֲנָ֑ה חַ֝דָּ֗ה כְּחֶ֣רֶב פִּיּֽוֹת׃

BAN ⁵ Ses pieds descendent vers la mort ;
Au sépulcre tendent ses pas.

KJV ⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

WLC ⁵ רַ֭גְלֶיהָ יֹרְד֣וֹת מָ֑וֶת שְׁ֝א֗וֹל צְעָדֶ֥יהָ יִתְמֹֽכוּ׃

BAN ⁶ Pour qu'elle ne prenne pas le sentier de la vie,
Ses voies s'égarent elle ne sait où.

KJV ⁶ Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.

WLC ⁶ אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים פֶּן־ תְּפַלֵּ֑ס נָע֥וּ מַ֝עְגְּלֹתֶ֗יהָ לֹ֣א תֵדָֽע׃

BAN ⁷ Maintenant donc, mes fils, écoutez-moi ;
Ne vous détournez pas des paroles de ma bouche !

KJV ⁷ Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

WLC ⁷ וְעַתָּ֣ה בָ֭נִים שִׁמְעוּ־ לִ֑י וְאַל־ תָּ֝ס֗וּרוּ מֵאִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃

BAN ⁸ Eloigne d'elle ton chemin
Et ne t'approche pas des portes de sa maison,

KJV ⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

WLC ⁸ הַרְחֵ֣ק מֵעָלֶ֣יהָ דַרְכֶּ֑ךָ וְאַל־ תִּ֝קְרַ֗ב אֶל־ פֶּ֥תַח בֵּיתָֽהּ׃

BAN ⁹ De peur que tu ne livres ta vigueur à d'autres
Et tes années à un homme cruel ;

KJV ⁹ Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:

WLC ⁹ פֶּן־ תִּתֵּ֣ן לַאֲחֵרִ֣ים הוֹדֶ֑ךָ וּ֝שְׁנֹתֶ֗יךָ לְאַכְזָרִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁰ De peur que des étrangers ne se rassasient de ton bien,
Et que le fruit de tes peines ne passe dans la maison d'autrui ;

KJV ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

WLC ¹⁰ פֶּֽן־ יִשְׂבְּע֣וּ זָרִ֣ים כֹּחֶ֑ךָ וַ֝עֲצָבֶ֗יךָ בְּבֵ֣ית נָכְרִֽי׃

BAN ¹¹ Que tu ne te lamentes, près de ta fin,
Quand ton corps et ta chair se consumeront,

KJV ¹¹ And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

WLC ¹¹ וְנָהַמְתָּ֥ בְאַחֲרִיתֶ֑ךָ בִּכְל֥וֹת בְּ֝שָׂרְךָ֗ וּשְׁאֵרֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹² Et que tu ne dises : Comment ai-je pu haïr la discipline ?
Comment mon coeur a-t-il dédaigné la répréhension,

KJV ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

WLC ¹² וְֽאָמַרְתָּ֗ אֵ֭יךְ שָׂנֵ֣אתִי מוּסָ֑ר וְ֝תוֹכַ֗חַת נָאַ֥ץ לִבִּֽי׃

BAN ¹³ Et n'ai-je point écouté la voix de mes maîtres,
Ni incliné l'oreille vers ceux qui m'enseignaient ?

KJV ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

WLC ¹³ וְֽלֹא־ שָׁ֭מַעְתִּי בְּק֣וֹל מוֹרָ֑י וְ֝לִֽמְלַמְּדַ֗י לֹא־ הִטִּ֥יתִי אָזְנִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁴ Peu s'en est fallu que je ne sois tombé dans tous les maux,
Au milieu du peuple et de l'assemblée !

KJV ¹⁴ I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

WLC ¹⁴ כִּ֭מְעַט הָיִ֣יתִי בְכָל־ רָ֑ע בְּת֖וֹךְ קָהָ֣ל וְעֵדָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁵ Bois les eaux de ta citerne
Et celles qui jaillissent de ton puits.

KJV ¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

WLC ¹⁵ שְׁתֵה־ מַ֥יִם מִבּוֹרֶ֑ךָ וְ֝נֹזְלִ֗ים מִתּ֥וֹךְ בְּאֵרֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹⁶ Tes sources doivent-elles se répandre au dehors,
Tes ruisseaux à travers les rues ?

KJV ¹⁶ Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

WLC ¹⁶ יָפ֣וּצוּ מַעְיְנֹתֶ֣יךָ ח֑וּצָה בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת פַּלְגֵי־ מָֽיִם׃

BAN ¹⁷ Qu'ils soient pour toi seul,
Et non pour des étrangers avec toi !

KJV ¹⁷ Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.

WLC ¹⁷ יִֽהְיוּ־ לְךָ֥ לְבַדֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֖ין לְזָרִ֣ים אִתָּֽךְ׃

BAN ¹⁸ Que ta source soit bénie !
Fais ta joie de la femme de ta jeunesse.

KJV ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

WLC ¹⁸ יְהִֽי־ מְקוֹרְךָ֥ בָר֑וּךְ וּ֝שְׂמַ֗ח מֵאֵ֥שֶׁת נְעוּרֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹⁹ Biche aimable, gracieuse gazelle, que ses charmes t'enivrent toujours !
Sois sans cesse épris de son amour.

KJV ¹⁹ Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

WLC ¹⁹ אַיֶּ֥לֶת אֲהָבִ֗ים וְֽיַעֲלַ֫ת־ חֵ֥ן דַּ֭דֶּיהָ יְרַוֻּ֣ךָ בְכָל־ עֵ֑ת בְּ֝אַהֲבָתָ֗הּ תִּשְׁגֶּ֥ה תָמִֽיד׃

BAN ²⁰ Pourquoi, mon fils, t'éprendrais-tu d'une étrangère,
Embrasserais-tu le sein d'une inconnue ?

KJV ²⁰ And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

WLC ²⁰ וְלָ֤מָּה תִשְׁגֶּ֣ה בְנִ֣י בְזָרָ֑ה וּ֝תְחַבֵּ֗ק חֵ֣ק נָכְרִיָּֽה׃

BAN ²¹ Car les voies de l'homme sont devant les yeux de l'Eternel ;
Il considère tous ses sentiers.

KJV ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

WLC ²¹ כִּ֤י נֹ֨כַח ׀ עֵינֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה דַּרְכֵי־ אִ֑ישׁ וְֽכָל־ מַעְגְּלֹתָ֥יו מְפַלֵּֽס׃

BAN ²² Le méchant sera saisi par ses iniquités,
Il sera pris par le filet de son péché.

KJV ²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

WLC ²² עַֽווֹנוֹתָ֗יו יִלְכְּדֻנ֥וֹ אֶת־ הָרָשָׁ֑ע וּבְחַבְלֵ֥י חַ֝טָּאת֗וֹ יִתָּמֵֽךְ׃

BAN ²³ Il mourra pour n'avoir pas voulu de discipline,
Il ira errant par l'excès de sa folie.

KJV ²³ He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

WLC ²³ ה֗וּא יָ֭מוּת בְּאֵ֣ין מוּסָ֑ר וּבְרֹ֖ב אִוַּלְתּ֣וֹ יִשְׁגֶּֽה׃

BAN ¹ Mon fils, si tu as cautionné ton prochain,
Si tu t'es engagé pour un autre,

KJV ¹ My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

WLC ¹ בְּ֭נִי אִם־ עָרַ֣בְתָּ לְרֵעֶ֑ךָ תָּקַ֖עְתָּ לַזָּ֣ר כַּפֶּֽיךָ׃

BAN ² Si tu es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche,
Et que tu sois pris par les paroles de ta bouche,

KJV ² Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

WLC ² נוֹקַ֥שְׁתָּ בְאִמְרֵי־ פִ֑יךָ נִ֝לְכַּ֗דְתָּ בְּאִמְרֵי־ פִֽיךָ׃

BAN ³ Ah ! fais ceci, mon fils ! dégage-toi,
Car tu es tombé entre les mains de ton prochain.
Va, prosterne-toi ; presse-le instamment.

KJV ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

WLC ³ עֲשֵׂ֨ה זֹ֥את אֵפ֪וֹא ׀ בְּנִ֡י וְֽהִנָּצֵ֗ל כִּ֘י בָ֤אתָ בְכַף־ רֵעֶ֑ךָ לֵ֥ךְ הִ֝תְרַפֵּ֗ס וּרְהַ֥ב רֵעֶֽיךָ׃

BAN ⁴ Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux,
Ni repos à tes paupières ;

KJV ⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

WLC ⁴ אַל־ תִּתֵּ֣ן שֵׁנָ֣ה לְעֵינֶ֑יךָ וּ֝תְנוּמָ֗ה לְעַפְעַפֶּֽיךָ׃

BAN ⁵ Dégage-toi comme la gazelle de la main [du chasseur],
Comme l'oiseau de celle de l'oiseleur.

KJV ⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

WLC ⁵ הִ֭נָּצֵל כִּצְבִ֣י מִיָּ֑ד וּ֝כְצִפּ֗וֹר מִיַּ֥ד יָקֽוּשׁ׃

BAN ⁶ Va vers la fourmi, paresseux !
Observe ses allures, et deviens sage.

KJV ⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

WLC ⁶ לֵֽךְ־ אֶל־ נְמָלָ֥ה עָצֵ֑ל רְאֵ֖ה דְרָכֶ֣יהָ וַחֲכָֽם׃

BAN ⁷ Elle n'a ni juge,
Ni contremaître, ni chef.

KJV ⁷ Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

WLC ⁷ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֵֽין־ לָ֥הּ קָצִ֗ין שֹׁטֵ֥ר וּמֹשֵֽׁל׃

BAN ⁸ En été elle prépare sa nourriture ;
Pendant la moisson, elle amasse de quoi manger.

KJV ⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

WLC ⁸ תָּכִ֣ין בַּקַּ֣יִץ לַחְמָ֑הּ אָגְרָ֥ה בַ֝קָּצִ֗יר מַאֲכָלָֽהּ׃

BAN ⁹ Jusques à quand, paresseux, resteras-tu couché ?
Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil ?

KJV ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

WLC ⁹ עַד־ מָתַ֖י עָצֵ֥ל ׀ תִּשְׁכָּ֑ב מָ֝תַ֗י תָּק֥וּם מִשְּׁנָתֶֽךָ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement,
Un peu croiser les bras au lit !

KJV ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

WLC ¹⁰ מְעַ֣ט שֵׁ֭נוֹת מְעַ֣ט תְּנוּמ֑וֹת מְעַ֓ט ׀ חִבֻּ֖ק יָדַ֣יִם לִשְׁכָּֽב׃

BAN ¹¹ Et la pauvreté fondra sur toi comme un rôdeur,
Et la misère, comme un homme armé.

KJV ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

WLC ¹¹ וּבָֽא־ כִמְהַלֵּ֥ךְ רֵאשֶׁ֑ךָ וּ֝מַחְסֹֽרְךָ֗ כְּאִ֣ישׁ מָגֵֽן׃

BAN ¹² C'est un homme de rien, un scélérat,
Celui qui marche la fourberie dans la bouche,

KJV ¹² A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

WLC ¹² אָדָ֣ם בְּ֭לִיַּעַל אִ֣ישׁ אָ֑וֶן ה֝וֹלֵ֗ךְ עִקְּשׁ֥וּת פֶּֽה׃

BAN ¹³ Clignant des yeux, parlant des pieds,
Faisant signe des doigts.

KJV ¹³ He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

WLC ¹³ קֹרֵ֣ץ בְּ֭עֵינָו מֹלֵ֣ל בְּרַגְלָ֑ו מֹ֝רֶ֗ה בְּאֶצְבְּעֹתָֽיו׃

BAN ¹⁴ La perversité est dans son coeur, il fomente le mal sans cesse,
Il déchaîne les disputes.

KJV ¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

WLC ¹⁴ תַּֽהְפֻּכ֨וֹת ׀ בְּלִבּ֗וֹ חֹרֵ֣שׁ רָ֣ע בְּכָל־ עֵ֑ת יְשַׁלֵּֽחַ׃

BAN ¹⁵ C'est pourquoi sa ruine surviendra soudain,
Il sera tout à coup brisé sans espoir de guérison.

KJV ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

WLC ¹⁵ עַל־ כֵּ֗ן פִּ֭תְאֹם יָב֣וֹא אֵיד֑וֹ פֶּ֥תַע יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר וְאֵ֣ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃

BAN ¹⁶ Il y a six choses que hait l'Eternel,
Et sept qui lui sont en abomination :

KJV ¹⁶ These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

WLC ¹⁶ שֶׁשׁ־ הֵ֭נָּה שָׂנֵ֣א יְהוָ֑ה וְ֝שֶׁ֗בַע נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁷ Les yeux hautains, la langue mensongère,
Les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,

KJV ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

WLC ¹⁷ עֵינַ֣יִם רָ֭מוֹת לְשׁ֣וֹן שָׁ֑קֶר וְ֝יָדַ֗יִם שֹׁפְכ֥וֹת דָּם־ נָקִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁸ Le coeur qui fomente des projets iniques,
Les pieds qui se hâtent de courir au mal,

KJV ¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

WLC ¹⁸ לֵ֗ב חֹ֭רֵשׁ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת אָ֑וֶן רַגְלַ֥יִם מְ֝מַהֲר֗וֹת לָר֥וּץ לָֽרָעָה׃

BAN ¹⁹ Celui qui, faux témoin, profère des mensonges,
Et celui qui déchaîne les disputes parmi les frères.

KJV ¹⁹ A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

WLC ¹⁹ יָפִ֣יחַ כְּ֭זָבִים עֵ֣ד שָׁ֑קֶר וּמְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ מְ֝דָנִ֗ים בֵּ֣ין אַחִֽים׃

BAN ²⁰ Garde, mon fils, les préceptes de ton père,
Et ne repousse pas les leçons de ta mère.

KJV ²⁰ My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

WLC ²⁰ נְצֹ֣ר בְּ֭נִי מִצְוַ֣ת אָבִ֑יךָ וְאַל־ תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ תּוֹרַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ׃

BAN ²¹ Tiens-les toujours liés sur ton coeur,
Attache-les à ton cou !

KJV ²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

WLC ²¹ קָשְׁרֵ֣ם עַל־ לִבְּךָ֣ תָמִ֑יד עָ֝נְדֵ֗ם עַל־ גַּרְגְּרֹתֶֽךָ׃

BAN ²² Quand tu marcheras, ils te guideront
Quand tu t'éveilleras, ils converseront avec toi.

KJV ²² When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

WLC ²² בְּהִתְהַלֶּכְךָ֨ ׀ תַּנְחֶ֬ה אֹתָ֗ךְ בְּֽ֭שָׁכְבְּךָ תִּשְׁמֹ֣ר עָלֶ֑יךָ וַ֝הֲקִיצ֗וֹתָ הִ֣יא תְשִׂיחֶֽךָ׃

BAN ²³ Car le précepte est une lampe, l'instruction une lumière ;
Les remontrances de la sagesse sont le chemin de la vie,

KJV ²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

WLC ²³ כִּ֤י נֵ֣ר מִ֭צְוָה וְת֣וֹרָה א֑וֹר וְדֶ֥רֶךְ חַ֝יִּ֗ים תּוֹכְח֥וֹת מוּסָֽר׃

BAN ²⁴ Pour te garder de la femme perverse,
De la langue doucereuse de l'étrangère.

KJV ²⁴ To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

WLC ²⁴ לִ֭שְׁמָרְךָ מֵאֵ֣שֶׁת רָ֑ע מֵֽ֝חֶלְקַ֗ת לָשׁ֥וֹן נָכְרִיָּֽה׃

BAN ²⁵ Ne convoite pas sa beauté dans ton coeur,
Qu'elle ne te captive pas par ses paupières !

KJV ²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

WLC ²⁵ אַל־ תַּחְמֹ֣ד יָ֭פְיָהּ בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ וְאַל־ תִּ֝קָּֽחֲךָ֗ בְּעַפְעַפֶּֽיהָ׃

BAN ²⁶ Car, à cause d'une débauchée, on est réduit à un morceau de pain,
Et la femme d'autrui tend un piège à une vie précieuse.

KJV ²⁶ For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.

WLC ²⁶ כִּ֤י בְעַד־ אִשָּׁ֥ה זוֹנָ֗ה עַֽד־ כִּכַּ֫ר לָ֥חֶם וְאֵ֥שֶׁת אִ֑ישׁ נֶ֖פֶשׁ יְקָרָ֣ה תָצֽוּד׃

BAN ²⁷ Quelqu'un peut-il prendre du feu dans son sein,
Sans que ses habits soient consumés ?

KJV ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

WLC ²⁷ הֲיַחְתֶּ֤ה אִ֓ישׁ אֵ֬שׁ בְּחֵיק֑וֹ וּ֝בְגָדָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִשָּׂרַֽפְנָה׃

BAN ²⁸ Quelqu'un peut-il marcher sur des charbons ardents,
Sans que ses pieds en soient brûlés ?

KJV ²⁸ Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

WLC ²⁸ אִם־ יְהַלֵּ֣ךְ אִ֭ישׁ עַל־ הַגֶּחָלִ֑ים וְ֝רַגְלָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִכָּוֶֽינָה׃

BAN ²⁹ Il en est de même pour celui qui va vers la femme d'autrui ;
Quiconque la touche ne reste pas impuni.

KJV ²⁹ So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

WLC ²⁹ כֵּ֗ן הַ֭בָּא אֶל־ אֵ֣שֶׁת רֵעֵ֑הוּ לֹ֥א יִ֝נָּקֶ֗ה כָּֽל־ הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּֽהּ׃

BAN ³⁰ On ne laisse pas impuni le voleur, lorsqu'il vole
Pour se rassasier, parce qu'il a faim.

KJV ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

WLC ³⁰ לֹא־ יָב֣וּזוּ לַ֭גַּנָּב כִּ֣י יִגְנ֑וֹב לְמַלֵּ֥א נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ כִּ֣י יִרְעָֽב׃

BAN ³¹ S'il est pris, il restituera le septuple ;
Il donnera tous les biens de sa maison.

KJV ³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

WLC ³¹ וְ֭נִמְצָא יְשַׁלֵּ֣ם שִׁבְעָתָ֑יִם אֶת־ כָּל־ ה֖וֹן בֵּית֣וֹ יִתֵּֽן׃

BAN ³² Celui qui commet adultère est dépourvu de sens ;
Qui veut se perdre lui-même, fera cela.

KJV ³² But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

WLC ³² נֹאֵ֣ף אִשָּׁ֣ה חֲסַר־ לֵ֑ב מַֽשְׁחִ֥ית נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ ה֣וּא יַעֲשֶֽׂנָּה׃

BAN ³³ Il trouvera des coups et de l'ignominie,
Sa honte ne s'effacera jamais.

KJV ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

WLC ³³ נֶֽגַע־ וְקָל֥וֹן יִמְצָ֑א וְ֝חֶרְפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א תִמָּחֶֽה׃

BAN ³⁴ Car la jalousie rend un mari furieux ;
Il sera sans pitié au jour de la vengeance

KJV ³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

WLC ³⁴ כִּֽי־ קִנְאָ֥ה חֲמַת־ גָּ֑בֶר וְלֹֽא־ יַ֝חְמ֗וֹל בְּי֣וֹם נָקָֽם׃

BAN ³⁵ Il n'aura égard à aucune rançon,
Il ne consentira à rien, quand tu multiplierais les présents.

KJV ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

WLC ³⁵ לֹא־ יִ֭שָּׂא פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ כֹּ֑פֶר וְלֹֽא־ יֹ֝אבֶ֗ה כִּ֣י תַרְבֶּה־ שֹֽׁחַד׃
